Liquid mixtures involving complex formation : Extensions of the ideal associated solution theory

Extensions of the ideal associated solution theory which take into account intermolecular interaction and/or size factors are derived and applied to triethylamine+ CHCl3 and diethyl ether+CHCl3. Evidence is presented for non-hydrogen-bonding specific interactions between the unlike molecules in these systems. Theories that do not take this into consideration are likely to be unsatisfactory for the determination of hydrogen-bond properties. With respect to the evaluation of ?net complex formation? properties, the extensions considered do not represent significant improvements of the simple theory. The molar enthalpies of mixing of triethylamine+CH3CCl, and diethyl ether+ CH3CCl3 have been measured at 288.15 and 298.15 K.

Investigating Gait, Movement, and Coordination in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Is There a Role for Motor Abnormalities in Atypical Neurodevelopment?

Motor abnormalities have been suggested to play a role in most neuropsychiatric disorders, as a potential generic neurodevelopmental vulnerability. However, they still represent a neglected area, with a paucity of empirical studies, especially in pediatric populations. This case-control study aimed to comprehensively assess motor functioning in children with atypical neurodevelopment and investigate whether any socio-demographic or clinical characteristics would concur with motor difficulties to distinguish children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) from healthy controls. Socio-demographic (age and gender) and clinical (intelligence quotient, gait, movement, and coordination) data were collected on 114 children aged 5-15 (83 with NDD, 31 healthy controls). Male children were at significantly higher risk for NDD (OR: 13.023, p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a statistically significant interaction between the total intelligence quotient and overall coordination such that increasing levels of total intelligence quotient appeared to protect against the likelihood of being diagnosed with an NDD, but only in the context of a preserved coordination (OR: 0.964, p = 0.038). Collectively, results may have important public health implications, as they point towards the development of new approaches to establish an early prognosis in neurodevelopment, including assessing motor difficulties and mitigating their impact on children's quality of life.

A survey to quantify wet loads after steam sterilization processes in healthcare facilities

Wet loads after steam sterilization of medical devices in healthcare facilities are unacceptable. However, little is known about their frequency in daily practice. An online survey was distributed via four national sterilization associations, in Australia (Sterilising Research Advisory Council of Australia (Vic), Inc. (VIC SRACA)), Belgium (Vereniging sterilisatie in het ziekenhuis (VSZ)), Italy (Associazione Italiana Operatori Sanitari addetti alla Sterilizzazione - Società Scientifica (AIOS)), and The Netherlands (Vereniging van Deskundigen Steriele Medische Hulpmiddelen (VDSMH)). Seventy-eight percent of 125 hospital sterilization facilities recognized wet loads, occurring at frequencies ranging from monthly to every load. Usually, wet loads were identified by the presence of water droplets; these loads were repacked and resterilized. Given the pervasiveness of wet loads, and their impact on reprocessing times and costs, strategies to reduce their frequency are needed.
