Retraction Note: The relationship of kinesiophobia with depression and anxiety in nursing homes

The article "The relationship of kinesiophobia with depression and anxiety in nursing homes", by Ö. Yükselmiş, published in Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2023; 27 (6): 2305-2313-DOI: 10.26355/eurrev_202303_31764-PMID: 37013748 has been retracted by the Editor in Chief. After publication, issues were raised about the authorship of this article by a reader stating that the article plagiarized a thesis published in Turkish. After receiving the thesis and translating it into English, the Journal compared the two texts and found they share the same results. The author re-elaborated the thesis by using the same data to create and publish a new article. The reader also stated that the Ethics Committee approval provided by the author was fake. The journal contacted the University to investigate this issue but never received a reply. After being informed, the corresponding author gave no plausible reply to these issues and asked to withdraw the manuscript. Given the evidence, the Editor in Chief decided to withdraw the manuscript and blacklisted the author for any future submissions. This manuscript has been withdrawn. The relationship of kinesiophobia with depression and anxiety in nursing homes

OBJECTIVE

Within the scope of our study, it was conducted to examine kinesiophobia and fear of falling in elderly individuals staying in nursing homes.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Our study was conducted with 175 elderly individuals who stayed in nursing homes affiliated with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies in Ankara, Bolu, and Düzce provinces between January 2021 and April 2021. After the demographic information was obtained, the anxiety/fear of falling was evaluated with the Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I), kinesiophobia with the Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale, and the depression levels with the Beck Depression Scale.

RESULTS

A significant correlation was found between depression levels (p=0.023). A significant correlation was found between the anxiety/fear of falling and the number of chronic diseases, increasing age, female gender, and assistive device use (p=0.011). While there was a significant correlation between having a chronic illness, increasing age, the use of assistive devices, the presence of falls, and kinesiophobia, a significant negative correlation was found with physical activity (p=0.033).

CONCLUSIONS

As a result, while falling individuals had an increased kinesiophobia, it was observed that individuals with increased kinesiophobia had more anxiety/fear of falling, and individuals with this condition had higher levels of depression.

Proflactic effects of rosmarinic acid on spinal cord injury in rats

PURPOSE

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes various neurological consequences that disrupt the structure of axons. The C/EBP Homologous Protein (CHOP) acts in neuronal death by apoptosis has been demonstrated in experimental models. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a phenolic compound used for therapeutic purposes in many diseases. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of Rosmarinic acid application on inflammation and apoptotic development after spinal cord injury.

METHODS

Male Wistar albino rats (n: 24) were assigned to three group: control, SCI and SCI+ RA. All rats were fixed on the operating table after anesthesia, the skin of the thoracic region was opened with a midline incision and the paravertebral muscles were dissected and T10-T11 laminas were exposed. A cylindrical tube of 10 cm length was fixed to the area to be laminectomy. A metal weight of 15 grams was left down the tube. Spinal damage was created, skin incisions were sutured. 50 mg/kg rosmarinic acid was given orally for 7 days after the spinal injury. Spinal tissues were fixed in formaldehyde solution and processed for paraffin wax tissue protocol and 4-5 μm sections were taken with microtome for further immunohistochemical examination. Caspase-12 and CHOP antibodies were applied to sections. Remaining tissues were carried out in glutaraldehyde for the first fixation then in osmium tetroxide for the second. Tissues were kept in pure araldite and thin sections were taken for transmission electron microscope.

RESULTS

Values of malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), glutathione peroxidase (GSH), neuronal degeneration, vascular dilation, inflammation, CHOP and Caspase-12 expression were increased in SCI group compared to control group. Only glutathione peroxidase content was decreased in SCI group. In SCI group, disruption of basement membrane structure in canalis ependymalis, degeneration in structures of unipolar bipolar and multipolar neurons, and apoptotic changes were seen with increased inflammation in the piamater region and positive CHOP expression in vascular endothelial cells. In SCI+RA group, reorganization of basement membrane pill in canalis ependymalis were observed with mild Caspase-12 activity in some canalis ependymal and glial cells. Also, moderate CHOP expression in multipolar and bipolar neurons and glia cells were observed.

CONCLUSIONS

The application of RA has a significant effect on preventing damage in SCI. It was thought that CHOP and Caspase-12 mediated oxidative stress could be a guide in showing the potential and therapeutic target to stop the apoptotic course after SCI injury.

The relationship between exam anxiety, depression, and back pain in physicians preparing for the specialty exam

OBJECTIVE

This study aims at examining the possibility of anxiety and depression in physicians preparing for the specialty exam and the back pain caused by continuous working with these depressive symptoms.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

The research was started by getting approval from the local Ethics Committee of Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital. Socio-demographic data form, EQ-5D general quality of life scale, Oswestry low back pain disability scale, and Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) were applied to volunteers.

RESULTS

Among the physicians participating in our study, both anxiety and depression scores from the HADS scale scores applied to the exam preparation group were statistically significantly higher than those of students who did not prepare for the exam.

CONCLUSIONS

In our study, the highness of the scale scores in the exam preparation group was statistically high. It should not be ignored that there may be complaints of anxiety, depression, and low back pain during the preparation period for the specialty examination in physicians. During the exams' periods, psychosocial support mechanisms should be activated, and active exercise activities should be recommended. For more detailed data, large-scale participatory studies are needed.
