Abstract
The U.S. Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is a state-of-the-art neutron scattering facility delivering the world's most intense pulsed neutron beams to a wide array of instruments, which are used to conduct investigations in many fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, material science, and biology. Neutrons are produced by spallation of liquid Hg by the bombardment of short (∼1 µs), intense (∼35 A) pulses of protons delivered at 60 Hz by an accumulator ring which is fed by a high-intensity, 1 GeV, H- LINAC (linear accelerator). This facility has operated nearly continuously since 2006 but has recently undergone a 4-month maintenance period, which featured a complete replacement of the 2.5 MeV injector feeding the LINAC. The new injector was developed at ORNL in an off-line beam test facility and consists of an ion source, low energy beam transport, and a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). This report first describes the installed configuration of the new injector detailing the ion source system. The first beam current, RFQ transmission, emittance, and energy measurements from the injector installed on the SNS are reported. These data not only show a significant performance improvement for our existing facility but will also make accessible the higher beam current requirements for future SNS upgrade projects: the proton power upgrade and second target station.

Abstract
We performed scanning gate microscopy measurements on an InAs nanowire at T = 4.2 K in an external magnetic field. We visualizeded non-thermalized electrons passed under narrow metallic contact. It was found that, for such kind of electrons, suppression of the weak antilocalization quantum correction occurs with a magnetic field at least three times smaller than the corresponding one measured for the whole electronic system of the wire.

Abstract
We observed a remarkable improvement of domain wall (DW) mobility, DW velocity, giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect and magnetic softening at appropriate stress-annealing conditions. Beneficial effect of stress-annealing on GMI effect and DW dynamics is associated with the induced transverse magnetic anisotropy. An improvement of the circumferential permeability in the nearly surface area of metallic nucleus is evidenced from observed magnetic softening and remarkable GMI effect rising. We assumed that the outer domain shell with transverse magnetic anisotropy associated to stress-annealing induced transverse magnetic anisotropy affects the travelling DW in a similar way as application of transversal bias magnetic field allowing enhancement the DW velocity. Observed decreasing of the half-width of the EMF peak in stress-annealed microwires can be associated to the decreasing of the characteristic DW width. Consequently, stress annealing enabled us to design the magnetic anisotropy distribution beneficial for optimization of either GMI effect or DW dynamics.

Abstract
There is a pressing need for improving of the high-frequency magneto-impedance effect of cost-effective soft magnetic materials for use in high-performance sensing devices. The impact of the stress-annealing on magnetic properties and high frequency impedance of Fe-rich glass-coated microwires was studied. Hysteresis loops of Fe-rich microwires have been considerably affected by stress- annealing. In stress-annealed Fe- rich microwire we obtained drastic decreasing of coercivity and change of character of hysteresis loop from rectangular to linear. By controlling stress-annealing conditions (temperature and time) we achieved drastic increasing (by order of magnitude) of giant magnetoimpedance ratio. Coercivity, remanent magnetization, diagonal and of-diagonal magnetoimpedance effect of Fe-rich microwires can be tuned by stress-annealing conditions: annealing temperature and time. Observed experimental results are discussed considering relaxation of internal stresses, compressive "back-stresses" arising after stress annealing and topological short range ordering.

Abstract
We have studied magnetic and structural properties of the Heusler-type Ni-Mn-Ga glass-coated microwires prepared by Tailor-Ulitovsky technique. As-prepared sample presents magnetoresistance effect and considerable dependence of magnetization curves (particularly magnetization values) on magnetic field attributed to the magnetic and atomic disorder. Annealing strongly affects the temperature dependence of magnetization and Curie temperature of microwires. After annealing of the microwires at 973 K, the Curie temperature was enhanced to about 280 K which is beneficial for the magnetic solid state refrigeration. The observed hysteretic anomalies on the temperature dependences of resistance and magnetization in the as-prepared and annealed samples are produced by the martensitic transformation. The magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric effects have been investigated to illustrate a potential technological capability of studied microwires.

Abstract
We report on magnetotransport measurements at [Formula: see text] K in a high-quality InAs nanowire ([Formula: see text] kΩ) in the presence of the charged tip of an atomic force microscope serving as a mobile gate. We demonstrate the crucial role of the external magnetic field on the amplitude of the charge density waves with a wavelength of 0.8 μm. The observed suppression rate of their amplitude is similar or slightly higher than the one for weak localization correction in our investigated InAs nanowire.

Abstract
We report on a manipulator based on a two-probe atomic force microscope (AFM) with an individual feedback system for each probe. This manipulator works under an upright optical microscope with 3 mm focal distance. The design of the microscope helps us tomanipulate nanowires using the microscope probes as a two-prong fork. The AFM feedback is realized based on the dynamic full-time contact mode. The applications of the manipulator and advantages of its two-probe design are presented.

Abstract
The heating properties of Fe71.7Si11B13.4Nb3Ni0.9 amorphous glass-coated microwires are explored for prospective applications in magnetic hyperthermia. We show that a single 5 mm long wire is able to produce a sufficient amount of heat, with the specific loss power (SLP) reaching a value as high as 521 W/g for an AC field of 700 Oe and a frequency of 310 kHz. The large SLP is attributed to the rectangular hysteresis loop resulting from a peculiar domain structure of the microwire. For an array of parallel microwires, we have observed an SLP improvement by one order of magnitude; 950 W/g for an AC field of 700 Oe. The magnetostatic interaction strength essential in the array of wires can be manipulated by varying the distance between the wires, showing a decreasing trend in SLP with increasing wire separation. The largest SLP is obtained when the wires are aligned along the direction of the AC field. The origin of the large SLP and relevant heating mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract
The dense packing of two dimensional flakes by van der Waals forces has enabled the creation of new metamaterials with desirable optical properties. Here we assemble graphene oxide sheets into a three dimensional metamaterial using a microfluidic technique and confirm their ordering via measurements of ellipsometric parameters, polarized optical microscopy, polarized transmission spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. We show that the produced metamaterials demonstrate strong in-plane optical anisotropy (Δn≈0.3 at n≈1.5-1.8) combined with low absorption (k<0.1) and compare them with as-synthesized samples of graphene oxide paper. Our results pave the way for engineered birefringent metamaterials on the basis of two dimensional atomic crystals including graphene and its derivatives.

Abstract
We report a method of imaging of the magnetization reversal process using analysis of real-time images of magnetic domain structures in cylindrically shaped microwires. This method uses wide-field polarizing optical microscopy and is based on the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). The aperture diaphragm in MOKE microscope was used to control the incident angles of the light rays that reached the non-planar surface of the microwire and also determined the MOKE geometries. The movement of the non-central position of the hole in this diaphragm leads to a change in the orientation of the plane of incidence of the light along the perpendicular or the parallel direction to the axial direction of the wire. The visualization of the surface magnetic domain structures is obtained using polar and longitudinal MOKE geometries. The hysteresis loops were obtained by plotting the averaged image contrast as a function of the external magnetic field. The separation of the all-magnetization components is performed using different MOKE geometries in a microscope. We demonstrate the use of vector magnetometry to analyze the orientation of the magnetization in a cylindrically shaped microwire under the influence of an external magnetic field.

Abstract
We performed measurements at helium temperatures of the electronic transport in an InAs quantum wire (R(wire) ∼ 30 kΩ) in the presence of a charged tip of an atomic force microscope serving as a mobile gate. The period and the amplitude of the observed quasi-periodic oscillations are investigated in detail as a function of electron concentration in the linear and non-linear regime. We demonstrate the influence of the tip-to-sample distance on the ability to locally affect the top subband electrons as well as the electrons in the disordered sea. Furthermore, we introduce a new method of detection of the subband occupation in an InAs wire, which allows us to evaluate the number of electrons in the conductive band of the wire.

Abstract
We report on studies of domain wall propagation of magnetically-bistable Fe-Co-rich microwires paying attention on the effect of applied and internal stresses. We measured magnetic domain propagation in various magnetic Fe-Co-rich amorphous microwires with metallic nucleus diameters (from 2.8 microm to 18 microm) using Sixtus Tonks-like experiments. We found that application of applied stresses and increasing of internal stresses result in decreasing of domain wall (DW) velocity. We assume that in order to achieve higher DW propagation velocity at the same magnetic field and enhanced DW mobility, special attention should be paid to the decrease of magnetoelastic energy.

Abstract
We deal with the influence of the applied stress on the domain wall velocity in glass-coated magnetic microwires. In general, the domain wall velocity decreases with the applied tensile stress. Four regimes of the domain wall dynamics appear: (1) diffusion-damped, (2) a regime with variable domain wall width, (3) a viscous and (4) a vortex regime. Detailed analysis of domain wall parameters shows that the structural relaxation plays an important role even at ambient temperatures if high tensile stress is present. At higher fields (viscous regime), the most important damping arises from magnetic relaxation of magnetic moments. Finally, the domain wall velocity steeply increases (reaching a maximum at 7000 m s(-1)) in the vortex regime and so does the domain wall mobility.

Abstract
It is widely assumed that the dominant source of scattering in graphene is charged impurities in a substrate. We have tested this conjecture by studying graphene placed on various substrates and in high-kappa media. Unexpectedly, we have found no significant changes in carrier mobility either for different substrates or by using glycerol, ethanol, and water as a top dielectric layer. This suggests that Coulomb impurities are not the scattering mechanism that limits the mean free path attainable for graphene on a substrate.

Abstract
We report on the fabrication, and structural and magnetic characterization of Cu(63)Fe(37) microwires with granular structure produced by rapid quenching, using the Tailor-Ulitovsky method, from the immiscible alloys. X-ray diffraction study demonstrated that the structure consists of small (6-45 nm) crystallites of Cu and body centred cubic α-Fe. Magnetic properties have been measured in the range of 5-300 K using a SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) magnetometer. The temperature dependences of the magnetization measured in a cooling regime when no external magnetic field is applied (zero-field cooling) and in the presence of the field (field cooling) show considerable difference below 20 K. This difference could be related to the presence of small α-Fe grains embedded in the Cu matrix. Those α-Fe grains appear to be blocked at temperatures below that at which the maximum of the magnetization is observed in the low temperature range. Significant magnetoresistance (about 7%) has been found in the samples studied. The shape of the observed dependences is typical of a giant magnetoresistance effect.

Abstract
We report on a quantum dot laser having an emission spectrum as broad as 74.9 nm at 25 degrees C in the 1.2-1.28 wavelength interval with a total pulsed output power of 750 mW in single lateral mode regime and the average spectral power density of >10 mW/nm. A significant overlap and approximate equalization of the ground-state and the excited-state emission bands in the laser's spectrum is achieved by means of intentional inhomogeneous broadening of the quantum dot energy levels.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to undertake a complex of studies of structural transformations in the anterior thoracic ganglia of the sympathetic trunk and the thoracic part of the vagus nerve after acute and chronic gravitational overloading (GOL). Studies were performed on 28 white mongrel male rats aged 8-21 weeks. Animals of series I (acute GOL) were rotated in a centrifuge on one day (three rotation sessions with two 20-min breaks, giving a total rotation time of 31 min). Animals of series II (chronic GOL) were rotated in an alternating two-week regime for 13 weeks (total rotation time 20 h 9 min). Rotation was performed in the craniocaudal direction with overloads of 4-6 g. Intact rats served as controls. Histological, electron microscopic, and morphometric analyses were performed. Acute GOL produced mainly reversible reactive changes in the anterior thoracic nodes of the sympathetic trunk and thoracic part of the vagus nerve, probably induced by unusual combinations of afferent spike activity of unusual strength, this probably being one of the causes of impairments seen after rotation. Chronic GOL was followed by the development of mainly destructive and compensatory-adaptive processes, characterized by the destruction of mitochondrial cristae, vacuolization of neuron cytoplasm, and degradation of interneuronal synapses. These changes were probably due to the development of hypoxia, which leads to interneuronal synaptic blockade in sympathetic ganglia. These structural transformations demonstrate the involvement of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic compartments in responses to acute and chronic GOL, providing evidence of the generalization of adaptive processes in the autonomic nervous system.

Abstract
We report a superlattice parametric oscillator (SPO), with a GaAs/AlAs superlattice as the active element. The SPO was pumped by a microwave field (power 4 mW) and produced third harmonic radiation at subterahertz frequencies (near 300 GHz; 0.1 mW). We attribute the parametric gain to the nonlinearity of the miniband transport.

Abstract
The aim of this work was the complex study of structural modifications in the anterior thoracic ganglia of the sympathetic trunk and in thoracic region of vagus after acute and chronic exposure to gravitational overloads (GO). The study was carried out in 28 albino outbred male rats aged 8-21 weeks. Animals of group I (acute exposure) were rotated in the centrifuge during one day (3 rotations with 2 20-min breaks; total exposure duration was equal to 31 min. Animals of group II (chronic exposure) were treated intermittently during 2-weeks-long periods for 13 weeks; total exposure duration was equal to 20 hours 9 min. Gravitation was applied in cranio-caudal direction with the overload of 4-6 gravitational units. Intact rats served as a control. Material was studied using histological, electron microscopic and morphometric methods. The study of the sympathetic trunk and thoracic ganglia following acute GO have revealed mainly the reactive and reversible changes, probably caused by the appearance of an afferent impulsation of unusual intensity and combination, which is one of the reasons of the disturbances, observed after rotation. Following chronic GO, destructive and compensatory-adaptive changes prevailed; these were characterized by the mitochondrial cristae destruction, vacuolization of neuronal cytoplasm, destruction of interneuronal synapses. These changes, were probably, the result of hypoxia leading to the development of interneuronal synaptic block in sympathetic ganglia. The structural modifications described are indicative of the involvement of both sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the autonomic nervous system in the response to acute and chronic GO, suggesting the generalization of the adaptation processes in the autonomic nervous system after GO.

Abstract
The novel experimental realization of three-level optical quantum systems is presented. We use the polarization state of biphotons to generate a specific sequence of states that are used in the extended version of four-state QKD protocol quantum key distribution protocol. We experimentally verify the orthogonality of the basic states and demonstrate the ability to easily switch between them. The tomography procedure is employed to reconstruct the density matrices of generated states.

Abstract
The amazing climbing ability of geckos has attracted the interest of philosophers and scientists alike for centuries. However, only in the past few years has progress been made in understanding the mechanism behind this ability, which relies on submicrometre keratin hairs covering the soles of geckos. Each hair produces a miniscule force approximately 10(-7) N (due to van der Waals and/or capillary interactions) but millions of hairs acting together create a formidable adhesion of approximately 10 N x cm(-2): sufficient to keep geckos firmly on their feet, even when upside down on a glass ceiling. It is very tempting to create a new type of adhesive by mimicking the gecko mechanism. Here we report on a prototype of such 'gecko tape' made by microfabrication of dense arrays of flexible plastic pillars, the geometry of which is optimized to ensure their collective adhesion. Our approach shows a way to manufacture self-cleaning, re-attachable dry adhesives, although problems related to their durability and mass production are yet to be resolved.

Abstract
Using a sensitive torque magnetometer we have studied magnetization curves for untwinned overdoped YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals in fields of up to 28 T. We demonstrate the existence of history effects below the lower critical point and provide a full demarcation of the Bragg-glass phase. A pronounced symmetry is observed in the behavior of the phase lines, irreversible magnetization, and value of the magnetization jump near both critical points.

Abstract
Regulation of the CYP1A1 gene has been shown to involve the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and the CYP1A1 gene expression is induced by AhR ligands. Primaquine is an antimalarial agent that does not exhibit the structural properties of a classical AhR ligand. We have evaluated the mechanisms by which this compound induces CYP1A1 expression using rat hepatoma H4IIE cells and V79 cells stably expressing CYP1A1. In H4IIE cells, primaquine caused a time- and dose-dependent increase of CYP1A1 mRNA and protein expression. The transcriptional activation of the CYP1A1 gene by primaquine was strictly XRE-dependent, as shown by transfection of different CYP1A1 pGL3 reporter constructs in H4IIE cells, and the involvement of the AhR was shown by activation of a Gal4-AhR hybrid protein by primaquine in transfected cells. Furthermore, primaquine caused transformation of the cytosolic AhR to a DNA-binding form, in vitro, suggesting that primaquine directly activates the receptor complex. In addition to its action at the transcriptional level, primaquine caused a dose-dependent inhibition of CYP1A1 degradation with an IC(50) of 3.3 , as seen in mammalian V79 cells. This was not due to the lysosomotropic activity of the drug since other lysosomotropic agents were ineffective. Primaquine formed a type II binding spectrum with CYP1A1 and inhibited the CYP1A1-dependent ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase activity in vitro with a K(i) of 1.3 microM, which is close to the IC(50), suggesting that the drug protects CYP1A1 from degradation by binding at the active site. It is concluded that CYP1A1 is regulated by primaquine both on the transcriptional as well as on a post-translational level.

Abstract
We report on transport measurements of YBa 2Cu 3O (7-delta) single crystals with different oxygen contents in the geometry B, J ||ab (J perpendicularB). Our data show that the vortices become confined between the Cu-O planes below a well-defined temperature at which the effective size 2xi of the vortex core is approximately equal to the period of the Cu-O layers. This confinement strongly increases the vortex liquid freezing temperature. A new melting line is found separating a vortex liquid and a smectic phase, which shows an oscillatory field dependence reflecting differences between commensurate and incommensurate smectic states.

Abstract
We report a direct experimental observation and provide a theory of the distribution of trajectories along which a fluctuating system moves over a potential barrier in escape from a metastable state. The experimental results are obtained for a semiconductor laser with optical feedback. The distribution of paths displays a distinct peak, which shows how the escaping system is most likely to move. We argue that the specific features of this distribution may give an insight into the nature of dropout events in lasers.

Abstract
Ethanol-inducible cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) involved in the metabolism of gluconeogenetic precursors and some cytotoxins is distinguished from other cytochrome P450 enzymes by its rapid turnover (in vivo half-life of 4-7 h), with ligands to the haem iron, both substrates and inhibitors, stabilizing the protein. CYP2E1 is also known to have a high oxidase activity in the absence of substrate, resulting in the production of reactive oxygen radicals. We suggested that the rapid intracellular turnover of the enzyme may be partly due to covalent modifications by such radicals or to other changes during catalytic cycling, in which case the inhibition of electron supply from NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase would be expected to stabilize the protein. Fao hepatoma cells, where CYP2E1 showed a half-life of 4 h upon serum withdrawal, were treated for 1 h with 0.3 microM diphenylene iodonium (DPI), a suicide inhibitor of flavoenzymes, which resulted in approximately 90% inhibition of the microsomal NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase and CYP2E1-dependent chlorzoxazone hydroxylase activities. Subsequent cycloheximide chase revealed that the CYP2E1 half-life increased to 26 h. Neither the degradation rates of total protein, CYP2B1 and NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase nor the cellular ATP level were affected by DPI under the conditions employed. These results demonstrate for the first time that the short half-life of CYP2E1 in vivo may be largely due to the rapid destabilization of the enzyme during catalytic cycling rather than to the intrinsic instability of the protein molecule.

Abstract
Cytochrome P-450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is characterized by a rapid turnover in the liver and some cell lines and the ability of substrates and heme iron ligands to inhibit significantly enzyme degradation. In the Fao hepatoma cell line, CYP2E1 was found to be fairly stable (half-life of 26 h), but serum withdrawal resulted in its rapid disappearance from the microsomal fraction (half-life of about 7 h) as evaluated using cycloheximide chase. The effect of serum withdrawal could be partially reversed by the addition of albumin to the culture medium, whereas insulin and the insulin-like growth factor IGF-I had no additional effect. The effect of serum withdrawal was specific for CYP2E1 since (a) no concomitant fast degradation of CYP2B1 and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase was observed and (b) the CYP2E1 ligands ethanol and imidazole prevented the fast degradation of the enzyme. The lysosomotropic agent ammonium chloride and the inhibitor of autophagocytosis 3-methyladenine slowed down CYP2E1 degradation by about 30%, while leupeptin had no effect. Under the same conditions, the degradation of total long-lived cell protein showed the same sensitivity to ammonium chloride, but was significantly less sensitive to 3-methyladenine and serum and not sensitive to ethanol and imidazole. CYP2E1 degradation was inhibited by combined treatment with brefeldin A and nocodazole, which blocks both anterograde and retrograde vesicular transport between endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. The data point to the existence of a selective mechanism for the degradation of membrane proteins in serum-deprived cells in addition to nonselective autophagocytosis. The selective degradation of CYP2E1 may be attained by means of its selective vesicular transport to an acidic post-endoplasmic reticulum compartment.

Abstract
Hepsin, a putative cell-surface serine proteinase, has been isolated from the microsomal membranes of rat liver and purified to homogeneity by hydroxyapatite, DEAE-Sepharose, and benzamidine-Sepharose chromatography. The course of purification was monitored using antibodies raised against a 20-mer peptide at the C-terminus of rat hepsin, and the identity of the purified protein was confirmed by partial amino-acid sequencing. A single-chain precursor of ca. 50 kDa found in the microsomes underwent spontaneous maturation in the course of purification so that the last, affinity chromatography, step recovered only the mature form which dissociated to subunits of 31 and 19 kDa under reducing SDS-PAGE. Proteinase digestion experiments with microsomal vesicles are consistent with the luminal orientation of the precursor C-terminus, which would result in its extracellular orientation upon transportation to the cell surface. [3H]diisopropylfluorophosphate covalently binds to the large subunit showing it to be the catalytic one. The N-terminal sequencing of this subunit demonstrates that the zymogen is converted to the active serine proteinase by cleavage at the Arg161-Ile162 site. Activity measurements with short synthetic peptides show that the enzyme cleaves after basic amino-acid residues, Arg being preferable to Lys. The inhibition pattern is typical of trypsin-like serine proteinases. The pH-dependence of activity within the range pH 6-9 has no maximum, the activity increasing continuously with pH. These results are consistent with the earlier predictions based on hepsin amino-acid sequence and elucidate the specificity and other earlier unknown enzymatic and molecular properties of the enzyme.
