Abstract
ECG classification or heartbeat classification is an extremely valuable tool in cardiology. Deep learning-based techniques for the analysis of ECG signals assist human experts in the timely diagnosis of cardiac diseases and help save precious lives. This research aims at digitizing a dataset of images of ECG records into time series signals and then applying deep learning (DL) techniques on the digitized dataset. State-of-the-art DL techniques are proposed for the classification of the ECG signals into different cardiac classes. Multiple DL models, including a convolutional neural network (CNN), a long short-term memory (LSTM) network, and a self-supervised learning (SSL)-based model using autoencoders are explored and compared in this study. The models are trained on the dataset generated from ECG plots of patients from various healthcare institutes in Pakistan. First, the ECG images are digitized, segmenting the lead II heartbeats, and then the digitized signals are passed to the proposed deep learning models for classification. Among the different DL models used in this study, the proposed CNN model achieves the highest accuracy of ∼92%. The proposed model is highly accurate and provides fast inference for real-time and direct monitoring of ECG signals that are captured from the electrodes (sensors) placed on different parts of the body. Using the digitized form of ECG signals instead of images for the classification of cardiac arrhythmia allows cardiologists to utilize DL models directly on ECG signals from an ECG machine for the real-time and accurate monitoring of ECGs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the association between carotid artery tortuosity and internal carotid artery atherosclerosis. This study sought to evaluate the associations between various types of arterial tortuosity and vulnerable plaque components on magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective review was completed of 102 patients who had undergone MRA neck imaging, with intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) present in one or both cervical internal carotid arteries (ICA). Each ICA was assessed for two categories of tortuosity: variant arterial pathway(s) (retrojugular and/or retropharyngeal) and abnormal curvature (kinks, loops, and/or coils). All ICA plaques were assessed for the presence or absence of intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH), lipid-rich necrotic core (LRNC), ulceration, and enhancement, as well as the volume of IPH and degree of luminal stenosis. RESULTS The mean age of included patients was 73.5 years (SD = 9.0 years) and 88 (86.3%) subjects were male. The left carotid plaque was significantly more likely to have IPH (68.6% vs. 47.1%; p = 0.02). The left ICA was more likely to have a retrojugular course (22% vs. 9.9%; p = 0.002) and any variant arterial course (26.5% versus 14.67%, p = 0.01). On the right there was an association between the presence of a LRNC and retropharyngeal and/or retrojugular arterial pathway (p = 0.03). On the left there was an association between the presence of any abnormal arterial curvature and IPH volume (p = 0.03). Neither association met the adjusted statistical threshold after Bonferroni correction, with alpha set at 0.0028. CONCLUSION ICA tortuosity is not associated with carotid artery plaque composition, and likely does not play a role in the development of high-risk plaques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Embolization of the middle meningeal artery (MMA) is a promising minimally invasive technique that is gaining traction in the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma. Unfortunately, the human meninges and associated arteries are significantly larger than those of conventional laboratory animals, making the development of a clinically relevant animal model for testing of embolization agents elusive. OBJECTIVE To introduce the posterior intercostal artery (PIA) model in swine and provide anatomical, angiographic, histological, and procedural data to validate its relevance in modeling the human MMA. METHODS In human cadaveric specimens, 3D angiograms of the internal maxillary arteries (n=6) were obtained and the dura with MMA were harvested and histologically processed. Angiographic and histologic data of the human MMA were compared with the swine PIA (three animals). Then, embolization of the PIA (n=48 arteries) was conducted with liquid embolization agent (Onyx, Medtronic), and angiographic and histological results were assessed acutely (four animals) and after 30 days (two animals). RESULTS The human MMA has equivalent diameter, length, branching pattern, 3D trajectory, and wall structure to those of swine PIAs. Each swine has 12 to 14 PIAs (6-7 per side) suitable for acute or chronic embolization, which can be performed with high fidelity using the same devices, agents, and techniques currently used to embolize the MMA. The arterial wall structure and the acute and chronic histological findings in PIAs after embolization are comparable to those of humans. CONCLUSIONS This PIA model in swine could be used for research and development; objective benchmarking of agents, devices, and techniques; and in the training of neurointerventionalists.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) in carotid atherosclerosis demonstrates increased signal on magnetic resonance angiography images. Little remains known about how this signal changes on subsequent examinations. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective observational study was completed of patients that had IPH on a neck MRA between 1/1/2016 and 3/25/2021, defined as ≥ 200 % signal intensity of the sternocleidomastoid muscle on MPRAGE images. Examinations were excluded if the patients had undergone carotid endarterectomy between examinations or had poor quality imaging. IPH volumes were calculated by manually outlining IPH components. Up to 2 subsequent MRAs, if available, were assessed for both the presence and volume of IPH. RESULTS 102 patients were included, of which 90 (86.5 %) were male. IPH was on the right in 48 patients (average volume = 174.0 mm3), and on the left in 70 patients (average volume 186.9 mm3). 22 had at least one follow-up (average 444.7 days between exams), and 6 had two follow-up MRAs (average 489.5 days between exams). On the first follow-up, 19 (86.4 %) plaques had persistent hyperintense signal in the region of IPH. The second follow-up showed persistent signal in 5/6 plaques (88.3 %). Combined volume of IPH from right and left carotid arteries did not significantly decrease on the first follow-up exam (p = 0.08). CONCLUSIONS IPH usually retains hyperintense signal on follow-up MRAs, possibly representing recurrent hemorrhage or degraded blood products.

Abstract
Introduction:
Embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) is a clinical paradigm that helps to classify and lead investigations into cryptogenic stroke. Diagnostic evaluation of ESUS involves investigating several potential etiologies of stroke. One such etiology includes antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS), a syndrome known to cause hypercoagulability. Clinical characteristics of primary APLS in ESUS have not been described.
Methods:
This is an IRB approved, retrospective study including patients from 2015-2020 who were seen at Mayo Clinic, were diagnosed with ESUS, and had APLS testing (anti-cardiolipin, beta-2 glycoprotein, or lupus anticoagulant). Baseline characteristics and radiographic features were collected and compared between patients who were and were not diagnosed with APLS, as well as between patients who were and were not APLS antibody positive.
Results:
Our study included 206 patients. Positive APLS antibody testing was seen in 21 (10%) patients. Of those patients, 8 (4%) received a formal diagnosis of APLS. Compared to controls, patients with positive APLS antibodies as well as those diagnosed with APLS were more likely to have a history of cancer (20 [11%] APLS antibody negative vs 7 [33%] APLS antibody positive p=0.004) (23 [12%] APLS diagnosis negative vs 4 [50%] APLS diagnosis p=0.002). Mean age in primary APLS was greater, 57 years old APLS antibody negative vs 69 years old APLS antibody positive (p<0.001) and 58 years old APLS diagnosis negative vs 75 years old APLS diagnosis (p=0.001) (Table 1). Regressions analyses examining infarct topography and rate of hemorrhagic transformation were non-significant between groups (p>0.1)
Conclusion:
APLS presenting as ESUS is associated with older age and history of malignancy. We speculate this finding may underscore the need to consider hypercoagulable conditions more broadly in stroke evaluations of older populations. Larger cohorts and longer follow up will be required to validate this observation.

Abstract
Abstract
Aim
Has lockdown and COVID-19 led to a change into the characteristics of DVT's and patients who have them alongside a review of the DVT service.
Method
Data was collected retrospectively from electronic patient records system for the following periods: 1st April until 30th June 2019 and 1st April until 30th June 2020. These were the key months during the first United Kingdom national lockdown. Data was analysed for patient demographics, risk factors, characteristics of the DVT, management and DVT reoccurrence. Statistical analyses were preformed using GraphPad Prism 8.
Results
227 patients sustained community DVT's in 2019 and 211 patients in 2020 during the study period. 13 of these patients in 2020 were COVID-19 positive. There was a difference in gender distribution (p= 0.0128) with 128 males and 99 females in 2019, 93 males and 118 females in 2020. No significant difference was noted for the incidence of thrombophilia with 9 in 2019 and 3 in 2020 (p=0.1437). Fewer long-haul journeys were made (p=0.012) with 16 in 2019 and only 2 in 2020. Fewer patients had immobility as a risk factor with 79 in 2019 and 55 in 2020 (p=0.0494). However, there were more patients using the contraceptive pill (p=0.0086) with 1 in 2019 and 9 in 2020.
Conclusion
There is no significant difference in the characteristics, extent, and management of DVT's prior to and during Lockdown during COVID-19. National Lockdowns do not affect community DVT's however it is important to highlight the surrounding inpatient numbers.

Evaluation of prognostic risk models for postoperative pulmonary complications in adult patients undergoing major abdominal surgery: a systematic review and international external validation cohort study. Lancet Digit Health 2022; 4:e520-e531. Abstract
BACKGROUND Stratifying risk of postoperative pulmonary complications after major abdominal surgery allows clinicians to modify risk through targeted interventions and enhanced monitoring. In this study, we aimed to identify and validate prognostic models against a new consensus definition of postoperative pulmonary complications. METHODS We did a systematic review and international external validation cohort study. The systematic review was done in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We searched MEDLINE and Embase on March 1, 2020, for articles published in English that reported on risk prediction models for postoperative pulmonary complications following abdominal surgery. External validation of existing models was done within a prospective international cohort study of adult patients (≥18 years) undergoing major abdominal surgery. Data were collected between Jan 1, 2019, and April 30, 2019, in the UK, Ireland, and Australia. Discriminative ability and prognostic accuracy summary statistics were compared between models for the 30-day postoperative pulmonary complication rate as defined by the Standardised Endpoints in Perioperative Medicine Core Outcome Measures in Perioperative and Anaesthetic Care (StEP-COMPAC). Model performance was compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROCC). FINDINGS In total, we identified 2903 records from our literature search; of which, 2514 (86·6%) unique records were screened, 121 (4·8%) of 2514 full texts were assessed for eligibility, and 29 unique prognostic models were identified. Nine (31·0%) of 29 models had score development reported only, 19 (65·5%) had undergone internal validation, and only four (13·8%) had been externally validated. Data to validate six eligible models were collected in the international external validation cohort study. Data from 11 591 patients were available, with an overall postoperative pulmonary complication rate of 7·8% (n=903). None of the six models showed good discrimination (defined as AUROCC ≥0·70) for identifying postoperative pulmonary complications, with the Assess Respiratory Risk in Surgical Patients in Catalonia score showing the best discrimination (AUROCC 0·700 [95% CI 0·683-0·717]). INTERPRETATION In the pre-COVID-19 pandemic data, variability in the risk of pulmonary complications (StEP-COMPAC definition) following major abdominal surgery was poorly described by existing prognostication tools. To improve surgical safety during the COVID-19 pandemic recovery and beyond, novel risk stratification tools are required. FUNDING British Journal of Surgery Society.

Abstract
With a constant increase in the number of deployed satellites, it is expected that the current fixed spectrum allocation in satellite communications (SATCOM) will migrate towards more dynamic and flexible spectrum sharing rules. This migration is accelerated due to the introduction of new terrestrial services in bands used by satellite services. Therefore, it is important to design dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) solutions that can maximize spectrum utilization and support coexistence between a high number of satellite and terrestrial networks operating in the same spectrum bands. Several DSS solutions for SATCOM exist, however, they are mainly centralized solutions and might lead to scalability issues with increasing satellite density. This paper describes two distributed DSS techniques for efficient spectrum sharing across multiple satellite systems (geostationary and non-geostationary satellites with earth stations in motion) and terrestrial networks, with a focus on increasing spectrum utilization and minimizing the impact of interference between satellite and terrestrial segments. Two relevant SATCOM use cases have been selected for dynamic spectrum sharing: the opportunistic sharing of satellite and terrestrial systems in (i) downlink Ka-band and (ii) uplink Ka-band. For the two selected use cases, the performance of proposed DSS techniques has been analyzed and compared to static spectrum allocation. Notable performance gains have been obtained.

Abstract
Nowadays, broadband applications that use the licensed spectrum of the cellular network are growing fast. For this reason, Long-Term Evolution-Unlicensed (LTE-U) technology is expected to offload its traffic to the unlicensed spectrum. However, LTE-U transmissions have to coexist with the existing WiFi networks. Most existing coexistence schemes consider coordinated LTE-U and WiFi networks where there is a central coordinator that communicates traffic demand of the co-located networks. However, such a method of WiFi traffic estimation raises the complexity, traffic overhead, and reaction time of the coexistence schemes. In this article, we propose Experience Replay (ER) and Reward selective Experience Replay (RER) based Q-learning techniques as a solution for the coexistence of uncoordinated LTE-U and WiFi networks. In the proposed schemes, the LTE-U deploys a WiFi saturation sensing model to estimate the traffic demand of co-located WiFi networks. We also made a performance comparison between the proposed schemes and other rule-based and Q-learning based coexistence schemes implemented in non-coordinated LTE-U and WiFi networks. The simulation results show that the RER Q-learning scheme converges faster than the ER Q-learning scheme. The RER Q-learning scheme also gives 19.1% and 5.2% enhancement in aggregated throughput and 16.4% and 10.9% enhancement in fairness performance as compared to the rule-based and Q-learning coexistence schemes, respectively.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
NADPH oxidase (NOX) 4-generated H2O2 has anti-atherosclerotic properties in conduit arteries like the aorta and carotids. However, the role of NOX4 on vascular function of small resistance arteries and blood pressure in a mouse model of familial hypercholesterolemia is unknown.
Purpose
We evaluated whether NOX4-generated H2O2 might play a role in perivascular adipose tissue of the thoracic aorta (tPVAT) and small resistance arteries on vascular function in a mouse model of familial hypercholesterolemia.
Methods
Aortic segments and mesenteric arteries from 26-week-old Ldlr−/− and Nox4−/− / Ldlr−/− mice were analysed by Mulvany myograph. In addition, vascular contraction and relaxation was analysed in the presence of L-NAME and catalase. Analysis of mRNA expression was performed in murine and human tissue by quantitative real-time PCR. Blood pressure was detected by tail cuff method in conscious, trained mice.
Results
Loss of NOX4 led to severe endothelial dysfunction in mesenteric arteries of Ldlr−/− mice. Blocking of NO synthases with L-NAME led to decreased endothelial relaxation in Ldlr−/− mice at the level of Nox4−/− / Ldlr−/− mice. However, incubation with L-NAME did not worsen the established endothelial dysfunction of the mesenteric arteries from Nox4−/− / Ldlr−/− mice. These results are strikingly different from the aorta, where inhibition of NO synthases led to a similarly impaired endothelial relaxation in both mouse strains. We detected a similar eNOS expression in the aorta of Ldlr−/− and Nox4−/− / Ldlr−/−, but a reduced eNOS expression in the mesenteric arteries of Nox4−/− / Ldlr−/− mice. H2O2 can induce eNOS expression. Therefore, we analysed the vascular function after catalase incubation and again found a significant reduction of endothelial function in the mesenteric arteries of Ldlr−/− mice. Finally, we analysed blood pressure of these mice and did not observe differences in systolic blood pressure, despite significant differences in endothelial function of resistant arteries.
Conclusion
NOX4 protects against severe endothelial dysfunction in the mesenteric artery in a model of hypercholesterolemia.

Cost-effectiveness of mifepristone and misoprostol versus misoprostol alone for the management of missed miscarriage: an economic evaluation based on the MifeMiso trial. BJOG 2021; 128:1534-1545. [PMID: 33969614 DOI: 10.1111/1471-0528.16737] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Accepted: 04/20/2021] [Indexed: 11/28/2022]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the cost-effectiveness of mifepristone and misoprostol (MifeMiso) compared with misoprostol only for the medical management of a missed miscarriage. DESIGN Within-trial economic evaluation and model-based analysis to set the findings in the context of the wider economic evidence for a range of comparators. Incremental costs and outcomes were calculated using nonparametric bootstrapping and reported using cost-effectiveness acceptability curves. Analyses were performed from the perspective of the UK's National Health Service (NHS). SETTING Twenty-eight UK NHS early pregnancy units. SAMPLE A cohort of 711 women aged 16-39 years with ultrasound evidence of a missed miscarriage. METHODS Treatment with mifepristone and misoprostol or with matched placebo and misoprostol tablets. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Cost per additional successfully managed miscarriage and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). RESULTS For the within-trial analysis, MifeMiso intervention resulted in an absolute effect difference of 6.6% (95% CI 0.7-12.5%) per successfully managed miscarriage and a QALYs difference of 0.04% (95% CI -0.01 to 0.1%). The average cost per successfully managed miscarriage was lower in the MifeMiso arm than in the placebo and misoprostol arm, with a cost saving of £182 (95% CI £26-£338). Hence, the MifeMiso intervention dominated the use of misoprostol alone. The model-based analysis showed that the MifeMiso intervention is preferable, compared with expectant management, and this is the current medical management strategy. However, the model-based evidence suggests that the intervention is a less effective but less costly strategy than surgical management. CONCLUSIONS The within-trial analysis found that based on cost-effectiveness grounds, the MifeMiso intervention is likely to be recommended by decision makers for the medical management of women presenting with a missed miscarriage. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT The combination of mifepristone and misoprostol is more effective and less costly than misoprostol alone for the management of missed miscarriages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the cost-effectiveness of progesterone compared with placebo in preventing pregnancy loss in women with early pregnancy vaginal bleeding. DESIGN Economic evaluation alongside a large multi-centre randomised placebo-controlled trial. SETTING Forty-eight UK NHS early pregnancy units. POPULATION Four thousand one hundred and fifty-three women aged 16-39 years with bleeding in early pregnancy and ultrasound evidence of an intrauterine sac. METHODS An incremental cost-effectiveness analysis was performed from National Health Service (NHS) and NHS and Personal Social Services perspectives. Subgroup analyses were carried out on women with one or more and three or more previous miscarriages. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Cost per additional live birth at ≥34 weeks of gestation. RESULTS Progesterone intervention led to an effect difference of 0.022 (95% CI -0.004 to 0.050) in the trial. The mean cost per woman in the progesterone group was £76 (95% CI -£559 to £711) more than the mean cost in the placebo group. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio for progesterone compared with placebo was £3305 per additional live birth. For women with at least one previous miscarriage, progesterone was more effective than placebo with an effect difference of 0.055 (95% CI 0.014-0.096) and this was associated with a cost saving of £322 (95% CI -£1318 to £673). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that progesterone is associated with a small positive impact and a small additional cost. Both subgroup analyses were more favourable, especially for women who had one or more previous miscarriages. Given available evidence, progesterone is likely to be a cost-effective intervention, particularly for women with previous miscarriage(s). TWEETABLE ABSTRACT Progesterone treatment is likely to be cost-effective in women with early pregnancy bleeding and a history of miscarriage.

Protective role of diosmin against testosterone propionate-induced prostatic hyperplasia in Wistar rats: Plausible role of oxidative stress and inflammation. Hum Exp Toxicol 2019; 39:1133-1146. Abstract
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an important key health concern for aging men. Polyphenolic compounds have been found to possess important roles in the inhibition of numerous ailments that involve reactive oxygen species and inflammation. Diosmin is a citrus flavone that possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and anticancer activities, so based on these properties of diosmin, we decided to evaluate its effect on testosterone propionate (TP)-induced BPH. A total of 30 Wistar rats were randomly assigned to five groups having six animals in each. This study was of 28 days in which TP (5 mg kg−1) was administered to induce BPH in the last 10 days of the study. It was found that diosmin at the doses of 20 and 40 mg kg−1significantly reduced malondialdehyde and xanthine oxidase formation in a dose-dependent manner; however, it replenished catalase, glutathione (GSH), and GSH-dependent enzymes, that is, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione- S-transferase significantly against TP-induced BPH. Further, immunohistochemical study showed that diosmin alleviated inflammatory markers (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells, cyclooxygenase-2, and interleukin-6). It was also found that diosmin downregulated the expression of androgen receptor and decreased the prostate-specific antigen concentration dose-dependently, significantly against TP-induced BPH. Diosmin also restored histoarchitecture of the prostate in a dose-dependent manner. Findings from the present study revealed the protective role of diosmin against TP-induced BPH in Wistar rats.

Abstract
Abstract
Background/Introduction
Physical activity is one of the most potent strategies to prevent endothelial dysfunction. Recent evidence indicates vaso-protective properties of H2O2 produced by main endothelial NADPH oxidase isoform 4 (Nox4) in the vasculature.
Purpose
Therefore, we hypothesized that Nox4 connects physical activity with vaso-protective effects.
Methods and results
Analysis of endothelial function by Mulvany myograph showed endothelial dysfunction in wild-type as well as in Nox4−/− mice after 20 weeks on high-fat diet. Access to voluntary running wheels during high-fat diet prevented endothelial dysfunction in wild-type but not in Nox4−/− mice. Mechanistically, exercise led to increased H2O2 release in the aorta of wild-type mice with increased phosphorylation of eNOS pathway member AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (Akt1), subsequently. Both effects were diminished in aortas of Nox4−/− mice. Deletion of Nox4 also led to decreased capacity for intracellular calcium release and reduced phenylephrine-mediated contraction, whereas potassium-induced contraction was unaffected. H2O2 scavenger catalase reduced phenylephrine-contraction in wild-type mice. Supplementation of H2O2 increased phenylephrine-induced contraction in Nox4−/− mice. Exercise induced key regulator of mitochondria biogenesis peroxisome proliferative activated receptor gamma, coactivator 1 alpha (Ppargc1a) in wild-type but not Nox4−/− mice. Furthermore, exercise induced citrate synthase activity and reduced mitochondria mass in the absence of Nox4. Thus, Nox4−/− mice became less active and ran less compared with wild-type mice.
Conclusions
Nox4 derived H2O2 plays a key role in exercise-induced adaptations of eNOS and Ppargc1a pathway and intracellular calcium release. Hence, loss of Nox4 diminished physical activity performance and vascular protective effects of exercise.

Abstract
Mesh networks enable a many-to-many relation between nodes, which means that each node in the network can communicate with every other node using multi-hop communication and path diversity. As it enables the fast roll-out of sensor and actuator networks, it is an important aspect within the Internet of Things (IoT). Utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) as an underlying technology to implement such mesh networks has gained a lot of interest in recent years. The result was a variety of BLE meshing solutions that were not interoperable because of the lack of a common standard. This has changed recently with the advent of the Bluetooth Mesh standard. However, a detailed overview of how this standard operates, performs and how it tackles other issues concerning BLE mesh networking is missing. Therefore, this paper investigates this new technology thoroughly and evaluates its performance by means of three approaches, namely an experimental evaluation, a statistical approach and a graph-based simulation model, which can be used as the basis for future research. Apart from showing that consistent results are achieved by means of all three approaches, we also identify possible drawbacks and open issues that need to be dealt with.

Abstract
Benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) is an environmental pollutant which causes various lung toxicities. The present study was designed to evaluate the protective effects of carvacrol, a monoterpenic phenol against B(a)P-induced lung toxicity. In this study, Swiss albino mice were pretreated with carvacrol (25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) orally for 7 consecutive days before administering oral B(a)P (125 mg/kg). Preventive efficacy of carvacrol was assessed in terms of membrane oxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities, histopathological changes, and inflammatory (iNOS, NF-κB, and COX-2) markers. Carvacrol pretreatment in the two doses restored B(a)P-induced lipid peroxidation and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Protein expressions of iNOS, NF-κB, and COX-2 in the lung tissue were found to be upregulated by B(a)P. Carvacrol treatment, however, downregulated their expressions by decreasing the marker of positive stained cells and restored the histopathological architecture of lung tissue. Our results suggest that carvacrol can be used as a protective agent against B(a)P-induced lung toxicity and inflammation.

Abstract
On the road towards 5G, a proliferation of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) is expected. Sensor networks are of great importance in this new wireless era, as they allow interaction with the environment. Additionally, the establishment of the Internet of Things (IoT) has incredibly increased the number of interconnected devices and consequently the already massive wirelessly transmitted traffic. The exponential growth of wireless traffic is pushing the wireless community to investigate solutions that maximally exploit the available spectrum. Recently, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) announced standards that permit the operation of Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the unlicensed spectrum in addition to the exclusive use of the licensed spectrum owned by a mobile operator. Alternatively, leading wireless technology developers examine standalone LTE operation in the unlicensed spectrum without any involvement of a mobile operator. In this article, we present a classification of different techniques that can be applied on co-located LTE and Wi-Fi networks. Up to today, Wi-Fi is the most widely-used wireless technology in the unlicensed spectrum. A review of the current state of the art further reveals the lack of cooperation schemes among co-located networks that can lead to more optimal usage of the available spectrum. This article fills this gap in the literature by conceptually describing different classes of cooperation between LTE and Wi-Fi. For each class, we provide a detailed presentation of possible cooperation techniques that can provide spectral efficiency in a fair manner.

Amelioration of Benzo[a]pyrene-induced oxidative stress and pulmonary toxicity by Naringenin in Wistar rats: A plausible role of COX-2 and NF-κB. Hum Exp Toxicol 2016; 36:349-364. Abstract
Naringenin is a naturally occurring flavanones and has been found to exhibit free radical scavenging, enzyme inhibition, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Present study was designed to evaluate the protective role of naringenin against benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)-induced oxidative stress and pulmonary toxicity. Rats were treated with naringenin at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight (b. wt.), by oral gavage. B[a]P in a single dose of 50 mg/kg b. wt. was given intraperitoneally. Total protein, total cell counts, lactate dehydrogenase, lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, antioxidant enzymes activities, lung histology and expression of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) was assessed to evaluate protective effects of naringenin. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies were also carried out to observe lung toxicity and inflammation. B[a]P administration enhanced the levels of lung injury markers and reduced antioxidant enzymes activities. Naringenin treatment attenuated the levels of oxidative stress by restoring antioxidant enzymes, further improved lung histological damage and significant decrease in inflammatory responses. Naringenin also effectively decreased the expression of NF-κB, and COX-2 induced by B[a]P. These findings suggest that naringenin supplementation is beneficial in maintaining the integrity of alveoli and the epithelium that may be used as a protective agent in B[a]P-induced oxidative stress and lung damage. However, further studies are warranted to elucidate the potential mechanism of action of naringenin.

Abstract
2-Acetylaminofluorene (2-AAF) is a known hepatic carcinogen which leads to tumour formation in rodents. 18-β Glycyrrhetinic acid (18 β-GA) derived from liquorice plant has various pharmacological properties such as anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, hepatoprotective and antioxidant. This study is designed to elucidate the chemopreventive properties of 18 β-GA against 2-AAF-induced liver toxicity in Wistar rats and evaluated its effect on inflammatory and tumour promotion marker and activities of different oxidative stress enzymes. Administration of 2-AAF at the dose of (50 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) intraperitoneally (i.p.)) for five consecutive days induces hepatic toxicity, inflammation, oxidative stress and hyperproliferation. Pretreatment with 18 β-GA at two different doses (45 and 75 mg kg−1 b.w.) significantly ameliorates 2-AAF-induced increased lipid peroxidation, alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase, xanthine oxidase activities and activities of phase-II detoxifying enzymes along with the levels of glutathione content. Administration of 18 β-GA also significantly restored the expressions of proliferating cell nuclear antigen, cyclooxygenase 2, inducible nitric oxide synthase and nuclear factor κB. Furthermore, histological observations also support the preventive effects of 18 β-GA. Our findings suggest that pretreatment with 18 β-GA showed potential hepatoprotective effects via attenuation of oxidative stress, inflammation and hyperproliferation.
