Intravenous Laser Wavelength Irradiation Effect on Interleukins: IL-1α, IL-1β, IL6 in Diabetic Rats

Background and aims

The main purpose of this investigation in Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) on diabetic rats is laser wavelength effect on interleukins: IL-1α, IL-1β, IL6.

Materials Subjects and Methods

At first, diabetes was induced in Wistar rats by streptozotocin (STZ) injection. Then, by intravenous laser therapy, the rats were irradiated by four continuous wave lasers: IR (λ = 808 nm), Red (λ = 638 nm), Green (λ = 532 nm) and Blue (λ= 450 nm) to compare the related laser wavelength effect on different interleukins. The inflammatory parameters were measured 2,6 and 24 hours after laser therapy from blood samples and plotted for different laser wavelengths.

Results

The results show a decrease in all the above parameters by different laser irradiation in comparison to non-radiated diabetic control ones. More importantly with constant laser energy as the laser wavelength decreases, it affects more efficiently on lowering the above parameters.

Conclusions

we can conclude from our data on diabetic rats that in intravenous LLLT, with constant laser energy, shorter wavelengths like Blue (λ= 450 nm) is more effective than longer wavelengths such as Red (λ = 638 nm) and IR (λ = 808 nm) lasers to lower the level of interleukins toward non-diabetic ones.

Soap-film flow induced by electric fields in asymmetric frames

Net fluid flow of soap films induced by (ac or dc) electric fields in asymmetric frames is presented. Previous experiments of controllable soap film flow required the simultaneous use of an electrical current passing through the film and an external electric field or the use of nonuniform ac electric fields. Here a single voltage difference generates both the electrical current going through the film and the electric field that actuates on the charge induced on the film. The film is set into global motion due to the broken symmetry that appears by the use of asymmetric frames. If symmetric frames are used, the film flow is not steady but time dependent and irregular. Finally, we study numerically these film flows by employing the model of charge induction in ohmic liquids.

Acoustical gas-leak detection in the presence of multiple reflections, dispersion, and uncorrelated noise using optimized residual complexity

Precise acoustical leak detection calls for robust time-delay estimates, which minimize the probability of false alarms in the face of dispersive propagation, multiple reflections, and uncorrelated background noise. Providing evidence that higher order modes and multi-reflected signals behave like sets of correlated noise, this work uses a regression model to optimize residual complexity in the presence of both correlated and uncorrelated noise. This optimized residual complexity (ORC) is highly robust since it takes into account both the level and complexity of noise. The lower complexity of the dispersive modes and multiple reflections, compared to the complexity of the plane mode, points to the robustness of ORC against multiple reflections and dispersion. Experimental investigations using recorded sounds of gas leaking from a pipe confirm the robustness of ORC against multiple reflections. Numerical simulations also show robustness against dispersive modes, even when they disturb the linearity of the cross-spectrum phase. Comparisons with other methods-mutual information, cross correlation, and residual complexity-underline the general advantages of ORC in terms of robustness in the presence of reflection and dispersion, against both correlated and uncorrelated noise, and to short signals.

Theory of the liquid film motor

The liquid film motor is a freely suspended liquid film placed between two capacitively coupled plates that rotates when an electric current is passed through it. Here we propose a theory for its rotation mechanism based on thin film electroconvection. The capacitively coupled plates induce free charges on the surfaces of the film, and the electric field on the film exerts a force that induces rotation. Results of the proposed theory and simulation are in good agreement with the experiments in different properties of the liquid film motor.

A Comparison of Laser-Ultrasound Detection System Sensitivity with a Broad-Band Ultrasonic Source for Biomedical Applications

BACKGROUND

Laser ultrasound detection systems are used for noninvasive imaging of internal structures and function of soft tissues. The detection systems with a high sensitivity can be used for detecting small tumors located deeply in human tissues, such as the breast. In this study, the sensitivity of existing ultrasonic detection systems has been compared experimentally by using thermoelastic waves as a broadband ultrasonic source.

METHODS

For the comparison, an optical stress transducer, a polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) sheet and a calibrated PVDF needle hydrophone were used. To ensure that all detection systems were interrogated by the same ultrasonic field, a small optical instrument was constructed to fix the generating laser head. The sensitivity was evaluated by measuring signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and noise equivalent pressures (NEPs).

RESULTS

The PVDF system, with a 4 kPa NEP, has a 22-dB better performance than the optical stress transducer. The optical stress transducer showed nearly the same sensitivity as the hydrophone for detecting ultrasound waves at a 1-cm distance.

CONCLUSIONS

PVDF detection system provides a useful tool for imaging of soft tissues because of its high sensitivity and broadband detection range.
