Nonylphenol in the environment: a critical review on occurrence, fate, toxicity and treatment in wastewaters

Nonylphenol is a toxic xenobiotic compound classified as an endocrine disrupter capable of interfering with the hormonal system of numerous organisms. It originates principally from the degradation of nonylphenol ethoxylates which are widely used as industrial surfactants. Nonylphenol ethoxylates reach sewage treatment works in substantial quantities where they biodegrade into several by-products including nonylphenol. Due to its physical-chemical characteristics, such as low solubility and high hydrophobicity, nonylphenol accumulates in environmental compartments that are characterised by high organic content, typically sewage sludge and river sediments, where it persists. The occurrence of nonylphenol in the environment is clearly correlated with anthropogenic activities such as wastewater treatment, landfilling and sewage sludge recycling. Nonylphenol is found often in matrices such as sewage sludge, effluents from sewage treatment works, river water and sediments, soil and groundwater. The impacts of nonylphenol in the environment include feminization of aquatic organisms, decrease in male fertility and the survival of juveniles at concentrations as low as 8.2 microg/l. Due to the harmful effects of the degradation products of nonylphenol ethoxylates in the environment, the use and production of such compounds have been banned in EU countries and strictly monitored in many other countries such as Canada and Japan. Although it has been shown that the concentration of nonylphenol in the environment is decreasing, it is still found at concentrations of 4.1 microg/l in river waters and 1 mg/kg in sediments. Nonylphenol has been referred to in the list of priority substances in the Water Frame Directive and in the 3rd draft Working Document on Sludge of the EU. Consequently there is currently a concern within some industries about the possibility of future regulations that may impose the removal of trace contaminants from contaminated effluents. The significance of upgrading sewage treatment works with advanced treatment technologies for removal of trace contaminants is discussed.

Modelling the energy demands of aerobic and anaerobic membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment

A modelling study has been developed in which the energy requirements of aerobic and anaerobic membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are assessed in order to compare these two wastewater treatment technologies. The model took into consideration the aeration required for biological oxidation in aerobic MBRs (AeMBRs), the energy recovery from methane production in anaerobic MBRs (AnMBRs) and the energy demands of operating submerged and sidestream membrane configurations. Aeration and membrane energy demands were estimated based on previously developed modelling studies populated with operational data from the literature. Given the difference in sludge production between aerobic and anaerobic systems, the model was benchmarked by assuming high sludge retention times or complete retention of solids in both AeMBRs and AnMBRs. Analysis of biogas production in AnMBRs revealed that the heat required to achieve mesophilic temperatures (35 degrees C) in the reactor was only possible with influent wastewater strengths above 4-5 g COD L(-1). The general trend of the submerged configuration, which is less energy intensive than the sidestream configuration in aerobic systems, was not observed in AnMBRs, mainly due to the wide variation in gas demand utilized in anaerobic systems. Compared to AeMBRs, for which the energy requirements were estimated to approach 2 kWh m(-3) (influent up to 1 g COD L(-1)), the energy demands associated with fouling control in AnMBRs were lower (0.80 kWh m(-3) for influent of 1.14 g COD L(-1)), although due to the low fluxes reported in the literature capital costs associated with membrane material would be three times higher than this.

The effectiveness of anaerobic digestion in removing estrogens and nonylphenol ethoxylates

The fate and behaviour of two groups of endocrine disrupting chemicals, steroid estrogens and nonylphenol ethoxylates, have been evaluated during the anaerobic digestion of primary and mixed sewage sludge under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Digestion occurred over six retention times, in laboratory scale reactors, treating sludges collected from a sewage treatment works in the United Kingdom. It has been established that sludge concentrations of both groups of compounds demonstrated temporal variations and that concentrations in mixed sludge were influenced by the presence of waste activated sludge as a result of transformations during aerobic treatment. The biodegradation of total steroid estrogens was >50% during primary sludge digestion with lower removals observed for mixed sludge, which reflected bulk organic solids removal efficiencies. The removal of nonylphenol ethoxylates was greater in mixed sludge digestion (>58%) compared with primary sludge digestion and did not reflect bulk organic removal efficiencies. It is apparent that anaerobic digestion reduces the concentrations of these compounds, and would therefore be expected to confer a degree of protection against exposure and transfer of both groups of compounds to the receiving/re-use environment.

Safety and efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce ileus after colorectal surgery

BACKGROUND

Ileus is common after elective colorectal surgery, and is associated with increased adverse events and prolonged hospital stay. The aim was to assess the role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for reducing ileus after surgery.

METHODS

A prospective multicentre cohort study was delivered by an international, student- and trainee-led collaborative group. Adult patients undergoing elective colorectal resection between January and April 2018 were included. The primary outcome was time to gastrointestinal recovery, measured using a composite measure of bowel function and tolerance to oral intake. The impact of NSAIDs was explored using Cox regression analyses, including the results of a centre-specific survey of compliance to enhanced recovery principles. Secondary safety outcomes included anastomotic leak rate and acute kidney injury.

RESULTS

A total of 4164 patients were included, with a median age of 68 (i.q.r. 57-75) years (54·9 per cent men). Some 1153 (27·7 per cent) received NSAIDs on postoperative days 1-3, of whom 1061 (92·0 per cent) received non-selective cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors. After adjustment for baseline differences, the mean time to gastrointestinal recovery did not differ significantly between patients who received NSAIDs and those who did not (4·6 versus 4·8 days; hazard ratio 1·04, 95 per cent c.i. 0·96 to 1·12; P = 0·360). There were no significant differences in anastomotic leak rate (5·4 versus 4·6 per cent; P = 0·349) or acute kidney injury (14·3 versus 13·8 per cent; P = 0·666) between the groups. Significantly fewer patients receiving NSAIDs required strong opioid analgesia (35·3 versus 56·7 per cent; P < 0·001).

CONCLUSION

NSAIDs did not reduce the time for gastrointestinal recovery after colorectal surgery, but they were safe and associated with reduced postoperative opioid requirement.

Glycosaminoglycan analogs as a novel anti-inflammatory strategy

Heparin, a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), has both anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulant properties. The clinical use of heparin against inflammation, however, has been limited by concerns about increased bleeding. While the anti-coagulant activity of heparin is well understood, its anti-inflammatory properties are less so. Heparin is known to bind to certain cytokines, including chemokines, small proteins which mediate inflammation through their control of leukocyte migration and activation. Molecules which can interrupt the chemokine-GAG interaction without inhibiting coagulation could therefore, represent a new class of anti-inflammatory agents. In the present study, two approaches were undertaken, both focusing on the heparin-chemokine relationship. In the first, a structure based strategy was used: after an initial screening of potential small molecule binders using protein NMR on a target chemokine, binding molecules were optimized through structure-based design. In the second approach, commercially available short oligosaccharides were polysulfated. In vitro, these molecules prevented chemokine-GAG binding and chemokine receptor activation without disrupting coagulation. However, in vivo, these compounds caused variable results in a murine peritoneal recruitment assay, with a general increase of cell recruitment. In more disease specific models, such as antigen-induced arthritis and delayed-type hypersensitivity, an overall decrease in inflammation was noted, suggesting that the primary anti-inflammatory effect may also involve factors beyond the chemokine system.

Purification of human papillomavirus 16 E6/E7 plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid-based vaccine using an arginine modified monolithic support

The development of efficient plasmid DNA (pDNA) purification processes has fostered therapeutic applications like gene therapy and DNA vaccination. In fact, monolithic supports have emerged as interesting approaches to purify pDNA due to their excellent mass transfer properties and high binding capacity for large biomolecules. The present study describes a method that combines the high selectivity of arginine affinity ligands with the versatility of monoliths to efficiently purify the supercoiled (sc) plasmid HPV-16 E6/E7. Quality control tests indicated that the level of impurities (proteins, endotoxins, gDNA and RNA) in the final plasmid sample was in accordance with the guidelines proposed by regulatory agencies. Breakthrough experiments were designed to compare the dynamic binding capacity of pDNA in the conventional arginine-agarose matrix with the modified monolithic support. The arginine monolith capacity was substantially higher than the conventional arginine-agarose matrix at 10% of breakthrough under the flow rate and pDNA concentration used. Overall, given that the pDNA final product complies with regulatory specifications, this combined support can be the key to obtain an adequate non-viral vaccine against a HPV infection.

Improving the use of lichens as biomonitors of atmospheric metal pollution

The data reported on this study supported the hypothesis that the absence of the lichen Ramalina fastigiata near a copper mine site located on the south of Portugal was related to toxic levels of Cu-dust near the centre of the mine. Lichen biodiversity reflected the impact of the copper-mine dust emissions which were more widespread towards the east, correlated with wind direction and frequency. The chemical analysis of R. fastigiata collected at different distances and in different directions from the mine showed that Cu, K and Mg were derived from the centre of the mine site, confirming thus as the major source of atmospheric dust. Total inhibition of PSII photochemical reactions occurred in R. fastigiata both under field and controlled conditions, when intracellular Cu concentrations exceeded a threshold of approximately 2.0 mumol g-1. No samples of this species were found under field conditions beyond the Cu threshold. Thus, the fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm proved to be a good estimator of the survival capacity of R. fastigiata under field conditions and thus a useful parameter in determining the sensitivity of the lichens (photobiont) to Cu pollution. The intracellular location of Cu allowed an explanation of the physiological changes and the survival of the species in the surroundings of the copper-mine.

Crystal structure of piratoxin-I: a calcium-independent, myotoxic phospholipase A2-homologue from Bothrops pirajai venom

The crystal structure of Piratoxin-I (PrTX-I) a Lys49 homologue isolated from the venom of Bothrops pirajai has been determined and refined at 2.8 A to a crystallographic residual of 19.7% (Rfree = 29.7%). Amino-acid sequence differences between catalytically active phospholipases and PrTX-I in the putative Ca2+-binding loop, specifically the substitutions Tyr28 --> Asn, Gly32 --> Leu and Asp49 --> Lys, result in an altered conformation of this loop. The analysis of the position of the epsilon-amino group of Lys49 in the PrTX-I structure indicates that it fills the site normally occupied by the calcium ion in the catalytically active phospholipases. In contrast to the homologous monomeric Lys49 variant from Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus (App), PrTX-I is present as a dimer in the crystalline state, as observed in the structures of myotoxin II from Bothrops asper and Bothropstoxin I from Bothrops jararacussu. The two molecules in the asymmetric unit in the crystal structure of PrTX-I are related by a nearly perfect two-fold symmetry axis, yet the dimeric structure is radically different from the dimeric structure of the phospholipase from Crotalus atrox. In the C. atrox structure the dimer interface occludes the active sites, whereas in the PrTX-I structure they are exposed to solvent.

AGEs, contributors to placental bed vascular changes leading to preeclampsia

Glycation of proteins or other biomolecules and their further long-term degradation result in the formation of advanced glycation end products, AGEs. AGEs and other ligands interact with their receptors, RAGEs, localized to a variety of tissues, but mainly in endothelium and vascular wall cells. This interaction triggers diverse signaling pathways that converge on the activation of NF-κB and the initiation of a local inflammatory reaction that, when prolonged, results in dysfunctional features. Preeclampsia is a serious vascular disorder centred at the placenta-uterine interface, the placental bed, but the condition extends to the mother's circulation. RAGEs have notorious expression in the placental bed tissues along pregnancy but, in addition, RAGEs and their ligands are expressed in the fetal membranes and are found in the amniotic fluid and the mother's serum. Disorders complicating pregnancies and having an important vascular involvement, as preeclampsia and diabetes mellitus, have additional enhanced AGE/RAGE expression variation. This indicates that for their assessment, the assay of RAGEs or their ligands may become useful diagnostic or prognostic procedures.

Influence of temperature on process efficiency and microbial community response during the biological removal of chlorophenols in a packed-bed bioreactor

Two reactors, initially operated at 14 and 23+/-1 degrees C (RA and RB, respectively), were inoculated with a bacterial consortium enriched and acclimatized to the respective temperatures over 4 months. The biofilms, formed in the reactors, were studied using scanning electron microscopy, cultivation of the biofilm microflora, and physiological analysis of the isolates. Two bacteria able to mineralize chlorophenols under a large range of temperature (10-30 degrees C) were isolated from the biofilm communities of reactors RA and RB and characterized as Alcaligenaceae bacterium R14C4 and Cupriavidus basilensis R25C6, respectively. When temperature was decreased by 10 degrees C, the chlorophenols removal capacity was reduced from 51.6 to 22.8 mg l(-1) h(-1) in bioreactor RA (from 14 to 4 degrees C) and from 59.3 to 34.7 mg l(-1) h(-1) in bioreactor RB (from 23+/-1 to 14 degrees C). Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of the biofilm communities showed that, in all temperatures tested, the beta-proteobacteria were the major bacterial community (35-47%) followed by the gamma-proteobacteria (12.0-6.5%). When the temperature was decreased by 10 degrees C, the proportions of gamma-proteobacteria and Pseudomonas species increased significantly in both microbial communities.

Tools for determining critical levels of atmospheric ammonia under the influence of multiple disturbances

Critical levels (CLEs) of atmospheric ammonia based on biodiversity changes have been mostly calculated using small-scale single-source approaches, to avoid interference by other factors, which also influence biodiversity. Thus, it is questionable whether these CLEs are valid at larger spatial scales, in a multi- disturbances context. To test so, we sampled lichen diversity and ammonia at 80 sites across a region with a complex land-cover including industrial and urban areas. At a regional scale, confounding factors such as industrial pollutants prevailed, masking the CLEs. We propose and use a new tool to calculate CLEs by stratifying ammonia concentrations into classes, and focusing on the highest diversity values. Based on the significant correlations between ammonia and biodiversity, we found the CLE of ammonia for Mediterranean evergreen woodlands to be 0.69 μg m(-3), below the previously accepted value of 1.9 μg m(-3), and below the currently accepted pan-European CLE of 1.0 μg m(-3).

Door-to-door canvassing for immunization program acceleration in Mozambique: achievements and costs

The Expanded Program on Immunization has made remarkable progress in raising coverage in developing countries. Countries have been urged to accelerate their programs, especially in urban areas. In Mozambique, as part of program acceleration, volunteers from grassroots organizations conducted door-to-door canvassing for the Program. Concurrently, the availability of immunization was increased in health centers and in outreach visits. By 1987, over 90 percent coverage for all vaccines was achieved in the capital, Maputo; two other cities doubled their immunization coverage to over 50 percent fully immunized children, and rural areas of the pilot province achieved 60 percent coverage. Immunization costs were estimated in one city as $6.9 (U.S. dollars) per fully vaccinated child. Door-to-door canvassing accounted for more than 40 percent of personnel costs, and may have diverted attention from the quality of service in the health centers. In this article we outline the achievements and costs of door-to-door canvassing and discuss other strategies to raise coverage. The analysis of the need to balance the mobilization of demand with the capacity to respond is relevant to other countries in their efforts to develop sustainable immunization services.

Safety of hospital discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery

BACKGROUND

Ileus is common after colorectal surgery and is associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications. Identifying features of normal bowel recovery and the appropriateness for hospital discharge is challenging. This study explored the safety of hospital discharge before the return of bowel function.

METHODS

A prospective, multicentre cohort study was undertaken across an international collaborative network. Adult patients undergoing elective colorectal resection between January and April 2018 were included. The main outcome of interest was readmission to hospital within 30 days of surgery. The impact of discharge timing according to the return of bowel function was explored using multivariable regression analysis. Other outcomes were postoperative complications within 30 days of surgery, measured using the Clavien-Dindo classification system.

RESULTS

A total of 3288 patients were included in the analysis, of whom 301 (9·2 per cent) were discharged before the return of bowel function. The median duration of hospital stay for patients discharged before and after return of bowel function was 5 (i.q.r. 4-7) and 7 (6-8) days respectively (P < 0·001). There were no significant differences in rates of readmission between these groups (6·6 versus 8·0 per cent; P = 0·499), and this remained the case after multivariable adjustment for baseline differences (odds ratio 0·90, 95 per cent c.i. 0·55 to 1·46; P = 0·659). Rates of postoperative complications were also similar in those discharged before versus after return of bowel function (minor: 34·7 versus 39·5 per cent; major 3·3 versus 3·4 per cent; P = 0·110).

CONCLUSION

Discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery appears to be safe in appropriately selected patients.

Does increased salinity influence the competitive outcome of two producer species?

Within the context of global climate changes, it is expected that low-lying coastal freshwater ecosystems will face seawater intrusion with concomitant increase in salinity levels. Increased salinity may provoke disruption of competitive relationships among freshwater species. However, species may be capable of acclimating to salinity, which, in turn, may influence the resilience of ecosystems. Accordingly, this work aimed at assessing the effects of multigenerational exposure to low levels of salinity in the competitive outcome of two species of green microalgae: Raphidocelis subcapitata and Chlorella vulgaris. To attain this, three specific objectives were delineated: (1) compare the toxicity of natural seawater (SW) and NaCl (as a surrogate of SW) to the two microalgae, (2) determine the capacity of the two microalgae species to acclimate to low salinity levels, and (3) assess the influence of exposure to low salinity levels in the competitive outcome of the two microalgae. Results revealed SW to be slightly less toxic than NaCl for the two microalgae. The EC_25,72 h for growth rate was 4.63 and 10.3 mS cm^-1 for R. subcapitata and 6.94 and 15.4 mS cm^-1 for C. vulgaris, respectively for NaCl and SW. Both algae were capable of acclimating to low levels of salinity, but C. vulgaris seemed to acclimate faster than R. subcapitata. When exposed in competition, under control conditions, the growth rates of C. vulgaris were lower than those of R. subcapitata. However, C. vulgaris was capable of acquiring competitive advantage equaling or surpassing the growth rate of R. subcapitata with the addition of NaCl or SW, respectively. The multigenerational exposure to low levels of salinity influenced the competitive outcome of the two algae both under control and salinity exposure. These results suggest that long-term exposure to low salinity stress can cause shifts in structure of algae communities and, therefore, should not be neglected since algae are at the basis of food web constituting important energetic resources to higher trophic levels.

Latin american experience with two low-dose oral contraceptives containing 30 microg ethinylestradiol/75 microg gestodene and 20 microg ethinylestradiol/150 microg desogestrel

The objective of this study was to compare cycle control, efficacy and tolerance of an oral contraceptive containing 20 microg ethinylestradiol and 150 microg desogestrel with a preparation containing 30 microg ethinylestradiol combined with 75 microg gestodene. This study involved 342 women and 4104 cycles use in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. Contraceptive efficacy was good with both formulations. Two pregnancies occurred in the desogestrel group but were not due to method failure. With respect to cycle control, the incidence of intermenstrual bleeding was higher during the first 3 cycles in the desogestrel group; it was significant (p <0.01) during the first 3 days of the cycle for a normal or heavy bleeding only in the Mexican group. Amenorrhea was not reported for any group, but the incidence of dysmenorrhea was significantly higher (p <0.01) in the Brazilian desogestrel group (13.8%) and was significantly lower (p <0.01) in the Mexican gestodene group (8.5%). Adverse events were similar in all the countries with headache, breast tension, and nausea, the most frequently reported symptoms. The range of mean increase in body weight varied from 0.2 kg in the Argentine group to 2.6 kg in the Chilean group (95% confidence limit, +/- 2.51) in the gestodene group, and 0.2 kg in the Argentine group to 2.5 kg in Brazilian group (95% confidence limit, +/- 2.36) in the desogestrel group. Fifteen women discontinued because of headache, but there were no significant differences between the groups regarding discontinuation for this and other medical or non-medical reasons. Both oral contraceptive preparations are reliable and well tolerated, and both have favorable effects on control cycle.

Incidence and outcomes of healthcare-associated COVID-19 infections: significance of delayed diagnosis and correlation with staff absence

BACKGROUND

The sudden increase in COVID-19 admissions in hospitals during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic of 2020 led to onward transmissions among vulnerable inpatients.

AIMS

This study was performed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical outcomes of healthcare-associated COVID-19 infections (HA-COVID-19) during the 2020 epidemic and study factors which may promote or correlate with its incidence and transmission in a Teaching Hospital NHS Trust in London, UK.

METHODS

Electronic laboratory, patient and staff self-reported sickness records were interrogated from 1st March to 18th April 2020. HA-COVID-19 was defined as COVID-19 with symptom onset within >14 days of admission. Test performance of a single combined throat and nose swab (CTNS) for patient placement was calculated. The effect of delayed RNA positivity (DRP, defined as >48 h delay), staff self-reported COVID-19 sickness absence, hospital bed occupancy, and community incidence of COVID-19 was compared for HA-COVID-19. The incidence of other significant hospital-acquired bacterial infections (HAB) was compared with previous years.

RESULTS

Fifty-eight HA-COVID-19 (7.1%) cases were identified. When compared with community-acquired admitted cases (CA-COVID-19), significant differences were observed in age (P=0.018), ethnicity (P<0.001) and comorbidity burden (P<0.001) but not in 30-day mortality. CTNS-negative predictive value was 60.3%. DRP was associated with greater mortality (P=0.034) and incidence of HA-COVID-19 correlated positively with DRP (R = 0.7108) and staff sickness absence (R = 0.7815). For the study period HAB rates were similar to the previous 2 years.

CONCLUSIONS

Early diagnosis and isolation of COVID-19 patients would help to reduce transmission. A single CTNS has limited value in segregating patients into positive and negative pathways.

Causes of change in nitrophytic and oligotrophic lichen species in a Mediterranean climate: impact of land cover and atmospheric pollutants

With the aim of determining the main drivers of changes in nitrophytic and oligotrophic macro-lichen communities in an industrial region with a Mediterranean climate, we considered both land-cover types and atmospheric pollutants. We determined the relation between the abundance of nitrophytic and oligotrophic species with environmental factors considering the distance of influence of land-cover types. The results showed that oligotrophic species decreased in the proximity of artificial areas, barren land and agricultural areas, associated with higher concentrations of NO2 and Zn, and Ti, probably dust of industrial and agricultural origin. Nitrophytic species were positively related to all the mentioned land-cover types, and with higher concentrations of Fe and N. Magnesium, probably from ocean aerosols, was negatively related to oligotrophic species and positively to nitrophytic.

Carbon capture and biogas enhancement by carbon dioxide enrichment of anaerobic digesters treating sewage sludge or food waste

The increasing concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere and the stringent greenhouse gases (GHG) reduction targets, require the development of CO2 sequestration technologies applicable for the waste and wastewater sector. This study addressed the reduction of CO2 emissions and enhancement of biogas production associated with CO2 enrichment of anaerobic digesters (ADs). The benefits of CO2 enrichment were examined by injecting CO2 at 0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 M fractions into batch ADs treating food waste or sewage sludge. Daily specific methane (CH4) production increased 11-16% for food waste and 96-138% for sewage sludge over the first 24h. Potential CO2 reductions of 8-34% for sewage sludge and 3-11% for food waste were estimated. The capacity of ADs to utilise additional CO2 was demonstrated, which could provide a potential solution for onsite sequestration of CO2 streams while enhancing renewable energy production.

Fatal pneumonitis induced by oxaliplatin: description of three cases

We describe 3 fatal cases of interstitial pneumonitis rapidly evolving to pulmonary fibrosis and death after the administration of oxaliplatin as part of the FOLFOX regimen. Due to the widespread use of oxaliplatin in oncology, clinicians should be aware of the risk and severity of oxalipatin-induced interstitial pneumonia.

Dataset of Near-infrared spectroscopy measurement for amylose determination using PLS algorithms

In the dataset presented in this article, 168 rice samples comprising sixteen rice varieties (including Indica and Japonica sub species) from a Portuguese Rice Breeding Program obtained from three different sites along four seasons, and 11 standard rice varieties from International Rice Research Institute were characterised. The amylose concentration was evaluated based on iodine method, and the near infrared (NIR) spectra were determined. To assess the advantage of Near infrared spectroscopy, different rice varieties and specific algorithms based on Matlab software such as Standard Normal Variate (SNV), Multiple Scatter Calibration (MSC) and Savitzky-Golay filter were used for NIR spectra pre-processing.

Nitrogen removal from coke making wastewater through a pre-denitrification activated sludge process

Under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), coke production wastewater must be treated to produce an effluent characterised by a total nitrogen (TN) <50 mg/L. An anoxic-aerobic activated sludge pilot-plant (1 m³) fed with coke production wastewater was used to investigate the optimal operational requirements to achieve such an effluent. The loading rates applied to the pilot-plant varied between 0.198-0.418 kg COD/m³.day and 0.029-0.081 kg TN/m³.day, respectively. The ammonia (NH₄⁺-N) removals were maintained at 96%, after alkalinity addition. Under all conditions, phenol and SCN^- remained stable at 96% and 100%, respectively with both being utilised as carbon sources during denitrification. The obtained results showed that influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) to TN ratio of should be maintained at >5.7 to produce an effluent TN <50 mg/L. Furthermore, nitrite accumulation was observed under all conditions indicating a disturbance to the denitrification pathway. Overall, the anoxic-aerobic activated sludge process was shown to be a robust and reliable technology to treat coke making wastewater and achieve the IED requirements. Nevertheless, the influent to the anoxic tank should be monitored to ensure a sCOD:TN ratio >5.7 or, alternately, the addition of an external carbon source should be considered.
