Abstract
Non-traumatic acute bilateral compartment syndrome is a rare condition that may lead to limb ischemia. We describe a case of this syndrome occurring after a five-kilometer walk in a young woman receiving chronic treatment with lurasidone, leading to a bilateral foot-drop and rhabdomyolysis of the anterolateral compartment of both legs. Due to her late presentation in the emergency department, we opted for a conservative approach, closely monitoring her renal function. We noticed a subsequent clinical and biochemical improvement over the following days, with the patient returning to her daily routine in a matter of weeks, despite a persisting bilateral foot drop. Since atypical antipsychotics are known to be associated with rhabdomyolysis, while possibly exerting a toxic effect on mitochondria, we hypothesize that a mild aerobic physical exertion might have triggered the event, in the context of an iatrogenic muscle susceptibility to oxidative distress.

Abstract
This review presents the current state of aflatoxin risk prediction models and their potential for value actors throughout the food chain in sub-Saharan Africa, with a specific focus on improving smallholder farmer management practices. Several empirical and mechanistic models have been developed either in academic research or by private sector aggregators and processors in high-income countries including Australia, the USA, and Southern Europe, but these models have been only minimally applied in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is significant potential and increasing need due to climate variability. Predictions can be made based on historic occurrence data using either a mechanistic microbiological framework for aflatoxin accumulation or an empirical model based on statistical correlations with climate conditions and local agronomic factors. Model results can then be distributed to smallholders through private, public, or mobile extension services, used by policymakers for strategy or policy, or utilised by private sector institutions for management decisions. Specific agricultural advice can be given during the three most critical points in the phenological cycle: preseason insight including sowing timing and crop varieties, preharvest advice about management and harvest timing, and postharvest optimal practices including storage, drying, and market information. Model development for sub-Saharan Africa is limited by a dearth of georeferenced aflatoxin occurrence data and real-time high resolution climate data; the wide diversity of farm typologies each with significant information and technology gaps; a prevalence of informal market structures and lack of economic incentives systems; and general lack of awareness around aflatoxins and best management practices to mitigate risk. Given advancements towards solving these challenges, predictive aflatoxin models can be integrated into decision support platforms to focus on optimisation of value for smallholders by minimising yield and nutritional losses, which can propagate value throughout the production and postharvest phases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the COVID-19 outbreak, a very high number of infected patients developed pneumonia and many of them complicated with acute respiratory distress syndrome. The optimal management of respiratory failure and the role of lung ultrasound imaging in the evaluation of efficacy of treatment are unknown. METHODS In March 2020 we treated 18 patients with mild and moderate ARDS secondary to SARS-CoV-2 with non-invasive continuous positive airway pressure therapy (NI-CPAP). All patients underwent lung ultrasound imaging to verify the entity of lung recruitment after NI-CPAP initiation. RESULTS After one hour of treatment we observed a significant improvement in PaO2/FiO2 ratio in 10 patients. Notably, only 50 % of them reached an effective improvement in lung aeration detectable with lung ultrasound. In the other 50 % or patients the improvement in PaO2/FiO2 might be related to blood redistribution and reverse of hypoxic vasoconstriction. CONCLUSION NI- CPAP is a valid therapeutic option in mild and moderate ARDS secondary SARS-CoV-2. Lung recruitment detected by means of lung ultrasound is a relevant but not the exclusive mechanism that underlies the therapeutic efficacy of NI-CPAP in this clinical setting.

Abstract
Alopecia areata (AA) is a complex immune-mediated disorder, which is difficult to treat. The available treatment options seem to have limited benefit, help only some patients and have a high relapse rate. We evaluated a new therapeutic option for moderate to severe AA based on the combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) and microneedling (MN). In total, 14 patients were enrolled, and these were randomly divided into 3 groups: Group A (MN alone; n = 9), Group B (ALA-PDT alone; n = 15) and Group C (combination of MN and ALA-PDT; n = 17). All patients were treated once every 3 weeks for a total of six treatments. The best clinical outcome was achieved in Group C, with complete hair regrowth observed in three patients, and an improvement of ≥ 50% and < 50% of the treated areas obtained in seven and six patients, respectively. Our report suggests that combination of ALA-PDT with MN could be an additional therapeutic option in moderate to severe AA, as MN allows better skin penetration of ALA and subsequent indirect immunosuppression.

Abstract
Background: In the case of a degenerated intervertebral disc (IVD), even though spinal fusion has provided good short-term clinical results, an alteration of the spine stability has been demonstrated by long-term studies. In this context, different designs of IVD prostheses have been proposed as alternative to spinal fusion. However, over the past few years, much of the recent research has been devoted to IVD tissue engineering, even if several limitations related to the complex structure of IVD are still presented.Purpose/Aim: Accordingly, the aim of the current paper was to develop a strategy in designing customised multiphasic nucleus/annulus scaffolds for IVD tissue engineering, benefiting from the great potential of reverse engineering, additive manufacturing and gels technology.Materials and Methods: The device consisted of a customised additive-manufactured poly(ε-caprolactone) scaffold with tailored architectural features as annulus and a cell-laden collagen-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid-based material as nucleus with specific rheological and functional properties. To this aim, injectability and viscoelastic properties of the hydrogel were analyzed. Furthermore, a mechanical and biological characterization of cell-laden multiphasic nucleus/annulus scaffold was performed.Results and Conclusions: Analyses on the developed devices demonstrated appropriate viscoelastic and mechanical properties. As evidenced by rheological tests, the hydrogel showed a shear-thinning behaviour, supporting the possibility to inject the material. The mechanical characterization highlighted a compressive modulus which falls in the range of lumbar discs, with the typical initial J-shaped stress-strain curve of natural IVDs. Furthermore, preliminary biological tests showed that human mesenchymal stem cells were viable over the culture period.

Abstract
Marine litter has significant ecological, social and economic impacts, ultimately raising welfare and conservation concerns. Assessing marine litter hotspots or inferring potential areas of accumulation are challenging topics of marine research. Nevertheless, models able to predict the distribution of marine litter on the seabed are still limited. In this work, a set of Artificial Neural Networks were trained to both model the effect of environmental descriptors on litter distribution and estimate the amount of marine litter in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The first goal involved the use of self-organizing maps in order to highlight the importance of environmental descriptors in affecting marine litter density. The second goal was achieved by developing a multilayer perceptron model, which proved to be an efficient method to estimate the regional quantity of seabed marine litter. Results demonstrated that machine learning could be a suitable approach in the assessment of the marine litter issues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the last few years, several articles on dermoscopy of non-neoplastic dermatoses have been published, yet there is poor consistency in the terminology among different studies. OBJECTIVES We aimed to standardize the dermoscopic terminology and identify basic parameters to evaluate in non-neoplastic dermatoses through an expert consensus. METHODS The modified Delphi method was followed, with two phases: (i) identification of a list of possible items based on a systematic literature review and (ii) selection of parameters by a panel of experts through a three-step iterative procedure (blinded e-mail interaction in rounds 1 and 3 and a face-to-face meeting in round 2). Initial panellists were recruited via e-mail from all over the world based on their expertise on dermoscopy of non-neoplastic dermatoses. RESULTS Twenty-four international experts took part in all rounds of the consensus and 13 further international participants were also involved in round 2. Five standardized basic parameters were identified: (i) vessels (including morphology and distribution); (ii) scales (including colour and distribution); (iii) follicular findings; (iv) 'other structures' (including colour and morphology); and (v) 'specific clues'. For each of them, possible variables were selected, with a total of 31 different subitems reaching agreement at the end of the consensus (all of the 29 proposed initially plus two more added in the course of the consensus procedure). CONCLUSIONS This expert consensus provides a set of standardized basic dermoscopic parameters to follow when evaluating inflammatory, infiltrative and infectious dermatoses. This tool, if adopted by clinicians and researchers in this field, is likely to enhance the reproducibility and comparability of existing and future research findings and uniformly expand the universal knowledge on dermoscopy in general dermatology. Abstract
BACKGROUND Pink skin tumours are difficult to differentiate, clinically and dermoscopically. In previous studies, mainly focused on pigmented lesions, pattern analysis provided the best sensitivity and specificity values, as compared to other algorithms. These findings suggest that the global dermoscopic appearance, based on the evaluation of prevalent features, could represent a valuable and practical approach even when dealing with pink lesions. OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a new dermoscopic approach for pink tumours based on the prevalent criterion, as compared to a standard diagnostic method (Menzies algorithm). METHODS The databases of two referral centres were retrospectively evaluated to retrieve dermoscopic images of amelanotic/hypomelanotic skin lesions. Two experts in dermoscopy, blinded for the final diagnosis and for clinical and demographic information, evaluated separately dermoscopic pictures of 1000 lesions according to the Menzies score and to the prevalent criterion method. RESULTS According to the high sensitivity model of the Menzies score, 129 (12.9%) lesions were considered as non-suspicious (of which 16 were false negative) and 871 (87.1%) as suspicious (of which 212 were false positive), with 97.6% sensitivity and 34.8% specificity. According to the high specificity model, 370 (37%) lesions were evaluated as non-suspicious (of which 105 were false negative) and 630 (63%) as suspicious (of which 60 were false positive), with 84.4% sensitivity and 81.5% specificity. Concerning the prevalent criterion method, 316 (31.6%) lesions were evaluated as non-suspicious (of which 46 were false negative) and 684 (68.4) as suspicious (of which 55 were false positive), with 93.2% sensitivity and 83.1% specificity. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that focusing on the prevalent dermoscopic features could allow to detect malignant pink tumours with similar sensitivity but higher specificity than using the conventional Menzies scoring system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fishing activities can influence foraging behaviour of many seabird species worldwide. Seabirds are attracted by fishing vessels which can facilitate access to demersal fish as a novel food resource that otherwise would be unavailable. On the other hand, intense fishing activities cause depletion of fish stocks with a reduction of natural prey available for seabirds. Moreover, fisheries discards can have lower nutritional value than natural prey. However, the importance of fisheries discard for seabirds and the possible implications on their foraging ecology is still poorly understood. In this study, we analysed the interactions of Scopoli's shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) during their foraging trips with fishing vessels. We combined the GPS and accelerometer data of shearwaters with the GPS data gathered during the same period from fishing vessels. Accelerometers allowed us to identify the main behaviours of birds. RESULTS The presence of fishing vessels significantly affected the individual behaviour of Scopoli's shearwaters. Birds increased the time spent sitting on the water within 1.28 ± 0.13 km of fishing vessels likely feeding or waiting for discards. Approaches towards vessels within the interaction distance were therefore classified as an interaction and were recorded in about 40% of individuals. Birds interacting with fisheries had longer flight time during their foraging trips and covered longer distances to reach more distant foraging areas compared with individuals not approaching vessels. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that fisheries discard consumption might not be a profitable source of food for Scopoli's shearwaters. Despite the high density of fishing vessels in the home range of Scopoli's shearwater, most individuals did not interact with them. Accordingly, scavenging individuals showed a lower foraging efficiency than their conspecifics. Intraspecific competition for foraging areas might play an important role for the foraging decision of birds to consume fisheries discards.

Abstract
Aims Serum calcitonin (CT) assay is commonly used in the diagnosis and follow-up of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The aim of this study was to ascertain whether serum CT levels, measured in the first few days after surgery, could be used to evaluate the efficacy of treatment. Methods A group of 33 patients was studied. In all patients the follow-up was more than 20 months. Results Preoperatively basal CT serum levels were high in all patients. Twenty-four hours after surgery CT serum levels dropped to within the normal range in 8 patients and 72 hours after operation in 7 others. In this group 1 patient was at stage I, 11 at stage II and 3 at stage III. Basal and pentagastrin stimulated CT levels continued to be in the normal range in these 15 patients 6 and 12 months after surgery and at the subsequent year by follow-up visits. No clinical or radiological evidence of disease was found during the follow-up in this group. In the other 18 patients CT was reduced but still high 72 hours after surgery; 6 months later basal serum CT levels continued to be elevated or responsive to pentagastrin stimulation. In this group restaging showed tumor relapse in the thyroid bed in 2 patients, cervical lymphadenopathy in 11, and distant metastases (bone, liver) in 3. Conclusions Immediate postoperative CT serum levels seem to be the most useful index to evaluate the efficacy of surgical treatment and the presence of residual neoplastic tissue.

Deep-sea coral assemblages are key components of marine ecosystems that generate habitats for fish and invertebrate communities and act as marine biodiversity hot spots. Because of their life history traits, deep-sea corals are highly vulnerable to human impacts such as fishing. They are an indicator of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs), therefore their conservation is essential to preserve marine biodiversity. In the Mediterranean Sea deep-sea coral habitats are associated with commercially important crustaceans, consequently their abundance has dramatically declined due to the effects of trawling. Marine spatial planning is required to ensure that the conservation of these habitats is achieved. Species distribution models were used to investigate the distribution of two critically endangered octocorals (Funiculina quadrangularis and Isidella elongata) in the central Mediterranean as a function of environmental and fisheries variables. Results show that both species exhibit species-specific habitat preferences and spatial patterns in response to environmental variables, but the impact of trawling on their distribution differed. In particular F. quadrangularis can overlap with fishing activities, whereas I. elongata occurs exclusively where fishing is low or absent. This study represents the first attempt to identify key areas for the protection of soft and compact mud VMEs in the central Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract
In total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip replacement (THR) the restoration of the normal joint function represents a fundamental feature. A prosthetic joint must be able to provide motions and to transmit functional loads. As reported in the literature, the stress distribution may be altered in bones after the implantation of a total joint prosthesis. Some scientific works have also correlated uncemented TKA to a progressive decrease of bone density below the tibial component. Antibiotic-loaded bone cements are commonly employed in conjunction with systemic antibiotics to treat infections. Furthermore, nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity have been widely analysed. Accordingly, the current research was focused on a preliminary analysis of the mechanical and antibacterial activity of a PMMA-based bone cement loaded with gold nanoparticles. The obtained results demonstrated that nanocomposite cements with a specific concentration of gold nanoparticles improved the punching performance and antibacterial activity. However, critical aspects were found in the optimization of the nanocomposite bone cement. Evaluation of the in vitro effects of bacterial adhesion and proliferation on modified bone cement samples. Abstract
In 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and 15 other federal departments and agencies proposed revisions to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects. In this Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), the departments sought to strengthen, modernize, and make more effective human subjects regulations while reducing administrative burden, delay, and ambiguity. We reviewed public comments from National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) institutions on key provisions of the NPRM to understand how the proposed changed were received at research-intensive institutions. CTSA institutions responding to the proposed rule were predominantly opposed to the major proposals, including proposed changes to the treatment of de-identified biospecimens, demonstrating a lack of support from academic medical centers. In January 2017, a Final Rule was issued. We compare the Final Rule to what was proposed.

Abstract
We assessed the in vitro effects of interferon beta-1b (IFNβ-1b), cyclophosphamide (CY), and azathioprine (AZA) alone and of the combination of IFNβ-1b with CY or AZA on the production of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in 10 patients with multiple sclerosis. Cytokine levels were determined at baseline and after stimulation with IFNβ-1b, CY, and AZA alone or with the combination of IFNβ-1b with CY or AZA. The combination of IFNβ-1b with CY resulted in a statistically significant decrease in the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) (P=0.003) and tumor necrosis factor alfa (TNF-α) (P=0.03). An additive effect on the production of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) (P=0.2) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) (P=0.6), and a positive interaction on the production of interleukin-4 (IL-4) (P=0.08) were observed although the findings were not statistically significant. The combination of IFNβ-1b with AZA resulted in a significant negative effect on the production of IL-2 (P=0.006), whereas TNF-α (P=0.02), IFN-γ (P=0.03), IL-4 (P=0.2), and IL-10 (P=0.3) were not statistically impacted. Our data show that CY was able to improve the effects of IFNβ-1b on the ratio of Th1/Th2 cytokines.

Abstract
The kinase suppressor of Ras 1 (KSR1) has a fundamental role in mitogenic signaling by scaffolding components of the Ras/MAP kinase pathway. In response to Ras activation, KSR1 assembles a tripartite kinase complex that optimally transfers signals generated at the cell membrane to activate ERK. We describe a novel mechanism of ERK attenuation based on ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis of KSR1. Stimulation of membrane receptors by hormones or growth factors induced KSR1 polyubiquitination, which paralleled a decline of ERK1/2 signaling. We identified praja2 as the E3 ligase that ubiquitylates KSR1. We showed that praja2-dependent regulation of KSR1 is involved in the growth of cancer cells and in the maintenance of undifferentiated pluripotent state in mouse embryonic stem cells. The dynamic interplay between the ubiquitin system and the kinase scaffold of the Ras pathway shapes the activation profile of the mitogenic cascade. By controlling KSR1 levels, praja2 directly affects compartmentalized ERK activities, impacting on physiological events required for cell proliferation and maintenance of embryonic stem cell pluripotency.

Abstract
The history of medicine is replete with examples of debunked myths, and in daily clinical dermatological practice, we must still counter many misconceptions regarding pigmented lesions, both with patients and other medical practitioners. Debunking myths and attempting to explain the reasons for these erroneous beliefs are the purposes of this review. The literature review has been partially guided by the results obtained from an online questionnaire conducted on an Italian website (www.vediamocichiara.it) from February 15, 2015 to March 15, 2015. The remaining discussed were selected on the basis of the existing literature and our personal experience. In order to explore these misconceptions, the following are the seven most salient questions that require investigation: (i) Is it dangerous to excise moles?; (ii) Is it dangerous to traumatize moles?; (iii) Are plantar moles worrisome?; (iv) Is it necessary to selectively apply sunscreen to moles?; (v) Is it inadvisable to partially biopsy a melanoma?; (vi) Do moles turn into melanoma?; and (vii) Is it necessary to perform sentinel lymph node biopsy for thin melanomas and for atypical Spitz naevi? Myths are ubiquitous, being prevalent in dermatological practice, with many of them concerning pigmented skin lesions. By encouraging critical analysis by patients and medical practitioners, the birth and perpetuation of myths can potentially be minimized, for the ultimate benefit of patients. This requires a scientific approach to be rigorously applied to dermatology, with critical questioning of unsubstantiated hypotheses including those emanating from the mass media as well as from respected sources.

Abstract
Numerous studies have indicated that BMP4 signaling is involved in the regulation of the early steps of development. In mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs), BMP4 is crucial to sustain pluripotency and blocks differentiation towards neural fate. Here, through a systematic analysis of miRNAs in ESCs, we establish that BMP4 signaling regulates miR-23a, 27a and 24-2, through the recruitment of phospho-Smads at the promoter of the gene encoding this miRNA cluster. Suppression of miR-23a/b, 27a/b and 24 does not affect self-renewal or pluripotency, but induces an evident change of ESC differentiation, with a significant increase of the cells undergoing apoptosis after the transition from ESCs to epiblast stem cells (EpiSCs). BMP4 has been previously reported to cause apoptosis during ESC differentiation. By blocking BMP4 signaling, we completely prevent the apoptosis induced by suppression of the miRs. This suggests that the effects of miR suppression are the result of enhanced BMP4 signaling. This hypothesis is further supported by the observation that Smad5, the transcription factor downstream of the BMP4 receptor, is targeted by the miRNAs of the 23a and 23b clusters. Altogether, our results highlight the existence of a regulatory loop, involving Smad5 and the miR-23a clusters, that modulates the apoptotic response of ESCs to BMP4.

Abstract
The ablative role of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in neuroblastoma (NB) is still controversial due to the possible CO₂ pneumoperitoneum side-effects on tumor aggressiveness. It is known that CO₂ produces hypoxic condition with changes in tumor microenvironment influencing cell functions. Here we investigated whether CO₂ exposure affects the transcription factor HIF-1α and the apoptotic signalling pathway in SH-SY5Y NB cells. SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to a pressure of 15 mmHg CO₂ (100%) for 4 h (T0) and then moved to normal condition for 24 h (T₂₄). In control and CO₂ -exposed cells, we analyzed the mRNA levels and DNA binding activity of HIF-1α. We also evaluated the proliferative activity and cell viability as well as caspase-9/3 cleavage and nuclear fragmentation. A significant increase in HIF- 1α activation was observed in SH-SY5Y cells exposed to CO₂ compared to control cells. CO₂ treatment also decreased the proliferation rate and the percentage of viable cells. In addition, the expression and cleavage of caspase-9 and -3 were significantly increased in NB cells exposed to CO₂. These data correlated with apoptotic feature observed in CO₂ -treated NB cells. Our findings show that CO₂ -induced hypoxic condition exerts cytotoxic effects on NB cells by eliciting mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and thereby improving the understanding of the possible clinical impact of CO₂ pneumoperitoneum on NB behaviour.

Abstract
Novel additive manufacturing processes are increasingly recognized as ideal techniques to produce 3D biodegradable structures with optimal pore size and spatial distribution, providing an adequate mechanical support for tissue regeneration while shaping in-growing tissues. With regard to the mechanical and biological performances of 3D scaffolds, pore size and geometry play a crucial role. In this study, a novel integrated automated system for the production and in vitro culture of 3D constructs, known as BioCell Printing, was used only to manufacture poly(ε-caprolactone) scaffolds for tissue engineering; the influence of pore size and shape on their mechanical and biological performances was investigated. Imposing a single lay-down pattern of 0°/90° and varying the filament distance, it was possible to produce scaffolds with square interconnected pores with channel sizes falling in the range of 245-433 µm, porosity 49-57% and a constant road width. Three different lay-down patterns were also adopted (0°/90°, 0°/60/120° and 0°/45°/90°/135°), thus resulting in scaffolds with quadrangular, triangular and complex internal geometries, respectively. Mechanical compression tests revealed a decrease of scaffold stiffness with the increasing porosity and number of deposition angles (from 0°/90° to 0°/45°/90°/135°). Results from biological analysis, carried out using human mesenchymal stem cells, suggest a strong influence of pore size and geometry on cell viability. On the other hand, after 21 days of in vitro static culture, it was not possible to detect any significant variation in terms of cell morphology promoted by scaffold topology. As a first systematic analysis, the obtained results clearly demonstrate the potential of the BioCell Printing process to produce 3D scaffolds with reproducible well organized architectures and tailored mechanical properties.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Do patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have macroscopic and/or microscopic placental alterations? SUMMARY ANSWER The placental structure in patients with PCOS, even in those with uncomplicated pregnancy, is altered. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The spectrum of pregnancy complications seems to have a common denominator: a defective trophoblast invasion and placentation. In women with PCOS, alterations in endovascular trophoblast invasion related to insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism have been observed. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION For this prospective case-control study, 30 pregnant patients with PCOS (cases) and 60 healthy pregnant women without PCOS features (controls) were enrolled and studied until delivery. Clinical, biochemical, ultrasonographic and obstetric data were recorded. The baseline clinical and biochemical data for screening for PCOS and for inclusion/exclusion were obtained before the seventh week of gestation. At delivery, placentas were collected and detailed macroscopic and microscopic analyses were performed. PARTICIPANTS, SETTING, METHODS Cases and controls were matched for age and BMI (all <30 kg/m(2)). The matching procedure was one-to-two. Only subjects with spontaneous conception and uncomplicated pregnancies were included in the final analysis. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Placental weight (P = 0.04), thickness (P = 0.02), density (P = 0.02) and volume (P = 0.01) were significantly inferior in women with, compared with those without PCOS. The placentas from patients with PCOS more frequently had an irregular shape (P = 0.03) and a higher cord coiling index (P = 0.02). Differences between cases and controls also concerned the extent of villous (P = 0.04) and intervillous (P = 0.01) spaces, the extent of fibrosis (P = 0.03), endovascular trophoblast (depth, extension and morphometry) (P < 0.05) and mitotic activity (P = 0.01). The percentage of patients with lesions [22/30 (73.3%) versus 25/60 (41.7%), respectively; P = 0.01] and the mean number of placental lesions (3.5 ± 2.1 versus 1.4 ± 1.1, respectively; P = 0.02) were higher in the PCOS than the control group. The odds ratio for placental alterations, adjusted for weight gain, was 2.8 (95% confidence interval 1.3-9.9). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The main limitation of the study was the selection of a specific PCOS sample, which is probably not representative of the PCOS phenotype as a whole. In fact, we excluded patients with PCOS who were obese and who achieved a pregnancy following the use of ovulation inductors or assisted reproduction techniques. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS The present study is the first to demonstrate that the morphology and microscopic structure of placenta in patients with PCOS with an uncomplicated pregnancy are altered. Further studies are needed to assess a correlation of these changes with the increased risk of obstetric complications observed in some pregnancies of women with PCOS. Abstract
In this study, clonal lines from North American resident and migratory populations of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss adapted to different geographical conditions and with different domestication histories were characterized morphologically. Lines reared in a common-garden experiment were characterized for external shape and meristic values, searching for a general pattern of morphological variation due to exposure to captive conditions. A sharp distinction was identified between wild and captive lines. The body profile was deeper in captive lines, with longer dorsal and anal fins and shorter and deeper caudal peduncles. Highly significant differences were also identified in meristic values among the lines but no consistent relation between meristic values and domestication status was detected. This morphological characterization will facilitate the selection of lines with divergent phenotypes for subsequent quantitative trait loci analysis, aimed at identifying genome regions linked with morphological adaptive response to captive conditions.

Abstract
In biomedicine, magnetic nanoparticles provide some attractive possibilities because they possess peculiar physical properties that permit their use in a wide range of applications. The concept of magnetic guidance basically spans from drug delivery and hyperthermia treatment of tumours, to tissue engineering, such as magneto-mechanical stimulation/activation of cell constructs and mechanosensitive ion channels, magnetic cell-seeding procedures, and controlled cell proliferation and differentiation. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to develop fully biodegradable and magnetic nanocomposite substrates for bone tissue engineering by embedding iron-doped hydroxyapatite (FeHA) nanoparticles in a poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) matrix. X-ray diffraction analyses enabled the demonstration that the phase composition and crystallinity of the magnetic FeHA were not affected by the process used to develop the nanocomposite substrates. The mechanical characterization performed through small punch tests has evidenced that inclusion of 10 per cent by weight of FeHA would represent an effective reinforcement. The inclusion of nanoparticles also improves the hydrophilicity of the substrates as evidenced by the lower values of water contact angle in comparison with those of neat PCL. The results from magnetic measurements confirmed the superparamagnetic character of the nanocomposite substrates, indicated by a very low coercive field, a saturation magnetization strictly proportional to the FeHA content and a strong history dependence in temperature sweeps. Regarding the biological performances, confocal laser scanning microscopy and AlamarBlue assay have provided qualitative and quantitative information on human mesenchymal stem cell adhesion and viability/proliferation, respectively, whereas the obtained ALP/DNA values have shown the ability of the nanocomposite substrates to support osteogenic differentiation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE An animal model of female Wistar species of rats was developed to study the early effects of ileocystoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bladder augmentation using ileum and a sham operation (cistostomy) were performed in 14 and 6 female Wistar rats, rispectively. Urine was obtained for culture and urinalysis in all rats at the time of operation and at the time of the sacrifice. Seven rats underwent ileocystoplasty and three shams were sacrificed after one and three months. In all rats sacrificed three months after ileocystoplasty, blood sample drawn for serum electrolytes, blood urea, nitrogen creatine and bicarbonate was performed. Post mortem histopathological examination of the ileal patch and of kidneys was performed. RESULTS The cultures of the urine were positive in 1 out 7 (14.3%) and in 4 out 7 (57%) after one and three months after ileocystoplasty, respectively. Urinary pH of the augmented group was significantly higher in treated rats than in shams (p < 0.05). At sacrifice three months post operatively, the serum chloride concentration was significantly higher in augmented than shams (p < 0.05). Bladder calculi were formed in 28.6% of ileocystoplasty. Histopathological examination of the enteropatch showed urothelialization of the graft and kidneys showed a significant glomerular depletion. CONCLUSION Our data confirm an early significant enhancement of urinary pH in rats underwent ileocystoplasty and the stone formation is a frequent event. Already three months after ileocystoplasty urothelialization extended from the side of anastomosis towards the central portion of the ileal graft. Moreover, a significant improvement of serum creatine, sign of glomerular overload and progressive glomerular depletion were recorded in treated rats, probably as a consequence of water and electrolyte resoption through the intestinal graft.
