Computer-Based Training for Immigrant Latinos with Limited Formal Education

Mexican immigrants working at a wholesale nursery were involved in developing user instructions for a computer-based instruction system. Sixty-one Latinos with 0 to 16 years of education completed user instructions delivered on the computer, and all but 3 completed training content about the nursery. Based on objective criteria, program use was rated as “somewhat easy” to “easy” for most participants with more than 3 years of education, whereas 50% of those with 0 to 2 years of education completed content with “difficulty” or “struggled.” Participants who completed the computer-based posttest (n =22) had a mean performance of 96%, which was significantly better than the performance of 87% (n = 18) on an oral pretest (p = .003, d = 1.02). Thus, computer-based instruction can effectively train immigrant Latinos who have very limited formal education.

Neurobehavioral performance in preschool children from agricultural and non-agricultural communities in Oregon and North Carolina

Organophosphate (OP) pesticides produce acute toxic effects but little is known about low-level chronic exposures. Latino children of agricultural workers have a high risk of exposure to pesticides because of the close proximity of their homes to fields where pesticides are applied and from take-home exposure. Neurobehavioral performance of preschool children from agricultural (AG) communities was compared to performance of those from non-agricultural (Non-AG) communities in Oregon and North Carolina. Seventy-eight children aged 48-71 months completed a battery of neurobehavioral tests two times, approximately 1 month apart. Multiple regression revealed that the AG children performed poorer on measures of response speed (Finger Tapping) and latency (Match-to-Sample) compared to the Non-AG children. These results demonstrate modest differences in AG children compared to Non-AG children that are consistent with functional effects seen in adults exposed to low concentrations of OP pesticides. Just as was the case following early research on adults poisoned by pesticides, this study points to the need for additional investigations to test the hypothesis that low-concentration OP exposures affect acquisition of test performance, response speed and latency in children of agricultural workers.

Development of a neurobehavioral battery for children exposed to neurotoxic chemicals

In recent years there has been heightened concern over the potential impact of environmental exposures on neurological function in children. Children are thought to be especially vulnerable to neurotoxic effects due to a number offactors including play behavior, differences in metabolism, and the development state of the brain. Performance tests from the computerized Behavioral Assessment and Research System (BARS) and other non-computerized tests have been combined to develop a brief battery that assesses multiple neurobehavioral functions in preschool children aged 4-6. Tests were selected to assess a variety of cognitive functions including attention, memory, motor speed and coordination and other executive functions. The battery has also been translated into Spanish and developed for use with Latino populations. Four to six-year-old children are particularly challenging because of the shorter attention span and lower motivation to complete an extended test session. When testing this group it is important to maintain the motivation of the child throughout the entire session in order to obtain accurate performance measures. A series of sequential pilot studies were used to select and develop appropriate methods and parameters for the tests in the battery. Although English-speaking children were able to complete the initial battery with minimal difficulties, several difficulties were encountered when the tests were administered to a Latino population. Cultural differences made some material inappropriate for testing due to unfamiliarity with the material, and in some cases items in a test had more than one correct translation which made administration difficult.
