Recruitment Variability of Coral Reef Sessile Communities of the Far North Great Barrier Reef

One of the key components in assessing marine sessile organism demography is determining recruitment patterns to benthic habitats. An analysis of serially deployed recruitment tiles across depth (6 and 12 m), seasons (summer and winter) and space (meters to kilometres) was used to quantify recruitment assemblage structure (abundance and percent cover) of corals, sponges, ascidians, algae and other sessile organisms from the northern sector of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Polychaetes were most abundant on recruitment titles, reaching almost 50% of total recruitment, yet covered <5% of each tile. In contrast, mean abundances of sponges, ascidians, algae, and bryozoans combined was generally less than 20% of total recruitment, with percentage cover ranging between 15–30% per tile. Coral recruitment was very low, with <1 recruit per tile identified. A hierarchal analysis of variation over a range of spatial and temporal scales showed significant spatio-temporal variation in recruitment patterns, but the highest variability occurred at the lowest spatial scale examined (1 m—among tiles). Temporal variability in recruitment of both numbers of taxa and percentage cover was also evident across both summer and winter. Recruitment across depth varied for some taxonomic groups like algae, sponges and ascidians, with greatest differences in summer. This study presents some of the first data on benthic recruitment within the northern GBR and provides a greater understanding of population ecology for coral reefs.

The effects of coastal development on sponge abundance, diversity, and community composition on Jamaican coral reefs

Over the past decade, development along the northern coast of Jamaica has accelerated, resulting in elevated levels of sedimentation on adjacent reefs. To understand the effects of this development on sponge community dynamics, we conducted surveys at three locations with varying degrees of adjacent coastal development to quantify species richness, abundance and diversity at two depths (8-10 m and 15-18 m). Sediment accumulation rate, total suspended solids and other water quality parameters were also quantified. The sponge community at the location with the least coastal development and anthropogenic influence was often significantly different from the other two locations, and exhibited higher sponge abundance, richness, and diversity. Sponge community composition and size distribution were statistically different among locations. This study provides correlative evidence that coastal development affects aspects of sponge community ecology, although the precise mechanisms are still unclear.

Soft biocompatible gels comprised of rolled up graphene oxide nanocapsules within the pores of silanized hydrogels may be used as electrochemical pseudocapacitors with physiological glucose or KOH as a reducing agent, affording a material suitable for devices requiring pulses with characteristic time less than a second.

Seabird bycatch in pelagic longline fisheries is grossly underestimated when using only haul data

Hundreds of thousands of seabirds are killed each year as bycatch in longline fisheries. Seabirds are predominantly caught during line setting but bycatch is generally recorded during line hauling, many hours after birds are caught. Bird loss during this interval may lead to inaccurate bycatch information. In this 15 year study, seabird bycatch was recorded during both line setting and line hauling from four fishing regions: Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, Coral Sea and central Pacific Ocean. Over 43,000 albatrosses, petrels and skuas representing over 25 species were counted during line setting of which almost 6,000 seabirds attempted to take the bait. Bait-taking interactions were placed into one of four categories. (i) The majority (57%) of bait-taking attempts were “unsuccessful” involving seabirds that did not take the bait nor get caught or hooked. (ii) One-third of attempts were “successful” with seabirds removing the bait while not getting caught. (iii) One-hundred and seventy-six seabirds (3% of attempts) were observed being “caught” during line setting, with three albatross species – Laysan (Phoebastria immutabilis), black-footed (P. nigripes) and black-browed (Thalassarche melanophrys)– dominating this category. However, of these, only 85 (48%) seabird carcasses were retrieved during line hauling. Most caught seabirds were hooked through the bill. (iv) The remainder of seabird-bait interactions (7%) was not clearly observed, but likely involved more “caught” seabirds. Bait taking attempts and percentage outcome (e.g. successful, caught) varied between seabird species and was not always related to species abundance around fishing vessels. Using only haul data to calculate seabird bycatch grossly underestimates actual bycatch levels, with the level of seabird bycatch from pelagic longline fishing possibly double what was previously thought.

In vitro culture of the tropical sponge Axinella corrugata (Demospongiae): effect of food cell concentration on growth, clearance rate, and biosynthesis of stevensine

In vitro culture is one possible method for supplying sponge metabolites for pharmaceutical applications, but appropriate feeding regimens that maximize both growth and metabolite biosynthesis are largely unknown. According to the natural concentration (NC) of cells 1 to 50 micro m in size that are available to wild Axinella corrugata, we fed explants a multispecific diet of bacteria, microalgae, and yeast at 4 different concentrations: 1NC, 3NC, 5NC, and 5+1NC (the last consisted of 5 NC of bacteria and 1 NC of microalgae and yeast). Explants fed a 3NC diet had the best culture response, growing on average from 8.5 g to 10.3 g in 8 weeks, and showing a 110% increase in concentration (milligrams per gram of dry weight) of the antitumor compound stevensine. Stevensine production in 3NC explants, representing the total milligrams of metabolite per explant, increased by 157% over the study. Explants fed at 1NC had relatively stable weights, indicating that the diet met metabolic costs only. Explants fed at the two highest concentrations lost weight after 4 weeks, possibly because long-term high cell concentration blocked their aquiferous system, reducing their ability to feed efficiently. Stevensine production in explants fed the 1NC, 5NC, or 5+1NC diets were similar, and varied little from the initial amount. A separate experiment showed that the clearance rate for A. corrugata is similar between the examined food types and cell concentrations over 5 hours, averaging 766 ml h(-1) g DW(-1).Overall, this study demonstrates that relatively small changes in food abundance can greatly affect both sponge growth and metabolite biosynthesis. The good growth and increased production of the target metabolite stevensine for A. corrugata explants fed a 3NC diet suggests that in vitro culture is a viable method of supplying some sponge metabolites.

The discovery and development of marine compounds with pharmaceutical potential

An assessment of the current status of marine anticancer compounds is presented along with a case study on the aquaculture of Lissodendoryx n. sp. 1, a sponge that produces the antimitotic agents halichondrin B and isohomohalichondrin B. The use of polymer therapeutics to enhance the properties of marine natural products is considered.
