Co-processing of olive bagasse with crude rapeseed oil via pyrolysis

The co-pyrolysis of olive bagasse with crude rapeseed oil at different blend ratios was investigated at 500ºC in a fixed bed reactor. The effect of olive bagasse to crude rapeseed oil ratio on the product distributions and properties of the pyrolysis products were comparatively investigated. The addition of crude rapeseed oil into olive bagasse in the co-pyrolysis led to formation of upgraded biofuels in terms of liquid yields and properties. While the pyrolysis of olive bagasse produced a liquid yield of 52.5 wt %, the highest liquid yield of 73.5 wt % was obtained from the co-pyrolysis of olive bagasse with crude rapeseed oil at a blend ratio of 1:4. The bio-oil derived from olive bagasse contained 5% naphtha, 10% heavy naphtha, 30% gas oil, and 55% heavy gas oil. In the case of bio-oil obtained from the co-pyrolysis of olive bagasse with crude rapeseed oil at a blend ratio of 1:4, the light naphtha, heavy naphtha, and light gas oil content increased. This is an indication of the improved characteristics of the bio-oil obtained from the co-processing. The heating value of bio-oil from the pyrolysis of olive bagasse alone was 34.6 MJ kg^-1 and the heating values of bio-oils obtained from the co-pyrolysis of olive bagasse with crude rapeseed oil ranged from 37.6 to 41.6 MJ kg^-1. It was demonstrated that the co-processing of waste biomass with crude plant oil is a good alternative to improve bio-oil yields and properties.

Removal of lead (II) ions from aqueous solutions onto activated carbon derived from waste biomass

The removal of lead (II) ions from aqueous solutions was carried out using an activated carbon prepared from a waste biomass. The effects of various parameters such as pH, contact time, initial concentration of lead (II) ions, and temperature on the adsorption process were investigated. Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis after adsorption reveals the accumulation of lead (II) ions onto activated carbon. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to analyze equilibrium data. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of activated carbon was found to be 476.2 mg g⁻¹. The kinetic data were evaluated and the pseudo-second-order equation provided the best correlation. Thermodynamic parameters suggest that the adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of cornelian cherry stones for bio-oil production

Hydrothermal liquefaction of cornelian cherry stones, fruit processing wastes, was performed at 200, 250 and 300°C with residence times of 0, 15, and 30min. The highest total bio-oil yield was obtained at both 250 and 300°C for the shortest residence time (0min) and found to be 28wt.%.ca. The solid residue yields were reduced as both the hydrothermal liquefaction temperature and the holding time was increased. The highest heating values of LBO and HBO were estimated to be 23.86 and 28.35MJkg(-1), respectively. The major compounds identified in the LBOs were furfurals, phenols, acetic acid and vanillin. The major components of the HBOs contained furfurals, phenols and fatty acids. Among major identified compounds in the HBOs, the relative concentration of Linoleic acid was the highest both at 250 and 300°C.

Preparation and characterization of activated carbon from waste biomass

Lignocellulosic materials are good and cheap precursors for the production of activated carbon. In this study, activated carbons were prepared from the pyrolysis of soybean oil cake at 600 and 800 degrees C by chemical activation with K(2)CO(3) and KOH. The influence of temperature and type of chemical reagents on the porosity development was investigated and discussed. K(2)CO(3) was found more effective than KOH as a chemical reagent under identical conditions in terms of both porosity development and yields of the activated carbons. The maximum surface area (1352.86 m(2)g(-1)) was obtained at 800 degrees C with K(2)CO(3) activation which lies in the range of commercial activated carbons. Elemental analyses of the activated carbons indicate insignificant sulphur content for all activated carbons. The ash and sulphur contents of the activated carbons obtained with chemical activation by K(2)CO(3) were lower than those by chemical activation with KOH.

Activated carbons from waste biomass by sulfuric acid activation and their use on methylene blue adsorption

Preparation of the activated carbons from sunflower oil cake by sulphuric acid activation with different impregnation ratios was carried out. Laboratory prepared activated carbons were used as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. Liquid-phase adsorption experiments were conducted and the maximum adsorption capacity of each activated carbon was determined. The effects of various process parameters i.e., temperature, pH, initial methylene blue concentration, contact time on the adsorption capacity of each activated carbon were investigated. The kinetic models for MB adsorption onto the activated carbons were studied. Langmuir isotherm showed better fit than Freundlich isotherm for all activated carbon samples. The rates of adsorption were found to conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetics with good correlation. The separation factor (R(L)) revealed the favorable nature of the isotherm of the MB activated carbon system.

Hydrothermal upgrading of biomass: effect of K2CO3 concentration and biomass/water ratio on products distribution

Catalytic hydrothermal treatment of wood biomass was performed at 280 degrees C for 15 min in the presence of K2CO3 with different concentrations and biomass/water ratio (thermal). Oil products were extracted from both liquid and solid portion by different solvents and analyzed them individually. The biomass to water ratio has an important effect on product distribution and composition of oil products. Oil 1 (ether extract) with K2CO3 contained mainly phenolic compounds. Benzenediol derivatives were observed with 0.94 M K2CO3 concentration and they were not formed at lower concentrations (0.235 and 0.47 M). The decrease of solid residue was achieved to 4% with 0.94 M K2CO3 at 280 degrees C for 15 min. The volatility distribution of hydrocarbons (ether extract) were characterized by using C-NP gram. The distribution of oxygenated hydrocarbons changed depending upon the biomass to water ratio and concentration of K2CO3 solution.

Growth and aflatoxin production ofaspergillus flavus on some spices marketed in Turkey

Growth and aflatoxin production byAspergillus flavus (MAM-268 C17, TNS=98) on autoclaved coconut, black pepper, crushed red pepper, red pepper powder were studied. Coconut were found to be a better substrate for fungal growth, as well as aflatoxin production. Red pepper powder could be considered as a poor substrate for fungal growth. The amount of aflatoxin found in crushed red pepper under laboratory conditions is much less compared with coconut, black pepper and red pepper powder.
