Comparative Evaluation of the Border Morphology Produced by Three Different Border Molding Materials: An In-vivo Study

Introduction: Different materials and technique exist to record the functional and physiologic border of the denture. There is a need to determine which among the various materials available would accurately record the borders width and height as compared to tissue conditioner. Aim: To compare and evaluate the morphology of the denture borders produced by three different commercially available border molding materials. Materials and Methods: This in-vivo study was conducted at KAHER’s KLE VK Institute of Dental Science, Belagavi, Karnataka, India, from November 2012 to June 2013. The study included 20 patients with previous dentures. The labial flange of 20 patients with the existing maxillary denture was trimmed 2 mm short of the sulcus and border molding was done with tissue conditioner. The patients were instructed to perform routine activity with the denture and asked to report after 1 day. Three custom trays were fabricated without spacer, 2 mm short of the labial border. Border molding was carried out with low fusing compound, putty addition silicone and pattern resin. The trays were beaded at 2 mm from the depth of the vestibule and were poured with die stone. Casts were obtained and with the standardised method, the cast were sectioned into six sections. Border morphology of the sulcus was viewed under stereomicroscope and under image analyser. The statistical analysis carried out was using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 19.0 Inc. Chicago, IL, USA. The level of significance was 95% confidence with p-value <0.05 was considered. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test and Bonferroni multiple posts-hoc test was used to analyse the data. Results: The descriptive analysis showed that the mean area of tissue conditioner (111590.95 µm2 ) was least, next being pattern resin (131253.30 µm2 ) followed by Low fusing impression compound (154854.20 µm2 ) and addition silicone (190968.55 µm2 ) (p-value<0.001). Conclusion: The result of the study showed that tissue conditioner was the best material that could be used for border molding followed by pattern resin and low fusing compound.

Rehabilitation of Mandibular Partial Edentulous Arch Using Ceka Revax Semi-precision Attachment: A Case Report

There are many prosthetic treatments modalities in rehabilitating partially edentulous condition. It is a technically difficult task for any prosthodontist to treat partially edentulous condition because retention and stability are the two main problems. Attachments are available with small interlocking devices which connects prosthesis and abutments which improves retention and stability and esthetics. Ceka attachment can be used to obtain retention and stability for the prosthesis. A 48-year-old-female patient reported to the Department of Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge with chief complaint of missing teeth with respect to teeth number- 12,13,14, 22,25,26,35,36,37,45,46,47. This case describes rehabilitating maxillary missing teeth and posterior edentulous mandibular arch using semi precision attachment (Ceka Revax Extracoronal Green). Precision attachments have two metal components which form an articulate joint with first component or matrix or keyway which is attached to clinical contours of a cast restoration and the second component of patrix is attached to the removable partial denture.This case required multidisciplinary approach, technical skills and treatment offered showed excellent patient acceptance and also met aesthetic demands too.

Coculture method for in vitro cultivation of uncultured oral bacteria

PURPOSE

The purpose of the study is to culture uncultured oral bacteria with helper strains using the coculture method from the subgingival plaque samples of chronic periodontitis patients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The samples were processed and inoculated on a blood agar medium enriched with hemin and Vitamin K. A helper strain Propionibacterium acnes (ATCC 6919) was cross-streaked across the inoculums to facilitate coculture. The plates were then incubated for 7 days with subsequent subculturing and further incubation.

RESULTS

Satellite colonies around helper strain showed one colony type of Porphyromonas gingivalis, one was of nonpigmented Prevotella, three were of Fusobacterium nucleatum and five isolates remained unidentified.

CONCLUSIONS

Coculture could be used effectively as one of the methods in the isolation and in vitro cultivation of oral bacteria. Incubation using the anaerobic jar technique was found to be economical and efficient for the growth of anaerobic oral bacteria.

An innovative technique for the fabrication of fixed removable guide flange prosthesis for lateral mandibular resection

Rehabilitation of patients with a severe mandibular defect is challenging to prosthodontists. The esthetic and functional rehabilitation of patients with lateral mandibular resection is difficult due to the lack of supporting tissues for the prosthesis. The mandibular deviation furthermore results in facial asymmetry and unstable occlusion. This case report describes an innovative technique to rehabilitate a patient with lateral mandibular resection using customized access post attachment system to retain guide flange prosthesis for reducing mandibular deviation.

Surface Detail Reproduction and Dimensional Stability of Contemporary Irreversible Hydrocolloid Alternatives after Immediate and Delayed Pouring

Purpose

To overcome the poor dimensional stability of irreversible hydrocolloids, alternative materials were introduced. The dimensional changes of these alternatives after delayed pouring are not well studied and documented in the literature. The purpose of the study is to evaluate and compare the surface detail reproduction and dimensional stability of two irreversible hydrocolloid alternatives with an extended-pour irreversible hydrocolloid at different time intervals.

Materials and Methods

All testing were performed according to the ANSI/ADA specification number 18 for surface detail reproduction and specification number 19 for dimensional change. The test materials used in this study were newer irreversible hydrocolloid alternatives such as AlgiNot FS, Algin-X Ultra FS, and Kromopan 100 which is an extended pour irreversible hydrocolloid as control. The surface detail reproduction was evaluated using stereomicroscope. The dimensional change after storage period of 1 h, 24 h, and 120 h was assessed and compared between the test materials and control. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni test.

Results

Statistically significant results (P < 0.001) were seen when mean scores of the tested materials were compared with respect to reproduction of 22 μm line from the metal block. Kromopan 100 showed statistically significant differences between different time intervals (P < 0.001) and exhibited more dimensional change. Algin-X Ultra FS proved to be more accurate and dimensionally stable.

Conclusions

Newer irreversible hydrocolloid alternative impression materials were more accurate in surface detail reproduction and exhibited minimal dimensional change after storage period of 1 h, 24 h, and 120 h than extended-pour irreversible hydrocolloid impression material.

Three-dimensional facial analyses of Indian and Malaysian women

CONTEXT

Facial measurements serve as a valuable tool in the treatment planning of maxillofacial rehabilitation, orthodontic treatment, and orthognathic surgeries. The esthetic guidelines of face are still based on neoclassical canons, which were used in the ancient art. These canons are considered to be highly subjective, and there is ample evidence in the literature, which raises such questions as whether or not these canons can be applied for the modern population.

AIMS

This study was carried out to analyze the facial features of Indian and Malaysian women by using three-dimensional (3D) scanner and thus determine the prevalence of neoclassical facial esthetic canons in both the groups.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

The study was carried out on 60 women in the age range of 18-25 years, out of whom 30 were Indian and 30 Malaysian. As many as 16 facial measurements were taken by using a noncontact 3D scanner.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED

Unpaired t-test was used for comparison of facial measurements between Indian and Malaysian females. Two-tailed Fisher exact test was used to determine the prevalence of neoclassical canons.

RESULTS

Orbital Canon was prevalent in 80% of Malaysian women; the same was found only in 16% of Indian women (P = 0.00013). About 43% of Malaysian women exhibited orbitonasal canon (P = 0.0470) whereas nasoaural canon was prevalent in 73% of Malaysian and 33% of Indian women (P = 0.0068).

CONCLUSIONS

Orbital, orbitonasal, and nasoaural canon were more prevalent in Malaysian women. Facial profile canon, nasooral, and nasofacial canons were not seen in either group. Though some canons provide guidelines in esthetic analyses of face, complete reliance on these canons is not justifiable.
