Abstract
The use of plant gum-based biodegradable bioplastic films as a packaging material is limited due to their poor physicochemical properties. However, combining plant gum with synthetic degradable polymer and some additives can improve these properties. Keeping in view, the present study aimed to synthesize a series of bioplastic films using Moringa oleifera gum, polyvinyl alcohol, glycerol, and citric acid via thermal treatment followed by a solution casting method. The films were characterized using analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, AFM, TGA, and DSC. The study examined properties such as water sensitivity, gas barrier attributes, tensile strength, the shelf life of food, and biodegradability. The films containing higher citric acid amounts showed appreciable %elongation without compromising tensile strength, good oxygen barrier properties, and biodegradation rates (>95%). Varying the amounts of glycerol and citric acid in the films broadened their physicochemical properties ranging from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity and rigidity to flexibility. As all the films were synthesized using economical and environmentally safe materials, and showed better physicochemical and barrier properties, this study suggests that these bioplastic films can prove to be a potential alternative for various packaging applications.

Abstract
Size-selected dianionic lead clusters Pb_{n}^{2-}, n=34-56, are stored in a Penning trap and studied with respect to their decay products upon photoexcitation. Contrary to the decay of other dianionic metal clusters, these lead clusters show a variety of decay channels. The mass spectra of the fragments are compared to the corresponding spectra of the monoanionic precursors. This comparison leads to the conclusion that, in the cluster size region below about n=48, the fission reaction Pb_{n}^{2-}→Pb_{n-10}^{-}+Pb_{10}^{-} is the major decay process. Its disappearance at larger cluster sizes may be an indication of a nonmetal to metal transition. Recently, the pair of Pb_{10}^{-} and Pb_{n-10}^{-} were observed as pronounced fragments in electron-attachment studies [S. König et al., Int. J. Mass Spectrom. 421, 129 (2017)IMSPF81387-380610.1016/j.ijms.2017.06.009]. The present findings suggest that this combination is the fingerprint of the decay of doubly charged lead clusters. With this assumption, the dianion clusters have been traced down to Pb_{21}^{2-}, whereas the smallest size for the direct observation was as high as n=28.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of computed tomography-texture analysis (CTTA) in differentiating between in-situ and minimally-invasive from invasive adenocarcinomas in subsolid lung nodules (SSLNs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed 49 SSLNs in 44 patients. There were 27 men and 17 women with a mean age of 63±7 (SD) years (range: 47-78years). For each SSLN, type (pure ground-glass or part-solid) was assessed by consensus and CTTA was conducted independently by each observer using a filtration-histogram technique. Different filters were used before histogram quantification: no filtration, fine, medium and coarse, followed by histogram quantification using mean intensity, standard deviation (SD), entropy, mean positive pixels (MPP), skewness and kurtosis. RESULTS We analyzed 13 pure ground-glass and 36 part-solid nodules corresponding to 16 adenocarcinomas in-situ (AIS), 5 minimally invasive adenocarcinomas (MIA) and 28 invasive adenocarcinomas (IVA). At uni- and multivariate analysis CTTA allowed discriminating between IVAs and AIS/MIA (P<0.05 and P=0.025, respectively) with the following histogram parameters: skewness using fine textures and kurtosis using coarse filtration for pure ground-glass nodules, and SD without filtration for part-solid nodules. CONCLUSION CTTA has the potential to differentiate AIS and MIA from IVA among SSLNs. However, our results require further validation on a larger cohort.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a standard treatment for patients who are unable to empty the bladder. In the absence of the urethra or if catheterization through the urethra is problematic, a continent vesicostomy is used as a catheterizable conduit. The Malone procedure is an established treatment option for children with neurogenic constipation and fecal incontinence. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to report the authors' experience with continent catheterizable conduits (CCCs) in children, to review the results and to determine the efficacy of the technique, with an emphasis on continence and the need for revision. MATERIAL AND METHODS The retrospective study involved children who underwent catheterizable conduit procedures from 2000 to 2015. Two kinds of continent stomas were performed: Mitrofanoff vesicostomies for CIC and Malone antegrade continence enemas (MACEs). The 115 patients treated included 66 girls and 49 boys. A total of 134 operations were performed; 62 were Mitrofanoff vesicostomies and 72 were Malone appendicostomies. In 19 cases, both Mitrofanoff and Malone appendicostomies were formed out of 1 appendix divided into 2 parts. In 5 children vesicocutaneous stomas were constructed using Monti's procedure, and in 1 it was constructed from an intussuscepted ileal loop. In 27 patients Malone procedures were performed laparoscopically. RESULTS The mean follow-up period was 8.6 years. There was no serious morbidity in relation to the surgery. In 9 children local wound infection was noted, and in 9 others stomal stenosis developed. Out of the 62 children with catheterizable vesicostomies, 59 were continent. The MACE procedure was successful in all 72 patients; problems with constipation and fecal incontinence were resolved in all cases. None of the laparoscopies needed conversion. CONCLUSIONS Continent catheterizable conduits help patients achieve both fecal and urinary continence. Laparoscopy is effective in performing the Malone procedure. Stoma-related complications could be avoided using end-to-side appendix anastomoses to the skin. Stomal incontinence is rare even when a simplified technique is employed, using the appendix without cecoplication.

The effect of additives on release and in vitro skin retention of flavonoids from emulsion and gel semisolid formulations. Int J Cosmet Sci 2017; 39:442-449. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of two different additives (propylene glycol (PG) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400)) on release and in vitro skin retention of quercetin and chrysin from semisolid bases (amphiphilic creams and acidic carbomer gels). METHODS For obtaining semisolid formulations, flavonoids were pre-dissolved in the liquid (PG or PEG 400) or directly suspended in the semisolid base. Three chrysin formulations ('cream 0', 'PG-cream' and 'PEG 400-cream') and five quercetin formulations ('cream 0', 'PG cream', 'PEG 400 cream', 'gel 0' and 'PG gel') were prepared. The release studies were carried out in Franz diffusion cells by means of a cellulose membrane. The porcine ear skin was used in in vitro skin retention studies. RESULTS The dissolution was a prerequisite to increase the release rates of tested flavonoids from obtained semisolid formulations. The cumulative amount of chrysin released after 6 h from 'PEG 400 cream' containing partly dissolved form of that flavonoid was higher than that from 'cream 0' or 'PG cream' containing its suspended form. The formulations containing quercetin dissolved in PG ('PG cream', 'PG gel') or PEG 400 ('PEG 400 cream') exhibited higher release rates of that flavonoid than corresponding semisolid suspensions ('cream 0' or 'gel 0'). The effects of both liquid additives (PG and PEG 400) on the cumulative amount of quercetin released after 6 h were comparable. However, there was no correlation between the release rate and the skin retention. The amounts of the flavonoids found in the skin were strongly affected by the type of the used solvent. While PG increased the skin retention of both flavonoids, PEG 400 had no effect on chrysin skin retention and delayed quercetin skin absorption. CONCLUSION The proper choice of the solvent added to the semisolid base is crucial for enhanced skin delivery of the tested flavonoids. PG is more efficient absorption promoter than PEG 400 of both chrysin and quercetin.

Abstract
Adenocarcinoma is the most common histologic type of lung cancer. Recent lung adenocarcinoma classifications from the International Association for the Study of Lung cancer, the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society (IASLC/ETS/ERS, 2011) and World Health Organization (WHO, 2015) define a wide range of adenocarcinoma types and subtypes featuring different prognosis and management. This spectrum of lesions translates into various CT presentations and features, which generally show good correlation with histopathology, stressing the key role of the radiologist in the diagnosis and management of those patients. This review aims at helping radiologists to understand the basics of the up-to-date adenocarcinoma pathological classifications, radio-pathological correlations and how to use them in the clinical setting, as well as other imaging-related correlations (radiogenomics, quantitative analysis, PET-CT).

Abstract
Despite numerous applications of microspheres, few works devoted to the preparation of microspheres containing cardiac medications have been published. This study presents the potential of receiving microspheres containing losartan potassium, based on a matrix containing Eudragit L30D55. The study focuses on the possibilities of controlled release of losartan potassium from microspheres in order to reduce the dosage frequency, and also provides information on the effect of the addition of excipients to the quality of the microspheres. Microspheres are monolithic, porous or smooth microparticles ranging from 1 to 500 microns in size. For the preparation of microspheres containing losartan potassium, the spray-drying method was used. The performed study confirmed that the spray-drying technology used to obtain microspheres meets the criteria of size and morphology of the microparticles. The assessment of the kinetics of losartan potassium release from the examined microspheres demonstrated that the release profile followed the first- and/or zero-order kinetics. The use of spray-drying techniques as well as Eudragit L30D55 polymer matrix to obtain the microspheres containing losartan potassium makes it possible to obtain a product with the required particle morphology and particle size ensuring the release of the active substance up to 12 h.

Abstract
Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths due to cancer in France. More than half of lung cancers are discovered at an advanced-stage. New anticancer treatment strategies (i.e., the so-called personalized or targeted therapy) have recently been introduced and validated for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in addition to or in association with standard chemotherapy. Personalized therapy includes tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), antiangiogenic treatments and immunotherapy. Because these treatments may be responsible for atypical thoracic adverse effects and responses as compared to standard chemotherapy, RECIST 1.1 criteria may be inadequate to evaluate the responses to these agents. The goal of this article was to review personalized treatment strategies for NSCLC, to consider the therapy-specific responses and thoracic complications induced by these new therapeutic agents and finally to discuss future directions for the personalized assessment of tumor response.

Abstract
In multiple injuries, features of bleeding from solid organs mostly involve the liver, spleen and kidneys and may be treated by embolization. The indications and techniques for embolization vary between organs and depend on the pathophysiology of the injuries, type of vascularization (anastomotic or terminal) and type of embolization (curative or preventative). Interventional radiologists should have a full understanding of these indications and techniques and management algorithms should be produced within each facility in order to define the respective place of the different treatment options.

Abstract
Understanding the nature of interactions is regarded as one of the biggest challenges in projects related to complex adaptive systems. We discuss foundations for interactive computations in interactive intelligent systems (IIS), developed in the Wistech program and used for modeling complex systems. We emphasize the key role of risk management in problem solving by IIS. The considerations are based on experience gained in real-life projects concerning, e.g., medical diagnosis and therapy support, control of an unmanned helicopter, fraud detection algorithmic trading or fire commander decision support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate inter-reader agreement for the detection of pleural and parenchymal abnormalities using CT in a large cross-sectional study comprising information on individual cumulative exposure to asbestos. METHODS The project was approved by the hospital ethics committee, and all patients received information on the study and gave their written informed consent. In 5511 CT scans performed in a cohort of retired workers previously exposed to asbestos and volunteering to participate in a multiregional survey programme (Asbestos Related Diseases Cohort, ARDCO), double randomised standardised readings, triple in case of disagreement, were performed by seven trained expert radiologists specialised in thoracic imaging and blind to the initial interpretation. Inter-reader agreement was evaluated by calculating the κ-weighted coefficient between pairs of expert readers and results of routine practice and final diagnosis after expert reading. RESULTS κ-Weighted coefficients between trained experts ranged from 0.28 to 0.52 (fair to good), 0.59 to 0.86 (good to excellent) and 0.11 to 0.66 (poor to good) for the diagnosis of asbestosis, pleural plaques and fibrosis of the visceral pleura, respectively. κ-Weighted coefficients between results of routine practice and final diagnosis after expert reading were 0.13 (poor), 0.53 (moderate) and 0.11 (poor) for the diagnosis of asbestosis, pleural plaques and fibrosis of the visceral pleura, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Interpretation of benign asbestos-related thoracic abnormalities requires standardisation of the reading and trained readers, particularly for participants asking for compensation, and with a view to the longitudinal survey of asbestos-exposed workers.

Abstract
A general aim of the research was to develop a technology of manufacturing microspheres with losartan potassium as an active substance, and Eudragit L30D55 as a matrix with the use of spray drying technique. During the first step of the study, optimal values of parameters in spray drying process were established (i.e., operating temperature, peristaltic pump performance, aspiration value). Those values have a crucial effect on morphological parameters, and the size and homogeneity of received particles. In the obtained microspheres, the activity of excipients, which modify morphological properties of microspheres, were tested. Additionally, we studied the impact of the type and amount of plasticizer, as well as the amount of an adopted polymer in proportion to dry matter of losartan potassium, on quality of final product. Triethyl citrate and citric acid, plasticizers tested in reported studies, were also verified. A detailed study of the influence of both plasticizers on the qualities of microspheres containing losartan potassium on Eudragit L30D55 matrix indicated a positive influence of triethyl citrate and a negative influence of citric acid on morphological properties, shape and size of particles. The application of optimal parameters of spray drying and triethyl citrate as a plasticizer in the amount of 10 to 15% allows to obtain microspheres from 1.27 to 7.24 μm.

Abstract
Background Long-term treatment with gonadoliberin analogs is used to block the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The use of these agents is generally considered to be safe; however, some observations suggest the possibility of adverse effects. Material/Methods We investigated whether a 3-months administration of a low dose (6 μg/kg b.w.) of dalarelin – a new agonist, and cetrorelix – a known antagonist of GnRH to female rats causes morphological changes in pituitary gland, ovaries, uterus and liver (HE and VG staining); effects on pituitary, hepatic and blood enzyme activities (histochemical and kinetic methods, respectively), and on the blood lipid profile (colorimetric methods); and to what extent these changes are reversible. Results Applying analogs effectively inhibited ovulation, affected the uterine endometrium and changed histological appearance of the liver (e.g., steatosis). They altered activities of marker enzymes of cellular respiration, gluconeogenesis and intracellular digestion in the liver and, partially in the pituitary gland, caused undesirable changes in the activities of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine kinase, and a concentration of cholesterol HDL fraction and triglycerides in the blood. Both morphological and enzymatic effects were more evident after antagonist administration; changes in the blood lipid profile were more evident after agonist administration. In both analogs histological and enzymatic changes persisted a relatively long time after the discontinuation of the treatment. Conclusions The low dose of dalarelin and cetrorelix is sufficient to cause limited damage of hepatic cells and may modify the function of pituitary, ovaries, uterus and liver as well as other organs, even after discontinuation of the treatment.

Abstract
In the pathogenesis of chronic otitis media (COM), much attention is paid to the molecular mechanisms of local inflammatory reactions in which mast cells (MCs) may be involved due to their role not only in allergic but also inflammatory processes. The aim of this study was to assess the density of mast cells in chronic otitis media in relationship to different clinical courses of COM, bacterial infections and types of disease. The MCs expression was measured immunohistochemically in paraffin-embedded granulation tissue specimens taken during surgery, by staining with a monoclonal antibody against tryptase. The density of tryptase-positive mast cells was lower in tissue samples from the group with a good clinical course than in those from the group with poor healing and recurrence (p = 0.006). There were no differences between the groups of patients with granulomatous and cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media (p = 0.66) or between the groups of patients with and without bacterial infection (p = 0.30), although the density of mast cells was lower for those with Pseudomonas aeruginosa/Proteus sp./ /Staphylococcus MRSA infection. In conclusion, the expression of mast cells in chronic otitis media granulation tissue was found to differ depending on the clinical course of the disease, but not on bacterial infection or type of COM. This may suggest that mast cells contribute to the maintenance of the inflammatory process, but not to antibacterial defense in chronic otitis media.

Expression of arachidonate metabolism enzymes and receptors in nasal polyps of aspirin-hypersensitive asthmatics. Int Arch Allergy Immunol 2011; 157:354-62. [PMID: 22123288 DOI: 10.1159/000329744] [Citation(s) in RCA: 26] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/31/2010] [Accepted: 05/27/2011] [Indexed: 11/19/2022] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of rhinosinusitis in aspirin-exacerbated airway disease is closely linked to the disequilibrium in arachidonic acid metabolism. Although considerable amounts of data concerning impaired eicosanoid production are available, the precise mechanism and pathogenesis of the disease are still unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess the expression of enzymes belonging to the arachidonic acid cascade and receptors for arachidonate derivative metabolites in nasal polyps from aspirin- hypersensitive (AH) and aspirin-tolerant (AT) patients with rhinosinusitis. METHODS Cells expressing cysteinyl leukotriene (CysLT) receptors (CysLT(1) and CysLT(2)), arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase, leukotriene B(4) receptor type 1, E-prostanoid receptors (EP(2) and EP(4)), cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 were detected by immunocytochemistry in nasal polyps obtained from 10 AH patients and 18 AT patients. RESULTS There was a significantly higher density of cells expressing CysLT(1) and CysLT(2) receptors in nasal polyps from AH patients than from AT patients (p < 0.001). In contrast, the density of cells expressing EP(2) receptor and COX-2 was significantly lower in AH patients than in AT patients (p < 0.02). The number of COX-2-positive epithelial cells was significantly reduced in AH polyps (p < 0.04). CONCLUSIONS The elevated number of nasal polyp cells expressing CysLT receptors and lack of cells expressing EP(2) receptor and COX-2 may be related to a more severe course of hyperplastic rhinosinusitis in aspirin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Nonimmune hydrops fetalis is observed with the frequency of 1:3000 cases diagnosed pre- and postnatally. In the following paper the authors analyzed the course of pregnancy complicated by fetal ascites and polyhydramnios with the appearance of colonic ileus and they presented the postnatal condition of the baby The preliminary diagnosis was confirmed after birth and the newborn was operated in the second day of his life. The congenital small bowel atresia was qualified as a III B type (Grossfeld qualification), which is called the "pagoda" syndrome [3]. The colonic atresia is located then around the superior mesenteric vessels, which leads to colonic necrosis (Figure 1).

Abstract
The fluorescent probe, 2-hydroxynaphthalene(dodecylo)-6-sulfonamide (NSDA) bound selectively to shear plane of various electrostatic charges was synthesized and its photophysical properties have been investigated by means of steady state fluorescence and nanosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. Our experimental data allowed us to determine the excited state proton transfer (ESPT) rate and equilibrium constants of NSDA bound to micelles and to estimate the electric potential value (Ψ) at the particle surface. The spatial dependence of proton movement velocity through electric double layer (EDL) of micelles has been thoroughly analyzed. In this article, a new approach of estimating the values of the micelle potential (Ψ(R)) from the excited state proton transfer rate constant of the fluorescent probe bound at a certain distance (R) to a micellar surface has been proposed. The Ψ(R) values, obtained in this way, are compared with electrophoretic values of the particle potential (ζ). Our results on electrophoretic potentials and the reaction course of the ESPT in colloidal environment may contribute to a deeper understanding of micellar interactions and behavior of the living cells in contact with various diluted substances such as pharmacological drugs, hormones, proteins, and other colloidal particles.

Abstract
AbstractGold-nickel multilayer films with periods of 1.2 - 4.6 nm were deposited on silicon substrates by magnetron sputtering, and plan and cross-sectional specimens were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The cross-sectional specimens revealed well-defined layering and columnar growth features that extended through the film thickness. Dark striations extending normal to the layers were attributed to diffraction contrast from defect strain fields. Diffraction patterns showed that the films were highly textured and that short-period films had a single fcc structure, while long-period films separated into three fcc structures. High-resolution images of the layer interfaces showed local regions of epitaxy partitioned by regions of disorder.Indentation tests using a Nanoindenter, a depth-sensing indentation device, were performed to measure the elastic modulus and hardness of the films. No modulus enhancement was detected, and a small variation in hardness was measured.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Growth disturbances and developmental malformations of external genitalia, such as hypospadias, bifid scrotum and micropenis, coexisting with non-palpable testes, may develop as a result of primary endocrinological dysfunctions as well as an effect secondary to chromosomal aberrations. Therefore, patients with these symptoms require specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. DESIGN AND METHODS We present an example of TTE as a presentation of karyotype abnormalities. Clinical presentation - 9.5 year old boy presented with hypospadias, bilateral cryptorchidism and right inguinal hernia and short stature. RESULTS Endocrine test showed low testosterone levels with adequate gonadal response. Laparoscopy was performed and revealed the presence of TTE. CONCLUSIONS The presence of mosaic karyotype with abnormal Y chromosome does not exclude a possibility of testis migration disorders, including TTE, caused by other (possibly genetic) factors. Laparoscopy is a technique of choice for diagnosis and treatment in cases of cryptorchidism.

Lack of association between aspirin-triggered 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid release and mast cell/eosinophil activation in nasal polyps from aspirin-sensitive patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanism of aspirin sensitivity in patients with asthma and rhinosinusitis has been attributed to arachidonic acid metabolism abnormalities. OBJECTIVE We aimed to test whether aspirin-triggered generation of 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) in nasal polyp dispersed cells (NPDCs) from aspirin-sensitive patients is associated with activation of inflammatory cells. METHODS Polyps were obtained from 11 aspirin-sensitive and 19 aspirin-tolerant patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. NPDCs were stimulated by aspirin or calcium ionophore. Levels of 15-HETE, leukotriene (LT) C4, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), and tryptase were measured in NPDC supernatant. RESULTS NPDCs from aspirin-sensitive patients contained more eosinophils (14% vs 9%, P < .05) and released 2.4-fold more ECP (P < .01) at baseline. Stimulation with aspirin (200 microM) resulted in a significant increase in 15-HETE generation only in tissue from aspirin-sensitive patients (mean increase, 82%) but did not induce any increase in the release of LTC4, ECP, or tryptase. Preincubation with calcium ionophore resulted in significantly enhanced generation of 15-HETE, ECP, tryptase, and LTC4 in patients from both groups. Incubation of NPDCs with misoprostol inhibited aspirin-induced 15-HETE generation in aspirin-sensitive patients and calcium ionophore-induced 15-HETE, ECP, and tryptase release in both aspirin-sensitive and aspirin-tolerant patients. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that aspirin-induced 15-HETE generation in nasal polyps from aspirin-sensitive patients is not associated with activation of mast cells and eosinophils. Misoprostol has a potent inhibitory effect on the activation of cells derived from the site of nasal mucosal inflammation, regardless of sensitivity to aspirin.

Abstract
UNLABELLED In otosclerosis patients the most common procedure followed at Otosurgical Dept. Medical University of Lodz is stapedotomy with insertion of teflon-piston prosthesis. When surgery is finished a whisper hearing test is done from the 1 meter distance for brief intraoperative hearing improvement assessment. There is a number of patient who report subjective intraoperative hearing improvement which is not confirmed by postoperative pure-tone audiometry (2-3rd post-op day). THE AIM OF THE STUDY was the analysis of factors influencing stapedotomy (teflon-piston procedure) patients in which intraoperative hearing improvement was not confirmed by postoperative pure-tone audiometry. MATERIAL AND METHOD Retrospective analysis of postoperative hearing results in patients who underwent stapedotomy (teflon-piston operation) at the Otosurgical Dept. Medical University of Lodz from 2005 to 2009. RESULTS The total number of 142 stapedotomies were analyzed. In 27 ears no hearing improvement was reported (19.1%). Among them 18 reported intraoperative hearing improvement not confirmed on postoperative pure-tone audiometry and 9 cases intraopertively reported no hearing improvement. Patients in Group A (hearing improvement 1-2 month post stapedotomy)--12 cases (44.4%) with hearing improvement confirmed by pure-tone audiometry and Group B--5 cases (55.6%) in which no sign of hearing improvement in pure-tone audiometry was reported. CONCLUSION In patients who intraopertively reported hearing improvement not supported by the pure-tone audiometry the following factors seem to play a vital role: a) strong suggestion and willingness of improvement after surgical treatment, b) specific condition of the whisper hearing test at the operating room environment, c) patient's stress during the surgery and strong fear of possible revision surgery.

Abstract
Tumors of the trachea and central bronchi can be benign or malignant. Clinical presentation may be confusing, particularly in benign tumors that can be misdiagnosed as asthma or chronic bronchitis. Chest radiography has many limitations and is often considered unremarkable in patients with tumors of the central airways; therefore, multidetector CT (MDCT) has become the most useful noninvasive method for diagnosing and assessing the central airways. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of imaging of the tumors of the trachea and central bronchi. We emphasize the crucial role of MDCT and postprocessing techniques in assessing neoplasms of the central airways.

Abstract
Localized ground-glass opacities (GGOs) have been recently individualized and account for between 2.9% and 19% of all pulmonary nodules detected in high-risk patients included in CT screening series for lung cancer. These opacities, nodular, lobular or flat, correspond to benign lesions (localised infectious and inflammatory diseases, focal interstitial fibrosis, and atypical alveolar hyperplasia) or malignant lesions (bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, early-stage adenocarcinoma and sometimes metastases). Localized GGOs are more likely to be malignant than solid nodules and prognosis is related to the percentage of the ground-glass component. However, doubling time of pure localized malignant GGOs is longer than mixed localized malignant GGOs and even longer than the doubling time of solid malignant nodules. Therefore, localized GGOs warrant a dedicated diagnostic workup.
