Abstract
The RNase-colloidal gold procedure for the ultrastructural localization of RNA was used for rat testis. Along with other structures, it was found that the testicular sperm nucleus was well stained. Similar labelling was observed in the nucleus of rat epididymal sperm and human sperm. The RNA was extracted from sperm and analyzed by electrophoresis on 10% polyacrylamide gel and 7 M urea. The electrophoretic profile revealed a complex set of bands ranging in size from tRNA to high molecular weight components. On the average, a content of about 0.1 pg of RNA per rat or human sperm was found.

Abstract
Colles' fracture (CF) in postmenopausal women has been linked to low bone mass at the lumbar spine and hip. However, the diverse methodological approaches of previous studies make the results difficult to compare and thus the implications of CF in osteoporosis daily clinical practice are not clear. We explored the association between CF and low bone mineral density (BMD) in an incident case-control study in 58 postmenopausal Spanish women aged 45-80 years with recent CF and in 83 population-based controls of the same age range. The BMD of ultradistal distal forearm, lumbar spine and hip was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and WHO criteria were used to define osteoporosis and osteopenia. BMD was significantly lower in cases for all three areas ( p<0.001). Osteoporosis was more prevalent in cases than controls in the wrist (60% vs. 35%, p<0.001), lumbar spine (47% vs. 20%, p<0.005) and hip (19% vs. 6%, p<0.005). After adjusting for age, menopausal status and body mass index, osteoporosis and osteopenia remained significantly associated with CF only in women aged 65 years or less (ultradistal forearm OR 5.7 (95% CI 1.2-27.2), lumbar spine OR 3.9 (95% CI 1.1-14.3)). We conclude that CF in postmenopausal women aged 65 or less may be used as a sentinel finding to identify patients with generalized osteoporosis. Additionally, 70% of all CF patients regardless of their age had low bone mass ( T-score<-1SD) in any studied site.

Abstract
In vitro capacitation of dog spermatozoa in a medium without sugars and with lactate as the metabolic substrate (l-CCM) was accompanied by a progressive increase of intracellular glycogen during the first 2 h of incubation, which was followed by a subsequent decrease of glycogen levels after up to 4 h of incubation. Lactate from the medium is the source for the observed glycogen synthesis, as the presence of [(14)C]glycogen after the addition to l-CCM with [(14)C]lactate was demonstrated. The existence of functional gluconeogenesis in dog sperm was also sustained by the presence of key enzymes of this metabolic pathway, such as fructose 1,6-bisphophatase and aldolase B. On the other hand, glycogen metabolism from gluconeogenic sources was important in the maintenance of a correct in vitro fertilization after incubation in the l-CCM. This was demonstrated after the addition of phenylacetic acid (PAA) to l-CCM. In the presence of PAA, in vitro capacitation of dog spermatozoa suffered alterations, which translated into changes in capacitation functional markers, like the increase in the percentage of altered acrosomes, a distinct motion pattern, decrease or even disappearance of capacitation-induced tyrosine phosphorylation, and increased heterogeneity of the chlorotetracycline pattern in capacitated cells. Thus, this is the first report indicating the existence of a functional glyconeogenesis in mammalian spermatozoa. Moreover, gluconeogenesis-linked glycogen metabolism seems to be of importance in the maintenance of a correct in vitro capacitation in dog sperm in the absence of hexoses in the medium.

Abstract
Analysis of epididymal rat sperm RNA strongly suggested the presence of U snRNAs, especially U1 and U2 snRNA. By Northern blot analysis with radiolabeled oligodeoxynucleotide probes, the presence of U1 and U2 snRNA in rat sperm was confirmed. To precisely localize these RNAs, in situ hybridization with antisense and sense oligo probes labeled with digoxigenin was carried out. The results indicate that U1 as well as U2 snRNA are confined to the sperm nucleus.

Abstract
Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased vascularity of the airway mucosa in asthma potentially increases heat loss in the airways. OBJECTIVE To determine if the inflamed airways of subjects with uncontrolled asthma show increased exhaled breath temperature (EBT). PATIENTS AND METHODS In 100 patients with persistent asthma and 50 healthy volunteers, we measured lung function by post-bronchodilator forced spirometry, the asthma control test (ACT) and EBT. RESULTS Patients with asthma, of whom 49 (49%) were female, with a mean (± standard error of the mean) age of 44 (±17) years and a predicted forced expiratory volume in one second of 71% (±16), had a significantly increased EBT, particularly those with uncontrolled asthma (n = 50, ACT ≤ 19, EBT 34.9 ± 0.8°C), compared to patients with controlled asthma (n = 50, ACT ≥ 20, EBT 33.7 ± 0.8°C) and healthy volunteers (n = 50, EBT 33.2 ± 0.2°C, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION We observed a higher temperature on exhaled breath in subjects with uncontrolled asthma than in subjects with controlled asthma and healthy controls. The increase in exhaled breath temperature may be a proxy for a raised airway inflammatory state in asthma patients.

Abstract
The impaired formation of the diaphragma sellae may lead to the development of the empty-sella syndrome. This structure, when fully formed, is a protective barrier against the pulsating action that the cerebrospinal fluid exerts on the sellar content. There are anatomical features which support this belief, but they also suggest that the development of the diaphragma sellae is a factor which determines the morphology of the sella turcica and its contents. Those human specimens which do not have diaphragma sellae or in which it is only partially developed, are characterized by a smaller hypophysis, always located at the inferior and/or posterior half of the sella, with a larger sellar volume and frequently greater fragility of its bony walls. These findings, although rare (5% of the cases), are indirect signs of the important role which the diaphragma sellae plays in the sellar region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Little is known about the impact of specific dietary patterns on the development of obesity phenotypes. We aimed to determine the association of longitudinal changes in adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) with the transition between different obesity phenotypes. METHODS Data of 5801 older men and women at high cardiovascular risk from PREDIMED trial were used. Adherence to MedDiet was measured with the validated 14p-Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS). Using the simultaneous combination of metabolic health- and body size-related parameters participants were categorized into one of four phenotypes: metabolically healthy and abnormal obese (MHO and MAO), metabolically healthy and abnormal non-obese (MHNO and MANO). Cox regression models with yearly repeated measures during 5-year of follow-up were built with use of Markov chain assumption. RESULTS Each 2-point increase in MEDAS was associated with the following transitions: in MAO participants, with a 16% (95% CI 3-31%) greater likelihood of becoming MHO; in MHO participants with a 14% (3-23%) lower risk of becoming MAO; in MHNO participants with a 18% (5-30%) lower risk of becoming MHO. In MANO women, but not in men, MEDAS was associated with 20% (5-38%) greater likely of becoming MHNO (p for interaction by gender 0.014). No other significant associations were observed. CONCLUSIONS Better adherence to the traditional MedDiet is associated with transitions to healthier phenotypes, promoting metabolic health improvement in MAO, MANO (only in women), and MHO, as well as protecting against obesity incidence in MHNO subjects.

Abstract
Piscirickettsia salmonis is the pathogen causing Piscirickettsiosis. For treatment, the industry mainly uses oxytetracycline and florfenicol, so it is essential to understand the degree of susceptibility of this pathogen to these drugs. But this is still unknown for a large number of P. salmonis strains, as are the molecular mechanisms responsible for greater or lesser susceptibility. However, genes that confer resistance to these antimicrobials have been reported and characterized for this and other bacterial species, among which are membrane proteins that take out the drug. Our results identified differences in the degree of susceptibility to both antibiotics among different Chilean isolated of these bacteria. We analysed 10 available genomes in our laboratory and identified ~140 genes likely to be involved in antibiotic resistance. We analysed six specific genes, which suggests that some of them would eventually be relevant in conferring resistance to both antibiotics, as they encode for specific transporter proteins, which increase the number of transcripts when grown in media with these antibiotics. Our results were corroborated with EtBr permeability analysis, which revealed that the LF-89 strain accumulates this compound and has a reduced capacity to expulse it compared with the field strains.

Abstract
Of the two homologous isozymes of aspartate aminotransferase that are also nearly identical in their folded structures, only the mitochondrial form (mAAT) is synthesized as a precursor (pmAAT). After its in vitro synthesis in rabbit reticulocyte lysate, it can also be efficiently imported into isolated rat liver mitochondria, where it is processed to its native form by removal of the N-terminal presequence. The homologous cytosolic isoenzyme (cAAT) is not imported into mitochondria, even after fusion of the mitochondrial presequence from pmAAT to its N-terminal end. Substitution of the 30-residue N-terminal peptide of the mature portion of pmAAT with the corresponding sequence from the homologous, import-incompetent cytosolic isozyme (pcmAAT) does not prevent import but reduces substantially its processing in the matrix. A detectable amount of the pcmAAT chimera is found associated with the inner mitochondrial membrane. Single and double substitution mutants of Trp-5 and Trp-6 at the N-terminal end of the mature protein are imported into mitochondria with efficiency similar to that of wild type. However, replacement of Trp-5 with proline, or of both tryptophans with either alanine (W5A/W6A mutant) or valine and alanine (W5V/W6A mutant), allows import but interferes with the correct processing of the imported protein despite the presence of an intact cleavage site for the processing peptidase. Similar cleavage results were obtained using newly synthesized proteins and mitochondrial matrix extracts. These results indicate that translocation and processing for a precursor are independent events and that sequences C-terminal to the cleavage site are indeed important for the correct maturation of pmAAT in the matrix, probably because of their contribution to the conformation and flexibility of the peptide region surrounding the cleavage site required for efficient processing. The same region from the mature component of the protein may play a role in the commitment of the passenger protein to complete its translocation into the matrix.

Abstract
The spore morphology and wall ultrastructure of Microlepia speluncae and Pteridium arachnoideum from the Paranaense Province were analyzed with LM, SEM and TEM and a comparative analysis was carried out. In both species the spores are covered by a three-dimensional network of threads branched and fused, tangentially arranged to the surface, and some free-end threads are also seen. The species were differentiated by morphology and the frequency of threads fusion and the networks distribution on the surface of the spores. In both species the exospore is two-layered in section, both layers are traversed by single or branched channels. The perispore is three-layered in section: the inner layer is adhered to the exospore, the middle layer is formed of a three-dimensional network of threads and the outer layer is discontinuous. The perispore ultrastructure of Microlepia speluncae was interpreted as formed of helical subunits displayed around a central channel. The spore morphology and perispore ultrastructure allow differentiating Microlepia from Pteridium but also to the other Dennstaedtiaceae genera that grow in the Paranaense Province. The results obtained allow establishing relationships that let us recognize different groups and gave a new reference to get a better knowledge of the family.

Abstract
Piscirickettsia salmonis is a facultative intracellular bacterium that generates piscirickettsiosis affecting salmonids in Chile. The bacterium has the adaptability to survive in the marine environment under multiple stressful conditions. In this sense, this work focused on the analysis of a gene battery associated with biofilm formation under different culture conditions and on the adaptability of this biofilm to different media. The results indicated that the strains LF-89, IBM-034 and IBM-040 were strong biofilm producers, evidencing adaptability to the media by increasing the amount of biofilm through successive growths. Transcript levels of six genes described in various bacteria and P. salmonis, considered to have metabolic functions, and playing a relevant role in biofilm formation, were analyzed to evaluate bacterial functionality in the biofilm. The genes mazE-mazF, implicated in biofilm and stress, were markedly overexpressed in the biofilm condition in the three strains. For its part, gene gltA, an indicator of metabolic activity and related to virulence inhibition in Salmonella typhimurium, also seems to restrain the pathogenesis process in P. salmonis by inhibiting the expression of the virulence-associated genes liso and tcf. Finally, the expression of the glnA gene suggests the use of glutamine as an essential element for the growth of the biofilm.

Abstract
PURPOSE Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) are frequent conditions in pediatrics. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) is a useful homeostatic biomarker of glycemia and may reflect alterations deriving from sleep breathing disorders. The aim of this study was to relate the severity of OSA with blood HbA1C levels in children. METHODS A descriptive observational study in snoring patients was performed. All patients underwent a sleep study and classified either as simple snorers (apnea-hypopnea index; AHI ≤ 1 episodies/h) or as OSA patients (AHI > 1 episodes/h). In the following morning, a blood glycemic profile (fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1C, and the HOMA index) was performed to every individual. RESULTS A total of 48 patients were included. HbA1C levels were shown to be increased in the moderate OSA (AHI > 5 episodes/h) group (5.05 ± 0.25 vs. 5.24 ± 0.29%; p = 0.019). Significant correlations were found between HbA1C values and AHI (r = 0.345; p = 0.016) and also with oxygen desaturation index (r = 0.40; p = 0.005). Correlations remained significant after adjusting by age and body mass index. The AHI-associated change in HbA1C was 13.4% (p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS In the pediatric population, HbA1C is a biomarker associated with OSA severity, and this relationship is age- and obesity-independent. The fact that this association was observed in snoring patients could help the physician in the distinction between those patients affected with OSA and those with simple snoring. Therefore, HbA1C measurement could play a major role in the diagnosis and the management of the syndrome.

Abstract
High-quality image reconstruction techniques allow the generation of high pixel density images from a set of low-resolution micrographs. In general, these techniques consist of two main steps, namely, accurate registration, and formulation of an appropriate forward image model via some restoration method. There exist a wide variety of algorithms to cope with both stages and depending on their practical applications, some methods can outperform others, since they can be sensitive to the assumed data model, noise, drift, etc. When dealing with images generated by Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopes, a current trend is based on non-rigid approximations in the registration stage. In our work we aimed at reaching similar accuracy but addressing the most complex calculations in the reconstruction stage, instead of in the registration stage (as the non-rigid approaches do), but using a much smaller number of images. We review some of the most significant methods and address their shortcomings when they are applied to the field of microscopy. Simulated images with known targets will be used to evaluate and compare the main approaches in terms of quality enhancement and computing time. In addition, a procedure to determine the reference image will be proposed to minimise the global drift on the series. The best registration and restoration strategies will be applied to experimental images in order to point up the enhanced capability of this high quality image reconstruction methodology in this field.

Abstract
Colles' fracture (CF) in younger postmenopausal women is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and with an increased risk of other osteoporotic fractures; however, the prevalence of vertebral deformities has been not studied in CF patients. Vertebral morphometry (MXA) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a research tool developed to evaluate the presence of vertebral deformities, but its clinical use is still limited. The goals of this work were to know the prevalence of vertebral deformities in women with CF, to study the morphometric characteristics of height ratios, and to determine the correlation between MXA findings and BMD. MXA was evaluated within an incident case-control study in which 58 women with a recent CF and 83 population-based control women were enrolled. Anterior (Ha), middle (Hm), and posterior (Hp) heights were measured, and wedge (Ha/Hp) and mid-wedge (Hm/Hp) ratios were calculated. A vertebral deformity was defined when at least one ratio fell 3 SD below the reference mean of that ratio at any vertebral level. The mean age of cases was 65.8 yr and in controls 58.7 (p < 0.05). Morphometric vertebral deformities were found in 19% of cases against 11% of controls (nonsignificant). The cases had a lower mid-wedge ratio than controls at each vertebral level (p < 0.05), while wedge ratio results did not show significant results. When the sample was stratified by age, CF showed a trend to be associated with vertebral deformity only in the younger (<65 yr) group. A low but significant coefficient of correlation was found between mid-wedge ratio and BMD, mainly at hip level. By using MXA we found that younger Colles' fracture cases were likely to have more vertebral deformities than healthy controls of the same age range.

Abstract
A multiplex (m-)PCR-based protocol was designed for the simultaneous detection of the main marine bacterial pathogens in Chilean salmon farms: Streptococcus phocae, Aeromonas salmonicida, Vibrio anguillarum and Piscirickettsia salmonis. Each of the 4 oligonucleotide primer pairs exclusively amplified the target gene of the specific bacterial pathogen. The detection limit of the m-PCR using purified total bacterial DNA was 50 pg microl(-1) for V anguillarum, 500 fg microl(-1) for P. salmonis, and 5 pg microl(-1) for S. phocae and A. salmonicida. This corresponded to average limits in the m-PCR sensitivity of 3.69 x 10(5) CFU ml(-1) of V anguillarum, 1.26 x 10(4) CFU m(-1) of S. phocae, and 5.33 x 10(4) CFU ml(-1) of A. salmonicida, while the detection limits for the spiked fish tissues, regardless of the sample (spleen, kidney, liver or muscle) were 2.64 +/- 0.54 x 10(7) CFU g(-1) for V. anguillarum, 9.03 +/- 1.84 x 10(5) CFU g(-1) for S. phocae, 3.8 +/- 0.78 x 10(3) CFU mg(-1) for A. salmonicida and 100 P. salmonis cells. However, high amounts of DNA from 3 bacterial species had a reduction of -1 log-unit on the amplification sensitivity of S. phocae or A. salmonicida when these were present in lower concentration in the multiplex reaction. The assay described in this study is a rapid, sensitive and efficient tool to detect the presence of S. phocae, A. salmonicida, V. anguillarum and P. salmonis simultaneously from pure cultures and tissues from clinically diseased fish. Therefore, it may be a useful alternative to culture-based methods for the diagnosis of infections in fish obtained from Chilean salmon farms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale (MWLCS) measures a person's beliefs regarding the locus of control or lack of locus of control over his/her body weight. PURPOSE We aim to evaluate the factorial structure and psychometric properties of the MWLCS with Spanish normal weight, overweight and obese samples. METHODS The research was carried out in two different studies. The first included a sample of 140 normal weight participants, selected out of a 274 sample recruited with an online survey. Study 2 was carried out in a sample of 633 participants recruited from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Out of them, 558 participants fulfilled the weight criteria and were categorized into: overweight (BMI 25 - < 29.99; N = 170), obese class I (BMI 30 - < 34.99; N = 266), and obese class II (BMI 35 - < 39.99; N = 122). Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses were used to evaluate the factor structure of the MWLCS, and reliabilities and Spearman's correlations were estimated. Invariance measurement was tested across the three subgroups of weight in Study 2. RESULTS A three-factor structure indicating weight locus of control factors (internal, chance, and powerful others) was supported, both via EFA in the normal weight sample and CFA in the overweight and obese samples. In the normal weight sample, the powerful others dimension was positively related to BMI and the dimensions of the Dutch Eating Behaviors Questionnaire. Additionally, the scale showed evidence of scalar invariance across the groups with different weight conditions. CONCLUSIONS This scale seems to be a psychometrically appropriate instrument and its use is highly recommended when designing interventions for overweight or obese individuals. Abstract
Currently, in Argentina 368 species of true ferns (i.e. Polypodiopsida class) are distributed throughout the country, however, only four of them have been mentioned until now as weeds and ruderal species. The goal of this work was to generate an update of weedy ferns from Argentina, including morphology, distribution, and type of weed according to their impact on natural habitats and/or human activities. All Argentinian fern species were analyzed based on references, herbarium specimens, and field trips. As a result of our study 25 species were recorded from Argentina and classified as segetal, ecological, or aquatic weeds, and ruderal and/or toxic species. Current taxonomic identity, diagnostic characters, origins, habitats, geographical distribution, common names, and impact and potential risks were indicated by species. In addition, we provide a dichotomous key to species, presence of these species in southern South American countries, as well as and photographs in natural habitat. This work represents the first review on native and exotic ferns from Argentina that cause an impact on human activities or disturbe native habitats. The results provide information for the development of weed management tools and priority areas to implement them.

Abstract
Resumen São apresentados os resultados do levantamento florístico das angiospermas da APA Municipal do Rio Vermelho/Humboldt, localizada em área de Mata Atlântica no sul do Brasil. As coletas foram realizadas entre os anos de 2004 e 2017, e a identificação das espécies foi baseada em consulta bibliográfica, comparação com acervos de herbários e auxílio de outros especialistas. Foram inventariadas 979 espécies, distribuídas em 134 famílias, com maior riqueza de Asteraceae (87 espécies), Orchidaceae (86), Solanaceae (58), Melastomataceae (51), Bromeliaceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae (cada uma com 37), Myrtaceae (34), Piperaceae (33), Cyperaceae e Poaceae (ambas com 18). Doze espécies estão classificadas como ameaçadas de extinção e 21 espécies são novas ocorrências para o estado de Santa Catarina. A elevada riqueza florística demonstra a importância da APA para a conservação da diversidade vegetal no sul do Brasil.

Abstract
El cultivo in vitro de esporas y los aspectos reproductivos del helecho anual Anogramma chaerophylla (Pteridaceae). Anogramma chaerophylla pertenece a un género de helechos con esporofitos anuales y gametofitos potencialmente perennes. En el área de estudio, la Reserva Natural Punta Lara, la vegetación crece bajo estrés debido principalmente a la contaminación y la invasión de especies exóticas. Como parte de un proyecto de conservación de helechos que habitan en la provincia de Buenos Aires, los objetivos del trabajo fueron evaluar en Anogramma chaerophylla las condiciones para la germinación de esporas in-vitro y analizar las distintas etapas de su ciclo reproductivo. Las esporas fueron desinfectadas en solución 10 % de NaCIO durante distintos tiempos y sembradas luego en medio de cultivo Murashige – Skoog, sin agregado de sacarosa. Las cápsulas se incubaron con un fotoperíodo de 12 h luz/oscuridad y una temperatura de 22 (± 2) °C. A las dos semanas germinaron el 80% de las esporas. El patrón de germinación fue tipo Vittaria y el desarrollo del protalo tipo Ceratopteris.Los gametangios aparecieron primero en la región engrosada del protalo donde posteriormente se originaron los tubérculos bisexuales. Los esporofitos se desarrollaron solo en asociación con los tubérculos. Durante su cultivo en macetas, éstos dieron origen a una segunda generación de protalos.Nuestros resultados demuestran que la técnica de cultivo in vitro es apropiada para la propagación de Anogramma chaerophylla y como estrategia para su conservación ex-situ.

Abstract
The genera of Dennstaedtiaceae have sporophytes with very different morphological characteristics between each other, and this feature has made difficult the systematic circumscription of the family. This reason makes necessary the study of new characters that allow a better understanding of the relations within the group. The spore morphology and wall structure of Blotiella lindeniana, Histiopteris incisa and Paesia glandulosa from the Paranaense Phytogeographic Province were studied using light microscope, and scanning and transmission electron microscope. The exospore has two layers and, according to the species, the exospore surface bears pila, echinae, verrucae, bacula and tubercles. The perispore has two or three layers and its surface is psilate, baculate or rugulate. The variability found in the sculpture of the spores and their stratification and ultrastructure of perispore reflects the morphological differences observed in the sporophyte of the species studied. Additionally, while the stratification and ultrastructure of the exospore is shared by the Dennstaedtiaceae species, their ornamentation could be a character to distinguish species into the clade "hypolepidoide". The finding of spores with similar characteristics in phylogenetically unrelated families allows us to suggest that palynological features do not have an evolutionary value to establish relationships between groups above the genus level.

Abstract
From simple averaging to more sophisticated registration and restoration strategies, such as super-resolution (SR), there exist different computational techniques that use a series of images of the same object to generate enhanced images where noise and other distortions have been reduced. In this work, we provide qualitative and quantitative measurements of this enhancement for high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging. These images are compared in two ways, qualitatively through visual inspection in real and reciprocal space, and quantitatively, through the calculation of objective measurements, such as signal-to-noise ratio and atom column roundness. Results show that these techniques improve the quality of the images. In this paper, we use an SR methodology that allows us to take advantage of the information present in the image frames and to reliably facilitate the analysis of more difficult regions of interest in experimental images, such as surfaces and interfaces. By acquiring a series of cross-sectional experimental images of magnetite (Fe3O4) thin films (111), we have generated interpolated images using averaging and SR, and reconstructed the atomic structure of the very top surface layer that consists of a full monolayer of Fe, with topmost Fe atoms in tetrahedrally coordinated sites.
