Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) analysis of African swine fever (ASF) virus purified by Percoll gradient centrifugation resolves 54 structural proteins, 30 in conventional IEF gels and 24 in NEPHGE gels, while only 26 structural proteins are separated by SDS-PAGE. The two main bands separated by SDS-PAGE, with mol wt 150K and 72K, correspond to single spots in 2D gels. Other bands, including major bands of 38K, 35K, 24K, 17K, and 15.5K mol wt, correspond to multiple proteins of the same molecular weight but different pI. One hundred six virus-specific proteins were resolved by 2D analysis, 59 in conventional IEF gels and 47 in NEPHGE gels. Thirty-five of the virus-specific proteins are early proteins, synthesized before DNA replication, and the remaining 71 proteins are late proteins. Early proteins belong to two groups: 11 transient early proteins are synthesized only early in infection and the other 24 are persistent early proteins, synthesized at both early and late phases. Treatment with cytosine arabinoside prevents the synthesis of late proteins and blocks the shut-off of the synthesis of transient early proteins. Eleven structural proteins are major early proteins and 28 are late proteins. The remaining 15 structural proteins migrate in 2D gels like cellular proteins. Three of these cellular proteins, with mol wt 58K, 56K, and 45K were identified by immunoblotting as alpha-tubulin, beta-tubulin, and actin, respectively.

Abstract
Extrinsic compression of the left main coronary artery (LMC) by the pulmonary artery (PA) is a very unusual and poorly understood entity, usually associated with the presence of adult congenital heart disease. We identified 12 patients (age range, 6 months to 55 years) with LMC stenosis (> or = 50%) presumably secondary to compression by a dilated main PA and related to various forms of heart disease (11 congenital, 1 pulmonary hypertension). In all cases, the main PA was dilated with the main PA/aortic root diameter increased (mean, 2.0; normal value, < or = 1.0), and in all but two, PA pressures were increased (> 30 mm Hg systolic). Left coronary trunk stenosis was usually visualized in only one angiographic view (best seen in 45 degrees left anterior oblique, 30 degrees cranial projection). The LMC also appeared to be inferiorly displaced and in close contact with the left aortic sinus (mean angle between sinus and LMC was 23 degrees +/- 13 degrees, a control group was 70 degrees +/- 15 degrees ). In one patient, surgical correction of the dilated PA was associated with a reduction in LMC stenosis from 85% to < 50% and less inferior left main displacement (from 25 degrees to 50 degrees ). Patients with a dilated main PA may exhibit extrinsic LMC compression leading to significant eccentric narrowing and downward displacement of the LMC. In the presence of significant dilatation of the main PA from any etiology, functional and/or anatomic studies should be performed to exclude significant LM obstruction.

Abstract
A stage-specific expressed gene has been isolated from a cDNA expression library of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices. The isolated clone contains the complete coding sequence. The corresponding protein (EgDf1) has a molecular weight of 15.5 kDa and is expressed at the tegumental level in the protoscolices, being undetectable in the germinal layer of the metacestode. This protein shares an important homology with a family of low-molecular weight proteins involved in the binding of hydrophobic ligands. This family includes a protein of Schistosoma mansoni (Sm 14) that has immunoprotective activity in rodents. Histochemical and metabolic data already reported for E. granulosus suggest that EgDf1 could be a molecular marker for early events in the process of protoscolex differentiation.

Abstract
Natural mineral (thermal) waters have been used for centuries as treatment for various diseases. However, the scientific background of such therapeutic action is mostly empiric and based on knowledge acquired over time. Among the various types of natural mineral waters, sulfurous thermal waters (STWs) are the most common type in the center of Portugal. STWs are characterized by high pH, poor mineralization, and the presence of several ions and salts, such as bicarbonate, sodium, fluoride, silica, and carbonate. Furthermore, these waters are indicated as a good option for the treatment of various illnesses, namely respiratory diseases (e.g., allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). From the sulfide species present in these waters, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) stands out due to its abundance. In healthy conditions, H2S-related enzymes (e.g., cystathionine β-synthase and cystathionine γ-lyase) are expressed in human lungs, where they have mucolytic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial roles, thus contributing to airway epithelium homeostasis. These roles occur mainly through S-sulfhydration, a post-translational modification through which H2S is able to change the activity of several targets, such as ion channels, second messengers, proteins, among others. However, in respiratory diseases the metabolism of H2S is altered, which seems to contribute somehow to the respiratory deterioration. Moreover, H2S has been regarded as a good biomarker of airway dysfunction and severity, and can be measured in serum, sputum, and exhaled air. Hence, in this review we will recapitulate the effects of STWs on lung epithelial-immune crosstalk through the action of its main component, H2S.

Abstract
Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) are candidate molecules for vaccines against several parasitic platyhelminths. A FABP from the cestode Echinococcus granulosus (EgDf1) was expressed in Salmonella vaccine strains as a C-terminal fusion to fragment C of tetanus toxin (TetC) by using expression vector pTECH. The fusion protein was equally expressed in several attenuated vaccine strains derived from bacteria with different genetic backgrounds and different attenuating mutations. Single-dose immunization experiments with the aroA Salmonella typhimurium strain SL3261 carrying the pTECH-EgDf1 construct were conducted with mice, using both the intravenous and the oral routes. Surprisingly, the antibody response to EgDf1 and the antigen-specific cytokine production in spleen cells were stronger in mice immunized orally. Furthermore, immune mouse sera strongly reacted with fixed sections of the worm's larval stage. Analysis of the isotype distribution of the specific anti-EgDf1 antibodies showed similar production of immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) and IgG2a together with specific IgA antibodies. In addition, stimulation of spleen cells from mice immunized with the different constructs with either Salmonella lysate, TetC, or EgDf1 showed that, together with Th1-related cytokines (gamma interferon and interleukin 2 [IL-2]), significant levels of a Th2 cytokine (IL-5) were produced specifically, indicating a Th2 component to the response to the Salmonella carrier and to the recombinant antigens. Salmonellae expressing the TetC-rEgDfl fusion are currently under evaluation as potential vaccines against E. granulosus.

Abstract
The cytotoxic activity of amino (3a-e), aza-1-antraquinone (4a-e) lapachol derivatives against Ehrlich carcinoma and human K562 leukemia cells was investigated. Cell viability was determined using MTT assay, after 48 (Ehrlich) or 96 h (K562) of culture, and vincristine (for K562 leukemia) and quercetin (for Ehrlich carcinoma) were used as positive controls. The results showed dose-dependent growth-inhibiting activities and that the amino derivatives were active against the assayed cells, whereas the 4a-e derivatives were not. The allylamine derivative 3a was the most active against Ehrlich carcinoma, with IC50 = 16.94 +/- 1.25 microM, and against K562 leukemia, with IC50 = 14.11 +/- 1.39 microM. The analogous lawsone derivative, 5a, was also active against Ehrlich carcinoma (IC50 = 23.89 +/- 2.3 microM), although the 5d and 5e derivatives showed lower activity. The interaction between 3a-d and calf thymus DNA was investigated by fluorimetric titration and the results showed a hyperchromic effect indicating binding to DNA as presented of ethidium bromide, used as positive control. The inhibitory action on DNA-topoisomerase II-a was also evaluated by a relaxation assay of supercoiled DNA plasmid, and the etoposide (200 microM) was used as positive control. Significant inhibitory activities were observed for 3a-d at 200 microM and a partial inhibitory action was observed for lapachol and methoxylapachol.

Abstract
Four fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) have been described in 4 parasitic platyhelminths: Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum, Fasciola hepatica and Echinococcus granulosus. FABPs form a multigenic family of cytosolic proteins widely distributed in metazoan tissues, the function of which is still poorly understood. These helminth proteins have recently received attention, since there are reports to indicate that S. mansoni and F. hepatica FABPs may be protective antigens. In addition, these proteins could play a major role in the parasites' life-cycles because platyhelminths are unable to synthesize de novo most of their lipids. We have undertaken phylogenetic and structural analyses of platyhelminth FABPs in an attempt to characterize features of biological relevance. Phylogenetically, these FABPs appear to be more closely related to those of vertebrate heart, mammary gland, muscle, retina, skin, brain and myelin, although no clear functional relationships were established between them. We describe several conserved motifs characteristic of specific groups of FABPs. Hydrophilicity, flexibility and accessibility analyses revealed several major putative epitopes for the E. granulosus FABP, EgDf1, that appear to be centred in loops of the EgDf1 3-dimensional structure modelled by molecular replacement.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticoccidial efficacy of a product containing coumestans from Eclipta alba. Experimental conditions were set up as to reproduce the environment conditions for husbandry adopted in commercial broiler farms. Broilers were raised in broiler chicken shed provided with feeders, drinkers, illumination and temperature control systems and floor covering to afford an adequate nourishing environment. Male Cobb broilers (240) were assigned to four experimental groups being each experimental group set apart in rice straw-covered shed isolated with wire mesh. One-day-old broilers were reared in a coccidian-free environment with ad libitum supply of filtered water and freely available standard feed, from the 1st to the 35th day of life. The T1 group received standard feed (negative control); T2 was treated with standard feed supplemented with 66 ppm of salinomycin (positive control); groups T3 and T4 had standard feed supplemented with the ethyl acetate fraction from methanolic extract of E. alba aerial parts, which contains the coumestans WL and DWL (120 and 180 ppm, respectively). The chicken broilers were individually infected with 2 × 104 oocysts of Eimeria tenella when they were 14 days old and were monitored weekly to evaluate zootechnical parameters such as weight gain and food conversion ratio. Counting of coccidial oocyst in chicken feces was assessed from random samples, from the 21st to 28th days of life, which corresponded to 7-14 days after the infection. Five chickens selected at random from each experimental group were subsequently euthanized at 21, 28 or 35 days of life to determine the lesion score in the cecal region and to excise a cecum portion for histopathological evaluation. The group treated with coumestans from E. alba presented an average weight gain and food conversion ratio higher than the negative control group and similar to the mean value of the positive control group. Coumestan-treated groups showed a significant decrease in the oocyst counting since the 21 th day of life and displayed a reduced number of macroscopic lesions. Histopathological evaluations of cecum fragments showed that both treatments induced the migration of defense cells at the site of infection. A severe destruction of the cecal lining was found in the intestinal tract of broilers fed with a coumestans dose of 180 ppm. Overall, our results validate the use of a phytotherapy containing E. alba coumestans at a dose of 120 ppm as a therapeutic or prophylactic agent against avian coccidiosis.

Abstract
EgFABP1 is a developmentally regulated intracellular fatty acid binding protein characterized in the larval stage of parasitic platyhelminth Echinococcus granulosus. It is structurally related to the heart group of fatty acid binding proteins (H-FABPs). Binding properties and ligand affinity of recombinant EgFABP1 were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using cis- and trans-parinaric acid. Two binding sites for cis- and trans-parinaric acid were found (K(d(1)) 24+/-4 nM, K(d(2)) 510+/-60 nM for cis-parinaric acid and K(d(1)) 32+/-4 nM, K(d(2)) 364+/-75 nM for trans-parinaric). A putative third site for both fatty acids is discussed. Binding preferences were determined using displacement assays. Arachidonic and oleic acids presented the highest displacement percentages for EgFABP1. The Echinococcus FABP is the unique member of the H-FABP group able to bind two long chain fatty acid molecules with high affinity. Structure-function relationships and putative roles for EgFABP1 in E. granulosus metabolism are discussed.

Abstract
In this report, we describe genomic sequencing and analysis of different West Nile virus strains isolated from mosquitoes in the south of Portugal (Alentejo and Algarve) at two different time points (1971 and 2004, respectively). Phylogenetic analysis indicated different origins for the two recorded introductions of WNV in our country, with strains segregating in different sub-clades within lineage 1a. PTRoxo (isolated in 1971) was found to be very similar to an Egyptian WNV strain isolated in 1951, while the viruses isolated in 2004 formed a statistically well-supported group with WNV strains isolated over the last decade in countries lining the Mediterranean (Morocco, Italy, and France). Analyses of the putative amino acid sequences showed all the main expected features described for viral mature proteins except for the absence of the N-glycosylation site in the envelope glycoprotein of PTRoxo, which may be reflected as attenuated neurovirulence and neuroinvasive phenotypes.

Abstract
Sushi restaurants have become quite popular in Europe, with an increase in the consumption of the sashimi speciality. Pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus have been reported in this kind of food. Controlling the presence and multiplication of L. monocytogenes is a challenge for food safety management systems owing to its ubiquitous presence and psychrotrophic growth. Bacteriophages have been used as pathogenic biocide agents for decades. The bacteriophage P100, present in LISTEX P100, was used in this study to understand the possibility of implementing a new critical control point for L. monocytogenes in sashimi preparation and sale. Different concentrations of LISTEX P100 were used for reduction of L. monocytogenes in inoculated samples at 3 and 22°C. The reduction in initial counts of 2 log CFU/g was effective in the first 24 h with the 8-log PFU/g inoculation. Promising results were obtained in assays with the 6-log CFU/g initial counts and the 8-log PFU/g inoculation, at 22°C, achieving a maximum reduction of 4.44 log CFU/g, compared with the control group. These results seem to confirm that bacteriophages can be an option in reducing the population of the L. monocytogenes pathogenic bacteria in sashimi, mainly in takeaway sales.

Abstract
AIM To compare conventional radiographic and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) findings with reference to the American Association of Endodontics and American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAE/AAOMR) joint position statement and to determine the effect of the CBCT on the initial diagnoses and treatment plans in a single-centre Postgraduate Endodontic Programme. METHODOLOGY The clinical CBCT scans of patients, treated at the Endodontic Department of the University of British Columbia, were reviewed for CBCT referrals by comparing them with corresponding radiographs. The features considered were periapical lesions, missed/extra canals, root fractures, complex anatomy, calcified canals and root resorption of tooth/teeth in question. Reasons for the CBCT prescriptions were assigned to 3 groups: to formulate the primary diagnosis, to confirm the diagnosis achieved by clinical examination and conventional radiographs, and to assist in treatment planning. Variables were compared statistically using chi-square and McNemar tests. RESULTS A total of 128 CBCT examinations were performed on 110 patients. No CBCT examination was performed more than once on the same tooth. Overall, 76% of CBCT examinations were performed on previously root filled teeth. CBCT images revealed a significantly higher incidence of periapical lesions (P = 0.002), missed canals (P < 0.001), vertical root fractures (P = 0.004) and complex anatomy (P = 0.008) than periapical radiographs. CBCT was prescribed most frequently to assist surgical treatment planning (62%) rather than for generating a diagnosis (9%) or confirming diagnoses (29%). Both the diagnosis (P = 0.001) and the treatment plan (P = 0.005) initially made by examining periapical radiographs were altered significantly by the subsequent CBCT examination by revealing information such as new periapical lesions, missed canals or involvement of buccal or lingual cortical bone. CONCLUSION CBCT examinations were prescribed mainly to assist treatment planning rather than for diagnosis. The majority of CBCT examinations were performed on previously root filled teeth. The additional information obtained from CBCT scans resulted in the alteration of the initial diagnoses as well as subsequent treatment plans in 59 out of 128 cases.

Abstract
Proteins from cerebrospinal fluid of chick embryos at 4-19 days of development were qualitative and quantitatively analyzed. The total protein concentration and the relative concentration of each protein fraction were calculated for each day. The main proteins found along development were immunoglobulin G, transferrin, alpha-fetoprotein, serum albumin, ovalbumin, prealbumin, and an unidentified component. alpha-Fetoprotein was found to be the major protein at 4-16 days, and serum albumin at 17-19 days of development. The unidentified fraction was present from 4 to 11 days; at day 5 it represented 28% of the total cerebrospinal fluid protein concentration.

Abstract
Previous studies from Guinea-Bissau (West Africa) have demonstrated a unique epidemiology with respect to both HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection. In order to evaluate the prevalence and dynamics of HIV-1 and HIV-2 subtypes in Bissau, the capital city of Guinea-Bissau, a cross-sectional study was set up using serological and molecular techniques. Plasma samples from 103 individuals were screened for HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies by ELISA and Western-blot. Seropositive results were confirmed by PCR amplification of proviral sequences in primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with env and LTR primer sets for HIV-2 and env, LTR and pol primers for HIV-1. A total of 38/103 individuals were HIV-seroreactive (four HIV-1, 15 HIV-2, 19 HIV-1/HIV-2). A total of eight out of 19 dually seropositive specimens showed double PCR amplification of HIV-1 and HIV-2 proviral sequences, accounting for 21% of the infected individuals. In the remaining 11 individuals either HIV-2 or HIV-1 sequences were detected, the majority (n=9) amplifying only HIV-2. These screening data demonstrate a high discrepancy between serology and PCR results for dually seroreactive samples, Western-blot giving an overestimation of double infection. Additionally, HIV-1 strains were subtyped by heteroduplex mobility assay (HMA) on the basis of gp120 sequences. Subtyping of HIV-2 was carried out by DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of env V3 molecular clones. For both HIV-1 and HIV-2 strains circulating in Bissau, our results indicate dominance of subtype A.

Abstract
EgDf1 is a developmentally regulated protein from the parasite Echinococcus granulosus related to a family of hydrophobic ligand binding proteins. This protein could play a crucial role during the parasite life cycle development since this organism is unable to synthetize most of their own lipids de novo. Furthermore, it has been shown that two related protein from other parasitic platyhelminths (Fh15 from Fasciola hepatica and Sm14 from Schistosoma mansoni) are able to confer protective inmunity against experimental infection in animal models. A three-dimensional structure would help establishing structure/function relationships on a knowledge based manner. 3D structures for EgDf1 protein were modelled by using myelin P2 (mP2) and intestine fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) as templates. Molecular dynamics techniques were used to validate the models. Template mP2 yielded the best 3D structure for EgDf1. Palmitic and oleic acids were docked inside EgDf1. The present theoretical results suggest definite location in the secondary structure of the epitopic regions, consensus phosphorylation motifs and oleic acid as a good ligand candidate to EgDf1. This protein might well be involved in the process of supplying hydrophobic metabolites for membrane biosynthesis and for signaling pathways.

Abstract
Experimental evidence of captopril-induced inhibition of sympathetic activity, mediated by decrease in angiotensin II production, is presented. The blood pressure, plasma catecholamine, plasma renin activity, and plasma aldosterone responses to a single dose of sublingual captopril in 23 patients with hypertensive emergencies were evaluated. The major correlation found was between the captopril-induced decrease in blood pressure and the decrease in plasma norepinephrine levels (r = 0.57, p less than 0.01). In another 11 hypertensive patients with normal or high renin levels, captopril lowered by 65 percent the increase in plasma norepinephrine induced by cold immersion of the forearm. In both circumstances, plasma renin and aldosterone levels changed in accordance with the expected inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme activity. These data suggest that, in selected circumstances in hypertensive patients, captopril exhibits a depressive influence on sympathetic activity along with the inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system.

Abstract
[35S]Methionine-labeled proteins from total or cytoplasmic extracts of Vero cells infected with African swine fever virus were chromatographed on native and denatured DNA-cellulose and DNA-binding proteins were analyzed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), by DNA binding to Western blots, or by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Thirteen virus-specific DNA-binding proteins were detected by one-dimensional analysis. Major species have molecular mass 44,000 (44K), 38K, 20K, 18K, 14K, 13K, and 12K. The remaining DNA-binding proteins are proteins with molecular mass 130K, 110K, 35K, 33K, 17K, and 14.5K. When viral DNA used in the binding assay the results were very similar but the 13K protein did not bind viral DNA. Seven other minor virus-specific DNA-binding proteins could be detected by two-dimensional analysis. This technique also enabled the assignment of virus-specific proteins. Seven of the virus-specific DNA-binding proteins are structural proteins. Twelve are late proteins, the remaining being early proteins synthesized before viral DNA replication. Most of the virus-specific DNA-binding proteins bind both to double-stranded and to single-stranded DNA. The 110K, 29K, and 18K DNA-binding proteins bind only to single-stranded DNA. Two virus-specific enzymatic activities, DNA polymerase and RNA polymerase, were present in the fractions separated by DNA-cellulose chromatography. The virus-specific single-stranded DNA nuclease did not bind to DNA.

Abstract
We have retrospectively studied the seroprevalence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Guinea-Bissau in a sample of sera collected from the whole country in 1980. We tested a total of 1248 individuals and found 11 individuals who were seropositive for HIV-2 but there were no HIV-1 seropositive samples. The mean age of the HIV-2 seropositive people was significantly higher than the age of the seronegative individuals. In the different areas surveyed, the HIV-2 seroprevalence ranged from 0 to 2.5%. A central region of the country, grossly centred in the capital city of Bissau, presented the highest prevalence of HIV-2 seropositivity (>2%), which contrasts with its virtual absence from the more remote rural areas located near the borders with the neighbouring countries. The overall seroprevalence found for HIV-2 in this study is 0.9% (1.8%, when considering the adult seroprevalence only), which proves that the virus was definitely circulating in Guinea-Bissau at the beginning of the 1980s.

Abstract
The V3 loop of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 is characterized by a high degree of genetic variation. To investigate the spectrum of HIV-2 variability in nature we have focused on the C2V3 region of Env and analyzed 108 viral sequences obtained from uncultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from 16 HIV-2-seropositive individuals from Bissau (Guinea-Bissau). The estimated values of genetic divergence between individuals were higher than those calculated from sequence information collected in a single individual. We have also found that the sequences surrounding the V3 loop contribute significantly to the overall genetic diversity of the C2V3 region of HIV-2 gp105, while the V3 loop itself seems to be rather conserved. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that all the individuals enrolled in this study were infected with HIV-2 subtype A viruses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, an increase in the consumption of Japanese food in European countries has been verified, including in Portugal. These specialities made with raw fish, typical Japanese meals, have been prepared in typical and on non-typical restaurants, and represent a challenge to risk analysis on HACCP plans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the type of restaurant, season and type of fish used on sashimi microbiota. METHODS Sashimi samples (n = 114) were directly collected from 23 sushi restaurants and were classified as Winter and Summer Samples. They were also categorized according to the type of restaurant where they were obtained: as typical or non-typical. The samples were processed using international standards procedures. RESULTS A middling seasonality influence was observed in microbiota using mesophilic aerobic bacteria, psychrotrophic microorganisms, Lactic acid bacteria, Pseudomonas spp., H2S positive bacteria, mould and Bacillus cereus counts parameters. During the Summer Season, samples classified as unacceptable or potentially Hazardous were observed. Non-typical restaurants had the most cases of Unacceptable/potentially hazardous samples 83.33%. These unacceptable results were obtained as a result of high values of pathogenic bacteria like Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus No significant differences were observed on microbiota counts from different fish species. CONCLUSION The need to implement more accurate food safety systems was quite evident, especially in the warmer season, as well as in restaurants where other kinds of food, apart from Japanese meals, was prepared.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess difficulties in filling the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Bladder Diary (ICIQ-BD), determining the most troublesome items and patients' characteristics (age, education level, and professional activity) related to these difficulties. METHODS A text composed of a clinical history of a fictitious patient with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) was designed. 95 healthy volunteers (49 females, 46 males, mean age 45.6 ± 17.3 years) were asked to fill in the ICIQ-BD according to the data from the fictitious clinical history. Filling errors were analyzed, and patients' demographic characteristics tested as predictors. RESULTS Bladder Sensation Score is the most problematic item of the ICIQ-BD, with only 38% of patients accurately filling this item. No association was found between total number of errors and age or education level, but participants working in less specialized professions had more difficulty in filling the BD (mean: 7.00 vs 3.94 errors, P= .002). CONCLUSION ICIQ-BD is a reliable tool to assess for LUTS, but filling the Bladder Sensation Score item was more likely to be incorrectly filled by manual workers and volunteers with less intellectually demanding current professions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The wavefront propagation velocity in the myocardium with fibrosis is characterized by the presence of deceleration zones and late activated zones, that are absent in the normal myocardium. Our aim was to study the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) endocardial activation duration in sinus rhythm, and assess the presence of deceleration zones, in patients with premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and in controls. METHODS We studied 29 patients with idiopathic PVCs from the outflow tract, subjected to catheter ablation that had an activation and voltage map of the RVOT in sinus rhythm. A control group of 15 patients without PVCs that underwent ablation of supraventricular arrhythmias was also studied. RVOT endocardial activation duration and number of 10 ms isochrones across the RVOT were assessed. Propagation speed was calculated at the zone with the higher number of isochrones per cm radius. Deceleration zones were defined as zones with >3 isochrones within 1 cm radius. Low voltage areas were defined as areas with local electrogram with amplitude <1.5 mV. RESULTS The two groups did not differ in relation to age, gender or number of points in the map. RVOT endocardial activation duration and number of 10 ms isochrones were higher in the PVC group; 56 (41-66) ms vs. 39 (35-41) ms, p = 0.001 and 5 (4-8) vs. 4 (4-5), p = 0.001. Presence of deceleration zones and low voltage areas were more frequent in the PVC group; 20 (69%) vs. 0 (0%), p < 0.0001 and 21 (72%) vs. 0 (0%), p < 0.0001. The wavefront propagation speed was significantly lower in patients with PVCs than in the control group, 0.35 (0.27-0.40) vs. 0.63 (0.56-0.66) m/s, p < 0.0001. Patients with low voltage areas had longer activation duration 60 (52-67) vs. 36 (32-40) ms, p < 0.0001, more deceleration zones, 20 (95%) vs. 0 (0%), p < 0.0001, and lower wavefront propagation speed, 0.30 (0.26-0.36) vs. 0.54 (0.36-0.66) m/s, p = 0.002, than patients without low voltage areas. CONCLUSION Right ventricular outflow tract endocardial activation duration was longer, propagation speed was lower and deceleration zones were more frequent in patients with PVCs than in controls and were associated with the presence of low voltage areas.

Abstract
Anabolic substances have been increasingly used by bodybuilders and athletes with the goal of improving performance and aesthetics. However, this practice has caused some concern to physicians and researchers because of unknowledge of consequences that the indiscriminate and illicit use of these substances can cause. Thus, this study analyzed the effects of two commercially available anabolic steroids (AS), Winstrol Depot® (Stanozolol) and Deposteron® (Testosterone Cypionate), in the neuronal density of limbic, motor and sensory regions on the cerebral cortex and in CA1, CA2, CA3 regions of the hippocampus. A total of 60 Swiss mice were used (30 males and 30 females), separated into three groups: control and two experimental groups, which received the AAS. From each brain, homotypic and semi-serial samples were taken in frontal sections from areas established for the study. The results showed that females treated with testosterone cypionate presented a reduction in all regions tested and the ones treated with Stanozolol showed a decrease in some hippocampal areas. Regarding male animals, stanozolol led to a decrease in neuron number in one hippocampal region. These data allow us to conclude that supra-physiological doses of steroids used in this study, can cause considerable damage to nervous tissue with ultrastructural and consequently behavioral impairment. These changes could interfere with the loss of physical yield and performance of athletes and non-athletes and may cause irreparable damage to individuals making irresponsible use of anabolic steroids.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the sources of Salmonella spp. in Alheira and how to trace it, by studying the way that Salmonella spp. is distributed across production lines, by applying multifactorial correspondence analysis to occurrence data, and through the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) molecular typing methods. METHODS AND RESULTS Four production lines, four batches of Alheira and 14 sampling sites were analysed over four sampling periods. Eighty-five Salmonella spp. isolates were obtained from the 896 microbial analyses performed. The basic occurrence analysis values, multiple correspondence analysis and PCR molecular typing methods confirmed that the presence of Salmonella spp. in Alheira was directly related to it being present in casings. Results obtained from PCR molecular typing added a measure of detail, highlighting potential cross-path contamination caused by contaminated surfaces. CONCLUSIONS The presence of Salmonella spp. in Alheira was a result of the use of contaminated casings, as well as cross-path contamination caused by contaminated surfaces. An analysis of the occurrence data indicated that these casings were the source of Salmonella spp. contamination in Alheira. PCR molecular typing methodology, which is known to have a greater discriminatory power and tracing capacity, indicated the presence of cross-path contamination. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THIS STUDY: Increased awareness of Salmonella spp. contamination sources and their spread across the production line helps shape the development of new strategies for controlling this pathogen.

Abstract
Sources and tracing of Staphylococcus aureus in alheira (garlic sausage) production were evaluated by multifactorial correspondence analysis (MCA) of occurrence data and a random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) on S. aureus isolates. Samples from four production lines, four different production batches, and 14 different sampling sites (including raw material, different contact surfaces, and several stages of alheira manufacturing) were analyzed at four sampling times. From the 896 microbial analyses completed, a collection of 170 S. aureus isolates was obtained. Although analysis of the occurrence data alone was not elucidative enough, MCA and RAPD-PCR were able to assess the sources of contamination and to trace the spread of this microorganism along the production lines. MCA results indicated that the presence of S. aureus in alheira was related to its presence in the intermediate manufacturing stages after heat treatment but before stuffing in the casings. It was also possible to associate a cross-contamination path related to handler procedures. RAPD-PCR typing in accordance to MCA results confirmed the cross-contamination path between the raw material and casings and the role of handlers as an important cross-contamination vehicle.
