Predictions of in situ solid/liquid distribution of radiocaesium in soils

Previous work has demonstrated that plant uptake of radiocaesium (RCs) is related to the activity concentration of RCs in soil solution, which is linked to the soil/soil solution distribution coefficient, K(D). The solid-liquid distribution of RCs is generally studied in soil suspensions in the laboratory and there are few reported measurements for in situ soil solutions. From a data set of 53 different soils (contaminated with either 134CsCl or 137CsCl) used in pot trials to investigate grass uptake of RCs, we analysed the variation of in situ K(D) with measured soil properties. The soils differed widely in % clay (0.5-58%), organic matter content (1.9-96%) and pH (2.4-7.0, CaCl2). The K(D) varied between 29 and 375,000 L kg-' (median 1460 L kg(-1)). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed a significant correlation between the log K(D) and pH (p < 0.001), log %clay (p < 0.01) and log exchangeable K (p < 0.001) (overall R2 = 0.70). The in situ K(D) values were further compared to K(D)S predicted using an existing model, which assumes that RCs sorption occurs on specific sites and regular ion-exchange sites on the soil solid phase. Sorption of RCs on specific sites was quantified from the radiocaesium interception potential (RIP) measured for each soil and the soil solution concentrations of K+ and NH4+. The in situ log K(D) correlated well with the predicted K(D) (R2 = 0.85 before plant growth, R2 = 0.83 after plant growth). However, the observations were fivefold to eightfold higher than the predictions, particularly for the mineral soils. We attribute the under-prediction to the long contact times (minimum 4 weeks) between the RCs tracers and our experimental soils relative to the short (24 h) contact times used in RIP measurements. We conclude that our data confirmed the model but that ageing of RCs in soil is a factor that needs to be considered to better predict in situ KD values.

Modelling the role of humic acid in radiocaesium distribution in a British upland peat soil

The significance of exchange sites on organic matter in the retention of radiocaesium in highly organic soils remains unclear. To quantify this retention, we measured the binding of 134Cs to a humic acid isolated from a British upland peat soil, under a range of chemical conditions. We interpreted our results using Humic Ion Binding Model V, a model of humic substance chemistry which simulates ion exchange by non-specific accumulation of cations adjacent to the humic molecules. Model V could simulate the humic acid-solution partitioning of Cs under all the solution conditions used. The model was used to estimate the contribution of organic matter to Cs sorption by the whole soil composite. An estimate of Cs sorption by illite frayed edge sites was also made. These simulations show that organic matter may play only a minor role in binding Cs. even in highly organic soils.

Diagnosis of human neurocysticerocosis in endemic countries: a clinical study in Honduras

With the purpose of evaluating the available methodology for neurocysticercosis (NCC) diagnosis, 60 neurological patients were studied during a 4-year period in Honduras. Neurological evaluation, Computed Tomography (CT), cysticercosis Enzyme-Linked Immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) assay, electroencephalographic studies, and collection of epidemiological information were performed to assess a final diagnosis. The presenting clinical manifestations were: epileptic seizures (52%), headache without intracranial pressure (27%) and intracranial hypertension (10%). A protocol for the diagnosis of NCC is suggested. According to this protocol, patients with active (live) cysticercus and/or antibodies in Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were diagnosed as definitive cases of NCC, whereas those with only brain calcifications were diagnosed as probable cases. NCC diagnosis was definitive in 14 (23%) patients, probable in 32 (54%) and ruled out in 14 (23%). Of the patients with epileptic seizures, six (19%) had definitive and 20 (65%) had probable NCC. Overall seropositivity was 28%. EITB positivity varied from 14 to 100%, and from 20 to 35% in definitive and probable cases of NCC, respectively. When compared to CT, EITB overall sensitivity for definitive, active cases, was 50% in serum and 63% in CSF. These results suggest that brain images combined with neurological evaluation remains the best approach for neurocysticercosis diagnosis, and that EITB, even though its variable sensitivity, offers valuable information, especially if performed in CSF.

Seroprevalence of Taenia solium cysticercosis in pigs in a rural community of Honduras

Several retrospective studies have shown that human Taenia solium cysticercosis is endemic in Honduras, but very few reports of porcine cysticercosis in rural communities have been published. To determine the local prevalence of this disease in pigs, a serological survey has been undertaken in a rural community, Salamá, in the Department of Olancho in central Honduras. Eighty-five families raising pigs in the community were randomly selected and sera were obtained from pigs older than one month of age. The sera were examined by the enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot assay (EITB). Of 192 porcine sera, 27.1% (52) were positive by the EITB. Seropositivity did not correlate with age and sex by statistical analysis. With respect to the number and the frequency of recognition of the seven diagnostic glycoprotein bands in the EITB, 67.3% of the positive serum specimens recognized only one band and 80.8% of them recognized GP42-39. Since recognition of GP42-39 has been reported as a characteristic of late infection, these results suggest that most of the seropositive pigs were in the late stage of infection (more than 5-8 weeks postinfection). It seems that pigs in this community may be infected with this parasite soon after the birth and be in a hyperendemic steady state. In view of a high prevalence of antibodies to T. solium in pigs or characteristics of the antigen detected by the EITB, the infection pressure of T. solium appears to be very high in this community. This is probably the case in most of the communities in Honduras.

Guided tissue regeneration procedure applied to the treatment of endodontic-periodontal disease: analysis of a case

The clinical condition of a patient with chronic adult-type periodontal disease, as well as gingival recession reaching the tooth apex on a mandibular lateral incisor, is discussed. Because the use of conventional techniques would have resulted in tooth loss, the guided tissue regeneration procedure was applied, with successful results.

Nutrition in leprosy: a review

The literature relating diet to leprosy is abundant between 1900 and 1960, peaking around 1940. Dietary factors that appear to influence the etiopathogenesis of Hansen's disease include: vitamin A, vitamin B group, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, and zinc. We noted a frequent lack of detailed dietary data in much of the literature cited. This is particularly true when the thrust of the investigation is not dietary. The literature strongly suggests the beneficial influence of adequate diet on the outcome of Hansen's disease and the deleterious effect of a deficient diet. In contrast with the paucity of reported hard data in the previous reviews concerned with the effect of nutrition and diet on leprosy, is the increasing volume of literature reviews and experimental studies showing the profound impact of nutrition and diet on the immune system of man and laboratory animals. That diet has a global, if poorly understood, effect on the immune system is being increasingly recognized. The difficult question that remains is how to use this information in the control and prevention of disease. Therefore, we believe that more emphasis should be given to diet in the study of this important worldwide disease in light of the current understanding of biochemistry and immunology.
