Abstract
Whether differences in personality among populations really exist and, if so, whether they are only due to cultural and linguistic differences or have a genetically selected adaptive value, is a controversial issue. In this research, we compared three Italian populations living on three small archipelagos in the Tyrrhenian Sea (n = 993), with their corresponding neighbouring mainlanders (n = 598), i.e. sharing the same geographical origin, culture and language. We used an adjective‐based Big Five questionnaire in order to measure personality traits in four categories of individuals for each archipelago/mainland population: (1) original islanders; (2) non‐original islanders; (3) mainlanders and (4) immigrants to the islands. We further analysed original and non‐original islanders who had or had not emigrated from the islands. We found that islanders had different personality traits from mainlanders, the former being more conscientious and emotionally stable and less extraverted and open to experience. We also found that the subgroup of islanders whose ancestors had inhabited their island for about 20 generations in isolation (original islanders, n = 624) were less extraverted and open to experience than immigrants (n = 193). In contrast, immigrants retained the typical personality profile of the mainland populations. Lastly, emigrants from the islands (n = 209) were significantly more extraverted and open to experience than original and non‐original islanders who had never left their island (n = 741). We hypothesise that population differences in extraversion and openness to experience are more probably related to genetic differences which evolved rapidly, presumably through an active gene flow produced by selective emigration from the islands. Abstract
It has recently been proposed that hyperinsulinaemic insulin resistance and increased ovarian cytochrome P-450c17alpha activity, two features of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), are pathogenetically linked. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis of the linkage between hyperinsulinaemia and supranormal activity of cytochrome P-450c17alpha using the human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) challenge, which is a more direct ovarian stimulus than gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in detecting modifications in ovarian steroidogenesis. Eleven women with insulin resistance-related PCOS were studied. HCG (10 000 IU) was given i.m., and blood samples were obtained 0, 8, 12, 16 and 24 h thereafter. Next day, metformin was given at a dose of 500 mg three times a day for 30-32 days, at which time the pretreatment study was repeated. Two women ovulated after metformin treatment. The administration of metformin was associated with a decrease in area under the curve for insulin during a 2h, 75g oral glucose tolerance test, in plasma free testosterone concentrations and an increase in plasma sex hormone binding globulin concentration. The plasma 17-hydroxyprogesterone response to HCG was significantly lower after metformin treatment. The present study gives a direct demonstration that metformin leads to a reduction in stimulated ovarian cytochrome P-450c17alpha activity in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Dyslipidemia is one of the main risk factors for atherosclerosis, usually the underlying cause of cardiovascular diseases which are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. The aim of this study was to assess the effects and the advantages of a combined dietary supplementation with PUFA n-3, vitamin E, niacin and gamma-oryzanol on lipid profile, inflammatory status and oxidative balance. METHODS AND RESULTS Fifty-seven dyslipidemic volunteers were randomly assigned to receive: placebo (group A, 19 subjects); PUFA n-3 and vitamin E (group B, 18 subjects); the same as B plus gamma-oryzanol and niacin (group C, 20 subjects). Lipid profile, reactive oxygen species (ROS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), vitamin E, interleukin 1-beta (IL1-beta), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) were determined at baseline (T0) and after four months (T1). All dyslipidemic subjects showed, at baseline, oxidative stress and, after four months, all biochemical markers improved significantly in groups treated with dietary supplementation. Particularly in group C all lipid patterns improved significantly. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that the strategy of combining different compounds, which protect each other and act together at different levels of the lipid chain production, improves lipid profile, inflammatory and oxidative status, allowing us to reduce the dose of each compound under the threshold of its side effects.

Abstract
Nosocomial infection surveillance is common in the USA and in some European countries but in Italy few hospitals use it. In order to evaluate its usefulness in clinical practice we performed a one year prospective epidemiological study that included 178 patients, admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) for more than 48 h. Median ICU stay was 16 days. Trauma and neurological diseases accounted for 65% of admissions. The selected population had high severity scores and required a large number of invasive procedures for diagnosis and therapy. The most common infections were: pneumonia 46/1000 ventilator-days; urinary tract infections 17/1000 catheter-days; central venous catheter infections 14.5/1000 catheter-days with 1.7/1000 CVC-related sepsis; bacteraemic sepsis 12/1000 ICU-days. The most frequent pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, other Gram-negative aerobes and Candida spp. Antimicrobial resistance was substantial, with 68% methicillin-resistance in S. aureus and 76% of P. aeruginosa displaying antibiotic resistance. Severe sepsis or septic shock occurred in 30 patients (8/1000 ICU-days), and three patients died from septic shock of unknown origin (10% case fatality rate). There were no case fatalities for pneumonia and bacteraemic sepsis. Overall, ICU-acquired infections were not associated with an increased risk of death.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This research aimed to identify incidents of mothers in Italy killing their own children and to test an adaptive evolutionary hypothesis to explain their occurrence. METHODS 110 cases of mothers killing 123 of their own offspring from 1976 to 2010 were analyzed. Each case was classified using 13 dichotomic variables. Descriptive statistics and hierarchical cluster analysis were performed both for cases and variables, and significant differences between clusters were analyzed. RESULTS The Italian sample of neonaticides (killings of children within the first day of life) was found to satisfy all evolutionary predictions for an evolved behavioral, emotional and motivational pattern to increase fitness, showing a consistent profile for offending mothers. Relatively young, poor women with no partner kill their offspring non-violently, either directly or through abandonment, and they attempt to conceal the body. These women have no psychopathologies and never attempt suicide after killing their children. All neonaticide cases fall in a single cluster that is distinct from all other offspring killings by mothers. Infanticide (killing of children within the first year of life) and filicide (killing of children after the first year of life) do not significantly differ according to any of the variables measured. The common profile of mothers who have committed infanticide or filicide includes psychopathology, suicide or attempted suicide after killing their children, violent killing of their victims, and no attempt to conceal the victims' bodies. These results suggest that maternal infanticide and filicide represent an improper functioning of adaptation, and their profile are much more variable than those of neonaticide offenders. CONCLUSION Our study confirms that only neonaticide is an adaptive reproductive disinvestment, possibly evolved in the remote past, to increase the biological fitness of the mother by eliminating an unwanted newborn and saving resources for future offspring born in better conditions. Neonaticide is shown to be clearly distinct from infanticide and filicide and therefore should be approached, prevented, and judged differently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The debate continues as to whether Richter syndrome should be defined as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) because of a more malignant clone of neoplastic cells superimposed on preexisting chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or as the chance occurrence of two unrelated tumors. The cellular characteristics of the neoplastic clone involved in the CLL phase and the subsequent NHL were investigated in a patient in whom Richter syndrome developed. METHODS Cell analysis was performed with immunofluorescence, histologic analysis, DNA extraction, and Southern blot analysis. RESULTS The separated CLL and NHL B-cells from blood and bone marrow, as well as the neoplastic cells in autopsy specimens of the organs affected by NHL, particularly the brain, were found to express the same light chain of surface immunoglobulin (SIg). The change MD-->M in the SIg heavy-chain expression and the appearance of cytoplasmic IgMk suggested isotype switching simulating that observed on the final phases of primary B-cell differentiation. This hypothesis was confirmed by Southern blot analysis of DNA from blood cells in the CLL phase and in Richter transformation, which showed that the two cell populations had identical Ig gene rearrangement. CONCLUSIONS The NHL in the patient in this study represented a malignant progression of CLL, not a second lymphoid malignancy.

Abstract
The search for evolutionary forces shaping the diversity of human personality traits encouraged studies that have found that islanders are relatively closed and introverted, with little interest in the external world. The ‘personality gene flow’ hypothesis was proposed to explain the mechanism underlying this difference, suggesting that the frequency of alleles that influence islander personality traits might progressively increase in the gene pools on islands because of selective emigration of individuals not displaying these alleles. We genotyped 96 individuals from the Italian mainland and 117 from Giglio Island, whose residents were previously assessed regarding their personality traits. We genotyped three polymorphisms: the dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) exon 3 repeat region, the serotonin–transporter SLC6A4 5–HTTLPR indel and the dopamine transporter SLC6A3 DAT1 3′UTR repeat region. Only the DRD4 exon 3 repeat was hypothesised to show varying allele frequencies because this polymorphism could be associated with human migration and personality traits such as extraversion, openness and novelty seeking. As predicted, no differences in allele frequencies were found for the SLC6A4 and SLC6A3 polymorphisms, whereas significant differences were observed in the frequency of the DRD4 exon 3 alleles. The DRD4.2 repeat was more common in mainlanders, as expected, whereas the DRD4.7 allele was over–represented among islanders who never emigrated. This last result contradicts the suggested association of this allele with long–distance migrations. We suggest that emigration might have caused gene flow out the island that resulted in somewhat unpredictable changes in the frequencies of specific alleles, thus influencing islander personality traits. Abstract
Pedophilia is a disorder of public concern because of its association with child sexual offense and recidivism. Previous neuroimaging studies of potential brain abnormalities underlying pedophilic behavior, either in idiopathic or acquired (i.e., emerging following brain damages) pedophilia, led to inconsistent results. This study sought to explore the neural underpinnings of pedophilic behavior and to determine the extent to which brain alterations may be related to distinct psychopathological features in pedophilia. To this aim, we run a coordinate based meta-analysis on previously published papers reporting whole brain analysis and a lesion network analysis, using brain lesions as seeds in a resting state connectivity analysis. The behavioral profiling approach was applied to link identified regions with the corresponding psychological processes. While no consistent neuroanatomical alterations were identified in idiopathic pedophilia, the current results support that all the lesions causing acquired pedophilia are localized within a shared resting state network that included posterior midlines structures, right inferior temporal gyrus and bilateral orbitofrontal cortex. These regions are associated with action inhibition and social cognition, abilities that are consistently and severely impaired in acquired pedophiles. This study suggests that idiopathic and acquired pedophilia may be two distinct disorders, in line with their distinctive clinical features, including age of onset, reversibility and modus operandi. Understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of pedophilic behavior may contribute to a more comprehensive characterization of these individuals on a clinical ground, a pivotal step forward for the development of more efficient therapeutic rehabilitation strategies.

Abstract
Neurological disorders can be mis-diagnosed as psychiatric ones. This might happen to pedophilia emerging as a symptom of brain insult (i.e. acquired pedophilic behavior). This paper aims to delineate a behavioral profile that might help to identify defendants whose pedophilic behavior is likely to be the consequence of a neurological disorder. Through a systematic review of the literature, seventeen clinical and behavioral variables of the modus operandi and victimology that can distinguish between acquired and developmental pedophilic behavior have been collected. Seven of these were found to be consistent behavioral indicators (i.e. red flags) for acquired pedophilia. Cluster hierarchical analysis on the seventeen variables collected through the systematic review of the literature on cases of acquired pedophilic behavior was applied to a new dataset including 66 Italian closed cases of pedophilia. Stepwise regression and correlation analyses were carried out to further examine the differences between the clusters identified in the cluster analysis. Results revealed that the new sample was partitioned into two clusters. Individuals with ascertained acquired pedophilia were grouped together. The clusters widely differed for the prevalence of red flags (mean number of red flags in each cluster: 2.14 ± 0.79 vs 4.96 ± 0.93, p < 0.001), while no between cluster difference emerged for the other clinical and behavioral variables. Regression analysis provided a robust model that included the three most significant red flags that explain over 64.5% of the variance (absence of masking, spontaneous confession and offenders older age). An organic origin of pedophilic behavior should be suspected if red flags are present in a defendant charged with pedophilia. In those cases, an in depth trans-disciplinary neuroscientific investigation is advocated. The behavioral profile identified might help to provide a proper assessment of defendants.

Abstract
A standard approach to quantum computing is based on the idea of promoting a classically simulable and fault-tolerant set of operations to a universal set by the addition of "magic" quantum states. In this context, we develop a general framework to discuss the value of the available, nonideal magic resources, relative to those ideally required. We single out a quantity, the quantum-assisted robustness of magic (QROM), which measures the overhead of simulating the ideal resource with the nonideal ones through quasiprobability-based methods. This extends error mitigation techniques, originally developed for noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, to the case where qubits are logically encoded. The QROM shows how the addition of noisy magic resources allows one to boost classical quasiprobability simulations of a quantum circuit and enables the construction of explicit protocols, interpolating between classical simulation and an ideal quantum computer.

Abstract
Photodegradation is a key process in governing the residence time and fate of many agrochemicals in top soils. However, the basic knowledge of the photolytic transformation reactions of organic chemicals on soil surfaces is still very poor, particularly regarding the quantum yield. In this work we developed a relatively simple model for the quantification of direct photodegradation processes on porous media on the basis of the Kubelka-Munk model for radiative transfer. With the help of this model, the quantum yield was determined using two different approaches: (i) the evaluation of the disappearance rate of the compound in the whole layer and (ii) the evaluation of the reflectance change of the doped porous medium during irradiation. The first approach proved to be simplest when applied to opticallythin layers where the interference of diffusion kinetics from the nonirradiated part of the layerto the surface is minimal. Here, we report experimental results on the photodegradation of 4-nitroanisole and trifluralin on kaolinite and the first results on goethite. The quantum yield for 4-nitroanisole on kaolinite was found to be on the same order of magnitude as in water, whereas for trifluralin the quantum yield was 10 times smaller than in water. Recommendations for a revision of the presently used OECD/EPA test system are proposed.

Abstract
The kinetics of direct photochemical transformations of organic compounds in light absorbing and scattering media has been sparsely investigated. This is mostly due to the experimental difficulties to assess the major parameters: light intensity in porous media, the reaction quantum yield and the molar absorption coefficient of the adsorbed compound, epsilon(i) (lambda). Here, we propose a method for the determination of the molar absorption coefficient of compounds adsorbed to air-dry surfaces using the Kubelka-Munk model for the description of radiative transfer. To illustrate the method, the molar absorption coefficients of three compounds, i.e. 4-nitroanisole (PNA), the herbicide trifluralin and the flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE), were determined on air-dry kaolinite. The measured diffuse reflectance spectra were evaluated with the Kubelka-Munk model and with previously determined Kubelka-Munk absorption and scattering coefficients (k and s), for kaolinite. For all compounds the maximum absorption band was found to be red shifted and the corresponding epsilon(i) (lambda) values were significantly greater than those determined in solvents. Together with the absorption and scattering coefficient of the medium, the measured epsilon(i) (lambda) can be used to determine the quantum yield of the photochemical reaction in this medium from experimentally determined reaction kinetics.

Abstract
The proliferation patterns of bone marrow cells from 16 cases of acute nonlymphatic leukemia (ANLL) and 13 of dysmyelopoietic syndromes were analyzed with DNA-flow cytometry. In order to reduce the contamination by nonproliferating peripheral blood cells, all aspirates were submitted to a density centrifugation step. DNA content measurements were performed with a PHYWEICP 22 flow system apparatus. The distribution of cells in te cell cycle phases was calculated by means of an automated fitting procedure. No significant difference between the cell cycle distribution in ANLL and dysmyelopoietic syndromes was detectable. No relationship was observed between the size of the S phase compartment and the percentage of blasts in the original samples. Aspirates from ANLL were also cultured in vitro in liquid phase on dialysis membranes. A clear relationship was observed between the size of the phase compartment and in vitro cell growth since, with the exception of one case, all samples with less than 11% cells in S phase failed to proliferate in vitro. The proliferation profile of ANLL cells after 10 days in culture was similar to that of the original samples.

Abstract
Here we respond to Vasey et al.'s critical comments regarding our article, "Societal norms rather than sexual orientation influence kin altruism and avuncularity in tribal Urak-Lawoi, Italian, and Spanish adult males" (Camperio Ciani, Battaglia, & Liotta, 2015 , JSR doi:10.1080/00224499.2014.993748). The first regards the selection of the Urak-Lawoi population of Ko Lipeh, which is considered too modern and touristic to be adequate to test the kin selection and avuncular hypothesis for homosexuality. We provide historical evidence of the contrary, and show that the population at the inception of our 10 years research was indeed primitive and tribal, and probands actually grew and lived in such a society. Only a few years after the 2004 tsunami, the island was developed and invaded by mass tourism. The second comment regarded the statistical analysis and interpretation of data. We show that we consistently and conservatively considered the effects of all confounding variables, both with comparative tests, and by a series of multivariate regression analyses. This was the orthodox procedure approved by all other reviewers. In conclusion, even addressing these comments, we maintain that the kin selection and avuncularity hypothesis for homosexuality is not supported by empirical data even in this primitive and tribal society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social factors and a lack of clearself-awareness may prevent women from explicitly reporting their non-heterosexuality, and implicit measures could provide more reliable data. AIM This study examined non-heterosexuality and gynephilia in a large, global sample of women using implicit and explicit methods. METHODS A sample of 491 women participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed a biographical questionnaire, the Autobiographical-Implicit Association Test, the Sexual Preference-Implicit Association Test (SP-IAT), and an explicit measure of sexual orientation. In a follow-up study, 263 participants were recontacted and completed the Autobiographical Sexual Orientation IAT and answered additional questions about their sexual behavior and preferences related to the stimuli on the SP-IAT. OUTCOMES The main outcome measures were D-scores on implicit association tests and scores on explicit measures of sexual orientation and behaviors. RESULTS Implicit measures showed a higher rate of gynephilia (67.8%) than explicit non-heterosexuality (19.6%), with consistent results across continents. The findings suggest that women may be attracted to other women without necessarily desiring sexual encounters with them. Furthermore, the results suggest a degree of fluidity in sexual preferences in the female population. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS Studying the prevalence of gynephilia and non-heterosexuality in adult women can inform the development of health promotion programs tailored to women's diverse sexual experiences and preferences. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS Strengths include the global sample and the use of both implicit and explicit measures. Limitations involve the cross-sectional web-based design, potential sample biases, and aspects related to the validity of the SP-IAT. CONCLUSION Implicit measures of non-heterosexuality appear to be less tied to social factors than explicit assessments. In women, gynephilia may not necessarily serve as a proxy for non-heterosexuality. Moreover, women seem to exhibit greater fluidity in sexual preferences and behaviors than men.

Abstract
Radiosensitivity of lysosomes was investigated in vitro in different gaseous atmospheres. Results show a higher sensitivity when X-irradiation was performed in nitrous oxide. Possible reasons for this observation are considered.
