Abstract
Background Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a bioactive lipid with a wide biological activity. Previous studies have shown its potential usefulness as a diagnostic marker for ovarian cancer. The aim of the study was to investigate which factors may influence plasma LPA concentrations in healthy subjects and to propose reference values. Methods The study group consisted of 100 healthy subjects. From all of them the blood samples were taken at 7 a.m. (fasting state). From 40 volunteers additional blood samples were taken at 2 p.m., at 8 p.m. and at 2 a.m. next morning. Concentrations of LPA were measured in plasma samples using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Analysis of samples from 100 healthy volunteers showed significant influence of sex and age on plasma LPA. The reference range for the plasma LPA concentration corrected for age and sex, determined at 2.5–97.5 percentile interval is 0.14–1.64 μM. LPA correlates positively with BMI, serum total cholesterol, triacylglycerols, uric acid and negatively with estimated glomerular filtration rate and serum albumin. Concentration of LPA at 2 a.m. was lower than at 2 p.m. There were not any significant differences between plasma LPA at 7 a.m. and any other time of the day. Conclusions Plasma LPA is associated with demographic, anthropometric and biochemical parameters. It seems that LPA concentrations have no specific circadian rhythm and the time of donation and fasting state have marginal effect on plasma LPA. These findings may be helpful in future incorporation of LPA as a diagnostic marker.

Abstract
Cultured human breast carcinoma cell lines are important models for investigating the pathogenesis of breast cancer. Their use, however, is limited because of loss of expression of breast-specific markers and the development of a dedifferentiated phenotype after continuous culture. PMC42 is a unique human breast carcinoma line, previously shown to express secretory and myoepithelial markers. We have induced PMC42 cells to form hollow organoids in culture, similar to in vivo breast structures, using a combination of hormones including estrogen, progesterone, dexamethasone, insulin, and prolactin in combination with a permeable extracellular matrix. The organoids comprised polarized cells located around a central lumen. Expression of beta-casein was demonstrated in cells within organoids using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, Western blot analysis, and confocal immunofluorescence. In this in vitro system, milk-specific gene expression was induced through hormone and matrix interactions which may be similar to those operating in vivo. PMC42 is a novel model for investigations into the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis and differentiation in the human breast.

Abstract
Two P-type ATPases, MNK and WND were recently shown to be defective in the human disorders of copper transport, Menkes disease and Wilson disease respectively. These proteins are important in copper homeostasis but their full physiological function has not been established. This study uses the human breast carcinoma line, PMC42, to investigate copper transport in the mammary gland. Northern blot analysis indicated that both MNK and WND mRNA are expressed in these cells. Western blot analysis with an MNK-specific antibody demonstrated a band of approx. 178 kDa, close to the expected size of 163 kDa. Treatment of PMC42 cells with lactational hormones (oestrogen and progesterone for 3 days followed by dexamethasone, insulin and prolactin for a further 3 days) did not produce an obvious increase in MNK expression as measured by Northern and Western blots. By using indirect immunofluorescence with the MNK antibody, the intracellular distribution of MNK was found to be predominantly perinuclear, consistent with Golgi localization. Punctate staining was also seen in a smaller proportion of cells, suggesting that some MNK is associated with endosomes. Treatment of PMC42 cells with lactational hormones increased the intensity of the perinuclear and punctate fluorescence. Exposure of cells to 100 mM copper resulted in the dispersion of the fluorescence towards the periphery of the cell. The results suggest a role for MNK in the secretion of copper into milk and that PMC42 cells are a valuable model for investigating the detailed cellular function of MNK and WND.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is defined as the persistent imbalance between the activity of toxic reactive forms of both oxygen and nitrogen and the antioxidant defense. In low concentrations, they are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Still, their excessive amount contributes to the damage of the biomolecules, consequently leading to various pathologies of the organism. Due to the lipid-rich brain structure, enormous oxygen consumption, and the lack of a sufficient antioxidant barrier make it highly susceptible to oxidative imbalance. Hence, oxidative stress has been linked to various psychiatric disorders. These diseases include all behavioral, emotional, and cognitive abnormalities associated with a significant impediment to social life. Each of the diseases in question: Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder, is characterized by excessive oxidative stress. Considerable damages to DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids, and mitochondrial dysfunction, are observed. All conditions show increased lipid peroxidation, which appears to be typical of psychiatric disorders because the brain contains large amounts of these types of molecules. In addition, numerous abnormalities in the antioxidant defense are noted, but the results of studies on the activity of antioxidant enzymes differ significantly. The most promising biomarkers seem to be GSH in Alzheimer's disease as an early-stage marker of the disease and thioredoxin in schizophrenia as a marker for therapy monitoring. Data from the literature are consistent with the decrease in antioxidants such as vitamin C, E, uric acid, albumin, etc. Despite these numerous inconsistencies, it seems that oxidative stress is present in the course of psychiatric diseases. Still, it cannot be conclusively determined whether it is the direct cause of development, a consequence of other abnormalities at the biochemical or molecular level, or the result of the disease itself.

Abstract
The Menkes copper ATPase (MNK) is a copper efflux ATPase that is involved in copper homeostasis. Little is known about the intracellular localization and cell-specific function of the MNK in human tissues. To investigate a possible role for this protein in lactation, we measured its expression in sections of tissue from nonlactating and lactating human breast. Western blot analysis showed that MNK expression was greater in lactating tissue than in nonlactating tissue. By confocal immunofluorescence, the MNK was detected in luminal epithelial cells of the alveoli and ducts but not in myoepithelial cells. In the nonlactating breast epithelial cells, the MNK had a predominantly perinuclear distribution. In lactating breast tissue, the distribution of the MNK was markedly altered. Lactating epithelial cells showed a granular, diffuse pattern, which extended beyond the perinuclear region of the cell. This pattern was similar to that observed in a previous study in which cultured CHO cells were exposed to high copper concentrations. Our results suggest that relocalization of the MNK is a physiological process, which may be mediated by copper levels in the breast or by hormones and other events taking place during lactation. A vesicular pathway for copper from the Golgi into milk, similar to that of calcium, is proposed.(J Histochem Cytochem 47:1553-1561, 1999)

Abstract
Stem cells have been the subject of research for years due to their enormous therapeutic potential. Most neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD) are incurable or very difficult to treat. Therefore new therapies are sought in which autologous stem cells are used. They are often the patient's only hope for recovery or slowing down the progress of the disease symptoms. The most important conclusions arise after analyzing the literature on the use of stem cells in neurodegenerative diseases. The effectiveness of MSC cell therapy has been confirmed in ALS and HD therapy. MSC cells slow down ALS progression and show early promising signs of efficacy. In HD, they reduced huntingtin (Htt) aggregation and stimulation of endogenous neurogenesis. MS therapy with hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) inducted significant recalibration of pro-inflammatory and immunoregulatory components of the immune system. iPSC cells allow for accurate PD modeling. They are patient-specific and therefore minimize the risk of immune rejection and, in long-term observation, did not form any tumors in the brain. Extracellular vesicles derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSC-EVs) and Human adipose-derived stromal/stem cells (hASCs) cells are widely used to treat AD. Due to the reduction of Aβ42 deposits and increasing the survival of neurons, they improve memory and learning abilities. Despite many animal models and clinical trial studies, cell therapy still needs to be refined to increase its effectiveness in the human body.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) are bioactive lysophospholipids involved in the pathogenesis of renal diseases, especially the renal fibrosis. Plasma LPC concentrations in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are lower or similar to those observed in control groups, but less is known about the LPA concentrations. The main aim of the study was the analysis of associations of chronic kidney disease and renal replacement therapy with the plasma LPA concentrations. We have also analyzed the relationship between the plasma concentrations of LPA and LPC. MATERIAL AND METHODS Study group consisted of 110 patients with CKD in stages G3-G5 according to the KDIGO guidelines and was divided into four subgroups: treated conservatively (CT, 30 patients), on hemodialysis (HD, 30 patients), on peritoneal dialysis (PD, 30 patients) and renal transplant recipients (RT, 20 patients). In HD the blood was collected immediately before (HD D1) and after the dialysis (HD D2). In RT the blood was collected immediately before (RT D1) and 3-14 days after the transplantation (RT D2). The control group (Con) consisted of 50 healthy volunteers. Plasma concentrations of LPA and LPC were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS In CT, PD and RT D2 plasma concentrations of LPA were significantly higher, compared to Con. In HD, LPA levels did not differ compared to Con and they were significantly lower compared to PD (HD D1 and HD D2), RT D2 (HD D1 and HD D2) and CT (HD D1). However, in most of patients concentrations of LPA were within the range of reference values established in healthy volunteers. Concentrations of LPC were significantly lower in almost all patients subgroups, compared to Con, except in PD. There were no significant correlations between plasma concentrations of LPA and LPC in any of patients subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Presence of CKD is associated with increased plasma LPA levels and the hemodialysis therapy reduces this influence. However, only in a small percentage of patients with CKD, LPA concentrations are out of the reference range, which makes LPA not useful as a diagnostic marker for CKD. Further studies are needed to confirm and explain observed relationships.

Abstract
Impairments in cognitive functions are one of the main features of schizophrenia. A variety of factors can influence the extent of cognitive deficits. In our study, we examined the severity of cognitive deficits at different stages of the disease and the relationship between psychopathological symptoms and cognitive functions. We recruited 32 patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP), 70 with chronic schizophrenia (CS), and 39 healthy controls (HC). Psychopathological symptoms were evaluated with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and cognitive functions were measured with the MATRICS Cognitive Consensus Battery (MCCB). Cognitive deficits were present in both FEP and CS participants. CS individuals had lower overall scores and poorer working memory; however, clinical variables appeared to play a significant role in these scores. In FEP, disorganization correlated negatively with verbal and visual learning and memory, social cognition, and overall score; negative symptoms negatively correlated with social cognition. In CS participants, disorganization correlated negatively with speed of processing, reasoning, problem solving, and overall score; negative symptoms were negatively correlated with speed of processing, visual learning, memory, and overall score; positive symptoms were negatively correlated with reasoning and problem solving. Our findings indicate that psychopathological symptoms have a significant impact on cognitive functions in FEP and CS patients.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is associated with disrupted integrity of white matter microstructure of a variety of brain regions, especially the corpus callosum (CC). Chronic subclinical inflammation is considered to be one of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of this disease, and increased levels of peripheral inflammatory markers are often observed in schizophrenia patients. Therefore, we decided to investigate whether the integrity of the corpus callosum is correlated with levels of these markers. A total of 50 patients with stable chronic schizophrenia (SCH) and 30 controls (CON) were enrolled in the study. All participants underwent psychiatric evaluation, neuroimaging, and blood sampling including the measurement of serum concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), interleukin-10 (IL - 10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Additional potentially related factors, such as age, gender, BMI, smoking, disease duration, and treatment were included in the analysis. Significantly higher IL-6 and IFN-γ levels were observed in SCH compared to CON. In SCH, IFN-γ was positively correlated with mean diffusivity of region 2 of the CC. In CON, IL-6 was inversely correlated with fractional anisotropy of region 1 of the CC. These results support the potential influence of peripheral inflammatory markers on the integrity of the CC in schizophrenia, but require verification in longitudinal studies.

Abstract
The superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) is a white matter bundle that connects the frontal areas with the parietal areas. As part of the visuospatial attentional network, it may be involved in the development of schizophrenia. Deficit syndrome (DS) is characterized by primary and enduring negative symptoms. The present study assessed SLF integrity in DS and nondeficit schizophrenia (NDS) patients and examined possible relationships between it and psychopathology. Twenty-six DS patients, 42 NDS patients, and 36 healthy controls (HC) underwent psychiatric evaluation and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). After post-processing, fractional anisotropy (FA) values within the SLF were analyzed. Psychopathology was assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Brief Negative Symptom Scale, and Self-evaluation of Negative Symptoms. The PANSS proxy for the deficit syndrome was used to diagnose DS. NDS patients had lower FA values than HC. DS patients had greater negative symptoms than NDS patients. After differentiating clinical groups and HC, we found no significant correlations between DTI measures and psychopathological dimensions. These results suggest that changes in SLF integrity are related to schizophrenia, and frontoparietal dysconnection plays a role in its etiopathogenesis. We confirmed that DS patients have greater negative psychopathology than NDS patients. These results are preliminary; further studies are needed.

Abstract
The ZIP family of metal transporters is involved in the transport of Zn(2+) and other metal cations from the extracellular environment and/or organelles into the cytoplasm of prokaryotes, eukaryotes and archaeotes. In the present study, we identified twin ZIP transporters, Zip11 (Npun_F3111) and Zip63 (Npun_F2202) encoded within the genome of the filamentous cyanobacterium, Nostoc punctiforme PCC73120. Sequence-based analyses and structural predictions confirmed that these cyanobacterial transporters belong to the SLC39 subfamily of metal transporters. Quantitative real-time (QRT)-PCR analyses suggested that the enzymes encoded by zip11 and zip63 have a broad allocrite range that includes zinc as well as cadmium, cobalt, copper, manganese and nickel. Inactivation of either zip11 or zip63 via insertional mutagenesis in N. punctiforme resulted in reduced expression of both genes, highlighting a possible co-regulation mechanism. Uptake experiments using (65)Zn demonstrated that both zip mutants had diminished zinc uptake capacity, with the deletion of zip11 resulting in the greatest overall reduction in (65)Zn uptake. Over-expression of Zip11 and Zip63 in an E. coli mutant strain (ZupT736::kan) restored divalent metal cation uptake, providing further evidence that these transporters are involved in Zn uptake in N. punctiforme. Our findings show the functional role of these twin metal uptake transporters in N. punctiforme, which are independently expressed in the presence of an array of metals. Both Zip11 and Zip63 are required for the maintenance of homeostatic levels of intracellular zinc N. punctiforme, although Zip11 appears to be the primary zinc transporter in this cyanobacterium, both ZIP's may be part of a larger metal uptake system with shared regulatory elements.

The human breast contains two epithelial lineages, luminal epithelial and myoepithelial. Specific patterns of expression of intermediate filaments have previously been demonstrated in the resting breast. To determine how terminal differentiation and lactation influenced expression of intermediate filaments in breast epithelial cells, we used Western blot analysis to measure the levels of vimentin, alpha-smooth muscle actin, keratin 14, and keratin 18 in the resting and lactating breast. Confocal immunofluorescence was used to determine the subcellular site of localization of the intermediate filaments. Vimentin was localised to myoepithelial cells in both the resting and lactating gland. There was a four-fold increase in vimentin protein levels in lactating tissue relative to resting tissue, and this may be related to increased cellular activity of the myoepithelial cells which surround secretory alveoli. Alpha-smooth muscle actin and keratin 14 were detected in myoepithelial cells, and similar levels of expression were found in lactating and resting tissue. In the resting breast, keratin 18 and keratin 8 were detected in luminal epithelial cells in a filamentous form, whereas in lactating tissue it was present in a punctate form in luminal cells and also seen as granules in the lumen of alveoli. Our results indicate that intermediate filament expression patterns are altered in the lactating human breast, and this may reflect their role in the fully functional gland.

Abstract
Some symptoms of schizophrenia might be present before full-blown psychosis, so white matter changes must be studied both in individuals with emerging psychosis and chronic schizophrenia. A total of 86 patients—12 ultra-high risk of psychosis (UHR), 20 first episode psychosis (FEP), 54 chronic schizophrenia (CS), and 33 healthy controls (HC)—underwent psychiatric examination and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a 3-Tesla MRI scanner. We assessed fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) of the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILS). We found that CS patients had lower FA than FEP patients (p = 0.025) and HC (p = 0.088), and higher MD than HC (p = 0.037) in the right SLF. In the CS group, we found positive correlations of MD in both right ILF (rho = 0.39, p < 0.05) and SLF (rho = 0.43, p < 0.01) with disorganization symptoms, as well as negative correlation of FA in the right ILF with disorganization symptoms (rho = −0.43, p < 0.05). Among UHR individuals, we found significant negative correlations between MD in the left ILF and negative (r = −0.74, p < 0.05) and general symptoms (r = −0.77, p < 0.05). However promising, these findings should be treated as preliminary, and further research must verify whether they can be treated as potential biomarkers of psychosis.

Abstract
Deficit syndrome (DS) is a subtype of schizophrenia characterized by primary persistent negative symptoms. The corpus callosum (CC) appears to be related to psychopathology in schizophrenia. This study assessed white matter integrity in the CC using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in deficit and non-deficit schizophrenia (NDS) patients. We also investigated the psychopathological dimensions of schizophrenia and their relationship to CC integrity. Fifteen DS patients, 40 NDS patients, and 30 healthy controls (HC) underwent psychiatric evaluation and neuroimaging. We divided the CC into five regions and assessed their fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD). Psychopathology was assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. DS patients had lower FA than NDS patients and HC, and higher MD in Region 5 of the CC than did HC. NDS patients had higher MD in Region 4 of the CC. The patient groups differed in terms of negative symptoms. After differentiating clinical groups and HC, no significant correlations were observed between DTI measures and psychopathological symptoms. Our results suggest that DS and NDS are characterized by minor impairments of the posterior CC. We confirmed that DS patients have greater negative psychopathology than NDS patients. Our results are preliminary, and further studies are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a systemic disease affecting many organs. Progression of renal failure aggravates ongoing inflammation and increases oxidative stress. In the final stage of CKD, it is necessary to use renal replacement therapy. A side effect of dialysis therapy is the synthesis of proinflammatory factors and increased oxidative stress, which activates platelets and immune cells. AIM OF THE STUDY To determine the regenerative potential of platelets in patients with CKD based on the analysis of the relationships between substances with potential regenerative action, as well as analysis of the influence of the type of renal replacement therapy used on regeneration of platelets. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study group consisted of 117 patients. Based on the type of therapy used, patients were divided into four groups: hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplant patients, and conservative treatment (30, 30, 27, and 30 patients). The control group consisted of 30 healthy volunteers. The concentrations of IGF-1, TGF-β, and PDGF-B in the blood serum were measured by ELISA methods. RESULTS It was shown that renal replacement therapy significantly influences the concentration of platelet growth factors (IGF-1: p = 0.025 and PDGF-B: p = 0.012). There was a relationship between the type of renal replacement therapy and the duration of dialysis, and the concentration of IGF-1, PDGF-B (p < 0.00001, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The type of renal replacement therapy has a different effect on the concentration of platelet-derived growth factors IGF-1 and PDGF-B. PD patients had the highest concentrations of all growth factors, and this may be due to the presence of inflammation induced by dialysis-related advanced end-products of glycosylation (AGE).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The antifungal activity of 13 arylaldoxime ester and ether derivatives was tested against 4 dermatophytes Trichophyton mentagrophytes (TM), Microsporum canis (MC); M. cookei, and M. gypseum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Structures of all new compounds prepared from aryl aldehydes were established by spectral means. The tests were performed on the Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) substrate. The sensitivity of the dermatophyte strains towards oxime derivatives was established by determining MIC and MFC values. RESULTS The tested compounds showed a moderate fungicidal activity reaching 100% inhibition rate at 1% concentration. The activity against M. canis of 4 derivatives was higher than the activity of a reference drug clotrimazole. CONCLUSION A novel group of biologically active compounds was introduced. Simple aldoxime derivatives can be developed into a new class of antifungals.

Abstract
Although regenerative and inflammatory processes are involved in the etiopathogenesis of many psychiatric disorders, their roles are poorly understood. We investigate the potential role of stem cells (SC) and factors influencing the trafficking thereof, such as complement cascade (CC) components, phospholipid substrates, and chemokines, in the etiology of schizophrenia. We measured sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), and CC cleavage fragments (C3a, C5a, and C5b-C9; also known as the membrane attack complex) in the peripheral blood of 49 unrelated patients: 9 patients with ultra-high risk of psychosis (UHR), 22 patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP), and 18 healthy controls (HC). When compared with the HC group, the UHR and FEP groups had higher levels of C3a. We found no significant differences in hematopoietic SC, very small embryonic-like stem cell (VSEL), C5a, S1P, or SDF-1 levels in the UHR and FEP groups. However, among FEP patients, there was a significant positive correlation between VSELs (CD133+) and negative symptoms. These preliminary findings support the role of the immune system and regenerative processes in the etiology of schizophrenia. To establish the relevance of SC and other factors affecting the trafficking thereof as potential biomarkers of schizophrenia, more studies on larger groups of individuals from across the disease spectrum are needed.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of polymorphisms within the promoters of the MAO-A and the 5-HTT (SLC6A4) genes on the severity of anxiety and depressive disorder symptoms, and adaptation to the disease in patients with reproductive tract cancer. Methods This study involved a group female patients treated at the Department of Gynecological Surgery and Gynecological Oncology of Adults and Adolescents of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The inclusion criteria for the study were advanced ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer, as well as treatment in the form of cytoreductive therapy and chemotherapy. The following standardized research tools were used to collect empirical data: Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer. Results The study included 139 women diagnosed with endometrial cancer (63%) or ovarian cancer (37%). Assessment of the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms in the studied group of patients depending on genotype did not show statistically significant differences. However, among patients with genotype MAO-A 4/4, the constructive style prevailed over the destructive one, and the most frequently chosen strategy was positive redefinition. In the case of patients with the 5-HTT gene polymorphism, the most frequently chosen strategies were anxious preoccupation and positive redefinition. Conclusion Searching for the relationship between genetic factors and the strategies adopted to cope with cancer requires intensive research. Undoubtedly, the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms has an impact on adaptive behavior and the process of onco-logical treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is conflicting evidence on impulsivity and its potential relationship with inhibitory control in schizophrenia. This study therefore aimed to identify differences in impulsivity and cognitive and motor inhibition between patients with deficit (DS) and non-deficit (NDS) schizophrenia and healthy controls (HC). We also explored the relationships between impulsivity and different dimensions of inhibitory control in all studied groups. METHODS The sample comprised 28 DS patients, 45 NDS patients, and 39 age-matched HC. A neuropsychological battery was used. RESULTS DS patients scored lower in venturesomeness, while those with NDS scored higher in impulsiveness compared to HC. In addition, both groups of patients scored higher on measures of cognitive and motor inhibition, including those relatively independent of information processing speed (although the results were slightly different after adjusting for IQ and/or years of education). Correlations between impulsivity and cognitive inhibition emerged in DS patients, while links between impulsivity and motor inhibition were observed in HC. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest the presence of deficits in experimentally assessed inhibitory control in schizophrenia patients, with predominant impulsivity in the NDS population. In addition, impulsivity may affect the cognitive control of inhibition in deficit schizophrenia. Nevertheless, due to the preliminary nature of these findings, they require further empirical verification in future research.

Abstract
Trichoscopy is a diagnostic tool for hair and scalp diseases. It was recently shown that it also allows the identification of features associated with disorders that typically don't affect the scalp. The aim of this article was to analyze and outline the usefulness of trichoscopy in suspecting such diseases. Connective tissue diseases were the most investigated systemic diseases in regard to trichoscopy. The most common features of systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, and dermatomyositis are thick arborizing and tortuous vessels. Avascular areas are present in systemic sclerosis. Spermatozoa-like vessels may be observed in cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, while salmon-colored areas with arborizing and linear vessels can be seen in patients with cutaneous B-cell lymphomas. In patients with advanced multiple myeloma, follicular spicules may be observed. Trichoscopic features of angiosarcomas include pink areas, red polymorphic areas, and dark red to purple areas. Polymorphous vessels and yellowish areas on a pink background are the predominating trichoscopy features of metastases of malignant tumors to the scalp. Cutaneous sarcoidosis is characterized by orange-colored areas and telangiectasias. Systemic amyloidosis may manifest with salmon-colored perifollicular halos, while the most common trichoscopic features of syphilitic alopecia are: a decreased number of hairs per follicular unit, vellus hairs, background erythema, focal atrichia and yellow dots. In conclusion, dermatologists may suspect some systemic diseases on the basis of trichoscopy findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence suggests that decreased dopamine secretion in mesocorticolimbic pathways could predispose to increased susceptibility to substance addiction. It has been proposed to define such a phenomenon as the reward deficit syndrome (RDS). Dopaminergic projections of the reward system receive glutaminergic projections from cortex. Research indicates that a reduction in the stimulating glutamatergic transmission on the dopaminergic system could represent an alternative phenotype of RDS. Potential source of this type of abnormality is glutamate reuptake which depends on excitatory amino acid transport proteins (EAAT) function. The most important of them is EAAT2, polymorphisms of which have been linked to several mental disorders. METHODS We analyzed the genetic and psychometric data of 125 young adults (n = 125) for the effect of the rs4354668 polymorphism of the SLC1A2 gene for EAAT2 on the risky or harmful drug use (RHDU). After exploratory analysis we used logistic regression models to assess the probability of RHDU in individual groups. RESULTS In the final model T/T variant of rs4354668 was significantly associated with a lower probability of RHDU occurrence compared to G/G variant (OR: 0.021; 95% CI: 0.001 - 0.275; p = 0.009). Other significant predictors of RHDU were smoking status and risky or harmful drinking of alcohol. CONCLUSIONS The results obtained may indicate a possible relationship of the risk of harmful drug use with variants of the rs4354668 polymorphism of the SLC1A2 gene for EAAT2. Subjects with the T/T variant of this polymorphism appear to be less at risk of developing drug use disorders.
