Abstract
We report a combined experimental and computational study of several ruthenium(II) sensitizers originated from the [Ru(dcbpyH(2))(2)(NCS)(2)], N3, and [Ru(dcbpyH(2))(tdbpy)(NCS)(2)], N621, (dcbpyH(2) = 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine, tdbpy = 4,4'-tridecyl-2,2'-bipyridine) complexes. A purification procedure was developed to obtain pure N-bonded isomers of both types of sensitizers. The photovoltaic data of the purified N3 and N621 sensitizers adsorbed on TiO(2) films in their monoprotonated and diprotonated state, exhibited remarkable power conversion efficiency at 1 sun, 11.18 and 9.57%, respectively. An extensive Density Functional Theory (DFT)-Time Dependent DFT study of these sensitizers in solution was performed, investigating the effect of protonation of the terminal carboxylic groups and of the counterions on the electronic structure and optical properties of the dyes. The calculated absorption spectra are in good agreement with the experiment, thus allowing a detailed assignment of the UV-vis spectral features of the two types of dyes. The computed alignments of the molecular orbitals of the different complexes with the band edges of a model TiO(2) nanoparticle provide additional insights into the electronic factors governing the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cell devices.

Abstract
Methanol adsorption on clean and hydrated anatase TiO(2)(001)-1 x 1 is studied using density functional theory calculations and first principles molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that (i) dissociative adsorption is favored on clean TiO(2)(001) at both low and high methanol coverages; (ii) on the partially hydrated surface, methanol dissociation is not affected by the coadsorbed water and can still occur very easily; (iii) the dissociative adsorption energy of methanol is always larger than that of water under similar conditions. This implies that water replacement by methanol is energetically favored, in agreement with recent experimental observations on colloidal anatase nanoparticles.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (N-TiO2), a photocatalytic material active in visible light, has been investigated by a combined experimental and theoretical approach. The material contains single-atom nitrogen impurities that form either diamagnetic (Nb-) or paramagnetic (Nb*) bulk centers. Both types of Nb centers give rise to localized states in the band gap of the oxide. The relative abundance of these species depends on the oxidation state of the solid, as, upon reduction, electron transfer from Ti3+ ions to Nb* results in the formation of Ti4+ and Nb-. EPR spectra measured under irradiation show that Nb centers are responsible for visible light absorption with promotion of electrons from the band gap localized states to the conduction band or to surface-adsorbed electron scavengers. These results provide a characterization of the electronic states associated with N impurities in TiO2 and, for the first time, a picture of the processes occurring in the solid under irradiation with visible light.

Abstract
Oxygen (O2) adsorbed on metal oxides is important in catalytic oxidation reactions, chemical sensing, and photocatalysis. Strong adsorption requires transfer of negative charge from oxygen vacancies (VOs) or dopants, for example. With scanning tunneling microscopy, we observed, transformed, and, in conjunction with theory, identified the nature of O2 molecules on the (101) surface of anatase (titanium oxide, TiO2) doped with niobium. VOs reside exclusively in the bulk, but we pull them to the surface with a strongly negatively charged scanning tunneling microscope tip. O2 adsorbed as superoxo (O2–) at fivefold-coordinated Ti sites was transformed to peroxo (O22–) and, via reaction with a VO, placed into an anion surface lattice site as an (O2)O species. This so-called bridging dimer also formed when O2 directly reacted with VOs at or below the surface.

Abstract
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are combined for the first time in an effort to characterize the paramagnetic species present in N-doped anatase TiO2 powders obtained by sol-gel synthesis. The experimental hyperfine coupling constants are well reproduced by two structurally different nitrogen impurities: substitutional and interstitial N atoms in the TiO2 anatase matrix. DFT calculations show that the nitrogen impurities induce the formation of localized states in the band gap. Substitutional nitrogen states lie just above the valence band, while interstitial nitrogen states lie higher in the gap. Excitations from these localized states to the conduction band may account for the absorption edge shift toward lower energies (visible region) observed in the case of N-doped TiO2 with respect to pure TiO2 (UV region). Calculations also show that nitrogen doping leads to a substantial reduction of the energy cost to form oxygen vacancies in bulk TiO2. This suggests that nitrogen doping is likely to be accompanied by oxygen vacancy formation. Finally, we propose that the relative abundance of the two observed nitrogen-doping species depends on the preparation conditions, such as the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere and the annealing temperature during synthesis.

Abstract
We present a combined Density Functional/Time Dependent Density Functional study of the molecular structure, electronic states, and optical absorption spectrum of [Ru(4,4'-COOH-2,2'-bpy)(2)(NCS)(2)], a widely used charge-transfer sensitizer in nanocrystalline TiO(2) solar cells. Calculations have been performed both for the complex in vacuo and in ethanol and water solvents, using a continuum model to account for solute-solvent interactions. Inclusion of the solvent leads to important changes of the energies and composition of the molecular orbitals of the complex; as a consequence, whereas the computed spectrum for the Ru-complex in vacuo deviates from the experimental one in both energy and shape, the spectra calculated in the presence of the solvent are in good agreement with the experiment. The first two absorption bands are found to originate from mixed ruthenium-NCS to bipyridine-pi* transitions rather than to pure metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions, whereas the third band arises from intraligand pi --> pi* transitions. The experimentally observed blue-shift of the spectrum in water with respect to ethanol is well reproduced by our calculations and appears to be related to a decreased dipole moment in the excited state.

Abstract
It has been experimentally observed that a bridging oxygen vacancy on the rutile TiO2(110) surface introduces localized Ti3+ 3d1 states about 1 eV below the conduction band which are not removed upon dissociation of a water molecule and formation of a pair of hydroxyl groups. Density functional calculations based on pure exchange-correlation functionals have not been able to satisfactorily reproduce and analyze these findings. Here we show that a correct description of the localized defect states on reduced and hydroxylated TiO2(110) is achieved only if proper geometry relaxation is accounted for using hybrid exchange functionals. We confirm the electron trapping nature of Ti(OH) groups but find no evidence that these defects should also act as hole traps by formation of Ti4+(OH)* radicals.

Abstract
Surface defects strongly influence the surface chemistry of metal oxides, and a detailed picture of defect structures may help to understand reactivity and overall materials performance in many applications. We report first-principles calculations of step edges, the most common intrinsic defects on surfaces (and probably the predominant ones on nanoparticles). We have determined the structure, energetics, and chemistry of step edges on the (101) surface of TiO(2) anatase, an important photocatalytic material. Scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements of step-edge configurations and the contrast in atomically resolved images agree remarkably well with the theoretical predictions. Step-edge formation energies as well as the adsorption energies of water scale with the surface energy of the step facet, a trend that is expected to generally hold for metal oxide surfaces. Depending on the terrace/step configuration, this can lead to a situation where a step is less reactive than the flat terrace.

Abstract
The adsorption of cysteine on the (111) surface of gold has been studied by means of periodic supercell density-functional theory calculations. A number of different adsorption modes are examined, including adsorption through the thiol group in either thiolate or disulfide form, and adsorption through both the thiol and amino functional groups. We find that at intermediate coverage densities the latter mode of adsorption is favored, followed by thiolate adsorption at the bridge (slightly displace toward fcc) site. The N-Au and S-Au bond strengths in the amino-thiolate adsorption are estimated to be of the order of 6 and 47 kcal/mol, respectively. The electronic structure of the different systems is analyzed, with focus on the total and projected density of states, as well as on the detailed character of the electronic states at the interface. States near the Fermi energy are found to have a metal-molecule antibonding character, whereas metal-molecule bonding states mostly occur near the lower edge of the Au-d band.

Abstract
Excess electrons from intrinsic defects, dopants and photoexcitation play a key role in many of the properties of TiO2. Understanding their behaviour is important for improving the performance of TiO2 in energy-related applications. We focus on anatase, the TiO2 polymorph most relevant in photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. Using first-principles simulations, we investigate the states and dynamics of excess electrons from different donors near the most common anatase (101) and (001) surfaces and aqueous interfaces. We find that the behaviour of excess electrons depends strongly on the exposed anatase surface, the environment and the character of the electron donor. Whereas no electron trapping is observed on the (101) surface in vacuo, an excess electron at the aqueous (101) interface can trigger water dissociation and become trapped into a stable surface Ti(3+)-bridging OH complex. By contrast, electrons avoid the (001) surface, indicating that oxidation reactions are favoured on this surface. Our results provide a bridge between surface science experiments and observations of crystal-face-dependent photocatalysis on anatase, and support the idea that optimization of the ratio between {101} and {001} facets could provide a way to enhance the photocatalytic activity of this material.
