Abstract
We demonstrate the existence of breathing dissipative light bullets in a birefringent optical resonator filled with Kerr media. The propagation of light inside the cavity for each polarized component, which is coupled by cross-phase modulation, is described by the coupled Lugiato-Lefever equations. The space-time dynamics of breathing light bullets are described using Stokes parameters and frequency spectra.

Abstract
In recent decades, the possibility that use of mobile communicating devices, particularly wireless (mobile and cordless) phones, may increase brain tumour risk, has been a concern, particularly given the considerable increase in their use by young people. MOBI-Kids, a 14-country (Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain) case-control study, was conducted to evaluate whether wireless phone use (and particularly resulting exposure to radiofrequency (RF) and extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMF)) increases risk of brain tumours in young people. Between 2010 and 2015, the study recruited 899 people with brain tumours aged 10 to 24 years old and 1,910 controls (operated for appendicitis) matched to the cases on date of diagnosis, study region and age. Participation rates were 72% for cases and 54% for controls. The mean ages of cases and controls were 16.5 and 16.6 years, respectively; 57% were males. The vast majority of study participants were wireless phones users, even in the youngest age group, and the study included substantial numbers of long-term (over 10 years) users: 22% overall, 51% in the 20-24-year-olds. Most tumours were of the neuroepithelial type (NBT; n = 671), mainly glioma. The odds ratios (OR) of NBT appeared to decrease with increasing time since start of use of wireless phones, cumulative number of calls and cumulative call time, particularly in the 15-19 years old age group. A decreasing trend in ORs was also observed with increasing estimated cumulative RF specific energy and ELF induced current density at the location of the tumour. Further analyses suggest that the large number of ORs below 1 in this study is unlikely to represent an unknown causal preventive effect of mobile phone exposure: they can be at least partially explained by differential recall by proxies and prodromal symptoms affecting phone use before diagnosis of the cases. We cannot rule out, however, residual confounding from sources we did not measure. Overall, our study provides no evidence of a causal association between wireless phone use and brain tumours in young people. However, the sources of bias summarised above prevent us from ruling out a small increased risk.

Abstract
We report the existence of stable dissipative light bullets in Kerr cavities. These three-dimensional (3D) localized structures consist of either an isolated light bullet (LB), bound together, or could occur in clusters forming well-defined 3D patterns. They can be seen as stationary states in the reference frame moving with the group velocity of light within the cavity. The number of LBs and their distribution in 3D settings are determined by the initial conditions, while their maximum peak power remains constant for a fixed value of the system parameters. Their bifurcation diagram allows us to explain this phenomenon as a manifestation of homoclinic snaking for dissipative light bullets. However, when the strength of the injected beam is increased, LBs lose their stability and the cavity field exhibits giant, short-living 3D pulses. The statistical characterization of pulse amplitude reveals a long tail probability distribution, indicating the occurrence of extreme events, often called rogue waves.

Abstract
Trinucleotide repeat (TNR) sequences introduce sequence-directed flexibility in the genomic makeup of all living species leading to unique non-canonical structure formation. In humans, the expansions of TNR sequences are responsible for almost 24 neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases because their unique structures disrupt cell functions. The biophysical studies of these sequences affect their electrophoretic mobility and spectroscopic signatures. Here, we demonstrate a novel strategy to characterize and discriminate the TNR sequences by monitoring their capillary flow in the absence of an external driving force using wax-on-plastic microchannels. The wax-on-plastic microfluidic system translates the sequence-directed flexibility of TNR into differential flow dynamics. Several variables were used to characterize sequences including concentration, single- vs. double-stranded samples, type of repeat sequence, length of the repeat sequence, presence of mismatches in duplex, and presence of metal ion. All these variables were found to influence the flow velocities of TNR sequences as these factors directly affect the structural flexibility of TNR at the molecular level. An overall trend was observed as the higher flexibility in the TNR structure leads to lower capillary flow. After testing samples derived from relevant cells harboring expanded TNR sequences, it is concluded that this approach may transform into a reagent-free and pump-free biosensing platform to detect microsatellite expansion diseases.

Abstract
Introduction
Late catch-up phenomenon (LCU) of 1st generation drug eluting stent (DES) has been increasing yearly despite the rate of restenosis in 1 year has reduced compared with bare metal stent (BMS). 2nd generation DES was more improved than 1st generation DES and suggested more benefits about clinical outcome.
Purpose
To investigate the incidence and predictor of LCU after implantation of 2nd generation DES and to evaluate the association between LCU phenomenon and adverse events.
Methods
Between August 2012 and July 2013, a total of 1665 consecutive patients (1956 lesions with elective/urgent PCI) were enrolled in SHINANO 5 years Registry (a prospective observational multicenter cohort study) from 13 institutions in Nagano, Japan. 711 patients that were treated with 2nd generation DES and 576 patients with BMS were selected. Exclusion criterias were cases of 1st DES, only POBA, only aspiration and chronic total occulusion.
Results
There were significant difference about patients background between BMS and 2nd generation DES groups. Those groups were matched with propensity score. After matching, 822 patients (BMS group 411 patients, 2nd generation group 411 patients) were analyzed. The rates of 2nd DES and BMS restenosis 5 years after initial PCI were 9.2% and 8.5% (p=0.572), those of LCU were 2.6% and 5.6% (p=0.043) by 1 year landmark analysis. Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that the DES in-stent restenosis (ISR) lesion and higher HbA1c were independent predictors for LCU from 1year to 5year (HR 5.304, p=0.009, HR 1.254, p=0.015), but 2nd generation DES was not. Kaplan Meier curve showed no association between LCU phenomenon and all cause death (p=0.446). Cox regression analysis showed LCU was not independent predictor for all cause death (p=0.414).
Conclusions
Implantation to DES-ISR lesion with 2nd generation DES was associated with higher LCU. Despite of more complex lesions with 2nd generation DES, there were no differences of LCU incidence between 2nd generation DES and BMS.

Abstract
DNA repeat expansion sequences cause a myriad of neurological diseases when they expand beyond a critical threshold. Previous electrochemical approaches focused on the detection of trinucleotide repeats (CAG, CGG, and GAA) and relied on labeling of the probe and/or target strands or enzyme-linked assays. However, detection of expanded GC-rich sequences is challenging because they are prone to forming secondary structures such as cruciforms and quadruplexes. Here, we present label-free detection of hexanucleotide GGGGCC repeat sequences, which cause the leading genetic form of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The approach relies on capturing targets by surface-bound oligonucleotide probes with a different number of complementary repeats, which proportionately translates the length of the target strands into charge transfer resistance (RCT) signal measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The probe carrying three tandem repeats transduces the number of repeats into RCT with a 3× higher calibration sensitivity and detection limit. Chronocoulometric measurements show a decrease in surface density with increasing repeat length, which is opposite of the impedance trend. This implies that the length of the target itself can contribute to amplification of the impedance signal independent of the surface density. Moreover, the probe can distinguish between a control and patient sequences while remaining insensitive to non-specific Huntington's disease (CAG) repeats in the presence of a complementary target. This label-free strategy might be applied to detect the length of other neurodegenerative repeat sequences using short probes with a few complementary repeats. Abstract
Fabrication of inexpensive and flexible electronic and electrochemical sensors is in high demand for a wide range of biochemical and biomedical applications. We explore hand fabrication of CNT modified AgNPs electrodes using wax-on-plastic platforms and their application in electrochemical immunosensing. Wax patterns were printed on polyethylene terephthalate-based substrates to laydown templates for the electrodes. Hand painting was employed to fabricate a silver conductive layer using AgNPs ink applied in the hydrophilic regions of the substrate surrounded by wax. CNT was drop cast on top of the working electrodes to improve their electrochemical signal. The device layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance of the hand fabricated AgNPs and CNT/AgNPs electrodes was tested using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and amperometry. The electrochemical response of CNT/AgNPs electrodes was relatively faster, higher, and more selective than unmodified AgNPs sensing electrodes. Finally, the hand-painted CNT/AgNPs electrodes were applied to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by measuring the end-product of immunoassay performed on magnetic particles. The detection limit for CEA was found to be 0.46 ng/mL.

Abstract
Complex spatiotemporal dynamics have been a subject of recent experimental investigations in optical frequency comb microresonators and in driven fiber cavities with Kerr-type media. We show that this complex behavior has a spatiotemporal chaotic nature. We determine numerically the Lyapunov spectra, allowing us to characterize different dynamical behavior occurring in these simple devices. The Yorke-Kaplan dimension is used as an order parameter to characterize the bifurcation diagram. We identify a wide regime of parameters where the system exhibits a coexistence between the spatiotemporal chaos, the oscillatory localized structure, and the homogeneous steady state. The destabilization of an oscillatory localized state through radiation of counter-propagating fronts between the homogeneous and the spatiotemporal chaotic states is analyzed. To characterize better the spatiotemporal chaos, we estimate the front speed as a function of the pump intensity.

Abstract
We investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics of a ring cavity filled with a non-instantaneous Kerr medium and driven by a coherent injected beam. We show the existence of a stable mixed-mode solution that can be either extended or localized in space. The mixed-mode solutions are obtained in a regime where Turing instability (often called modulational instability) interacts with self-pulsing phenomenon (Andronov-Hopf bifurcation). We numerically describe the transition from stationary inhomogeneous solutions to a branch of mixed-mode solutions. We characterize this transition by constructing the bifurcation diagram associated with these solutions. Finally, we show stable localized mixed-mode solutions, which consist of time-periodic oscillations that are localized in space.

Abstract
We consider a bistable system consisting of all fiber cavity driven by an external injected continuous wave. We report on front propagation in a high finesse cavity. We study the asymptotic behavior of the front velocity. We show that the front velocity is affected by the distance from the critical point associated with bistability. We provide a scaling low governing its evolution near the up-switching point of the bistable curve. We show also that the velocity of front propagation obeys a generic power law when the front velocity approaches asymptotically its linear growing value.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate the use of cyclic pulse coding for distributed strain and temperature measurements in hybrid Raman/Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) optical fiber sensors. The highly integrated proposed solution effectively addresses the strain/temperature cross-sensitivity issue affecting standard BOTDA sensors, allowing for simultaneous meter-scale strain and temperature measurements over 10 km of standard single mode fiber using a single narrowband laser source only.

Abstract
A cyclic pulse coding technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for fast implementation of long-range Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). The proposed technique allows for accurate temperature and strain measurements with meter-scale spatial resolution over kilometers of standard single-mode fiber, with subsecond measurement times.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure intraoral pressure and perioral movement in infants during breastfeeding (BF) and feeding with experimental teat (ET). The teat has a wide base, firm shaft and a valve at the base, such that milk flows only when the baby provides a hold pressure. STUDY DESIGN Twenty healthy term infants, between 1 and 8 months old, were enrolled in the study. Feeding sessions (BF and ET) were recorded using a digital video camera. During both BF and ET feeding sessions, recordings during feeding were taken of jaw and throat movements (n=20) as well as intraoral pressure (n=18). The efficiency of milk transfer and the angle of the mouth were also measured. RESULT There was no significant difference in either the jaw or throat movements between BF and ET. The sucking burst pattern, the efficiency (ml min(-1)), and the angle of the mouth did not differ between both feeding methods. The intraoral negative pressure observed during ET was significantly smaller than that observed during BF. CONCLUSION There were no significant differences in perioral movements. Although the value was smaller, a hold pressure was observed during ET. From these results, the novel, ET may decrease BF problems related to bottle use.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the use of cyclic pulse coding to improve the performance of hybrid Raman/fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fiber-optic sensors, for simultaneous measurement of distributed static temperature and discrete dynamic strain over the same sensing fiber. Effective noise reduction is achieved in both Raman optical time-domain reflectometry and dynamic interrogation of time-division-multiplexed fiber FBG sensors, enhancing the sensing range resolution and providing real-time point dynamic strain measurement capabilities. The highly integrated sensor scheme employs broadband apodized low-reflectivity FBGs, a single narrowband optical source, and a shared receiver block.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colonic spasm is an important problem in colonoscopy for endoscopists to advance the colonoscope and visualize the mucosa. STUDY AIMS In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules (Colpermin) as an orally administered antispasmodic premedication in colonoscopy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sixty-five adult patients undergoing colonoscopy were randomized to receive either Colpermin (n = 33) or placebo capsules (n = 32) as premedication, 4 hours before the procedure. An experienced endoscopist performed colonoscopy. Outcome measures included cecal intubation and total procedure time, spasm score, pain score, endoscopist satisfaction and patients' willingness to repeat colonoscopy. RESULTS Duration of both total procedure time and cecal intubation time in patients in the Colpermin group were shorter than that in ones in the placebo group. Scores for colonic spasm and pain were significantly lower in the Colpermin group. The endoscopist satisfaction score was higher in the Colpermin group and patients in the Colpermin group were more willing to repeat colonoscopy in the future. CONCLUSIONS Premedication with Colpermin was beneficial in terms of the time required for cecal intubation and total procedure time, reducing colonic spasm, increasing endoscopist satisfaction and decreasing pain in patients during colonoscopy.

Modulation instability in a passive fiber cavity is revisited. We address the problem in the statement with a continuous-time Ikeda map, rather than in the mean-field limit. It is found that plane wave solutions are unstable for both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes of an optical fiber. The origin of the instability in the continuous-time Ikeda map is in the mode mixing introduced by the beam splitter. The obtained conditions for the instability were compared with ones known for the discrete-time Ikeda map, showing appreciable difference, which, however reduces in the mean-field limit.

Abstract
We demonstrate the cnoidal wave formation in a two-laser system with a saturable absorber in the cavity of one of the lasers. Another laser is used to activate the saturable absorber in order to control the pulse shape, width, intensity and frequency. Using the three-level laser model based on the Statz--De Mars equations, we show that for any value of the saturable absorber parameter there exists a certain modulation frequency for which the pulse shape is very close to a soliton shape with less than 5% error at the pulse base. Such a device may be prominent for optical communication and laser engineering applications.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this study was to develop an estimate of a radio frequency (RF) dose as the amount of mobile phone RF energy absorbed at the location of a brain tumour, for use in the Interphone Epidemiological Study. Methods We systematically evaluated and quantified all the main parameters thought to influence the amount of specific RF energy absorbed in the brain from mobile telephone use. For this, we identified the likely important determinants of RF specific energy absorption rate during protocol and questionnaire design, we collected information from study subjects, network operators and laboratories involved in specific energy absorption rate measurements and we studied potential modifiers of phone output through the use of software-modified phones. Data collected were analysed to assess the relative importance of the different factors, leading to the development of an algorithm to evaluate the total cumulative specific RF energy (in joules per kilogram), or dose, absorbed at a particular location in the brain. This algorithm was applied to Interphone Study subjects in five countries. Results The main determinants of total cumulative specific RF energy from mobile phones were communication system and frequency band, location in the brain and amount and duration of mobile phone use. Though there was substantial agreement between categorisation of subjects by cumulative specific RF energy and cumulative call time, misclassification was non-negligible, particularly at higher frequency bands. Factors such as adaptive power control (except in Code Division Multiple Access networks), discontinuous transmission and conditions of phone use were found to have a relatively minor influence on total cumulative specific RF energy. Conclusions While amount and duration of use are important determinants of RF dose in the brain, their impact can be substantially modified by communication system, frequency band and location in the brain. It is important to take these into account in analyses of risk of brain tumours from RF exposure from mobile phones.

Abstract
We demonstrate in an optical fiber that third-order dispersion yields an unexpected symmetry-breaking dynamics of the modulational instability spectrum. It is found in particular that this spectral asymmetry does not smoothly and monotonically increase when approaching the zero-dispersion wavelength. Instead, it exhibits several local extrema and it can even be reversed at a particular dispersion value. We interpret this behavior as resulting from interactions between dispersive waves and solitons generated from modulation instability.

Abstract
We investigated the mechanisms responsible for factor VII (FVII) deficiency in a compound heterozygous Japanese patient with mutations both in the signal peptide and in the catalytic domain. FVII activity (FVII:C) and antigen (FVII:Ag) levels of the patient were 14.5% and 12.5% of those of the normal controls, respectively. In all, 2 heterozygous point mutations were identified in the patient: one was the mutation substituting Pro for Leu-48 in the prepeptide domain of FVII; the other one was a novel mutation substituting Leu for Pro260 in the catalytic domain. FVII activity and FVII:Ag levels in the condition medium that transiently coexpressed the 2 different FVII mutants in baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells were 4.81% and 5.18% of the wild-type FVII. Factor VII defect of the patient may be combined with both impairing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) targeting and altering FVII folding/biosynthesis, but cotransfection of 2 different FVII mutants may interfere with their expression in BHK cells.

Abstract
A method is proposed to solve the challenging problem of determining the supratransmission threshold (onset of instability of harmonic boundary driving inside a band gap) in multicomponent nonintegrable nonlinear systems. It is successfully applied to the degenerate three-wave resonant interaction in a birefringent quadratic medium where the process generates spatial gap solitons. No analytic expression is known for this model showing the broad applicability of the method to nonlinear systems.

Abstract
AIM To obtain a better understanding of the changes in feeding behaviour from 1 to 6 months of age. By comparing breast- and bottle-feeding, we intended to clarify the difference in longitudinal sucking performance. METHODS Sucking variables were consecutively measured for 16 breast-fed and eight bottle-fed infants at 1, 3 and 6 months of age. RESULTS For breast-feeding, number of sucks per burst (17.8 +/- 8.8, 23.8 +/- 8.3 and 32.4 +/- 15.3 times), sucking burst duration (11.2 +/- 6.1, 14.7 +/- 8.0 and 17.9 +/- 8.8 sec) and number of sucking bursts per feed (33.9 +/- 13.9, 28.0 +/- 18.2 and 18.6 +/- 12.8 times) at 1, 3 and 6 months of age respectively showed significant differences between 1 and 6 months of age (p < 0.05). The sucking pressure and total number of sucks per feed did not differ among different ages. Bottle-feeding resulted in longer sucking bursts and more sucks per burst compared with breast-feeding in each month (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The increase in the amount of ingested milk with maturation resulted from an increase in bolus volume per minute as well as the higher number of sucks continuously for both breast- and bottle-fed infants.

Abstract
We show that nonlinear optical cavities under periodic modulations can exhibit dissipative Bloch waves. This can be achieved by a proper choice of the incident field in the cavity that must both compensate for losses and match with the modulation period. Dissipative Bloch waves, unlike their conservative counterparts, spontaneously emerge in the cavity and hence correspond to attracting solutions. This makes it possible to experimentally visualize the band structure of the cavity medium. As an illustration of this phenomenon, we performed our analytical investigations on a degenerate optical parametric oscillator with a modulated transverse refractive index.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The output power of a mobile phone is directly related to its radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic field strength, and may theoretically vary substantially in different networks and phone use circumstances due to power control technologies. To improve indices of RF exposure for epidemiological studies, we assessed determinants of mobile phone output power in a multinational study. METHODS More than 500 volunteers in 12 countries used Global System for Mobile communications software-modified phones (GSM SMPs) for approximately 1 month each. The SMPs recorded date, time, and duration of each call, and the frequency band and output power at fixed sampling intervals throughout each call. Questionnaires provided information on the typical circumstances of an individual's phone use. Linear regression models were used to analyse the influence of possible explanatory variables on the average output power and the percentage call time at maximum power for each call. RESULTS Measurements of over 60,000 phone calls showed that the average output power was approximately 50% of the maximum, and that output power varied by a factor of up to 2 to 3 between study centres and network operators. Maximum power was used during a considerable proportion of call time (39% on average). Output power decreased with increasing call duration, but showed little variation in relation to reported frequency of use while in a moving vehicle or inside buildings. Higher output powers for rural compared with urban use of the SMP were observed principally in Sweden where the study covered very sparsely populated areas. CONCLUSIONS Average power levels are substantially higher than the minimum levels theoretically achievable in GSM networks. Exposure indices could be improved by accounting for average power levels of different telecommunications systems. There appears to be little value in gathering information on circumstances of phone use other than use in very sparsely populated regions.

Abstract
We study experimentally and numerically the temporal features of supercontinuum generated with a continuous-wave ytterbium-doped fiber laser. We show that the temporal output of the supercontinuum is characterized by strong and brief power fluctuations, i.e. so-called optical rogue waves. We demonstrate numerically that these rare and strong events that appear and disappear from nowhere result from solitonic collisions.

Abstract
We analyze the beating between intrinsic frequencies that are simultaneously generated by a modulation (Turing) instability in a nonlinear extended system. The model studied is that of a coherently driven photonic crystal fiber cavity. Beating in the form of a slow modulation of fast intensity oscillations is found to be stable for a wide range of parameters. We find that such beating can also be localized and contain only a finite number of slow modulations. These structures consist of dips in the amplitude of the fast intensity oscillations, which can either be isolated or regularly spaced. An asymptotic analysis close to the modulation instability threshold allows us to explain this phenomenon as a manifestation of homoclinic snaking for dissipative localized structures.

Abstract
Th1 and Th2 cytokines such as interferon-γ (IFN-γ ) , tumor necrosis factor- α (TNF-α ), and IL-4 are expressed in T-cell-mediated inflammation in the oral cavity. We tested the hypothesis that those cytokines may act on CXCR3-agonistic chemokines, T-cell recruiting factors, and on neighboring cells, including oral keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Human immortalized oral keratinocytes (RT7) and fibroblasts (GT1) after 24-hour stimulation with IFN-γ showed increased mRNA levels of CXCL9 (600- and 700-fold), CXCL10 (10,000- and 150-fold), and CXCL11 (5000- and 300-fold), respectively. In contrast, TNF-α caused an increase in CXCL9 (300-fold), CXCL10 (2000-fold), and CXCL11 (2000-fold) mRNA levels in GT1, but not RT7 cells, at 24 hrs. IL-4 reinforced the promotion of CXCL9, CXCL10, and CXCL11 expression by IFN-γ in RT7 cells, whereas IL-4 inhibited the increased levels by IFN-γ and TNF-α in GT1 cells. Thus, IFN-γ , TNF-α , and IL-4 appear cooperatively to regulate CXCR3-agonistic chemokines in oral keratinocytes and fibroblasts in T-cell-mediated oral inflammation sites.

Abstract
In the fiber fuse, a pulse of high temperature travels toward the input end of the fiber, where high-power laser light is launched into the fiber. At any point along the fiber, the soliton can be ignited. The fiber core is damaged in the process so that light cannot propagate beyond the hot spot. This phenomenon is an example of a dissipative soliton that can exist only in the presence of an external energy supply and internal loss. We analyze this phenomenon, derive an expression for the velocity of the soliton, and determine its width as functions of the physical parameters of the laser and the fiber material.

Abstract
We theoretically and experimentally evidence that fiber systems are convective systems since their nonlocal inherent properties, such as the dispersion and Raman effects, break the reflection symmetry. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations carried out for a fiber ring cavity demonstrate that the third-order dispersion term leads to the appearance of convective and absolute instabilities. Their signature is an asymmetry in the output power spectrum. Using this criterion, experimental evidence of convective instabilities is given in a fiber cavity pumped by a pulsed laser.

Abstract
The rapid worldwide increase in mobile phone use in the last decade has generated considerable interest in possible carcinogenic effects of radio frequency (RF). Because exposure to RF from phones is localized, if a risk exists it is likely to be greatest for tumours in regions with greatest energy absorption. The objective of the current paper was to characterize the spatial distribution of RF energy in the brain, using results of measurements made in two laboratories on 110 phones used in Europe or Japan. Most (97-99% depending on frequency) appears to be absorbed in the brain hemisphere on the side where the phone is used, mainly (50-60%) in the temporal lobe. The average relative SAR is highest in the temporal lobe (6-15%, depending on frequency, of the spatial peak SAR in the most exposed region of the brain) and the cerebellum (2-10%) and decreases very rapidly with increasing depth, particularly at higher frequencies. The SAR distribution appears to be fairly similar across phone models, between older and newer phones and between phones with different antenna types and positions. Analyses of risk by location of tumour are therefore important for the interpretation of results of studies of brain tumours in relation to mobile phone use.

Abstract
In a case–control study in Japan of brain tumours in relation to mobile phone use, we used a novel approach for estimating the specific absorption rate (SAR) inside the tumour, taking account of spatial relationships between tumour localisation and intracranial radiofrequency distribution. Personal interviews were carried out with 88 patients with glioma, 132 with meningioma, and 102 with pituitary adenoma (322 cases in total), and with 683 individually matched controls. All maximal SAR values were below 0.1 W kg−1, far lower than the level at which thermal effects may occur, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for regular mobile phone users being 1.22 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63–2.37) for glioma and 0.70 (0.42–1.16) for meningioma. When the maximal SAR value inside the tumour tissue was accounted for in the exposure indices, the overall OR was again not increased and there was no significant trend towards an increasing OR in relation to SAR-derived exposure indices. A non-significant increase in OR among glioma patients in the heavily exposed group may reflect recall bias.

Spatially localized and periodic field patterns in periodically modulated optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators are studied. In the degenerate case (equal signal and idler beams) we elaborate on the systematic method of construction of the stationary localized modes in the amplifiers, and study their properties and stability. We describe a method of constructing periodic solutions in optical parametric oscillators, by adjusting the form of the external driven field to the given form of either signal or pump beams.

Taking up to fourth-order dispersion effects into account, we show that fiber resonators become stable for a large intensity regime. The range of pump intensities leading to modulational instability becomes finite and controllable. Moreover, by computing analytically the thresholds and frequencies of these instabilities, we demonstrate the existence of a new unstable frequency at the primary threshold. This frequency exists for an arbitrary small but nonzero fourth-order dispersion coefficient. Numerical simulations for a low and flattened dispersion photonic crystal fiber resonator confirm analytical predictions and open the way to experimental implementation.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated whether exposure to 2450 MHz high-frequency electromagnetic fields (HFEMFs) could act as an environmental insult to evoke a stress response in A172 cells, using HSP70 and HSP27 as stress markers. The cells were exposed to a 2450 MHz HFEMF with a wide range of specific absorption rates (SARs: 5-200 W/kg) or sham conditions. Because exposure to 2450 MHz HFEMF at 50-200 W/kg SAR causes temperature increases in culture medium, appropriate heat control groups (38-44 degrees C) were also included. The expression of HSP 70 and HSP 27, as well as the level of phosphorylated HSP 27 ((78)Ser) (p-HSP27), was determined by Western blotting. Our results showed that the expression of HSP 70 increased in a time and dose-dependent manner at >50 W/kg SAR for 1-3 h. A similar effect was also observed in corresponding heat controls. There was no significant change in HSP 27 expression caused by HFEMF at 5-200 W/kg or by comparable heating for 1-3 h. However, HSP 27 phosphorylation increased transiently at 100 and 200 W/kg to a greater extent than at 40-44 degrees C. Phosphorylation of HSP 27 reached a maximum after 1 h exposure at 100 W/kg HFEMF. Our results suggest that exposure to a 2450 MHz HFEMF has little or no apparent effect on HSP70 and HSP27 expression, but it may induce a transient increase in HSP27 Phosphorylation in A172 cells at very high SAR (>100 W/kg).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The rapid increase of mobile phone use has increased public concern about its possible health effects in Japan, where the mobile phone system is unique in the characteristics of its signal transmission. To examine the relation between mobile phone use and acoustic neuroma, a case-control study was initiated. METHODS The study followed the common, core protocol of the international collaborative study, INTERPHONE. A prospective case recruitment was done in Japan for 2000-04. One hundred and one acoustic neuroma cases, who were 30-69 years of age and resided in the Tokyo area, and 339 age, sex, and residency matched controls were interviewed using a common computer assisted personal interview system. Education and marital status adjusted odds ratio was calculated with a conditional logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Fifty one cases (52.6%) and 192 controls (58.2%) were regular mobile phone users on the reference date, which was set as one year before the diagnosis, and no significant increase of acoustic neuroma risk was observed, with the odds ratio (OR) being 0.73 (95% CI 0.43 to 1.23). No exposure related increase in the risk of acoustic neuroma was observed when the cumulative length of use (<4 years, 4-8 years, >8 years) or cumulative call time (<300 hours, 300-900 hours, >900 hours) was used as an exposure index. The OR was 1.09 (95% CI 0.58 to 2.06) when the reference date was set as five years before the diagnosis. Further, laterality of mobile phone use was not associated with tumours. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that there is no significant increase in the risk of acoustic neuroma in association with mobile phone use in Japan.

Biotinylation of a protein generally involves chemical modification of a translated protein. Using this methodology, however, biotinylation at a specific position remains difficult. We investigated whether it would be possible to use an Escherichia coli initiator tRNA(fmet) aminoacylated with methionine biotinylated at the alpha-amino group to introduce a biotin tag specifically at the N terminus. We report here that a biotin tag could be incorporated into the green fluorescent protein (GFP) at the N-terminal site, in the presence of an E. coli initiator tRNA(fmet) aminoacylated with methionine biotinylated at the alpha-amino group. The biotinylated GFP was purified by simple monomeric streptavidin-agarose affinity column chromatography. Based on the total amount of GFP molecules, the purification yield and the biotin labelling efficiency of this system were approximately 7% and 10-20%, respectively, according to the densitometric analysis of Western blots. Judging from the results of a fluorescence imaging experiment, almost all the purified GFP molecules retained the native fluorescence activity. Importantly, the present results support the hypothesis that the E. coli initiator tRNA(fmet) aminoacylated with a relatively large substituent can be recognized by an E. coli ribosome and adequately placed at the P site to initiate translation.

Abstract
There has been considerable discussion about the influence of high-frequency electromagnetic fields (HFEMF) on the human body. In particular, HFEMF used for mobile phones may be of great concern for human health. In order to investigate the properties of HFEMF, we have examined the effects of 2.45-GHz EMF on micronucleus (MN) formation in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells. MN formation is induced by chromosomal breakage or inhibition of spindles during cell division and leads to cell damage. We also examined the influence of heat on MN formation, since HFEMF exposure causes a rise in temperature. CHO-K1 cells were exposed to HFEMF for 2 h at average specific absorption rates (SARs) of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 W/kg, and the effects on these cells were compared with those in sham-exposed control cells. The cells were also treated with bleomycin alone as a positive control or with combined treatment of HFEMF exposure and bleomycin. Heat treatment was performed at temperatures of 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42°C.The MN frequency in cells exposed to HFEMF at a SAR of lower than 50 W/kg did not differ from the sham-exposed controls, while those at SARs of 100 and 200 W/kg were significantly higher when compared with the sham-exposed controls. There was no apparent combined effect of HFEMF exposure and bleomycin treatment. On heat treatment at temperatures from 38–42°C, the MN frequency increased in a temperature-dependent manner. We also showed that an increase in SAR causes a rise in temperature and this may be connected to the increase in MN formation generated by exposure to HFEMF.

Abstract
The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii was investigated in wild and captive cetaceans from Japan. Antibodies against T. gondii were examined by both latex agglutination test (LAT) and indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT) for 77 serum or plasma samples obtained from 59 individuals of 6 species, including 2 hybrids. Antibody titers greater than 1:64 in LAT and greater than 1:640 in IHAT, indicative of the presence of T. gondii, were found in 11.9% of 59 individuals. In 7 samples that showed a positive reaction by IHAT, T. gondii titers were examined for each immunoglobulin (Ig) fraction separated by sucrose gradient centrifugation. The antibody peaks in each fraction were divided into 3 types, thought to be a reaction of IgM (type 1), IgG (type 2), and IgM with IgG (type 3). Type 1 was found in serum from a bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and a killer whale (Orcinus orca) sampled soon after capture off the Japanese coast in 1988; it was concluded that infection in the wild had occurred less than 15 yr before the study was performed. The prevalence of putative IgM and IgG antibodies from a captive-bred T. truncatus suggested that T. gondii infection also occurred in the aquarium.

Abstract
Recently, we succeeded in incorporating a biotin tag into an active protein, but only at the N-terminal site, in the presence of an Escherichia coli initiator tRNA(fMet) aminoacylated with methionine biotinylated at the alpha-amino group. The biotinylated protein was immobilized on a streptavidin-matrix. We have tried to increase the biotin labeling efficiency (immobilization efficiency) by decreasing concentrations of non-biotinylated tRNA(fMet)s in the translation system.

Abstract
Site-specific incorporation of the tyrosine isostere (2-Hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-propionic acid) into streptavidin was accomplished by in vitro frameshift suppression of a CGGG 4-base mutation with a chemically acylated frameshift suppressor tRNA(cccg). The mutant, in which the backbone amide linkage is replaced by an ester linkage, is hydrolyzed under neutral condition. The cleavage rate of the protein backbone at a single-predetermined site was strongly depended on the incorporated position of the isostere.

Abstract
We analyzed telomerase activities and gene expressions of telomerase components: hTERT, hTR, hTEP1, telomeric repeat binding factors: TRF1, TRF2, and c-myc, Max and Mad in human normal oral and ectocervical epithelial keratinocytes, comparing with those of squamous carcinoma cells and HPV16- or SV40-immortalized cells. Significant telomerase activity and hTERT expression were detected in primary keratinocytes. However, both were dramatically down-regulated during serial passages. The down-regulation of hTERT mRNA was associated with augmented expression of TRF1. Expression of c-myc was slightly decreased, whereas Mad was expressed in parallel with that of hTERT during passages. We also detected an alternate splicing of hTERT transcript in two of four cancer cells and normal aged epithelial cells. These results suggest that the senescence of normal oral and ectocervical keratinocytes is accompanied with up-regulation of TRF1 and down-regulation of telomerase activity due to transcriptional suppression of active form of hTERT in vitro.
