Abstract
A watt level, 10-kilohertz repetition rate chirped pulse amplification system that has an integrated simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF) processing system is demonstrated for the first time. SSTF significantly reduces nonlinear effects normally detrimental to beam control enabling the use of a low numerical aperture focus to quickly treat optically transparent materials over a large area. The integrated SSTF system has improved efficiency compared to previously reported SSTF designs, which combined with the high repetition rate of the laser, further optimizes its capability to provide rapid, large volume processing.

Abstract
Environment Canada recently developed a clean method suitable for sampling trace levels of metals in surface waters. The results of sampling for total mercury in the Laurentian Great Lakes between 2003 and 2009 give a unique basin-wide perspective of concentrations of this important contaminant and represent improved knowledge of mercury in the region. Results indicate that concentrations of total mercury in the offshore regions of the lakes were within a relatively narrow range from about 0.3 to 0.8 ng/L. The highest concentrations were observed in the western basin of Lake Erie and concentrations then declined towards the east. Compared to the offshore, higher levels were observed at some nearshore locations, particularly in lakes Erie and Ontario. The longer-term temporal record of mercury in Niagara River suspended sediments indicates an approximate 30% decrease in equivalent water concentrations since 1986.

Abstract
By focusing a high repetition rate (50 kHz), compact, femtosecond laser system with low pulse energy (25 muJ) using a tight-focusing geometry, we demonstrate fully phase matched high-order harmonic generation for the first time at very high repetition rates, resulting in EUV light with full spatial coherence. The result is a practical, single-box, coherent source useful for applications in metrology, ultrafast spectroscopy, imaging and microscopy. The soft x-ray flux can be improved further by increasing the laser pulse energy and/or repetition rate.

Abstract
Toxaphene contamination of minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) from North Atlantic waters was examined for the first time. Total toxaphene and SigmaCHB (sum of 11 chlorobornanes) concentrations in blubber samples ranged from 170+/-110 and 41+/-39 ng/g lipid weight (l.w.) for female minke whales from southeastern Greenland to 5800+/-4100 and 1100+/-780 ng/g l.w. for males from the North Sea, respectively. Very large variations in toxaphene concentrations among sampling areas were observed suggesting a spatial segregation of minke whales. However, much of the apparent geographical discrimination was explained by the seasonal fluctuation of animal fat mass. Patterns of CHBs in males revealed that recalcitrant CHBs were in higher proportions in animals from the more easterly areas than in animals from the more westerly areas. This trend may be influenced by the predominance of the US, over the European, input of toxaphene to North Atlantic waters.

Abstract
By measuring the fringe visibility in a Young's double pinhole experiment, we demonstrate that quasi-phase-matched high-harmonic generation produces beams with very high spatial coherence at wavelengths around 13 nm. To our knowledge these are the highest spatial coherence values ever measured at such short wavelengths from any source without spatial filtering. This results in a practical, small-scale, coherent, extreme-ultraviolet source that is useful for applications in metrology, imaging, and microscopy.

Abstract
High-harmonic generation is a well-known method of producing coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) light, with photon energies up to about 0.5 keV (refs 1, 2). This is achieved by focusing a femtosecond laser into a gas, and high harmonics of the fundamental laser frequency are radiated in the forward direction. However, although this process can generate high-energy photons, efficient high-harmonic generation has been demonstrated only for photon energies of the order 50-100 eV (ref. 5). Ionization of the gas prevents the laser and the EUV light from propagating at the same speed, which severely limits the conversion efficiency. Here we report a technique to overcome this problem, and demonstrate quasi-phase-matched frequency conversion of laser light into EUV. Using a modulated hollow-core waveguide to periodically vary the intensity of the laser light driving the conversion, we efficiently generate EUV light even in the presence of substantial ionization. The use of a modulated fibre shifts the energy spectrum of the high-harmonic light to significantly higher photon energies than would otherwise be possible. We expect that this technique could form the basis of coherent EUV sources for advanced lithography and high-resolution imaging applications. In future work, it might also be possible to generate isolated attosecond pulses.

Abstract
The interference pattern produced by irradiation of a pair of pinholes with a beam contains information on both the spatial and the temporal coherence properties of the beam, as well as its power spectrum. We demonstrate experimentally for what is believed to be the first time that the spectrum of an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) beam can be obtained from a measurement of the interference pattern produced by a pinhole pair. This approach offers a convenient method of making absolute wavelength and relative spectral intensity calibrations in the EUV.

Abstract
We report the first demonstration of broadband VUV light generation through cascaded nonlinear wave mixing in a gas. Using a hollow-fiber geometry to achieve broad-bandwidth phase-matching, frequency conversion of ultrashort-pulse Ti:sapphire laser pulses from the visible into the deep UV around 200 and 160 nm is achieved. A new type of quasi-phase-matching is also observed in the VUV for the first time. Conversion using cascaded processes exhibits higher efficiencies, shorter pulse durations, and broader bandwidths than other schemes for generating light in the deep UV, and will enable many applications in science and technology.

Abstract
Historical trends in the concentrations of toxaphene, its component homologue groups, and individual chlorobornane congeners were determined in a dated sediment core from a mountain lake, Lochnagar, in Scotland, U.K., representing the first such profiles outside of North America. The profile of total toxaphene showed a bimodal distribution with maxima in the mid-1970s and early 1990s unlike the unimodal PCB profile (maximum 1973) in the same core. The earlier toxaphene peak shows agreement with the U.S. source curve and therefore may correspond to modeled global patterns while the later peak may be dueto long-rangetransportfrom eastern and southern Europe or from still lower latitudes. Sediment toxaphene concentrations (14 ng/g dry wt (dw) at surface; 40 ng/g dw at maximum) and accumulation rates (surface 0.42 ng cm(-2) yr(-1); maximum 1.6 ng cm(-2) yr(-1)) were considerably higher than levels in untreated sites in the Great Lakes region and the Canadian Arctic and are equivalent to those reported for the Great Lakes themselves where there have been additional riverine inputs. Two toxaphene congeners, B6-923 and B7-1001, accounted for most of the hexa- and heptachlorobornanes, respectively. B6-923 and B7-1001 abundance ratios (relative to the sum of 12 chlorobornane congeners) had doubling times of 17 +/- 3 and 12 +/- 3 yr, respectively. Given the remoteness of the site from areas of toxaphene production and usage, the high sediment levels raise concerns over toxaphene levels in areas of Europe closer to sources, especially where sites are fished for human consumption. Further European data are needed for comparison.

Abstract
We demonstrate a simple and practical single-stage ultrafast laser amplifier system that operates at a repetition frequency from 1 to 10 kHz, with millijoule pulse energy and as much as 13 W of average power. The repetition rate can be adjusted continuously from 1 to 10 kHz by new all-solid-state pump laser technology. This is to our knowledge the highest average power ever obtained from a single-stage ultrafast laser amplifier system. This laser will significantly increase the average power and the repetition rate that is easily accessible for high-field experiments such as coherent x-ray generation or for laser-synchrotron studies.

Abstract
We demonstrate the use of a deformable-mirror pulse shaper, combined with an evolutionary optimization algorithm, to correct high-order residual phase aberrations in a 1-mJ, 1-kHz, 15-fs laser amplifier. Frequency-resolved optical gating measurements reveal that the output pulse duration of 15.2 fs is within our measurement error of the theoretical transform limit. This technique significantly reduces the pulse duration and the temporal prepulse energy of the pulse while increasing the peak intensity by 26%. It is demonstrated, for what is believed to be the first time, that the problem of pedestals in laser amplifiers can be addressed by spectral-domain correction.

Abstract
By use of the recently developed technique of guided-wave frequency conversion, the generation of sub-10-fs light pulses in the UV has been demonstrated for what is believed to be the first time. Cross-phase modulation of the light in a hollow waveguide produced a bandwidth of 16 nm, with a center frequency of 270 nm, at 1 kHz. A simple grating pair was used to compress the pulses to a duration of 8 fs, as measured by self-diffraction frequency-resolved optical gating. In the experiment the compressed energy was greater than 1 muJ , with a peak power of >100 MW ; the technique can be scaled to higher energy. Further improvements should make it possible to generate pulses as short as approximately 3 fs with this technique.

Abstract
An electrostatically deformable, gold-coated, silicon nitride membrane mirror was used as a phase modulator to compress pulses from 92 to 15 fs. Both an iterative genetic algorithm and single-step dispersion compensation based on frequency-resolved optical gating calibration of the mirror were used to compress pulses to within 10% of the transform limit. Frequency-resolved optical gating was used to characterize the pulses and to test the range of the deformable-mirror-based compressor.

Abstract
Phase-matched harmonic conversion of visible laser light into soft x-rays was demonstrated. The recently developed technique of guided-wave frequency conversion was used to upshift light from 800 nanometers to the range from 17 to 32 nanometers. This process increased the coherent x-ray output by factors of 10(2) to 10(3) compared to the non-phase-matched case. This source uses a small-scale (sub-millijoule) high repetition-rate laser and will enable a wide variety of new experimental investigations in linear and nonlinear x-ray science.

Abstract
We present what is believed to be the first experimental demonstration of guided-wave phase-matched frequency mixing and harmonic conversion in gases. Broad-bandwidth ultrafast pulses, tunable around 270 nm, were generated from an ultrafast Ti:sapphire amplifier system using 2? + 2? - ? parametric wave mixing in a capillary waveguide. We achieved nonresonant phase matching by coupling both the fundamental and the second-harmonic light into the lowest-order mode. The output 3? pulses have an energy of >4muJ at a 1-kHz repetition rate. Simple extensions of this method can generate higher-energy 10-20-fs pulses tunable throughout the vacuum ultraviolet.

Abstract
We have developed a 1-kHz repetition-rate Ti:sapphire laser system that can simultaneously generate high peak and average powers of 0.2TW and 4W, respectively. The laser system generates 4-mJ energy pulses with a 20-fs pulse width. We eliminated thermal lensing in the system by cooling the Ti:sapphire crystal to 125K. The output 20-fs pulses were fully characterized by use of the new technique of transient-grating frequency-resolved optical gating. We demonstrate experimentally that the pulse duration at the output is limited only by fifth-order dispersion.

Abstract
We describe a simple method for generating sub-20-fs ultraviolet light pulses with useful average powers, using a kilohertz Ti:sapphire laser system. By focusing a 22-fs, 1-mJ laser pulse in air, we obtain ultraviolet pulses with an energy of 1 microJ and at a wavelength of 266 nm and with an average power of 1 mW. The pulse duration of the ultraviolet pulses was measured to be 16 fs with frequency-resolved optical gating.

Abstract
We have developed a Ti:sapphire amplifier system capable of producing pulses of 1 mJ, with 20-22-fs pulse duration, at a 1-kHz repetition rate. The amplifier has a unique design consisting of a three-mirror multipass ring configuration with a highly doped Ti:sapphire crystal as the gain medium. Pulses of 15-fs duration from a Ti:sapphire oscillator are temporally stretched and injected into the amplifier, which is an eight-pass system with a total gain of 10(6). The amplif ier is more than 10% efficient, and the shot-to-shot energy fluctuation of the output is less than 2%. The output beam focuses to 1.8 times the diffraction limit.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe a functional milestone scale (FMS) for measuring functional progression following total hip arthroplasty and to demonstrate that this scale meets accepted standards of scale construction. METHODS Inter-observer reliability of the scale was determined for 30 patients using a kappa coefficient of concordance (k) for ordinal data, representing 221 pairs of observations. There were 79, 54, 44, and 44 pairs of observations for transfer, walker, crutch, and stair ambulation, respectively. RESULTS The k coefficient ranged from 0.82 to 0.91. Agreement between therapists was almost perfect according to the criteria of Feinstein. CONCLUSIONS The FMS exhibits substantial inter-observer reliability and moderate to substantial validity. We have demonstrated its clinical applications as well as showing it to be a useful management and research tool.

Abstract
We demonstrate the use of intracavity frequency doubling in a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser to generate pulses as short as 14 fs. We use a 100-microm-thick lithium triborate (LiB(3)O(5)) crystal in a standard Ti:sapphire laser cavity for the frequency doubling. The average blue output power is 30 mW in each of two beams directly from the laser and 11 mW after compression. The repetition rate is 91 MHz, and the spectral bandwidth is a near-transform-limited 19.2 nm centered at 416 nm. To our knowledge, these results represent the shortest pulse duration yet demonstrated in the blue region of the spectrum.

Abstract
The technique of self-induced plasma shuttering can be used to suppress prepulse energy from an ultrashort pulse. If a femtosecond pulse is incident upon a transparent target, the leading edge passes through while the peak reflects owing to ionization breakdown at the surface. We describe a fluid jet, enclosed in a vacuum chamber, that allows this technique to be used at high repetition rates. The jet has excellent stability and a fast (~500 micros) recovery time. At normal incidence, we demonstrate a reflection efficiency of 70% with a prepulse-to-main-pulse energy suppression ratio of >10, while at Brewster incidence we measure a reflection efficiency of 38% with a suppression ratio of nearly 400.

Abstract
We have generated sub-17-fs-duration pulses directly from a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. These pulses are near transform limited, with a wavelength centered at 817 nm, a pulse repetition rate of 80 MHz, and an average power of 500 mW. By minimizing the amount of material inside the laser cavity and choosing the correct glass for the intracavity prism pair, third-order dispersion in the laser can be significantly reduced compared with that in previous designs. Extracavity compensation for group-velocity dispersion in the output coupler and autocorrelator optics is necessary to measure this pulse width. To our knowledge this laser generates pulses substantially shorter than any other laser to date.
