Imaging Fluorescence of He_{2}^{*} Excimers Created by Neutron Capture in Liquid Helium II

We show unequivocal evidence for formation of He_{2}^{*} excimers in liquid He II created by ionizing radiation produced through neutron capture. Laser beams induce fluorescence of the excimers. The fluorescence is recorded at a rate of 55.6 Hz by a camera. The location of the fluorescence is determined with an uncertainty of 5  μm. The technique provides an opportunity to record the flow of He_{2}^{*} excimers in a medium with very small viscosity and enables measurement of turbulence around macroscopic liter size objects or vortex matter in three dimensions.

Psychiatric Mother and Baby Inpatient Units

During the perinatal period, women may experience severe mental health problems. Research has shown the potential negative impact of mother-baby's separation and of parental psychiatric illness, on the child. MBUs care requires different staff's expertise in order to: treat women with psychiatric disorders, ensure child care and development, and support appropriate mother–infant interaction with “good enough” mothering. For this, a multidisciplinary team is needed. Specific attention is also given to the child's father. Most MBUs may admit women with infants from birth till one year old and during several weeks or months.

More than two third of admitted women are discharged either symptom-free or greatly improved. An efficient follow up at discharge should be prepared with the women, the child's father, when presents, and linked to familial, social and medical resources. Moreover, MBUs staff should collaborate with other psychiatrists, obstetricians, midwives, pediatricians, and social workers. Mother–baby units should be part of a local health perinatal network including maternity unit, neonatal care, and community resources.

Referral for admission in MBUs may be required for women with a first acute episode, or a relapse, of a severe psychiatric disorder such as postpartum psychosis, manic disorder, major depressive episodes, schizophrenia, personality or behavior disorders. Moreover for prevention purposes, referral of women with known chronic mental health problems may start already during pregnancy.

Challenge of benefice and limit of MBUs’ care will be discussed with participants.

Soil diversity and hydration as observed by ChemCam at Gale crater, Mars

The ChemCam instrument, which provides insight into martian soil chemistry at the submillimeter scale, identified two principal soil types along the Curiosity rover traverse: a fine-grained mafic type and a locally derived, coarse-grained felsic type. The mafic soil component is representative of widespread martian soils and is similar in composition to the martian dust. It possesses a ubiquitous hydrogen signature in ChemCam spectra, corresponding to the hydration of the amorphous phases found in the soil by the CheMin instrument. This hydration likely accounts for an important fraction of the global hydration of the surface seen by previous orbital measurements. ChemCam analyses did not reveal any significant exchange of water vapor between the regolith and the atmosphere. These observations provide constraints on the nature of the amorphous phases and their hydration.

Signals of the QCD phase transition in core-collapse supernovae

We explore the implications of the QCD phase transition during the postbounce evolution of core-collapse supernovae. Using the MIT bag model for the description of quark matter, we model phase transitions that occur during the early postbounce evolution. This stage of the evolution can be simulated with general relativistic three-flavor Boltzmann neutrino transport. The phase transition produces a second shock wave that triggers a delayed supernova explosion. If such a phase transition happens in a future galactic supernova, its existence and properties should become observable as a second peak in the neutrino signal that is accompanied by significant changes in the energy of the emitted neutrinos. This second neutrino burst is dominated by the emission of antineutrinos because the electron degeneracy is reduced when the second shock passes through the previously neutronized matter.

Consequences of nuclear electron capture in core collapse supernovae

The most important weak nuclear interaction to the dynamics of stellar core collapse is electron capture, primarily on nuclei with masses larger than 60. In prior simulations of core collapse, electron capture on these nuclei has been treated in a highly parametrized fashion, if not ignored. With realistic treatment of electron capture on heavy nuclei come significant changes in the hydrodynamics of core collapse and bounce. We discuss these as well as the ramifications for the postbounce evolution in core collapse supernovae.

Electron capture rates on nuclei and implications for stellar core collapse

Supernova simulations to date have assumed that during core collapse electron captures occur dominantly on free protons, while captures on heavy nuclei are Pauli blocked and are ignored. We have calculated rates for electron capture on nuclei with mass numbers A=65-112 for the temperatures and densities appropriate for core collapse. We find that these rates are large enough so that, in contrast to previous assumptions, electron capture on nuclei dominates over capture on free protons. This leads to significant changes in core collapse simulations.

Simulation of the spherically symmetric stellar core collapse, bounce, and postbounce evolution of a star of 13 solar masses with boltzmann neutrino transport, and its implications for the supernova mechanism

With exact three-flavor Boltzmann neutrino transport, we simulate the stellar core collapse, bounce, and postbounce evolution of a 13M star in spherical symmetry, the Newtonian limit, without invoking convection. In the absence of convection, prior spherically symmetric models, which implemented approximations to Boltzmann transport, failed to produce explosions. We consider exact transport to determine if these failures were due to the transport approximations made and to answer remaining fundamental questions in supernova theory. The model presented here is the first in a sequence of models beginning with different progenitors. In this model, a supernova explosion is not obtained.

Technique for direct eV-scale measurements of the Mu and tau neutrino masses using supernova neutrinos

Early black hole formation in a core-collapse supernova will abruptly truncate the neutrino fluxes. The sharp cutoff can be used to make model-independent time-of-flight neutrino mass tests. Assuming a neutrino luminosity of 10(52) erg/s per flavor at cutoff and a distance of 10 kpc, Super-Kamiokande can detect an electron neutrino mass as small as 1.8 eV, and the proposed OMNIS detector can detect mu and tau neutrino masses as small as 6 eV. We present the first technique with direct sensitivity to eV-scale mu and tau neutrino masses.
