Abstract
Recent studies have shown that propolis has on the oral cavity appreciable antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral actions, as well as anti-inflammatory, anaesthetic and cytostatic properties. In light of these studies, an assessment of the diffusion and permeation of caffeic acid phenetyl ester (CAPE) through porcine buccal mucosa was considered useful as a possible application in the stomatological field. To do so, a mucoadhesive topical gel was prepared to apply to the buccal mucosa. The gel was formulated in such a way as to improve the solubility of the propolis, conducting to an increase of the flux. The mucosal permeation of CAPE from the formulation was evaluated using Franz cells, with porcine buccal mucosa as septum between the formulation (donor compartment) and the receptor phase chamber. The diffusion through the membrane was determined by evaluating the amount of CAPE present in the receiving solution, the flux and the permeation coefficient (at the steady state) in the different formulations at set intervals. Qualitative and quantitative determinations were done by HPLC analysis. From the results, CAPE allowed a high permeability coefficient in comparison to the coefficient of other molecules, as expected from its physical-chemical structure. Moreover, the developed gel improved the CAPE flux approximately 35 times more with respect to an ethanol solution formulated at the same gel concentration. The developed gel was also tested in order to evaluate the mucoadhesive behaviour and comfort in vivo on 10 volunteers in a period of 8 h. The in vivo evaluation of mucoadhesive gel revealed adequate comfort and non-irritancy during the period of study and it was well accepted by the volunteers.

Abstract
This article demonstrates the development of nanofibrous cloths by electrospinning of renewable materials, i.e., curcumin-loaded 90% cellulose acetate (CA)/10% poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), for applications in regenerative medicine. The CA is derived from the biomass waste of the oil palm plantation (empty fruit bunch). The nanofiber scaffolds are characterized for the fiber morphology, microstructure, thermal properties, and wettability. The optimized smooth and bead-free electrospun fiber cloth contains 90% CA and 10% PCL in two curcumin compositions (0.5 and 1 wt%). The role of curcumin is shown to be two-fold: the first is its function as a drug and the second is its role in lowering the water contact angle and increasing the hydrophilicity. The hydrophilicity enhancements are related to the hydrogen bonding between the components. The enhanced hydrophilicity contributed to improve the swelling behavior of the scaffolds; the CA/PCL/Cur (0.5%) and the CA/PCL/Cur (1.0%) showed swelling of ~700 and 950%, respectively, in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The drug-release studies revealed the highest cumulative drug release of 60% and 78% for CA/PCL/Cur (0.5%) and CA/PCL/Cur (1.0%) nanofibers, respectively. The in-vitro studies showed that CA/PCL/Cur (0.5 wt%) and CA/PCL/Cur (1.0 wt%) nanofiber scaffolds facilitate a higher proliferation and expression of actin in fibroblasts than those scaffolds without curcumin for wound healing applications.

Abstract
We investigated the importance of calcium (Ca2+) influx in increasing the steady state concentrations of mRNAs coding for the pituitary peptides PRL, alpha, and TSH, LH, and FSH beta-subunits. Adult female rat pituitaries were dissociated, plated for 48 h, then inserted into perifusion chambers. Secretory responses were measured after 2 and 22 h of perifusion, and after 24 h, the cells were recovered, total RNA was extracted, and mRNAs were assayed by dot blot hybridization. The first experiment examined the effect of the Ca2+ channel blocker verapamil (100 microM) on the stimulatory action of pulsatile TRH (4 nM; 60-min interval) or GnRH (100 pM; 60-min interval) on pituitary mRNAs. TRH pulses induced a significant increase (49-56%) in PRL, alpha, and TSH beta mRNAs. Similarly, GnRH pulses stimulated a rise in alpha (64%) and FSH beta (50%) mRNAs, but not LH beta. The effects of pulsatile TRH or GnRH were eliminated when verapamil was added to the medium, suggesting that Ca2+ influx is critical to the stimulatory action of TRH or GnRH. The second experiment examined the effect of pulsatile vs. continuous increases in intracellular Ca2+ on pituitary mRNA expression. Pulsatile Ca2+ signals were produced by giving 60-min pulses of 50 mM KCl, Bay K 8644 (10 microM), or Bay K 8644 (10 microM; in the presence of 10 mM KCl in the injectate) and vehicle pulses to controls. Continuous increases in intracellular Ca2+ were induced by perifusion with medium containing the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 (20 microM), and these groups were compared to that receiving continuous verapamil. Pulsatile increases in Ca2+ influx (KCl or Bay K 8644) stimulated significant elevations in all mRNAs studied (36-74% increase vs. controls), with the exception of TSH beta. The magnitude of the mRNA responses to pulsatile Ca2+ (vs. controls) was similar to that observed after TRH and GnRH pulses. In contrast, only LH beta was increased by A23187 (42% increase vs. controls; P < 0.05). PRL and alpha mRNAs were selectively diminished by A23187 (57% and 83% decreases vs. controls, respectively; P < 0.05) and verapamil (67% and 60%; P < 0.05). The data show that expression of these pituitary genes is regulated by Ca2+ and that a pulsatile Ca2+ signal is required to stimulate PRL, alpha, and FSH beta (but not LH beta).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
The spectral assignations of all the main resonances in the 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra in DMSO-d6 or D2O are presented and reviewed for ten of the principal tetracyclines in therapeutic use: tetracycline, chlortetracycline, 6-demethylchlortetracycline, minocycline, oxytetracycline, methacycline, meclocycline, doxycycline, rolitetracycline and lymecycline. NMR techniques employed include: proton noise-decoupled spectra, off-resonance decoupled spectra, nuclear Overhauser enhancement and the INEPT technique (insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization transfer). 13C NMR is also examined as a means of detecting and identifying the principal degradation and isomerization products of tetracycline antibiotics. The analytical potential of 13C NMR is discussed with respect to quantitative analysis of impurities, studies on sites of protonation and metal-binding studies.

Abstract
Porphyrin macrocycles play an important role in designing of fluorophores with superior light harvesting properties similar to that of antennas in biological systems. In this paper, new Zn(II)porphyrin dyes were investigated to improve the performance of the YD2-o-C8 using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Effects of various substituted and anchoring groups on basic porphine and Zn(II)porphyrin derivatives were systematically studied at the B3LYP/LanL2DZ level. The absorption spectra of Zn(II)porphyrin derivatives bearing one, two and four anchoring groups in the meso-positions were also studied. The calculations showed that a molecule [5, 10, 15, 20-(4-carboxyphenylethynyl)porphyrinato]Zn(II) have large absorption cross-section than available in the existing porphyrin dyes. The results of these calculations would open up enormous possibilities to develop porphyrin dyes characterized by high absorption cross-section for various light harvesting applications.

Abstract
The chromatographic separation of tetracycline, oxytetracycline, 6-demethyl-chlortetracycline, methacycline and minocycline, and the common impurities of tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline has been optimised on a Hamilton PRP-1 column using citrate-phosphate buffer with propan-2-ol and tetrahydrofuran as organic modifiers. Column efficiency was approximately doubled by the inclusion of 1% v/v dichloromethane in the mobile phase.

Abstract
Novel molybdenum (Mo)-doped nickel oxide (NiO) Nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by using a simple sonochemical methodology and the synthesized NPs were investigated for antioxidant, and antibacterial applications. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the crystal systems of rhombohedral (21.34 nm) and monoclinic (17.76 nm) were observed for pure NiO and Mo-doped NiO NPs respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that the pure NiO NPs possess irregular spherical shape with an average particle size of 93.89 nm while the Mo-doped NiO NPs exhibit spherical morphology with an average particle size of 85.48 nm. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrum further indicated that the pure and Mo-doped NiO NPs exhibited strong absorption band at the wavelengths of 365 and 349 nm, respectively. The free radical scavenging activity of NiO and Mo-doped NiO NPs was also investigated by utilizing several biochemical assays. The Mo-doped NiO NPs showed better antioxidant activity (84.2%) towards ABTS. + at 200 µg/mL in comparison to their pure counterpart which confirmed that not only antioxidant potency of the doped NPs was better than pure NPs but this efficacy was also concentration dependant as well. The NiO and Mo-doped NiO NPs were further evaluated for their antibacterial activity against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) bacterial strains. The Mo-doped NiO NPs displayed better antibacterial activity (25 mm) against E. coli in comparison to the pure NPs. The synthesized NPs exhibited excellent aptitude for multi-dimensional applications.

Abstract
Ectopic thyroid gland tissue can occur either as the only detectable thyroid gland tissue or in addition to a normotopic thyroid gland. After a total thyroidectomy thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) can induce a compensatory volume increase of previously asymptomatic ectopic tissue. This hyperplastic ectopic tissue can occur as an unclear cervical space-occupying lesion. Prior to surgical exploration of an unclear cervical mass the possibility of ectopic thyroid tissue should be included in the differential diagnostic considerations.

Abstract
The key characteristics of the sliding mode control (SMC) are the ability to manage unmodeled dynamics with rapid response and the inherent robustness of parametric differences, making it an appropriate choice for the control of power electronic converters. However, its drawback of changing switching frequency causes critical electro-magnetic compatibility and switching power loss issues. This paper addresses the problem by proposing a dynamic integral sliding mode control for power converters having fixed switching frequency. A special hardware test rig is developed and tested under unregulated 12.5-22.5 V input and 30 V output. The experimental findings indicate excellent controller efficiency under wide range of loads and uncertain input voltage conditions. In addition, the findings indicate that the closed-loop system is robust to sudden differences in load conditions. This technique provides an improvement of 24.52 % in the rise time, 20.10 % in the settling time and 42.85 % in robustness of the controller as compared to conventional controllers. Furthermore, the comparison with the existing fixed-frequency sliding mode control techniques is presented in a tabular form.

Abstract
The heat enhancement in hybrid nanofluid flow through the peristaltic mechanism has received great attention due to its occurrence in many engineering and biomedical systems, such as flow through canals, the cavity flow model and biomedicine. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to discuss the hybrid nanofluid flow in a symmetric peristaltic channel with diverse effects, such as electromagnetohydrodynamics (EMHD), activation energy, gyrotactic microorganisms and solar radiation. The equations governing this motion were simplified under the approximations of a low Reynolds number (LRN), a long wavelength (LWL) and Debye–Hückel linearization (DHL). The numerical solutions for the non-dimensional system of equations were tackled using the computational software Mathematica. The influences of diverse physical parameters on the flow and thermal characteristics were computed through pictorial interpretations. It was concluded from the results that the thermophoresis parameter and Grashof number increased the hybrid nanofluid velocity near the right wall. The nanoparticle temperature decreased with the radiation parameter and Schmidt number. The activation energy and radiation enhanced the nanoparticle volume fraction, and motile microorganisms decreased with an increase in the Peclet number and Schmidt number. The applications of the current investigation include chyme flow in the gastrointestinal tract, the control of blood flow during surgery by altering the magnetic field and novel drug delivery systems in pharmacological engineering.

In the title molecule, C11H17NO3S, the S atom has a distorted tetrahedral geometry [maximum deviation: O—S—O = 119.08 (9)°]. In the crystal, molecules are connected by intermolecular N—H⋯O, O—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming layers of molecules aligned parallel to (110). The 2-methylpropan-1-ol group of the molecule is disordered over two positions with an 0.592 (4):0.408 (4) occupancy ratio.
