Evidence for a finite-momentum Cooper pair in tricolor d-wave superconducting superlattices

Fermionic superfluidity with a nontrivial Cooper-pairing, beyond the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, is a captivating field of study in quantum many-body systems. In particular, the search for superconducting states with finite-momentum pairs has long been a challenge, but establishing its existence has long suffered from the lack of an appropriate probe to reveal its momentum. Recently, it has been proposed that the nonreciprocal electron transport is the most powerful probe for the finite-momentum pairs, because it directly couples to the supercurrents. Here we reveal such a pairing state by the non-reciprocal transport on tricolor superlattices with strong spin-orbit coupling combined with broken inversion-symmetry consisting of atomically thin d-wave superconductor CeCoIn5. We find that while the second-harmonic resistance exhibits a distinct dip anomaly at the low-temperature (T)/high-magnetic field (H) corner in the HT-plane for H applied to the antinodal direction of the d-wave gap, such an anomaly is absent for H along the nodal direction. By carefully isolating extrinsic effects due to vortex dynamics, we reveal the presence of a non-reciprocal response originating from intrinsic superconducting properties characterized by finite-momentum pairs. We attribute the high-field state to the helical superconducting state, wherein the phase of the order parameter is spontaneously spatially modulated.

A fat containing combined neuroendocrine carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma in the liver: A case report

A 79-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of increased hepatobiliary enzyme levels. Dynamic computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a liver tumor measuring 60mm containing fat foci at the cranial aspect of the tumor. We diagnosed the patient with hypovascular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and fat deposition, and performed a caudate lobe resection. Pathology examination revealed two intermingled components: moderately differentiated HCC with fat deposition and neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC). Primary combined NEC and HCC is extremely rare. To our knowledge, this is the first report of combined NEC and HCC including a fat component. HCC is the most common primary hepatic malignancy with fat. HCC might include fat, even if HCC coexists with another type of cancer. The imaging characteristics of and HCC with another type of cancer vary depending on the amount of each component. We should not simply diagnose such tumors as HCC, but think about the possibilities of HCC with another type of cancer, because there is a fat component.

A case of adenomyosis with leiomyoma that was effectively treated with relugolix and kamishoyosan add-on therapy

BACKGROUND

Recently, relugolix, an oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor antagonist, has been considered an effective therapy for leiomyoma based on a phase 3 study in Japanese women. Leiomyoma combined with severe adenomyosis occasionally occurs in perimenopausal women; however, little information on the effectiveness of relugolix against severe adenomyosis exists.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 49-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with acute lower abdominal pain and abnormal uterine bleeding. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple leiomyomas with diffuse adenomyosis. Left hydrosalpinx was also observed. The patient refused surgical treatment and preferred oral relugolix. Since she experienced a hot flush and headache induced by relugolix, a traditional Japanese Kampo, kamishoyosan, was added to improve the side effects of relugolix. The patient was asymptomatic at the time of this report and experienced a significant shrinkage in uterine volume. Ultimately, she avoided hysterectomy as desired.

CONCLUSIONS

To our knowledge, this is the first report of co-occurring adenomyosis and leiomyoma, which was effectively treated with relugolix. Although the management of adverse side effects, including hot flush and headache by relugolix, has recently attracted attention and controversy, relugolix add-on therapy with kamishoyosan may help treat menopausal symptoms.

Controlling unconventional superconductivity in artificially engineeredf-electron Kondo superlattices

Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials, including high-T_ccuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. Interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures provide a new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated subject. We have been able to use a recent state-of-the-art molecular-beam-epitaxy technique to fabricate superlattices consisting of different heavy-fermion compounds with atomic thickness. These Kondo superlattices provide a unique opportunity to study the mutual interaction between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic order through the atomic interface. Here, we design and fabricate hybrid Kondo superlattices consisting of alternating layers of superconducting CeCoIn₅withd-wave pairing symmetry and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn₅or antiferromagnetic heavy fermion metals such as CeRhIn₅and CeIn₃. In these Kondo superlattices, superconducting heavy electrons are confined within the two-dimensional CeCoIn₅block layers and interact with neighboring nonmagnetic or magnetic layers through the interface. Superconductivity is strongly influenced by local inversion symmetry breaking at the interface in CeCoIn₅/YbCoIn₅superlattices. The superconducting and antiferromagnetic states coexist in spatially separated layers in CeCoIn₅/CeRhIn₅and CeCoIn₅/CeIn₃superlattices, but their mutual coupling via the interface significantly modifies the superconducting and magnetic properties. The fabrication of a wide variety of hybrid superlattices paves a new way to study the relationship between unconventional superconductivity and magnetism in strongly correlated materials.

Tuning the Pairing Interaction in a d-Wave Superconductor by Paramagnons Injected through Interfaces

Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials. A new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated issue focuses on the role of interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures. Here we fabricate hybrid superlattices consisting of alternating atomic layers of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_{5} and antiferromagnetic (AFM) metal CeRhIn_{5}, in which the AFM order can be suppressed by applying pressure. We find that the superconducting and AFM states coexist in spatially separated layers, but their mutual coupling via the interface significantly modifies the superconducting properties. An analysis of upper critical fields reveals that, upon suppressing the AFM order by applied pressure, the force binding superconducting electron pairs acquires an extreme strong-coupling nature. This demonstrates that superconducting pairing can be tuned nontrivially by magnetic fluctuations (paramagnons) injected through the interface.

The efficacy and safety of nivolumab in advanced non-small cell lung cancer in clinical practice in Japan: A multicenter analysis

Background: Nivolumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor, is now approved as standard treatment for pre-treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) based on the results from mega clinical trials with carefully selected patients. We sought to clarify the real-world efficacy and safety of nivolumab and to identify the clinical factors influencing the efficacy. Methods: This study enrolled 142 patients with pre-treated advanced NSCLC who had been administered nivolumab (3mg/kg, Q2W) from January to July 2016 at Keio University and affiliated hospitals in Japan. We retrospectively evaluated objective responses, adverse events (AEs), and analysed clinical factors associated with the response. Results: The overall response rate and disease control rate were 17% and 62%, respectively. The rate of any grade AEs was 45%, while the rate of grade 3-4 AEs was 13%. Among patient’s clinical factors such as age, gender, ECOG performance status, types of carcinoma, epidermal growth factor receptor ( EGFR)/ anaplastic lymphoma receptor tyrosine kinase (ALK) mutation status, smoking status, number of previous treatment lines, presence of central nervous system (CNS) metastasis and presence of prior radiotherapy, “ EGFR/ALK mutation negative” and “administration of prior radiotherapy” were independently associated with the good response to nivolumab treatment by multivariate logistic regression analysis (OR NA/ p < 0.01, OR 5.4/ p < 0.01, respectively). None of the 19 EGFR/ALK mutation positive patients showed response. Although a significant difference was not recognized between “current, former smokers” and “never smokers” (chi-square test, p = 0.1), a subsequent analysis showed smoking pack years (PY) was significantly higher in responders than in non-responders ( t-test, p = 0.035). Conclusions: The objective responses and the profiles of AEs confirmed in our study were similar to those observed in Checkmate 057/017 trials. We can use nivolumab safely regardless of age or number of treatment lines. EGFR/ALK mutation and presence of prior radiotherapy were key clinical factors statistically associated with the nivolumab efficacy.

Small cell lung cancer transformation during immunotherapy with nivolumab: A case report

We report a rare case of transformation of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to small cell lung cancer (SCLC), without epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutation, during immunotherapy treatment with nivolumab. A 75-year-old man was referred to our hospital following the observation of a 64 mm mass in a chest computed tomography (CT) scan. A transbronchial biopsy of the mass identified the pathological presence of poorly differentiated NSCLC, with no histological signs of SCLC. No mutations were identified in the EGFR gene. A clinical diagnosis of NSCLC (cT3N3M1a, stage IV) was made following a positron emission tomography (PET)-CT scan and enhanced brain magnetic resonance imaging. Docetaxel and bevacizumab were selected as the first-line chemotherapy regimen; however, after two cycles, the patient developed a gastrointestinal perforation, and discontinuation of cytotoxic chemotherapy was recommended. Owing to gradual disease progression, immunotherapy with nivolumab was selected as the second-line regimen. During the immunotherapy, the tumor continued to progress and some subcutaneous tumors emerged. Biopsy of a subcutaneous tumor revealed SCLC, with positive immunostaining for cluster of differentiation 56, synaptophysin, and thyroid transcription factor-1. Serum tumor markers of SCLC were also elevated. Based on these results, we concluded that in this case NSCLC had transformed to SCLC during immunotherapy with nivolumab.

Giant mature teratoma in the mediastinum presenting with rapid growth

Teratomas are primary germ-cell tumours in the mediastinum. Although they are generally slow-growing and asymptomatic, rapid growth causing life-threatening complications can occur. Sebaceous secretion, insulin production, chorionic gonadotropin secretion and pancreatic enzyme secretion are the presumptive causes of tumour progression. Only few cases of rapidly growing teratomas have been reported previously. Here, we present a case of a giant mature teratoma in the mediastinum that presented with rapid growth and compare the characteristics of this case with those of previous cases.

Invasive cervical cancer accompanied by IgG4-related disease

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic disease that affects multiple organs and generates nodules or thickening. Discriminating these diseases from malignancy is important because glucocorticoid treatment is effective for patients with IgG4-RD. Coexistence of IgG4-RD with various malignant diseases has been reported, but there are few reports with regard to gynecologic malignant diseases. We encountered a case of invasive cervical cancer stage IIB accompanied by IgG4-RD. The patient was a 46-year-old woman. On pelvic magnetic resonance imaging, fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography and computed tomography, systemic multiple lymph node swelling was seen, including in the neck and the mediastinum in addition to uterine cervix. Diagnosis (and hence, appropriate treatment choice) was achieved on pathology of the submandibular gland and uterus, and analysis of serum IgG4. IgG4-RD should be suspected in patients presenting with malignancy and unusual multiple lymph node swelling.

Tuning the Magnetic Quantum Criticality of Artificial Kondo Superlattices CeRhIn_{5}/YbRhIn_{5}

The effects of reduced dimensions and the interfaces on antiferromagnetic quantum criticality are studied in epitaxial Kondo superlattices, with alternating n layers of heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn_{5} and seven layers of normal metal YbRhIn_{5}. As n is reduced, the Kondo coherence temperature is suppressed due to the reduction of effective Kondo screening. The Néel temperature is gradually suppressed as n decreases and the quasiparticle mass is strongly enhanced, implying dimensional control toward a quantum critical point. Magnetotransport measurements reveal that a quantum critical point is reached for the n=3 superlattice by applying small magnetic fields. Remarkably, the anisotropy of the quantum critical field is opposite to the expectations from the magnetic susceptibility in bulk CeRhIn_{5}, suggesting that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking at the interface plays a key role for tuning the quantum criticality in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice.

[The Combination Therapy of Gemcitabine Plus Paclitaxel Induced Complete Response in a Tongue Skin Brain Metastasis of Bladder Carcinoma: A Case Report]

Tongue, skin and brain metastases of bladder cancer are very rare and few cases have been reported. We report a case of tongue, skin and brain metastases of bladder cancer. A 61-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with gross hematuria. Transurethral resection of the bladder (TURBT), tongue biopsy and skin biopsy were performed. Pathological findings showed urothelial carcinoma, G2, micro papillary variant, pT2＞ and tongue and skin metastases from urothelial carcinoma of bladder. After three cycles of chemotherapy (gemcitabine plus paclitaxel), tongue and skin metastases disappeared. Cystoscopy revealed no tumor of bladder. Eleven months later, she was admitted to our hospital because of disturbance of consciousness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple brain metastases. Rechallenge of chemotherapy (gemcitabine plus paclitaxel) restored from disturbance of consciousness and MRI showed partial response of brain metastases. We performed six additional courses of chemotherapy. Skin, tongue and brain metastases from bladder cancer indicate poor risk. Chemotherapy (gemcitabine plus paclitaxel)could be effective against these matastases.

Anisotropy of the superconducting gap in the iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As(1-x)P(x))2

We report peculiar momentum-dependent anisotropy in the superconducting gap observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in BaFe₂(As_1-xP_x)₂ (x = 0.30, T_c = 30 K). Strongly anisotropic gap has been found only in the electron Fermi surface while the gap on the entire hole Fermi surfaces are nearly isotropic. These results are inconsistent with horizontal nodes but are consistent with modified s_± gap with nodal loops. We have shown that the complicated gap modulation can be theoretically reproduced by considering both spin and orbital fluctuations.

Controllable Rashba spin-orbit interaction in artificially engineered superlattices involving the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of alternating blocks between the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5, which exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn5. The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn5 block layers breaks the inversion symmetry centered at the superconducting block of CeCoIn5. This configuration leads to dramatic changes in the temperature and angular dependence of the upper critical field, which can be understood by considering the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking and the associated weakening of the Pauli pair-breaking effect. Since the degree of thickness modulation is a design feature of this type of superlattices, the Rashba interaction and the nature of pair breaking are largely tunable in these modulated superlattices with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Observation of orbital resonance Hall effect in (TMTSF)2ClO4

We report the observation of a Hall effect driven by orbital resonance in the quasi-1-dimensional (q1D) organic conductor (TMTSF)2ClO4. Although a conventional Hall effect is not expected in this class of materials due to their reduced dimensionality, we observed a prominent Hall response at certain orientations of the magnetic field B corresponding to lattice vectors of the constituent molecular chains, known as the magic angles (MAs). We show that this Hall effect can be understood as the response of conducting planes generated by an effective locking of the orbital motion of the charge carriers to the MA driven by an electron-trajectory resonance. This phenomenon supports a class of theories describing the rich behavior of MA phenomena in q1D materials based on altered dimensionality. Furthermore, we observed that the effective carrier density of the conducting planes is exponentially suppressed in large B, which indicates possible density wave formation.

[Case of advanced colon cancer after colostomy closure]

We report a case of advanced colon cancer after closure of a colostomy. A 77-year-old man suddenly began experiencing abdominal pain and pan-peritonitis due to perforate diverticulum of the sigmoid colon. A Hartmann operation was urgently performed, and closure of the colostomy was performed 6 months later. The patient had no history of colonoscopy. Colonoscopy was performed 45 months after the closure of the colostomy to examine the colon. Advanced colon cancer was detected near the anastomotic region. In conclusion, older patients, including those with numerous disease complications such as diabetes and hypertension, should undergo early colonoscopy as a preventative measure.

Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition in a charge ordered state of the layered organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

The current-voltage characteristics in the charge order state of the two-dimensional organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)(2)I(3) exhibit power law behavior at low temperatures. The power law is understood in terms of the electric-field-dependent potential between electrons and holes, which are thermally excited from the charge order state. The power law exponent steeply changes from 1 to 3 in the range from 30 to 45 K with decreasing temperature, thereby suggesting the occurrence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition; many (few) unbound electron-hole pairs are thermally excited above (below) the transition. The effects of the finite size and interlayer coupling on the power law behavior are discussed.

Novel Pauli-paramagnetic quantum phase in a Mott insulator

In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion localizes electrons. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a quantum spin liquid state in the organic Mott insulator EtMe(3)Sb[Pd(dmit)(2)](2) (where Et is C(2)H(5)-, Me is CH(3)-, and dmit is 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) with two-dimensional triangular lattice has Pauli-paramagnetic-like low-energy excitations, which are a hallmark of itinerant fermions. Our torque magnetometry down to low temperatures (30 mK) up to high fields (32 T) reveals distinct residual paramagnetic susceptibility comparable to that in a half-filled two-dimensional metal, demonstrating the magnetically gapless nature of the ground state. Moreover, our results are robust against deuteration, pointing toward the emergence of an extended 'quantum critical phase', in which low-energy spin excitations behave as in paramagnetic metals with Fermi surface, despite the frozen charge degree of freedom.

Anomalous upper critical field in CeCoIn5/YbCoIn5 superlattices with a Rashba-type heavy Fermion interface

We report a highly unusual angular variation of the upper critical field (H(c2)) in epitaxial superlattices CeCoIn(5)(n)/YbCoIn(5)(5), formed by alternating layers of n and a 5 unit-cell thick heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn(5) with a strong Pauli effect and normal metal YbCoIn(5), respectively. For the n=3 superlattice, H(c2)(θ) changes smoothly as a function of the field angle θ. However, close to the superconducting transition temperature, H(c2)(θ) exhibits a cusp near the parallel field (θ=0°). This cusp behavior disappears for n=4 and 5 superlattices. This sudden disappearance suggests the relative dominance of the orbital depairing effect in the n=3 superlattice, which may be due to the suppression of the Pauli effect in a system with local inversion symmetry breaking. Taking into account the temperature dependence of H(c2)(θ) as well, our results suggest that some exotic superconducting states, including a helical superconducting state, might be realized at high magnetic fields.

A sharp peak of the zero-temperature penetration depth at optimal composition in BaFe2(As(1-x)P(x))2

In a superconductor, the ratio of the carrier density, n, to its effective mass, m*, is a fundamental property directly reflecting the length scale of the superfluid flow, the London penetration depth, λ(L). In two-dimensional systems, this ratio n/m* (~1/λ(L)(2)) determines the effective Fermi temperature, T(F). We report a sharp peak in the x-dependence of λ(L) at zero temperature in clean samples of BaFe(2)(As(1)(-x)P(x))(2) at the optimum composition x = 0.30, where the superconducting transition temperature T(c) reaches a maximum of 30 kelvin. This structure may arise from quantum fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. The ratio of T(c)/T(F) at x = 0.30 is enhanced, implying a possible crossover toward the Bose-Einstein condensate limit driven by quantum criticality.

Infrared measurement of the pseudogap of P-doped and Co-doped high-temperature BaFe2As2 superconductors

We report on infrared studies of charge dynamics in a prototypical pnictide system: the BaFe2As2 family. Our experiments have identified hallmarks of the pseudogap state in the BaFe2As2 system that mirror the spectroscopic manifestations of the pseudogap in the cuprates. The magnitude of the infrared pseudogap is in accord with that of the spin-density-wave gap of the parent compound. By monitoring the superconducting gap of both P- and Co-doped compounds, we find that the infrared pseudogap is unrelated to superconductivity. The appearance of the pseudogap is found to correlate with the evolution of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations associated with the spin-density-wave instability. The strong-coupling analysis of infrared data further reveals the interdependence between the magnetism and the pseudogap in the iron pnictides.

Anatomical evaluation of facial nerve pathways and dissection of "premasseter space" for rhytidectomy in Asians

BACKGROUND

Partial detachment of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) by dissection of the premasseter space (PMS) is an option for enhancing the effectiveness of SMAS-based rhytidectomy. The aim of this study was to identify the underlying cause of the potential risk of motor nerve impairment sometimes caused by PMS dissection and to consider the effective use of PMS dissection, especially in Asians.

METHODS

Detailed dissection was carried out on six fixed Japanese cadavers to evaluate facial nerve pathways around the PMS.

RESULTS

The anterior wall of the PMS was opaque because each face exhibited fibers of various thicknesses within and around the anterior border of the masseter. The ascending ramifications of the buccal trunk ran through the fibers, outside the anterior border of the masseter in some faces but within it in others.

CONCLUSIONS

This study revealed the presence of a danger zone when dissecting the PMS in Asians. Severing the fibers that fix the SMAS to the masseter fascia around the anterior border of the masseter is sometimes unavoidable to attain good mobility of the SMAS. Surgeons must be mindful of the fibers near the anterior border of the masseter because they may be outside the PMS and contain buccal trunk ramifications; the anterior wall of the PMS tends to be opaque in Asians. Nonetheless, the extent of PMS dissection should be determined on an individual basis. The present findings may help to reduce relevant risks in Asian patients and standardize procedures for effective rhytidectomy.

de Haas-van Alphen study of the Fermi surfaces of superconducting LiFeP and LiFeAs

We report a de Haas-van Alphen oscillation study of the 111 iron pnictide superconductors LiFeAs with T(c) ≈ 18 K and LiFeP with T(c) ≈ 5 K. We find that for both compounds the Fermi surface topology is in good agreement with density functional band-structure calculations and has almost nested electron and hole bands. The effective masses generally show significant enhancement, up to ~3 for LiFeP and ~5 for LiFeAs. However, one hole Fermi surface in LiFeP shows a very small enhancement, as compared with its other sheets. This difference probably results from k-dependent coupling to spin fluctuations and may be the origin of the different nodal and nodeless superconducting gap structures in LiFeP and LiFeAs, respectively.

Nodal versus nodeless behaviors of the order parameters of LiFeP and LiFeAs superconductors from magnetic penetration-depth measurements

High-precision measurements of magnetic penetration depth λ in clean single crystals of LiFeAs and LiFeP superconductors reveal contrasting behaviors. In LiFeAs the low-temperature λ(T) shows a flat dependence indicative of a fully gapped state, which is consistent with previous studies. In contrast, LiFeP exhibits a T-linear dependence of superfluid density infinity λ(-2), indicating a nodal superconducting order parameter. A systematic comparison of quasiparticle excitations in the 1111, 122, and 111 families of iron-pnictide superconductors implies that the nodal state is induced when the pnictogen height from the iron plane decreases below a threshold value of ~1.33 Å.

Comparison of chemotherapeutic treatment outcomes of advanced extrapulmonary neuroendocrine carcinomas and advanced small-cell lung carcinoma

BACKGROUND

The chemotherapy for small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) has been adopted for advanced extrapulmonary neuroendocrine carcinomas (EP-NECs). The aim of this study was to clarify the efficacy of standard SCLC regimens when used to treat EP-NECs and to compare the outcome with that for SCLC.

METHODS

We reviewed the medical records of 136 patients (41 with EP-NEC and 95 with SCLC) who were treated using a platinum-containing regimen for advanced disease between January 2000 and October 2008 at our hospital.

RESULTS

The primary site of the EP-NEC was the gastrointestinal tract in 18 patients (GI tract group); the liver, biliary tract or pancreas in 16 patients (HBP group), and other sites in 7 patients ('others' group). The response rate in the SCLC patients was 77.8%, and the response rate in the EP-NEC patients was 30.8% (37.5% in the GI tract group, 12.5% in the HBP group, and 57.1% in the 'others' group). The median survival time for the SCLC patients was 13.6 months, while that for the EP-NEC patients was 9.2 months (14.9 months in the GI tract group, 7.8 months in the HBP group, and 8.9 months in the 'others' group). A multivariate analysis demonstrated that a poor performance status, liver involvement, and the treatment regimen were independent unfavorable prognostic factors.

CONCLUSION

The response rate and prognosis of the patients with advanced EP-NECs were worse than those of the patients with SCLC in this study. The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, liver involvement, and treatment regimen had a larger impact on the prognosis than the primary tumor site, as demonstrated by multivariate analysis.

Photofragmentation of the K-shell excited perfluorocyclobutane: anisotropies in the fragments and breakdown pathways

Total ion yield spectrum of perfluorocyclobutane (c-C(4)F(8)) has been measured in the C and F K-shell excitation regions. The peak assignments are presented based on angle-resolved photofragment ion mass spectrometry. The peaks at 291.34 and 688.5 eV are found to come from the transitions from the C 1s and the F 1s to the lowest unoccupied b(2)σ(CF)* orbital, respectively. A photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence spectrum is acquired at 700.1 eV for clarifying the breakdown pathways of c-C(4)F(8)(2+). Two series of the pathways are identified; fission of F atom(s) followed by charge separation and elimination of CF(2) or CF(3) followed by charge separation.

Specific heat discontinuity, ΔC, at Tc in BaFe2(As0.7P0.3)2-consistent with unconventional superconductivity

We report the specific heat discontinuity, ΔC/T(c), at T(c) = 28.2 K of a collage of single crystals of BaFe(2)(As(0.7)P(0.3))(2) and compare the measured value of 38.5 mJ mol(-1) K(-2) with other iron pnictide and iron chalcogenide (FePn/Ch) superconductors. This value agrees well with the trend established by Bud'ko, Ni and Canfield, who found that ΔC/T(c) is proportional to aT(c)(2) for 14 examples of doped Ba(1 - x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) and BaFe(2 - x)TM(x)As(2), where the transition metal TM = Co and Ni. We extend their analysis to include all the FePn/Ch superconductors for which ΔC/T(c) is currently known and find ΔC/T(c) is proportional to aT(c)(1.9) and a = 0.083 mJ mol(-1) K(-4). A comparison with the elemental superconductors with T(c) > 1 K and with A-15 superconductors shows that, contrary to the FePn/Ch superconductors, electron-phonon-coupled conventional superconductors exhibit a significantly different dependence of ΔC on T(c), namely ΔC/T(c) is proportional to aT(c)(1.9). However ΔC/γT(c) appears to be comparable in all three classes (FePn/Ch, elemental and A-15) of superconductors with, for example, ΔC/γT(c) = 2.4 for BaFe(2)(As(0.7)P(0.3))(2). A discussion of the possible implications of these phenomenological comparisons for the unconventional superconductivity believed to exist in the FePn/Ch is given.

Two-dimensional and three-dimensional Fermi surfaces of superconducting BaFe2(As(1-x)P(x))2 and their nesting properties revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have studied the three-dimensional shapes of the Fermi surfaces (FSs) of BaFe(2)(As(1-x)P(x))(2) (x=0.38), where superconductivity is induced by isovalent P substitution and by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Moderately strong electron mass enhancement has been identified for both the electron and hole FSs. Among two observed hole FSs, the nearly two-dimensional one shows good nesting with the outer two-dimensional electron FS, but its orbital character is different from the outer electron FS. The three-dimensional hole FS shows poor nesting with the electron FSs. The present results suggest that the three dimensionality and the difference in the orbital character weaken FS nesting while partial nesting among the outer electron FSs of d(xy) character and/or that within the three-dimensional hole FS becomes dominant, which may lead to the nodal superconductivity.

Extrapulmonary neuroendocrine tumors: An institutional experience of 337 patients at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Japan

Background: Extrapulmonary neuroendocrine tumors (EPNET) are a rare and heterogeneous disease entity, and little information regarding these tumors is available. The aim of the present study was to clarify the clinical behavior, treatment strategy, and outcome of EPNET arising from various primary sites.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 337 patients with pathologically confirmed NET arising from extrapulmonary site between January 2000 and December 2008 at the National Cancer Center Hospital of Japan.

Results: The major primary tumor site was the rectum followed by the pancreas and stomach. Among the gastrointestinal tract tumors, 113 patients had NET from the foregut, 92 patients from the hindgut, and only 4 patients from the midgut. The median patient age was 60 years, and 57% of the patients were male. The histologic grade was as follows: 39% were well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (WDNET); 20% were well-differentiated neuroendcrine carcinomas (WDNEC); 33% were poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (PDNEC); and 8% were mixed exocrine-endocrine tumors (Mixed). Most NETs from the rectum or duodenum are WDNET, whereas the ratio of PDNEC was high among NET from the genital organs or esophagus. The treatment strategy was associated with the clinical stage or the primary organ; in particular, 94% of the localized rectal NET were resected endoscopically. The 2-year survival rate for all the patients were 70%. A multivariate analysis demonstrated that distant disease of clinical stage and PDNEC of histological grade had a stronger impact on a poor outcome than the primary tumor site. The 2-year survival rate among the patients with WDNET, WDNEC and PDNEC were 97%, 80% and 36%, respectively, and 94%, 72%, and 32% of the patients had localized, regional, and distant disease, respectively.

Conclusions: Japanese patients with EPNET have different clinicopathological features such as the primary organ or treatment procedure compared with previous reports in Western countries. Identifying the precise clinical stage and histological grade of patients with NET is essential because these factors influence the patient outcome.

Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces and coherent interlayer transport in KFe₂As₂

We report the results of the angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMROs), which can determine the shape of bulk Fermi surfaces (FSs) in quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) systems, in a highly hole-doped Fe-based superconductor KFe2As2 with Tc ≈ 3.7  K. From the AMROs, we determined the two Q2D FSs with rounded-square cross sections, correspond to 12% and 17% of the first Brillouin zone. The rounded-squared shape of the FS cross section is also confirmed by the analyses of the interlayer transport under in-plane fields. From the obtained FS shape, we infer the character of the 3d orbitals that contribute to the FSs.

Unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic quantum critical behavior in the isovalent-doped BaFe2(As1-xPx)2

Spin dynamics evolution of BaFe2(As(1-x)Px){2} was probed as a function of P concentration via 31P NMR. Our NMR study reveals that two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AF) fluctuations are notably enhanced with little change in static susceptibility on approaching the AF phase from the superconducting dome. Moreover, the magnetically ordered temperature θ deduced from the relaxation rate vanishes at optimal doping. These results provide clear-cut evidence for a quantum-critical point, suggesting that the AF fluctuations associated with the quantum-critical point play a central role in the high-T(c) superconductivity.

[A case of acute subdural hematoma from dissection of cortico-dural anastomosis]

A case of acute subdural hematoma caused by rupture of a bridging artery between the dura and the cortical surface is reported. A 49-year-old man complained of headache in the left temporal area after he had lifted up a heavy load. His symptom did not improve in spite of taking analgesics, so he was transferred to our hospital. Brain CT disclosed left acute subdural hematoma. Soon after admission, he became comatose and developed right hemiplegia. The cerebral angiogram displayed a tapering occlusion of a branch of the left middle cerebral artery. Emergent decompressive craniectomy was performed, and the anastomotic artery between the dura mater and the cortical artery was followed until it appeared normal in the cortical sulcus. Proximal occlusion of the artery was carried out. Pathological examination demonstrated the dissection of the anastomotic artery. This is the first reported and pathologically-proven case of acute subdural hematoma caused by dissection of the anastomotic artery between the dura mater and the cortical artery.

Evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe2(As1-xPx){2} on entering the superconducting dome

Using the de Haas-van Alphen effect we have measured the evolution of the Fermi surface of BaFe2(As1-xPx){2} as a function of isoelectric substitution (As/P) for 0.41<x<1 (T{c} up to 25 K). We find that the volumes of electron and hole Fermi surfaces shrink linearly with decreasing x. This shrinking is accompanied by a strong increase in the quasiparticle effective mass as x is tuned toward the maximum T{c}. These results are not explained by simple band structure calculations, and it is likely that these trends originate from the same many-body interactions which give rise to superconductivity.
