Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the dosimetry between convex triangular fields of view (FOV) and similar dimension cylindrical FOVs of two cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) models. METHODS Optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters (OSLDs) were placed in fiducial anatomical locations in an anthropomorphic phantom representing an adult head male for dosimetry scans. Convex triangular FOVs (100 × 80 mm/maxilla-mandible; 100 × 50 mm mandible; 100 × 50 mm/maxilla) from Veraviewepocs 3D R100 (J. Morita, Kyoto, Japan) (R100) and Veraview® X800 (J. Morita, Kyoto, Japan) (X800) and cylindrical FOVs from R100 and X800 (80 × 80 mm/maxilla-mandible; 80 × 50 mm/mandible; 80 × 50 mm/maxilla) were obtained, resulting in 12 different scan protocols. Equivalent doses for each relevant organ/tissue and the effective dose for each protocol were calculated. Mean effective doses were compared by the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's post hoc test to evaluate the effect of the FOV and device (α = 0.05). RESULTS The effective doses ranged between 69 and 324 μSv for the convex triangular FOVs and 76 and 332 μSv for the cylindrical FOVs. Convex triangular FOVs from the R100 device had effective doses 2.3 to 15.3% lower than their corresponding cylindrical FOVs with similar height (p < 0.05), and that difference ranged between 8.8 and 11.8% for the X800 device (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Convex triangular fields of view delivered slightly lower effective doses than the cylindrical fields of view of similar dimensions in the R100 and X800 CBCT devices. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Understanding the influence of the image geometry formation in effective dose allows optimization to reduce patient dose.

Abstract
The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the success rates and prosthetic complications of implants with a modified sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surface inserted for posterior single-implant crown restorations. Final crowns were placed 3 to 4 weeks after surgery, and patient follow-up spanned 10 years in a private practice setting. A total of 22 patients (8 women, 14 men) with 25 posterior implants placed (16 mandible, 9 maxilla) were selected, including only implants for posterior single-implant crowns with insertion torque values of ≥ 35 Ncm at placement. Twenty-one implants passed the reverse torque test at 3 to 4 weeks after implant placement, and final restorations were placed. Three patients (4 implants) had "spinners," and there was one patient dropout after completion of the final restoration. All patients were recalled for clinical exams, digital periapical radiographs, and clinical photos at short-term (≤ 5 years) and long-term (> 5 years) follow-up appointments. The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs was also determined at the initial and follow-up visits. Crestal bone level was measured at crown placement (T1), short-term follow-up (T2; mean: 29.4 months), and long-term follow-up appointments (T3; mean: 114.4 months). Twenty patients (23 implants) returned for examination at T2, and 15 (18 implants) were available at T3. For the 17 implants available at all evaluations, statistically significant bone loss was found from T1 to T2 (0.23 ± 0.30 mm), and the mean crestal bone level appeared stable from T2 to T3. Based on clinical and radiographic findings, the success rate for the implants and restorations at T2 and T3 was graded as 100%. Therefore, it can be stated that an early loading protocol of 3 to 4 weeks using a modified SLA surface at premolar/molar single-tooth locations can result in favorable clinical and radiographic long-term results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the frequency and reasons for retaking cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans in an oral and maxillofacial radiology imaging clinic in a dental institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort chart audit of the patient image database was performed for 1737 patients attending the Diagnostic Imaging clinic at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital from February 2016 to May 2019, and the rate of, and reasons for, CBCT image re-exposure was tallied. Patient demographics (age and gender) and CBCT acquisition parameters (CBCT unit, field-of-view (FOV), scanned region of interest, and exposure time) were recorded and correlated to retake analysis. RESULTS The retake rate was 4.6% (80/1737). The most common reasons for re-exposure were incomplete FOV coverage (57.5%) and motion artifacts (27.5%). Patients under 12 years of age had a significantly higher risk for motion artifacts. CBCT for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) had a significantly higher risk for incomplete FOV coverage. CONCLUSIONS Children (less than 12 years of age) demonstrate a higher frequency of retakes, principally due to motion artifacts. TMJ CBCT examinations have a higher frequency of retakes due to an incomplete FOV coverage. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Information regarding the frequency and reasons for CBCT retakes is beneficial to identify procedures, practices, or patients susceptible to additional radiation exposure and implement appropriate and specific quality control protocols.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review was to identify, review, analyze, and summarize available evidence on the accuracy of linear measurements when using maxillofacial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) specifically in the field of implant dentistry. MATERIAL AND METHODS The search was undertaken in April 2017 in the National Library of Medicine database (Medline) through its online site (PubMed), followed by searches in the Cochrane, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest Dissertation and Thesis databases. The main inclusion criterion for studies was that linear CBCT measurements were performed for quantitative assessment (e.g., height, width) of the alveolar bone at edentulous sites or measuring distances from anatomical structures related to implant dentistry. The studies should compare these values to clinical data (humans) or ex vivo and/or experimental (animal) findings from a "gold standard." RESULTS The initial search yielded 2,516 titles. In total, 22 studies were included in the final analysis. Of those, two were clinical and 20 ex vivo investigations. The major findings of the review indicate that CBCT provides cross-sectional images that demonstrate high accuracy and reliability for bony linear measurements on cross-sectional images related to implant treatment. A wide range of error has been reported when performing linear measurements on CBCT images, with both over- and underestimation of dimensions in comparison with a gold standard. A voxel size of 0.3 to 0.4 mm is adequate to provide CBCT images of acceptable diagnostic quality for implant treatment planning. CONCLUSIONS CBCT can be considered as an appropriate diagnostic tool for 3D preoperative planning. Nevertheless, a 2 mm safety margin to adjacent anatomic structures should be considered when using CBCT. In clinical practice, the measurement accuracy and reliability of linear measurements on CBCT images are most likely reduced through factors such as patient motion, metallic artefacts, device-specific exposure parameters, the software used, and manual vs. automated procedures.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We aimed to investigate the incidence and severity of orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) on maxillary incisors with clear aligner therapy using cone-beam computed tomography and to identify possible risk factors. METHODS The root lengths of maxillary incisors were measured on orthogonal images from pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography examinations of 160 patients who received comprehensive orthodontic treatment with clear aligners. RESULTS Mean absolute reductions in root length varied between 0.47 ± 0.61 mm and 0.55 ± 0.70 mm and were not significantly different between maxillary central and lateral incisors. The prevalence of severe OIIRR, defined as both maxillary central incisors experiencing greater than a 25% reduction in root length, was found to be 1.25%. Potential risk factors included sex, malocclusion, crowding, and posttreatment approximation of apices to the cortical plates. Race, interproximal reduction, previous trauma to the teeth, elastics, age, treatment duration, and pretreatment approximation of apices to the cortical plates did not significantly affect the amount of OIIRR. CONCLUSIONS Comprehensive treatment with clear aligners resulted in minimal root resorption. Sex, malocclusion, crowding, and posttreatment approximation to the cortical plates significantly affected the percentage of change in root length. Posttreatment approximation of root apices to the palatal cortical plate showed the strongest association for increased OIIRR.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the effectiveness of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images obtained with different kilovoltage settings compared with intraoral periapical photostimulable storage phosphor (PSP) plate images in the detection of chemically created peri-implant defects utilizing a bovine rib bone model in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS After placing 80 implants in bovine ribs, peri-implant circumferential bone defects of different sizes were created with 70% perchloric acid. CBCT images (3D Accuitomo 170) were acquired at 90 and 75 kVp, and intraoral periapical images were acquired using a PSP system (Carestream KODAK, CS 7600). Using a 5-point Likert scale, two oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMR) and two oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS) evaluated the likelihood of a bone defect being absent or present. The kappa statistic was used to compare observer agreement, and area under the curve values were compared using analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test. Significance was set at P ≤ .05. RESULTS PSP reliability ranged from discordance to slight for small defects and fair to moderate for larger defects. For CBCT, OMRs had good agreement for defects using 90 kVp, and slight to fair using 75 kVp. Agreement for OMS observations was fair for 75 kVp, and varied from slight to good for 90 kVp. Small lesions were detected more effectively by CBCT than by PSP, and larger lesions were detected more effectively by CBCT at 90 kVp than by CBCT at 75 kVp or by PSP. CONCLUSION CBCT imaging at 90 kVp was associated with a significantly higher rate of detection of both small and large chemically simulated bone defects than PSP or CBCT at 75 kVp. CBCT imaging at 75 kVp proved better than PSP for the detection of small defects.

Abstract
Numerous benign cysts or solid tumors may present in the jaws. These arise from tooth-forming tissues in the dental alveolus or from nonodontogenic tissues in the basal bone of the mandible and maxilla. Radiologists provide 2 deliverables to assist in diagnosis and management: (1) appropriately formatted images demonstrating the location and extent of the lesion and (2) interpretive reports highlighting specific radiologic findings and an impression providing a radiologic differential diagnosis. This article provides guidance on essential image protocols for planning treatments, a radiologic differential diagnostic algorithm based on location and pattern recognition, and a summary of the main features of benign odontogenic lesions.

Abstract
Over the last 15 years, cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging has emerged as an important supplemental radiographic technique for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, especially in situations which require an understanding of the complex anatomic relationships and surrounding structures of the maxillofacial skeleton. CBCT imaging provides unique features and advantages to enhance orthodontic practice over conventional extraoral radiographic imaging. While it is the responsibility of each practitioner to make a decision, in tandem with the patient/family, consensus-derived, evidence-based clinical guidelines are available to assist the clinician in the decision-making process. Specific recommendations provide selection guidance based on variables such as phase of treatment, clinically-assessed treatment difficulty, the presence of dental and/or skeletal modifying conditions, and pathology. CBCT imaging in orthodontics should always be considered wisely as children have conservatively, on average, a three to five times greater radiation risk compared with adults for the same exposure. The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of the operation of CBCT equipment as it relates to image quality and dose, highlight the benefits of the technique in orthodontic practice, and provide guidance on appropriate clinical use with respect to radiation dose and relative risk, particularly for the paediatric patient.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION With increasing use of digital scanning with restorative procedures in the dental office, it becomes necessary that educational institutions adopt instructional methodology for introducing this technology together with conventional impression techniques. OBJECTIVE To compare the time differences between instructing dental students on digital scanning (DS) (LAVA C.O.S. digital impression system) and a conventional impression technique (CI) (polyvinyl siloxane), and to compare students' attitudes and beliefs towards both techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Volunteer sophomore dental students (n = 25) with no prior experience in clinical impressions were recruited and IRB consent obtained. Participants responded to a pre-and post-exposure questionnaire. Participants were instructed on the use of both DS and CI for a single tooth full coverage crown restoration using a consecutive sequence of video lecture, investigator-led demonstration and independent impression exercise. The time necessary for each step (minutes) was recorded. Statistical significance was calculated using dependent t-tests (time measurements) and 2-sample Mann-Whitney (questionnaire responses). RESULTS The time spent teaching students was greater for DS than CI for video lecture (15.95 and 10.07 min, P = 0.0000), demonstration time (9.06 and 4.70 min, P = 0.0000) and impression time (18.17 and 8.59 min, P = 0.0000). Prior to the instruction and practice, students considered themselves more familiar with CI (3.96) than DS (1.96) (P = 0.0000). After the instruction and practice, participants reported CI technique proved significantly easier than expected (pre-instruction: 3.52 and post-instruction: 4.08, P = 0.002). However, overall participants' perception of ease of use for DS was not influenced by this instruction and practice experience (pre-instruction: 3.84 and post-instruction: 3.56, P = 0.106). Despite the results, 96% of participants expressed an expectation that DS will become their predominant impression technique during their careers. CONCLUSIONS Dental students with no clinical experience have high expectations for digital scanning, and despite their initial difficulty, expect it to become their primary impression technique during their professional futures. The instructional time necessary for introducing DS into the curriculum is significantly greater than CI in both classroom (lecture) and clinical simulation settings (investigator-led demonstration).

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to determine the influence of field of view (FOV) and number of acquisition projection images (frames) on the detection of chemically simulated peri-implant defects by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an in vitro bovine rib bone model. METHODS Eighty implants were placed in bovine ribs in which small and large bone defects were created using 70% perchloric acid. CBCT images were acquired at three acquisition protocols: protocol 1 (FOV 4 × 4 cm, 0.08-mm voxel size, 1,009 frames [high fidelity]; protocol 2 (same as protocol 1 except 512 frames [standard]); and protocol 3 (FOV 14 × 5 cm, 0.25-mm voxel size; high fidelity). Two oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMRs) and two oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) rated the presence or absence of bone defects on a five-point scale. κ and area under the curve (AUC) were calculated and compared using analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey test at P ≤ 0.05. RESULTS Intra- and interobserver agreement for OMRs ranged from moderate to good and from slight to moderate for OMSs. For the detection of small lesions, protocol 1 (AUC 0.813 ± 0.045) provided higher detection rates than protocol 2 (AUC 0.703 ± 0.02) and protocol 3 (AUC 0.773 ± 0.55) [F(2,9) = 1.6377]. For larger defects, the trends were similar, with protocol 1 (AUC 0.852 ± 0.108) providing higher detection rates than protocol 2 (AUC 0.730 ± 0.045) and protocol 3 (AUC 0.783 ± 0.058) [F(2,9) = 1.9576]. CONCLUSION Within the limits of this study, optimal detection of chemically simulated pericircumferential implant crestal bone defects is achieved at the least radiation detriment using the smallest FOV, the highest number of acquisition frames, and the smallest voxel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the reliability and accuracy of cone beam CT (CBCT) images obtained at different fields of view in detecting and quantifying simulated buccal marginal alveolar peri-implant defects. METHODS Simulated buccal defects were prepared in 69 implants inserted into cadaver mandibles. CBCT images at three different fields of view were acquired: 40 × 40, 60 × 60 and 100 × 100 mm. The presence or absence of defects was assessed on three sets of images using a five-point scale by three observers. Observers also measured the depth, width and volume of defects on CBCT images, which were compared with physical measurements. The kappa value was calculated to assess intra- and interobserver agreement. Six-way repeated analysis of variance was used to evaluate treatment effects on the diagnosis. Pairwise comparisons of median true-positive and true-negative rates were calculated by the χ² test. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between measurements. Significance level was set as p < 0.05. RESULTS All observers had excellent intra-observer agreement. Defect status (p < 0.001) and defect size (p < 0.001) factors were statistically significant. Pairwise interactions were found between defect status and defect size (p = 0.001). No differences between median true-positive or true-negative values were found between CBCT field of views (p > 0.05). Significant correlations were found between physical and CBCT measurements (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS All CBCT images performed similarly for the detection of simulated buccal marginal alveolar peri-implant defects. Depth, width and volume measurements of the defects from various CBCT images correlated highly with physical measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect on diagnostic yield in the detection of experimentally induced vertical root fractures on cone beam CT images using four dental software program. METHODS 190 single-rooted extracted human teeth were divided into three groups according to the pulp canal status: unrestored (UR), filled with gutta-percha (GP) and restored with a metallic custom post (Post). One-half of the sample of each group was artificially fractured and the segments repositioned. All teeth were scanned on a cone beam CT device at 0.2 mm nominal voxel resolution (i-CAT Platinum; Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, PA). The data were exported as digital imaging and communications in medicine files and imported into Dolphin Imaging & Management Solutions, v. 11.5 (Patterson Dental Supply Inc., St Paul, MN), InVivoDental, v. 5.0 (Anatomage Inc., San Jose, CA) and Kodak Dental Imaging Software 3D module, v. 2.1.11 (Carestream Health Inc., Rochester, NY) software. Cross-sectional images in the acquisition (using Xoran CAT™, v. 3.0.34 software; Xoran Technologies, Ann Arbor, MI) and additional software were presented to three calibrated oral radiologists who rated the presence or absence of root fracture on a five-point scale. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed, and treatment comparisons compared by analysis of variance and pairwise comparisons were performed using Tukey's test at an a priori value of α < 0.05%. RESULTS All dental software performed equally at detecting fractures. Fractures were significantly more difficult to detect when posts were present. CONCLUSIONS The diagnosis of root fracture is software-independent. The presence of an intracanal metallic post significantly decreases the detection of artificially created root fractures.

Abstract
The calcification of cervical carotid artery atheroma (CCAA) represents maturation of a lumenal atherosclerotic plaque that has been associated with a high risk of cerebral stroke. The demonstration of CCAA on rotational panoramic images has received increasing attention in dentistry since it was first described in 1981. The purposes of this article are to provide a background to the mechanism of arterial calcification, to review the clinical diagnostic and management algorithms for dental practitioners when CCAA are identified radiologically, and to describe and illustrate current appropriate radiographic modalities and medical management strategies used to confirm and assess stenosis associated with CCAA.

Abstract
A Position Paper Subcommittee of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) reviewed the literature since the original position statement on selection criteria for radiology in dental implantology, published in 2000. All current planar modalities, including intraoral, panoramic, and cephalometric, as well as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) are discussed, along with radiation dosimetry and anatomy considerations. We provide research-based, consensus-derived clinical guidance for practitioners on the appropriate use of specific imaging modalities in dental implant treatment planning. Specifically, the AAOMR recommends that cross-sectional imaging be used for the assessment of all dental implant sites and that CBCT is the imaging method of choice for gaining this information. This document will be periodically revised to reflect new evidence.

Abstract
Maxillofacial cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is one of the most significant advances in dental imaging since rotational panoramic radiography. While the acquisition of CBCT data is technically simple, numerous parameters should be considered so that CBCT imaging is performed appropriately and 'task specific'. This involves an understanding of not only exposure (e.g. geometric and software parameters to minimize patient dose, while sustaining diagnostic image quality) but also image formatting options to maximize image display. CBCT images contain far more detailed information of the maxillofacial region than do panoramic or other 2-D images and necessitate a thorough knowledge of the 3-D anatomy of the region and considerations of variability in the range of the anatomically normal. These principles, procedures and protocols, together with the interpretation of CBCT images form the basis of best practices in maxillofacial CBCT imaging. This communication aims to provide: (1) an overview of the fundamental principles of operation of maxillofacial CBCT technology; (2) an understanding of 'task specific' equipment, image selection and image display modes; and (3) a systematic methodology for sequencing interpretation of CBCT images.

Abstract
Digital radiography has created a growing opportunity for computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) tools. The Logicon Caries Detector (LCD), with upgraded CAD software based on user feedback, was re-evaluated for its effectiveness via a retrospective clinical study. Using the upgraded LCD software, 12 dentists (evaluators) blindly assessed 17 radiographs taken by another (attending) dentist, who restored 28 proximal surfaces. The attending dentist confirmed the presence of early dentinal caries, as well as identifying 48 surfaces as caries-free or with enamel caries only subject to noninvasive treatment. The radiographs, imported into the software using a digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) reader, were visually assessed under typical operatory lighting conditions, then with the aid of the software's density analysis tool. The effectiveness of the evaluators was gauged by calculating two measures of performance, sensitivity and specificity, for the detection and classification of dentinal caries. Sensitivity among all evaluator dentists was 30% with the initial image; 34% with the brightness and contrast adjusted image; 39% when the image was sharpened; and 69% when the density analysis tool was utilized. Specificity was found to be 97% with the initial image; 95% with the brightness and contrast adjusted image; 93% with the sharpened image; and 94% when the density analysis tool was used. Compared to the unaided eye, the LCD can significantly improve dentists' ability to detect and classify caries. Dentists may be able to find twice as much early dentinal caries requiring restoration (or at least aggressive noninvasive treatment) than previously, while not unnecessarily restoring additional healthy teeth. The LCD enables dentists to obtain more information from dental digital radiography than is possible with the unaided eye, leading to improved patient care.

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is a diagnostic imaging modality that provides high-quality, accurate three-dimensional (3D) representations of the osseous elements of the maxillofacial skeleton. CBCT systems are available that provide small field of view images at low dose with sufficient spatial resolution for applications in endodontic diagnosis, treatment guidance, and posttreatment evaluation. This article provides a literature review and pictorial demonstration of CBCT as an imaging adjunct for endodontics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the in vitro reliability and accuracy of linear measurements between cephalometric landmarks on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) 3D volumetric images with varying basis projection images to direct measurements on human skulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixteen linear dimensions between 24 anatomic sites marked on 19 human skulls were directly measured. The skulls were imaged with CBCT (i-CAT, Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, Pa) at three settings: (a) 153 projections, (b) 306 projections, and (c) 612 projections. The mean absolute error and modality mean (+/- SD) of linear measurements between landmarks on volumetric renderings were compared to the anatomic truth using repeated measures general linear model (P < or = .05). RESULTS No difference in mean absolute error between the scan settings was found for almost all measurements. The average skull absolute error between marked reference points was less than the distances between unmarked reference sites. CBCT resulted in lower measurements for nine dimensions (mean difference range: 3.1 mm +/- 0.12 mm to 0.56 mm +/- 0.07 mm) and a greater measurement for one dimension (mean difference 3.3 mm +/- 0.12 mm). No differences were detected between CBCT scan sequences. CONCLUSIONS CBCT measurements were consistent between scan sequences and for direct measurements between marked reference points. Reducing the number of projections for 3D reconstruction did not lead to reduced dimensional accuracy and potentially provides reduced patient radiation exposure. Because the fiducial landmarks on the skulls were not radio-opaque, the inaccuracies found in measurement could be due to the methods applied rather than to innate inaccuracies in the CBCT scan reconstructions or 3D software employed.

Abstract
This article on x-ray cone-beam CT (CBCT) acquisition provides an overview of the fundamental principles of operation of this technology and the influence of geometric and software parameters on image quality and patient radiation dose. Advantages of the CBCT system and a summary of the uses and limitations of the images produced are discussed. All current generations of CBCT systems provide useful diagnostic images. Future enhancements most likely will be directed toward reducing scan time; providing multimodal imaging; improving image fidelity, including soft tissue contrast; and incorporating task-specific protocols to minimize patient dose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW The impact of digital imaging on dental practice depends upon the degree of planning conducted before implementation. Digital technologies have the potential to improve diagnosis; facilitate patient treatment procedures; and streamline storage, transfer and retrieval. These technologies also provide for secure backup of patients' image data, critical to re-establishing the practice should fire, flood or earthquake occur. CONCLUSIONS The decision to invest in digital radiographic equipment should be a simple one for dental practitioners. Although digital x-ray sensors have long equaled analog film for diagnostic tasks, they have several advantages over film radiography, including immediate image production with solid-state devices; interactive display on a monitor with the ability to enhance image features and make direct measurements; integrated storage with access to images through practice management software systems; security of available backup and off-site archiving; perfect radiographic duplicates to accompany referrals; security mechanisms to identify original images and differentiate them from altered images; the ability to tag information such as a patient identifier, date of exposure and other relevant details; and interoperability of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine file format. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Most clinicians should contemplate integrating, at a minimum, intraoral digital x-ray sensors and a digital panoramic system into their practices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare accuracy of linear measurements made on cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) derived 3-dimensional (3D) surface rendered volumetric images to direct measurements made on human skulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty orthodontic linear measurements between anatomical landmarks on 23 human skulls were measured by observers using a digital caliper. The skulls were imaged with CBCT and Dolphin 3D (version 2.3) software used to generate 3D volumetric reconstructions (3DCBCT). The linear measurements between landmarks were computed by a single observer three times and compared to anatomic dimensions using Student's t-test (P < or = .05). The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and absolute linear and percentage error were calculated. RESULTS The ICC for 3DCBCT (0.975 +/- 0.016) was significantly less than for skull (0.996 +/- 0.007) measurements. Mean percentage measurement error for 3DCBCT (2.31% +/- 2.11%) was significantly higher than replicate skull measurements (0.63% +/- 0.51%). Statistical differences between 3DCBCT means and true dimensions were found for all of the midsagittal measurements except Na-A and six of the 12 bilateral measurements. The mean percentage difference between the mean skull and 3D-based linear measurements was -1.13% (SD +/- 1.47%). Ninety percent of mean differences were less than 2 mm, and 95% confidence intervals were all less than 2 mm except for Ba-ANS (3.32 mm) and Pog-Go(left) (2.42 mm). CONCLUSIONS While many linear measurements between cephalometric landmarks on 3D volumetric surface renderings obtained using Dolphin 3D software generated from CBCT datasets may be statistically significantly different from anatomic dimensions, most can be considered to be sufficiently clinically accurate for craniofacial analyses.

Abstract
Currently in North America, there is an active dialogue going on about the state of predoctoral dental education and the need for curriculum change, innovation, and the adoption of contemporary, competency-based educational models. At the institutional level, curriculum committees struggle with requests from faculty to add new content to an overburdened didactic and clinic schedule. This article will describe potential solutions centering on the role and scope of the biomedical sciences in predoctoral dental education. The authors propose that dental educators and institutions reconsider the current admission prerequisites and curriculum content of the biomedical sciences in predoctoral programs. The proposed changes are intended to eliminate content redundancy between undergraduate and predoctoral dental education by integration of the biomedical sciences--in particular, biochemistry, microbiology, and physiology--into other clinically oriented coursework and learning experiences in the curriculum based on a pathophysiology model that fosters students' comprehension of the etiology of oral and systemic diseases encountered by the general dental practitioner. The authors explore how changes in the biomedical science prerequisites for dental school matriculation and associated modifications in curriculum focus and content would impact admissions testing, composition of national board exams, and strategies for teaching and learning within dental schools.
