Abstract
Three new aurantiactinomyxon types are described from the oligochaete Ilyodrilus templetoni (Southern, 1909) (Naididae) collected from a northern Portuguese estuary, based on light microscopy and sequencing of the 18S rDNA. The addition of I. templetoni to the group of freshwater annelids known to be permissive for aurantiactinomyxon development reinforces the crucial role of naidids in the evolution and settlement of myxozoans in estuarine environments. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of a comprehensive 18S rDNA dataset placed the novel types within the Paramyxidium clade. This positioning suggests them as probable life cycle counterparts to Paramyxidium spp. that most likely infect the European eel Anguilla anguilla, as the sole representative of Elopomorpha in Portuguese rivers. Although distance estimation revealed a genetic difference of only 0.4 % between Aurantiactinomyxon types 1 and 3, this value was determined to be representative of interspecific variability based on the consistent matching of both genotypes with distinct actinospore morphologies, and potential richness of closely related species of Paramyxidium infecting the European eel in Portuguese waters. The clustering of aurantiactinomyxon types within distinct myxosporean lineages, representative of the suborders Variisporina and Platysporina, demonstrates that the aurantiactinomyxon morphotype is highly functional in promoting myxozoan infections in estuarine environments.

Myxozoan survey of thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus reinforces successful radiation of Myxobolus in mugiliform hosts. Parasite 2023; 30:26. Abstract
A myxozoan survey was performed on specimens of thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus (Risso) captured from the Douro River estuary, northern Portugal. Eleven new species, all belonging to the genus Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (M. abdominalis n. sp., M. aestuarium n. sp., M. caudalis n. sp., M. chelonari n. sp., M. cucurbitiformis n. sp., M. douroensis n. sp., M. intestinicola n. sp., M. invictus n. sp., M. labicola n. sp., M. peritonaei n. sp., and M. pinnula n. sp.) are described based on microscopic and molecular data, confirming the known high radiation of these myxozoans in mullets. Additionally, Myxobolus pupkoi Gupta et al., 2022 is reported for the first time from C. labrosus, bringing forth a novel case of morphological plasticity between geographic isolates. We consider that molecular-based comparisons are imperative for the description of mugiliform-infecting Myxobolus, with distance estimation further matching two of the novel Myxobolus spp. with sphaeractinomyxon types previously reported from another Portuguese estuary. This finding supports sphaeractinomyxon as specific life cycle counterparts of Myxobolus that infect mullets. Phylogenetic analyses of 18S rDNA retrieved a monophyletic clade of mugiliform-infecting myxobolids comprising well-supported lineages of species parasitizing mullets from the genera Chelon, Mugil, Crenimugil, and Planiliza. The existence of more than one Chelon- and Planiliza-infecting lineage reveals that myxobolids parasitized members of these genera multiple times during their evolution. Lastly, the elevated number of unmatched sphaeractinomyxon sequences included in the Chelon-infecting lineages clearly shows that Myxobolus diversity hosted by this genus remains underrated.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2 RNA has been found in the human testis on occasion, but subgenomic SARS-CoV-2 and infectious SARS-CoV-2 virions have not been found. There is no direct evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection of testicular cells. To better understand this, it is necessary to determine whether SARS-CoV-2 receptors and proteases are present in testicular cells. To overcome this limitation, we focused on elucidating with immunohistochemistry the spatial distribution of the SARS-CoV-2 receptors angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and cluster of differentiation 147 (CD147), as well as their viral spike protein priming proteases, transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) and cathepsin L (CTSL), required for viral fusion with host cells. At the protein level, human testicular tissue expressed both receptors and proteases studied. Both ACE2 and TMPRSS2 were found in interstitial cells (endothelium, Leydig, and myoid peritubular cells) and in the seminiferous epithelium (Sertoli cells, spermatogonia, spermatocytes, and spermatids). The presence of CD147 was observed in all cell types except endothelium and peritubular cells, while CTSL was exclusively observed in Leydig, peritubular, and Sertoli cells. These findings show that the ACE2 receptor and its protease TMPRSS2 are coexpressed in all testicular cells, as well as the CD147 receptor and its protease CTSL in Leydig and Sertoli cells, indicating that testicular SARS-CoV-2 infection cannot be ruled out without further investigation.

Abstract
The gill of Aplysia depilans consists of several wedge-shaped pinnules with a highly folded structure, differing from the typical ctenidial gills of mollusks. Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate this organ in juveniles and adults. In this species, the gill epithelium comprised ciliated, unciliated, and secretory cells. The ultrastructural analysis suggests other functions for the gill besides respiration. The deep cell membrane invaginations associated with mitochondria in the basal region of epithelium point to a role in ion regulation. Endocytosis and intracellular digestion were other activities detected in epithelial cells. In juveniles, an intranuclear crystalline structure was seen in some ciliated cells. The presence of an intranuclear crystalline structure was frequently associated with chromatin decondensation, swelling of the nuclear envelope and endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, and abundance of Golgi stacks. As these intranuclear inclusions were not found in the gill of the adult specimens, their occurrence in the two juveniles seems likely to be an anomalous condition whose cause cannot be established at the moment. Mucous cells were the most abundant secretory cells in the epithelium, but a few epithelial serous cells were also found. In addition, large protein-secreting subepithelial cells had the main cell body inserted in the connective tissue and a long thin neck crossing the epithelium. Mucous cells can be considered responsible for the production of the mucus layer that protects the epithelium, but the specific functions of the epithelial and subepithelial protein-secreting cells remain elusive. Below the epithelium, a layer of connective tissue with muscle cells lined the narrow hemolymph space. The connective tissue included cells with a large amount of rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae. Bacteria were found on the surface of the gill, and the most abundant had a thin stalk for attachment to the epithelial cells.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies show that improper food handling practices at home account for a significant portion of foodborne illness cases. Mishandling of raw meat during meal preparation is one of the most frequent hazardous behaviours reported in observational research studies that potentially contributes to illness occurrence, particularly through the transfer of microbial pathogens from the raw meat to ready-to-eat (RTE) foods. This study evaluated the transfer of two major foodborne pathogens, Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes, from artificially contaminated chicken meat to lettuce via cooking salt (used for seasoning) during simulated domestic handling practices. Pieces of chicken breast fillets were spiked with five different loads (from ca. 1 to 5 Log CFU/g) of a multi-strain cocktail of either S. enterica or L. monocytogenes. Hands of volunteers (gloved) contaminated by handling the chicken, stirred the cooking salt that was further used to season lettuce leaves. A total of 15 events of cross-contamination (three volunteers and five bacterial loads) were tested for each pathogen. Immediately after the events, S. enterica was isolated from all the cooking salt samples (n = 15) and from 12 samples of seasoned lettuce; whereas L. monocytogenes was isolated from 13 salt samples and from all the seasoned lettuce samples (n = 15). In addition, S. enterica and L. monocytogenes were able to survive in artificially contaminated salt (with a water activity of 0.49) for, at least, 146 days and 126 days, respectively. The ability of these foodborne pathogens to survive for a long time in cooking salt, make it a good vehicle for transmission and cross-contamination if consumers do not adopt good hygiene practices when preparing meals. Pathogens may contaminate cooking salt via cross-contamination from unwashed hands. Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes survive on salt for several weeks. Pathogens are transmitted from contaminated chicken to hands, and then to salt. L. monocytogenes and S. enterica present in lettuce seasoned with contaminated salt.

Abstract
Campylobacter spp. are the most common bacterial pathogens associated with human gastroenteritis in industrialized countries. Contaminated chicken is the food vehicle associated with the majority of reported cases of campylobacteriosis, either by the consumption of undercooked meat or via cross- contamination of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods during the handling of contaminated raw chicken parts and carcasses. Our results indicate that cooking salt (used for seasoning) is a potential vehicle for Campylobacter spp. cross-contamination from raw chicken to lettuce, through unwashed hands after handling contaminated chicken. Cross-contamination events were observed even when the chicken skin was contaminated with low levels of Campylobacter spp. (ca. 1.48 Log CFU/g). The pathogen was recovered from seasoned lettuce samples when raw chicken was contaminated with levels ≥ 2.34 Log CFU/g. We also demonstrated that, once introduced into cooking salt, Campylobacter spp. are able to survive in a culturable state up to 4 hours. After six hours, although not detected following an enrichment period in culture medium, intact cells were observed by transmission electron microscopy. These findings reveal a "novel" indirect cross-contamination route of Campylobacter in domestic settings, and a putative contamination source to RTE foods that are seasoned with salt, that might occur if basic food hygiene practices are not adopted by consumers when preparing and cooking poultry dishes.

Abstract
The esophageal pouches of Chaetopleura angulata and Acanthochitona fascicularis were investigated using light and transmission electron microscopy. These pouches linked to the posterior region of the esophagus are known as sugar glands as they contain a fluid rich in polysaccharide digesting enzymes. They are the second largest glands in the digestive system of chitons, just after the digestive gland. In both species, the pouches contain a dense array of finger-shaped villi. The villi epithelium includes absorptive cells, basophilic secretory cells, mucus-secreting cells, and basal cells. Some absorptive cells were bordered by a dense cover of long microvilli, whereas other absorptive cells had short and sparse microvilli. Absorptive cells contain several lysosomes, mitochondria, peroxisomes, a few small Golgi stacks, some lipid droplets, and large amounts of glycogen. The basophilic secretory cells are characterized by the presence of many electron-dense vesicles, with a glycoprotein content, a large number of rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, and a highly developed Golgi apparatus. Mucus-secreting cells are characterized by large vesicles containing acid polysaccharides and wide Golgi stacks. Basal cells that were found at the base of the epithelium in contact with the basal lamina exhibit histological and ultrastructural features of enteroendocrine cells. We suggest that these glandular pouches are involved in extracellular and intracellular digestion, and accumulate lipid and glycogen reserves.

Abstract
The approach to the patient with gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) can be very complex. A multidisciplinary panel of physicians with expertise in Gastroenterology, Anesthesiology, and Transfusion Medicine worked together to provide the best knowledge and guide clinical practitioners in the real setting of health institutions, characterized by disparate availability of human and technical resources. The authors propose a global and personalized approach according to different clinical scenarios to improve the outcomes of patients with GIB, for whom the reduction of inappropriate transfusions is crucial. The goal of this document is to provide clear and objective guidance through interventional algorithms toward a goal-directed approach according to the clinical situation and supported by the latest available scientific data on GIB management in different settings.

Abstract
Patients undergoing angioplasty and stent insertion require double prophylactic anti-aggregation or monotherapy. This is a challenging procedure with a high risk of morbidity and coronary mortality. The aim of this protocol is to provide guidelines for a presurgical approach to patients with a coronary stent who will be undergoing non-coronary surgery. This protocol highlights potential complications that may occur, namely those related with the cardiac stent and the evaluation of cardiac risk, and notes the thrombotic and hemorrhagic risks associated with the surgical procedure and the decision algorithms for both elective surgery and urgent surgery involving the suspension and re-introduction of antiplatelet therapy. Our main goal is to outline an optimized approach to these cases in order to improve cardiac outcomes and to minimize the risk of complications.

Abstract
Mullets are ecologic and commercially important fish species. Their ubiquitous nature allows them to play critical roles in freshwater and marine ecosystems but makes them more vulnerable to diseases and parasitic infection. In this study, a myxozoan survey was performed on three species of mullet captured from a northern Portuguese river. The results disclose a high biodiversity, specifically due to the hyperdiversification of Myxobolus. Thirteen new species of this genus are described based on microscopic and molecular procedures: 7 from the thinlip grey mullet Chelon ramada, 2 from the thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus, and 4 from the flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus. Myxobolus exiguus and Ellipsomyxa mugilis are further registered from their type host C. ramada, as well as six more myxospore morphotypes that possibly represent distinct Myxobolus species. Overall, the results obtained clearly show that the number of host-, site- and tissue-specific Myxobolus spp. is much higher than what would be expected in accordance to available literature. This higher biodiversity is therefore discussed as either being the result of the usage of poor discriminative criteria in previous studies, or as being a direct consequence of the biological and ecological traits of the parasite and of its vertebrate and invertebrate host communities. Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analyses position the new species within a clade comprising all other Myxobolus spp. that infect mugiliform hosts, thus suggesting that this parasitic group has a monophyletic origin. Clustering of species in relation to the host genus is also revealed and strengthens the contention that the evolutionary history of mugiliform-infecting Myxobolus reflects that of its vertebrate hosts. In this view, the hyperdiversification of Myxobolus in mullet hosts is hypothesized to correlate with the processes of speciation that led to the ecological plasticity of mullets.

Abstract
We describe, morphologically and molecularly, a new actinosporean from the intestinal epithelium of the freshwater oligochaete Ilyodrilus templetoni in the upper estuary of the River Minho, Northern Portugal. Mature actinospores resembled both echinactinomyxon and raabeia types, emphasizing the previously known lack of a clear boundary between these 2 collective groups. Historically, raabeia and echinactinomyxon types have been differentiated solely based on the shape of the valvular processes being curved or straight, respectively. Our observations, however, show that this morphological character is too variable for distinguishing between these 2 collective groups, since the actinospores of the raabeia described here displayed valvular processes that could either be straight, downward or upward curved. Several similar cases can be found in the available literature. Considering this overlap in actinospore morphology, we propose that echinactinomyxon be deemed invalid and its types be included in raabeia, as the latter constitutes the older of the 2 groups. Known echinactinomyxon types, however, should not be renamed as raabeia, as this would create unnecessary confusion. Accordingly, a more comprehensive definition of the raabeia collective group is provided. Phylogenetic analyses revealed polyphyletic clustering of raabeia/echinactinomyxon types among members of the myxosporean suborders Variisporina and Platysporina, reiterating the lack of agreement between actinosporean morphotypes and myxosporean genera. The new type described here specifically clusters within the Paramyxidium clade, alongside other SSU rDNA sequences of raabeia, echinactinomyxon, aurantiactinomyxon and synactinomyxon. Considering that most Paramyxidium spp. parasitize Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), future myxozoan surveys in the River Minho should include this species.

Abstract
The Iberian Peninsula provides a unique freshwater ecosystem for native and endemic cypriniforms to thrive. Despite cypriniforms being hosts to multiple myxobolids worldwide, little research has been performed in this geographic location. In this study, the examination of three Iberian endemic cypriniforms showed that myxosporean richness in the Iberian Peninsula is underestimated, with three new and one known myxobolid species being reported based on morphological and molecular data (SSU). Myxobolus arcasii n. sp. is described from the kidney and gonads of the "bermejuela" Achondrostoma arcasii, M. duriensis n. sp. from the gills of the Northern straight-mouth nase Pseudochondrostoma duriense, and Thelohanellus paludicus n. sp. from the intestine of the Southern Iberian spined-loach Cobitis paludica. Myxobolus pseudodispar Gorbunova, 1936 is further reported from several organs of P. duriense, and from the spleen of A. arcasii. The occurrence of M. pseudodispar in endemic Iberian species reveals that host-shift followed its co-introduction with central European leuciscids into this geographic location. Several other myxobolids originally described from barbels in central Europe have also been reported from the Iberian endemic cypriniform Luciobarbus bocagei. Nonetheless, except for M. musculi, the identification of these myxobolids in L. bocagei is here shown to be dubious and require molecular confirmation. Phylogenetic analyses reveal M. arcasii n. sp. and M. duriensis n. sp. clustering within different lineages of leuciscid-infecting species, showing that myxobolids entered Leuciscidae as hosts multiple times during their evolution. Constituting the first myxobolid reported from the subfamily Cobitinae, Thelohanellus paludicus n. sp. stands alone in the tree topology.

Mannitol oxidase and polyol dehydrogenases are enzymes that convert polyalcohols into sugars. Mannitol oxidase was previously investigated in terrestrial snails and slugs, being also present in a few aquatic gastropods. However, the overall distribution of this enzyme in the Gastropoda was not known. Polyol dehydrogenases are also poorly studied in gastropods and other mollusks. In this study, polyalcohol oxidase and dehydrogenase activities were assayed in the digestive gland of 26 species of gastropods, representing the clades Patellogastropoda, Neritimorpha, Vetigastropoda, Caenogastropoda and Heterobranchia. Marine, freshwater and terrestrial species, including herbivores and carnivores were analyzed. Ultrastructural observations were undertake in species possessing mannitol oxidase, in order to investigate the correlation between this enzyme and the presence of tubular structures known to be associated with it. Mannitol oxidase activity was detected in the digestive gland of herbivores from the clades Caenogastropoda and Heterobranchia, but not in any carnivores or in herbivores from the clades Patellogastropoda, Neritimorpha and Vetigastropoda. In most of the species used in this study, dehydrogenase activities were detected using both D-mannitol and D-sorbitol as substrates. Nevertheless, in some carnivores these activities were not detected with both polyalcohols. Ultrastructural observations revealed tubular structures in digestive gland cells of some species having mannitol oxidase activity, but they were not observed in others. Based on our results, we suggest that mannitol oxidase first occurred in a herbivorous or omnivorous ancestor of Apogastropoda, the clade formed by caenogastropods and heterobranchs, being subsequently lost in those species that shifted towards a carnivorous diet.

Abstract
Due to its biological and systematic importance, the morphology and function of the male copulatory apparatus of Haminoea navicula, a Cephalaspidea gastropod mollusk, was investigated by light and electron microscopy. These systems are poorly understood in haminoids, but are often used in the taxonomy of the genus. In H. navicula, the male copulatory apparatus comprises the penis within a penial sheath, a seminal duct and the prostate with two lobes. The penis is a muscular structure with a tip covered by spikes formed by muscular cells. The penial sheath consists of muscular tissue folds lined by an epithelium. Below this epithelium, polysaccharide-secreting cells and pigment cells were observed. A large number of vacuolar cells were found below the ciliated epithelium of the seminal duct. The proximal lobe of the prostate was formed by tubules that could be divided in basal, middle and apical zones, containing cells that secrete polysaccharides and proteins. The tubules of the prostate distal lobe contained a single type of secretory cells with vesicles that were stained by histochemical techniques for detection of polysaccharides and proteins. Ciliated cells were present along the tubules in both lobes of the prostate. This study revealed a complex prostate with five types of secretory cells, which secrete substances that should be involved in the maintenance and eventually also in the maturation of spermatozoa. A comparison with previous publications, shows that the male copulatory apparatus can differ substantially among cephalaspideans, even between H. navicula and non-European species attributed to this genus.

Abstract
A new myxosporean parasite, Auerbachia maamouni n. sp., infecting the gallbladder of the golden trevally Gnathanodon speciosus Forsskål, is described, based on morphology, ultrastructure, and small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene sequencing. Of 50 fish collected from the Red Sea in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, five were found heavily infected with mature myxospores floating free in the bile. Mature spores are pyriform to club-shaped with smooth valves, and contain a single polar capsule with an S-shaped polar filament, arranged in 13-16 polar filament coils, oriented longitudinally, with an irregular distribution on the polar capsule matrix. Spores measure 15.8 (14-17) μm in total length in lateral view, 7.9 (6-9) μm in width in apical view, with spore body length of 6.2 ± 0.4 (5-7) µm. The ellipsoidal polar capsule has two adjusted lateral folds 7.6 (6-8) µm long and 2 (2-3) µm wide. The new species is distinguished from other species of the genus based on spore morphometry and molecular data. The phylogenetic tree constructed using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analysis of SSU rDNA sequence data supported the phylogenetic position of A. maamouni n. sp. among the species of Auerbachia Meglitsch, 1968 sequenced to date. Analysis of the SSU rDNA sequence data also supported the assumption that Auerbachia is closely related to members of the genera Coccomyxa Léger & Hesse, 1907, Zschokkella Auerbach, 1910 and Myxidium Bütschli, 1882, whose members inhabit the gallbladder of marine teleost fishes.

Abstract
Several clinical settings are associated with specific coagulopathies that predispose to uncontrolled bleeding. With the growing concern about the need for optimizing transfusion practices and improving treatment of the bleeding patient, a group of 9 Portuguese specialists (Share Network Group) was created to discuss and develop algorithms for the clinical evaluation and control of coagulopathic bleeding in the following perioperative clinical settings: surgery, trauma, and postpartum hemorrhage. The 3 algorithms developed by the group were presented at the VIII National Congress of the Associação Portuguesa de Imuno-hemoterapia in October 2013. They aim to provide a structured approach for clinicians to rapidly diagnose the status of coagulopathy in order to achieve an earlier and more effective bleeding control, reduce transfusion requirements, and improve patient outcomes. The group highlights the importance of communication between different specialties involved in the care of bleeding patients in order to achieve better results.

Abstract
Myxobolus myleus n. sp. is described from the gall-bladder of the freshwater fish Myleus rubripinnis collected near the city of Oriximiná in the Amazon System, Brazil. The spores obtained from the bile contained two equal symmetrical and smooth valves, each forming the spore wall. The spores were large, with a cone-like form, a semi spherical basal contour and measured (in μm) 19.3 ± 0.5 (n = 25) × 8.3 ± 0.5 (n = 25) × 4.0 ± 0.3 (n = 15). The apical end of the spores contained two elongate, equal and pointed conical polar capsules measuring 13.2 ± 0.4 μm (n = 25) in length and 3.0 ± 0.3 μm (n = 15) in width, each having a slightly tapering polar filament with 19 to 21 turns. The polar capsules were extended below at about 4/5 of the total length of the spores. The sporoplasm was binucleate and contained some sporoplasmosomes. All infected fish presented hypertrophy of the gall-bladder due to presence of the brownish parasite floating in the bile. In this paper we describe this new species of myxosporean based on light and ultrastructural observations, together with its associated pathology.
