Reformulated meat products protect against ischemia-induced cardiac damage

The protective effects of the antioxidants present in food are of great relevance for cardiovascular health. This study evaluates whether the extracts from reformulated meat products with a reduction in fat and/or sodium content exert a cardioprotective effect against ischemia-induced oxidative stress in cardiomyocytes, compared with non-meat foods. Ischemic damage caused loss of cell viability, increased reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation and decreased the antioxidant activity. Pretreatment for 24 h with digested or non-digested extracts from reformulated meat products led to protection against ischemia-induced oxidative damage: increased cell viability, reduced oxidative stress and restored the antioxidant activity. Similar results were obtained using extracts from tuna fish, but not with the extracts of green peas, salad or white beans. These results suggest that reformulated meat products have a beneficial impact in protecting cardiac cells against ischemia, and they may represent a source of natural antioxidants with benefits for cardiovascular health.

Impact of the introduction of rapid HIV testing in the Voluntary Counselling and Testing sites network of Catalonia, Spain

Summary

Rapid HIV antibody tests, which provide results within 15–60 minutes, can help reduce the number of unrecognized infections by improving access to testing facilities and increase the number of people tested who know their results. After an acceptability study, rapid HIV testing was first implemented in Catalonia in 2007 within the community-based Voluntary Counselling and Testing sites network. One year after implementation, an increase of 102.9% has been observed in the number of tests performed, ranging from 8.4% to 328.3% according to the site. Despite the important immediate impact of rapid HIV testing on the number of tests performed, there was no significant change in the proportion of tests that were positive. Rapid HIV testing can help increase access to testing, but it should be complemented with specific outreach programmes targeting the most vulnerable subgroups.

[Rare Diseases: chronic diseases that need a new approach]

The concept of Rare Diseases is relatively new. They are those processes "...that can be mortal or to cause a chronic weakening of the patient and who, due to its little prevalence, require combined efforts to treat them. For indicative purposes, a little prevalence is considered when is lesser than 5 cases per 10,000 people in the Community". The existence of these diseases is closely tied with orphan drugs, meaning all drugs, prosthesis, biological agents or dietetic preparations destined to the treatment of a Rare Disease. Besides, it is necessary to add two factors more: 1. The Primary Attention physicians do not feel very motivated in their knowledge and 2. These diseases need a complex sociosanitary attention, habitually more expensive than chronic diseases. By all exposed the Rare Diseases appear like a universe that requires a new sociosanitary approach from the health system.

[Lipid profile of the Spanish population: the DRECE (diet and risk of cardiovascular disease in Spain) study. DRECE study group]

BACKGROUND

In Spain the mortality rate due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) is relatively low compared to that of other developed countries. Until now few epidemiological studies have been performed among the global Spanish population to evaluate a relation between CVD risk factors and the lipid profile that could justify our privileged situation. For, this reason, the DRECE study was designed to know the situation at present in Spain respect to the risk of suffering from CVD in particular, the lipid profile.

POPULATION AND METHODS

This study included 4,787 subjects (2,324 males and 2,463 females) with an age ranging from 5-60 years, representative of the total Spanish population with these characteristics during the period from 1992 to 1994. Medical history was made for all participants, who also underwent a physical examination. The following parameters were determined: total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins cholesterol HDLc, cholesterol transported by low-density lipoproteins, LDLc (estimated by the Friedewald's formula), apolipoprotein AI and apoliprotein B (immunoturbidimetry).

RESULTS

The results obtained and expressed in mean (SD) show that, although the population has total cholesterol concentrations (190.1 [42.4] and 192.8 [44.8] mg/dl for females and males, respectively) and LDLc (113.9 [37.9] and 117.5 [38.1] mg/dl for females and males, respectively) with values as high as those found in developed countries, the HDLc concentrations (58.6 [13.2] and 51.5 [13.4] mg/dl for women and men, respectively) are also increased and this could be the reason why the mortality rate in Spain caused by CVD is lower than in other countries.

CONCLUSIONS

The finding of high HDLc levels and their antiatherogenic role could justify that, at best in part, the rate mortality in Spain is lower than in other developed countries.

[Changes in the lipid profiles of hyperlipemic patients treated with binifibrate]

Forty six, after six weeks of low fat diet (step 1) hyperlipidemic patients, age 20 to 65 years, both sexes, have been studied to recognize the effectiveness of three months drug treatment with Binifibrate (600 mg T.I.D.). Total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol (cLDL), HDL-cholesterol (cHDL), apoprotein A, apoprotein B and other routinal biochemical parameters were controlled at 0, 30 and 60 days of treatment. A significative total cholesterol, cLDL and apo B lowering plus a significative cHDL and apo A increase was registered. Results reflect a beneficial effect of Binifibrate on lipoprotein metabolism and in such wise, locate this drug as an interesting one for hyperlipidemic situations treatment.
