Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to analyze the longitudinal bond strength of a universal adhesive and chemically characterize the dentin substrate under different acid etching protocols. METHODOLOGY Dentin samples were etched with polyacrylic acid 25% (PAA) for 10 seconds (n=3) and phosphoric acid 32% (PA) for 15 seconds (n=3) and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy - attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) before and after treatment. For collagen degradation, samples (n=12) were divided into 3 groups: PAA, PA, and Deionized water (control), and analyzed by the quantity of solubilized type I collagen C-terminal cross-linked telopeptides and solubilized C-terminal peptide in relation to total protein concentration (ICTPtp and CTXtp) and by their ultimate tensile strength (UTS). For the adhesive interface analysis, dentin samples (n=72) were divided into 3 groups: PAA, PA, and Self-etch (SE), and subdivided into 2 groups: 24 h (baseline) and 1 year. The following tests were performed: microtensile bond strength (μTBS) (n=48), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (n=12), and nanoleakage (n=12). RESULTS The FTIR of PAA showed lower reduction of the peaks in the phosphate group when compared to PA. For ICTPtp, PA showed a significantly higher value. For CTXtp, PA and PAA groups failed to statically differ from each other. UTS was significantly lower for PA. For μTBS, storage time significantly affected bond strength. The results were unaffected by the etching protocol. For SEM, after 1 year, PA had little evidence of degradation in the upper third of the adhesive interface in comparison to the other groups. Nanoleakage showed no considerable silver impregnation after 1 year in the SE group. CONCLUSION The use of PAA prior to a universal adhesive (when compared to PA) represents a less aggressive type of etching to dentin. However, self-etching still seems to be the best option for universal adhesive systems that have functional monomers in their composition.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate dentin chemical and ultrastructural changes upon exposure to remineralizing dentifrices. Dentin disks were obtained from permanent human molars and treated for 7 days with the dentifrices: (1) C group-control (no dentifrice); (2) S group-Sensodyne Repair & Protect; (3) D group-Dentalclean Daily Regenerating Gel; and (4) DB group-D group + Dentalclean regenerating booster. Afterwards, samples were submitted to an additional 7 days of toothbrushing associated with daily acidic challenge. Samples were imaged and analyzed (days 1, 7, and 14) for Young's modulus by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). SEM and AFM revealed precipitate deposition on dentin surfaces in groups S, D, and DB, formed as early as day 1. Surface elemental analysis showed a Si increase on all brushed surfaces. Similar surface morphology was maintained after the acidic challenge period. Bright-field TEM/SAED revealed the formation of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite inside the dentin tubules of groups S, D, and DB after day 7. Group C presented a gradual reduction of Young's modulus from days-1-14, whereas all remaining groups had increased values. All evaluated dentifrices led to successful formation of hydroxyapatite and increased dentin stiffness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluated the Odanacatib inhibitor treatment on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) contamination effect on cathepsin-K mediated dentin degradation by analysis of type I collagen C- and N-termini telopeptides. METHODS Pulverized and disks of human dentin were demineralized and LPS contaminated, or stored in deionized water (DW) for 12 h. Samples were challenged with lactic acid (LA). Aliquots of dentin powder were treated with 1 mL Odanacatib or stored in DW for 30 min. Dentin collagen degradation was determined by sub-product release of C-terminal (ICTP and CTX) and N-terminal (NTX) telopeptides, normalized to total protein (tp) concentration (n = 3). Dentin matrix was evaluated for gravimetric (n = 8) and ultrastructural changes. Data were analyzed by Student t-test, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 5 %). RESULTS LA incubation significantly increased telopeptide release compared with DW (p < 0.05). In untreated groups, significantly higher CTXtp, NTXtp telopeptide rates were observed for LA+LPS samples compared with DW (p < 0.01). Odanacatib significantly reduced ICTPtp, CTXtp, and NTXtp telopeptide release for LPS, LA, and LA+LPS conditions. In untreated groups, LPS and LA+LPS challenge significantly increased dentin weight loss (p = 0.02). Within each storage condition, Odanacatib treatment did not affect weight change (p > 0.05) of dentin disks. SIGNIFICANCE This study showed that LPS contamination resulted in significantly higher rates of NTX than CTX from dentin matrix. Odanacatib significantly reduced telopeptide release rates of LPS contaminated dentin matrix.

Abstract
White spot lesions (WSLs) are sites of enamel surface and subsurface demineralization that increases tissue porosity and affects the teeth appearance. The resin infiltration technique proved to be a valid alternative to arrest caries lesion progression and to masking a color change in noncavitated WSLs. Thus, this study aims to report a clinical case of anterior WSLs treated with resin infiltration technique with an 8-year follow-up. The resin infiltration protocol was performed in an 18-year-old female patient presenting WSLs on the maxillary right lateral incisor, left central incisor, and left canine. The protocol followed the manufacturer's recommendations. The patient reported satisfaction with the smile appearance, at the end of the appointment. Infiltrated areas remained unchanged after an 8-year follow-up, showing an acceptable result for the patient's esthetic desires. After 8 years of evaluation, the resin infiltration technique proved to be a resistant and reliable alternative in preventing caries progression and in color masking WSLs.

Resin Composite Versus Amalgam Restorations Placed in United States Dental Schools. Oper Dent 2023; 48:21-32. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the latest teaching policies for posterior resin composite placement versus amalgam and to determine the actual numbers of posterior resin composites versus amalgam restorations placed in American dental schools from 2008 to 2018. METHODS Emails were sent to the deans of all 66 dental schools in the United States to collect data in the forms of: 1) Questionnaire on current teaching policies of posterior composite and amalgam restorations; and 2) Data entry form to collect the actual numbers of posterior composite and amalgam restorations placed in their clinics. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize ratios of posterior restorations. Inferential analysis (chi-square test and z-test) was employed to compare posterior restoration proportions over time and within each year. Level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS For the teaching questionnaire, the response rate was 52% (n=34). Seventy-six per cent of the responding schools reported that they assign 50% or more of their preclinical restorative teaching time towards posterior resin composite placement, while 50% of the responding schools devoted 25% or less towards amalgam teaching. Data entry response rate was 26% (n=17). In 2008, amalgam and resin composite restorations were placed almost equally. However, resin composite restorations were placed significantly more frequently from 2009 onwards in all responding schools. The results revealed a significant ongoing increasing trend in placing posterior resin composites in all responding schools over time (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Data analysis revealed a clear trend towards an increase in posterior resin composite restoration placement and a decrease in the number of amalgam restorations. However, the time assigned for posterior resin composite teaching is not aligned with quantity of restorations placed. Review and adjustment of the time allocated for teaching and training of each material are suggested.

Abstract

METHODS Emails were sent to Chairs/Heads of Restorative Departments and Clinic Directors of all 10 Canadian dental schools to collect data in the forms of: 1) Questionnaire on current teaching policies of posterior composite and amalgam restorations; 2) data entry form to collect the actual numbers of posterior composite and amalgam restorations placed in their clinics. RESULTS For the teaching questionnaire, the response rate was 90% (n=9). Seven (78%) of the responding schools reported that they assign 25%-50% of their preclinical restorative teaching time towards posterior composite placement. While, three (33%) of the responding schools allocated 50%-75% of their restorative teaching towards amalgam placement. Data entry response rate was 80% (n=8). Amalgam material was dominant in the restoration distribution from 2008 to 2012. While from 2013 to 2018, resin composite material was dominant in all eight responding schools. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant increasing trend in placing posterior composites in all the responding schools over time (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Data analysis revealed a clear trend towards an increase of posterior composite restoration placement and a decrease in the number of amalgam restorations placed. However, the teaching time assigned for posterior composite is not aligned with quantity placed. Review and adjustment of time allocated for teaching and training of each material are recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Synthesize novel epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) methacrylate monomers with the ability to copolymerize with dental methacrylate resins. METHODS EGCG was reacted with 1/3 (E33), 2/3 (E67) and 1 (E100) molar equivalents of methacyloyl chloride introducing three degrees of polymerizablility. EGCG-methacrylates were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). E33, E67, E100 and neat EGCG were incorporated into TEGDMA at 0.5-20% ratios (m/m). Copolymers were tested for degree of conversion (%DC), EGCG release, gel content (%GC), degree of swelling (%DS), flexural properties and bacterial viability (Streptococcus mutans, baseline/30-days). Neat TEGDMA and TEGDMA passively loaded with EGCG (E0) were used as controls. Data were analysed by one-way ANOVA, Tukey, and Dunnett's method (α=5%). Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni were used to investigate factor interaction. RESULTS FTIR/NMR confirmed synthesis of desired compounds. All of E100 incorporated ratios had %DC similar to TEGDMA. Remaining groups had reduction in %DC at 2% in E0, 10% in E33 and 20% in E67 ratios. EGCG was stable within ECGC-methacrylate copolymers. Release of EGCG from E0 significantly increased with higher EGCG ratios. Except for E100, higher EGCG or EGCG-methacrylate ratios led to decreased %CG and %DS. At baseline, E0 had the lowest bacterial survival rates (1-10% survival) at all ratios compared to E33, E67, E100, and neat TEGDMA. However, E33, E67 and E100 still had statistically lower survival rates (7-53%) compared with neat TEGDMA. After 30-days, all compounds had similar survival rates for all ratios, which were lower than that of neat TEGDMA. SIGNIFICANCE Demonstration of methacrylate functionalized EGCG- with inherited antibacterial activity for improved restoration longevity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The dentin therapeutic agent chlorhexidine has inflammatory and cytotoxic characteristics urging investigation of alternatives like the natural compound epigallocatechin-gallate. The aim is to verify the effect of epigallocatechin-gallate and chlorhexidine on viability, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and differential protein expression of MDPC-23 odontoblast-like cells stimulated by Streptococcus mutans. DESIGN Cells were stimulated with heat-killed S. mutans at multiplicity of infection (MOI) of 100-1000 and subsequently treated with 100-1 µM of epigallocatechin-gallate. Cells with no treatment or chlorhexidine were controls. Combined stimulated/treated cells were tested for cytotoxicity (Alamar-Blue, N = 3, n = 3), total protein (N = 3, n = 3), IL-1β (ELISA, N = 3, n = 3), and differential protein expression by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS, n = 2). RESULTS Cells stimulated at MOI 100/1000 and treated with 10 µM epigallocatechin-gallate and chlorhexidine did not present cytotoxicity. IL-1β significantly increased in both un-stimulated and stimulated chlorhexidine 10 µM groups when compared to un-treated control (p < 0.05). MOI 100 chlorhexidine 10 µM group significantly increased IL-1β compared to un-stimulated chlorhexidine 10 µM and epigallocatechin-gallate 10 µM groups, as well as to MOI 100 epigallocatechin-gallate 10 µM group (p < 0.05). LC-MS/MS revealed S. mutans and mammalian proteins, with tooth-specific proteins exhibiting different abundance levels, depending on the tested condition. CONCLUSIONS Odontoblast-like cells stimulated with S. mutans at different MOI combined with epigallocatechin-gallate treatment did not cause cytotoxicity. S. mutans stimulation combined with chlorhexidine 100 µM treatment decreased cell viability, while treatment with chlorhexidine 10 µM concentration significantly increased IL-1β. S. mutans stimulation and treatment of cells resulted in varied protein expression.

Abstract
(1) Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the hardness of resin cements polymerized through ceramic disks under different process factors (ceramic type and thickness, light-polymerization units and polymerization time); (2) Method: Three types of ceramic blocks were used (IPS e.max CAD; Celtra Duo; VITABLOCS). Ceramic disks measuring 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm were cut from commercial blocks. Two resin cements (Rely X Veneer and Variolink Esthetic) were polymerized through the ceramic specimens using distinct light-polymerization units (Deep-cure; Blue-phase) and time intervals (10 and 20 s). Hardness of cement specimens was measured using microhardness tester with a Knoop indenter. Data were statistically analyzed using factorial ANOVA (α = 5%); (3) Results: Mean microhardness of Rely X Veneer cement was significantly higher than that of Variolink Esthetic. Deep-cure resulted in higher mean microhardness values compared to Blue-phase at 0.5- and 1-mm specimen thicknesses. Moreover, a direct correlation was found between polymerization time and hardness of resin cement; (4) Conclusions: Surface hardness was affected by resin cement type and ceramic thickness, and not affected by ceramic types, within evaluated conditions. Increasing light-polymerization time significantly increased the hardness of the cement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate obliterating capability and biological performance of desensitizing agents. METHODS 50 dentin blocks were distributed according to the desensitizing agent used (n = 10): Control (Artificial saliva); Ultra EZ (Ultradent); Desensibilize Nano P (FGM); T5-OH Bioactive Glass (Experimental solution); F18 Bioactive Glass (Experimental solution). Desensitizing treatments were performed for 15 days. In addition, specimens were subjected to acid challenge to simulate oral environment demineralizing conditions. Samples were subjected to permeability analysis before and after desensitizing procedures and acid challenge. Cytotoxicity analysis was performed by using Alamar Blue assay and complemented by total protein quantification by Pierce Bicinchoninic Acid assay at 15 min, 24-h and 48-h time points. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy were performed for qualitative analysis. Data of dentin permeability was analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's test. For cytotoxicity, Kruskal-Wallis and Newman-Keuls tests. RESULTS for dentin permeability there was no significant difference among desensitizing agents after treatment, but control group presented highest values (0.131 ± 0.076 Lp). After acid challenge, control group maintained highest values (0.044 ± 0.014 Lp) with significant difference to other groups, except for Desensibilize Nano P (0.037 ± 0.019 Lp). For cytotoxicity, there were no significant differences among groups. CONCLUSION Bioglass-based desensitizers caused similar effects to commercially available products, regarding permeability and dentin biological properties. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE There is no gold standard protocol for dentin sensitivity. The study of novel desensitizing agents that can obliterate dentinal tubules in a faster-acting and long-lasting way may help meet this clinical need.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the penetration depth (μm) of experimental resin infiltrants containing different percentages of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and phosphoric acid 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate ester (PAM) in artificial carious white spot lesions (WSL). METHODS WSL were produced in 65 bovine flat enamel specimens by pH cycling protocol, which were treated with either Icon (control) or experimental acidic infiltrants based on different percentages of TEGDMA and PAM monomers (acidic), and their association or not with previous acid-etching with phosphoric acid. Ten readings using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy were conducted on each specimen and the penetration depth was calculated from the surface until the deepest point with the fluorescent dye Rhodamine B (0.02 mg/mL). The pH and the viscosity of the experimental infiltrants were also tested. Data were statistically analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α < 0.05). RESULTS The material factor and the interaction material*acid-etching were statistically significant. The lowest penetration depth was observed for the samples treated with the commercial infiltrant after etching with 15% hydrochloric acid. When specimens were pre-treated with PA, highest penetration was seen for specimens treated with 100% TEGDMA, which differed from all other groups. The lowest penetration was seen for those treated with 50:50 TEGDMA:PAM infiltrants. When specimens were not previously etched, highest penetration was seen for Icon, which differed only from those treated with 25% TEGDMA 75% PAM, where the lowest values were seen. The values of viscosity increased and the pH decreased with the addition of PAM in the infiltrant formulations. CONCLUSION the association between TEGDMA and PAM seems to allow similar infiltration depth reached by Icon infiltrant without acid etching the enamel surface.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate protease activity of dentin matrices subjected to treatment with non-specific (chlorhexidine - CHX), cysteine cathepsin specific (E-64), and cysteine cathepsin-K (CT-K) specific (Odanacatib - ODN) inhibitors. METHODS Pulverized dentin powder obtained from human dentin disks (0.5 mm thickness) completely demineralized with 10% H3PO4 were challenged in 1 mL lactic acid (LA) (0.1M, pH 5.5) or stored in deionized water for 30 min. Aliquots of dentin powder were then immersed in 1 mL of CHX (2%), E-64 (10 μM and 20 μM) or Odanacatib (0.2 nM and 1 μM) for 30min. Degradation of dentin collagen was determined by telopeptide assays measuring the sub-product release of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptides (ICTP) and C-terminal peptide (CTX) in incubation media, which correlates with matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and CT-K activities respectively (n = 3). The ICTP and CTX data were normalized to concentration of total protein (ICTPtp and CTXtp) in the media, measured by bicinchoninic acid assay. Dentin matrix properties were also measured by gravimetric change (n = 8) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) (n = 10). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc test and independent t-test (α = 5%). RESULTS Telopeptide assays showed significantly lower CTXtp values after treatment with E-64 and Odanacatib. E-64 and Odanacatib at all tested concentrations significantly reduced the release of ICTPtp. Gravimetric analysis showed no significant difference between the tested inhibitors and control except for CHX after lactic acid challenge. UTS results showed significantly higher values for E-64 (20 μM) and Odanacatib (0.2 nM and 1 μM) groups in deionized water. SIGNIFICANCE Dentin therapies targeting enzymes such as CT-K by specific inhibitors may provide superior pharmacokinetics and optimum efficacy due to precise protein binding, consequently limiting collagen degradation directly or indirectly by enzyme related pathways.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the protease activity in dentin matrices subjected to lactic acid (LA) in comparison to polyacrylic acid (PAA) challenge model at cathepsin K (CT-K) optimum pH 5.5 to assess effectiveness of inhibitors in dentin collagen degradation. METHODS Dentin disks measuring 0.5mm prepared from human molars were completely demineralized in 10% H3PO4. Demineralized dentin disks were challenged with 0.1M LA, 1.1mM PAA, artificial saliva (AS), or deionized water (C) for 24h or 7-days. Dentin collagen properties were tested by measurement of %dry mass change, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). Degradation of dentin type I collagen was measured by telopeptide assays measuring the sub-product release of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptides (ICTP) and C-terminal peptide (CTX) in the incubation media in relation to total protein concentration, which correlates with matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and CT-K activities. RESULTS Gravimetric analysis showed statistically significant difference between C and other groups (p<0.04) at 24h. LA specimens showed significantly higher weight loss from 24h to 7-days (p=0.02). UTS revealed statistically significant difference between AS and LA at 24h and 7-days. UTS at 24h and 7-days for C and AS had significantly higher mean values compared to LA and PAA. Telopeptide assays reported that CTXtp results showed that LA at 24h had significantly higher mean values compared to C and AS. SIGNIFICANCE LA has the ability to activate endogenous CT-K in dentin as measured by the release of CTX (CT-K specific telopeptide). This LA based model has the potential application for further investigations on the activity and possible inhibitors of CT-K in human dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the influence of the addition of fillers and/or protease inhibitors [(epigallocatechin gallate - EGCG) or (chlorhexidine - CHX)] in experimental resins in the protein profile of the acquired pellicle (AP) formed in situ on enamel-resin specimens. DESIGN 324 samples of bovine enamel were prepared (6 × 6 × 2 mm). The center of each sample was added with one of the following experimental resins (Bis-GMA+TEGDMA): no filler, no inhibitor (NF-NI); filler no inhibitor (F-NI); no filler plus CHX (NF-CHX); filler plus CHX (F-CHX); no filler plus EGCG (NF-EGCG); filler plus EGCG (F-EGCG). Nine subjects used a removable jaw appliance (BISPM - Bauru in situ pellicle model) with 2 slabs from each group. The AP was formed for 120 min, in 9 days and collected with electrode filter paper soaked in 3% citric acid. The pellicles collected were processed for analysis by LC-ESI-MS/MS. RESULTS A total of 140 proteins were found in the AP collected from all the substrates. Among them, 16 proteins were found in common in all the groups: 2 isoforms of Basic salivary proline-rich protein, Cystatin-S, Cystatin-AS, Cystatin-SN, Histatin-1, Ig alpha-1 chain C region, Lysozyme C, Mucin-7, Proline-rich protein 4, Protein S100-A9, Salivary acidic proline-rich phosphoprotein ½ and Statherin. Proteins with other functions, such as metabolism and transport, were also identified. CONCLUSION The composition of the experimental resins influenced the protein profile of the AP. This opens a new avenue for the development of new materials able to guide for AP engineering, thus conferring protection to the adjacent teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets bonded to uncut enamel with universal self-etch 1-step adhesive systems. METHODS Extracted uncut premolars (n = 160) were randomly divided into 4 groups for treatment with Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SU), All-Bond Universal (BU), Clearfil Universal Bond (CU) or the control, Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Adhesive. Following bonding of brackets on tooth surfaces, teeth were stored in distilled water for 24 h and 6 months, and brackets were tested for SBS. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) and quantitative percentage of remaining resin (%RR) were recorded. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze debonded surfaces qualitatively. SBS and %RR data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey test (α = 0.05). RESULTS At neither time did these universal adhesives achieve satisfactory SBS for orthodontic treatment. The control group had the highest SBS, ARI score and mean %RR (and these differences were significant), while the BU group had the lowest SBS. SBS mean values and ARI scores decreased over time for SU and BU, but remained stable for CU. There was no difference in %RR among the universal adhesives tested. CONCLUSION None of the universal adhesives used in self-etch mode achieved SBS values (at 24 h and 6 months) that were satisfactory for orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) has been implicated in periodontal tissue inflammation and possibly in osteoclast differentiation, while polyphenols are known to be anti-inflammatory natural compounds that are capable of regulating the NF-κB protein complex pathway. The objective of this study was to investigate cytotoxicity and HIF-1α expression through the NF-κB pathway by polyphenol velutin (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), found in the pulp of acai fruit, during inflammatory RAW 264.7 differentiation. DESIGN RAW 264.7 mouse monocyte macrophage cells were stimulated with RANKL (30ng/mL) and Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (1μg/mL). Cells were treated with various concentrations of velutin (0.5-2μM) to check for viability, morphology, osteoclast differentiation, and HIF-1α expression (Western blot). RESULTS Alamar blue cell viability assay showed no toxicity to RAW cells with the use of velutin in all concentrations tested (p>0.05). Velutin did not induce cell apoptosis based on caspase 3/7 assay (p>0.05). Fluorescence images stained by DAPI showed no alteration in the morphology of RAW cell nuclei (p>0.05) treated with velutin. TRAP assays demonstrated a dose-dependent reduction in osteoclast formation by velutin when compared with control (p<0.05). Velutin showed a reduction in HIF-1α expression related to IκB phosphorylation when compared with control (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS At the tested concentrations, velutin was not cytotoxic to RAW 264.7 and differentiated cells. Velutin reduced osteoclast differentiation and downregulated HIF-1α through the NF-κB pathway.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the effect of different concentrations and application times of proanthocyanidin gels on dentin before an erosive challenge in order to evaluate if there is a dose-response or application time-response relationship in the use of these gels for erosion prevention. METHODS 80 bovine root dentin blocks were randomly and equally divided into 10 groups and treated according to the two factors under study (purified grape seed proanthocyanidin gel concentration and time of application): 0.05P1: 0.05% proanthocyanidin gel during 1 minute; 0.05P5: 0.05% proanthocyanidin gel during 5 minutes; 1P1: 1% proanthocyanidin gel during 1 minute; 1P5: 1% proanthocyanidin gel during 5 minutes; 5P1: 5% proanthocyanidin gel during 1 minute; 5P5: 5% proantho-cyanidin gel during 5 minutes; 10P1: 10% proanthocyanidin gel during 1 minute; 10P5: 10% proanthocyanidin gel during 5 minutes; Control 1: placebo gel during 1 minute; and Control 5: placebo gel during 5 minutes. The gels were applied over dentin blocks once before the first erosive challenge. After that, the blocks were subjected to three erosive cycles per day, during 5 days. Profilometry was used to quantify the dentin loss (µm). Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Fisher's test (P< 0.05). RESULTS Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the application times. The different concentrations of proanthocianidin gels presented similar results (P> 0.05). All tested gels resulted in significantly less wear when compared to the placebo gel. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Grape seed proanthocyanidin gels could be considered as a promising therapy to diminish erosive dentin wear because it may interact with the exposed collagen, enhancing the demineralized organic matrix stabilization, which acts as a barrier against the diffusion of the acids from erosion.

Abstract
Abstract The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the temperature variation inside the pulp chamber during light-activation of the adhesive and resin composite layers with different light sources. Cavities measuring 8x10 mm were prepared on the buccal surface of bovine incisors, leaving a remaining dentin thickness of 1 mm. Specimens were placed in a 37±1 °C water bath to standardize the temperature. The temperature in the pulp chamber was measured every 10 s during 40 s of light activation of the adhesive system (SBMP-3M/ESPE) and in the three consecutive 1-mm-thick layers of resin composite (Z250-3M/ESPE). Three light source devices were evaluated: Elipar 2500 (QTH), LD Max (LED low irradiance) and VALO (LED high irradiance). The results were submitted to one-way ANOVA with repeated measures and Tukey's test, both with p<0.001. The exothermic reaction warming was observed in the Z250 increments, but not in the SBMP. The high irradiance LED showed a higher temperature average (42.7±1.56 °C), followed by the quartz-tungsten-halogen light (40.6±0.67 °C) and the lower irradiance LED (37.8±0.12 °C). Higher temperature increases were observed with the adhesive and the first resin composite increment light-activation, regardless of the employed light source. From the second increment of Z250, the restorative material acted as a dispersive structure of heat, reducing temperature increases. Regardless the light source and restorative step, the temperature increased with the irradiation time. It may be concluded that the light source, irradiation time and resin composite thickness interfered in the temperature variation inside the pulp chamber.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate cytotoxicity and effect on protease activity of epigallocatechin-gallate extracted from experimental restorative dental copolymers in comparison to the control compound chlorhexidine. METHODS Copolymer disks were prepared from bis-GMA/TEGDMA (70/30 mol%) containing no compound (control) or 1% w/w of either epigallocatechin-gallate or chlorhexidine. MDPC-23 odontoblast-like cells were seeded with the copolymer extracts leached out into deionized water. Cell metabolic activity was quantified by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay at 24, 48, 72 h. Inhibition of protease activity by resin extracts was measured by a collagenolytic/genatinolytic enzyme activity assay and gelatin zymography. Data for MTT and protease inhibition were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey or Bonferroni post hoc tests (α=0.05). RESULTS The MTT revealed that at 72 h, extracts from control (16.7%) and chlorhexidine (22.3%) copolymers induced significant reduction in cell metabolism (p<0.05). All copolymer extracts caused enzymatic inhibition in a dose dependent manner (p<0.01). Even when highly diluted, epigallocatechin-gallate extract had a significant antiproteolytic activity (p<0.05). Zymograms showed that all extracts reduced activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 (pro- and active forms), with MMP-9 exhibiting the highest percentage inhibition revealed by densitometry. CONCLUSIONS Epigallocatechin-gallate and chlorhexidine extracts did not exert cytotoxicity on evaluated cells when compared to control extracts. Both compounds retained antiproteolytic activity after extraction from a dental copolymer. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Once extracted from a dental copolymer, epigallocatechin-gallate is not cytotoxic and retains antiproteolytic activity. These results may allow incorporation of epigallocatechin-gallate as a natural-safe alternative to chlorhexidine in functionalized restorative materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work measured the amount of bound versus unbound water in completely-demineralized dentin. METHODS Dentin beams prepared from extracted human teeth were completely demineralized, rinsed and dried to constant mass. They were rehydrated in 41% relative humidity (RH), while gravimetrically measuring their mass increase until the first plateau was reached at 0.064 (vacuum) or 0.116 gH2O/g dry mass (Drierite). The specimens were then exposed to 60% RH until attaining the second plateau at 0.220 (vacuum) or 0.191 gH2O/g dry mass (Drierite), and subsequently exposed to 99% RH until attaining the third plateau at 0.493 (vacuum) or 0.401 gH2O/g dry mass (Drierite). RESULTS Exposure of the first layer of bound water to 0% RH for 5 min produced a -0.3% loss of bound water; in the second layer of bound water it caused a -3.3% loss of bound water; in the third layer it caused a -6% loss of bound water. Immersion in 100% ethanol or acetone for 5 min produced a 2.8 and 1.9% loss of bound water from the first layer, respectively; it caused a -4 and -7% loss of bound water in the second layer, respectively; and a -17 and -23% loss of bound water in the third layer. Bound water represented 21-25% of total dentin water. Chemical dehydration of water-saturated dentin with ethanol/acetone for 1 min only removed between 25 and 35% of unbound water, respectively. SIGNIFICANCE Attempts to remove bound water by evaporation were not very successful. Chemical dehydration with 100% acetone was more successful than 100% ethanol especially the third layer of bound water. Since unbound water represents between 75 and 79% of total matrix water, the more such water can be removed, the more resin can be infiltrated.

Abstract
Allium cepa L. is known to possess numerous pharmacological properties. Our aim was to examine the in vitro effects of Allium cepa L. extract (AcE) on Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS and Escherichia coli LPS-stimulated osteoclast precursor cells to determine cell viability to other future cell-based assays. Osteoclast precursor cells (RAW 264.7) were stimulated by Pg LPS (1 μg/mL) and E. coli LPS (1 μg/mL) in the presence or absence of different concentrations of AcE (10-1000 μg/mL) for 5 days at 37°C/5% CO2. Resazurin reduction and total protein content assays were used to detect cell viability. AcE did not affect cell viability. Resazurin reduction assay showed that AcE, at up to 1000 μg/mL, did not significantly affect cell viability and cellular protein levels. Additionally a caspase 3/7 luminescence assay was used to disclose apoptosis and there was no difference in apoptotic activity between tested groups and control group. Fluorescence images stained by DAPI showed no alteration on the morphology and cell counts of LPS-stimulated osteoclast precursor cells with the use of AcE in all tested concentrations when compared to control. These findings suggest that Allium cepa L. extract could be used for in vitro studies on Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS and Escherichia coli LPS-stimulated osteoclast precursor cells.

Abstract
Objective: To test the inhibitory growth activity of green tea catechin incorporated into dental resins compared to resins containing the broad-spectrum antimicrobial compound chlorhexidine against Streptococcus mutans in vitro. Material and Methods: The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCg) and chlorhexidine (CHX) were determined according to the microdilution method. Resin discs (5 mm x 3 mm) were prepared from Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (R1) and Bis-GMA/CH3Bis-GMA (R2) comonomers (n=9) containing: a) no drug, b) EGCg, c) CHX. Two concentrations of each drug (0.5x MIC and 1x MIC) were incorporated into the resin discs. Samples were individually immersed in a bacterial culture and incubated for 24 h at 37º C under constant agitation. Cell viability was assessed by counting the number of colonies on replica agar plates. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey and Student t-tests (α=0.05). Results: Both resins containing EGCg and CHX showed a significant inhibition of bacterial growth at both concentrations tested (p<0.05). A significantly higher inhibition was observed in response to resins containing CHX at 0.5x MIC and 1x MIC, and EGCg at 1x MIC when compared to EGCg at 0.5x MIC. Also, EGCg at 0.5x MIC in R1 had a significantly higher growth inhibition than in R2. Conclusions: Both EGCg and CHX retained their antibacterial activity when incorporated into the resin matrix. EGCg at 1x MIC in R1 and R2 resins significantly reduced S. mutans survival at a level similar to CHX. The data generated from this study will provide advances in the field of bioactive dental materials with the potential of improving the lifespan of resin-based restorations.

Abstract
AIM This study investigated the effect of different fiber inserts (glass and polyethylene), bonding agents, and resin composites on the gingival margin microleakage of class V composite restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty premolars were sterilized and mounted in acrylic resin bases. Class V cavities were prepared buccally and lingually, 1 mm below the cementoenamel junction, comprising 12 groups (n = 10). In the experimental groups fiber inserts were cut and placed at the gingival seat, while the control groups had no inserts. Combinations of two composite materials, Filtek-Z250 and Filtek-LS (3M-ESPE), and four bonding agents, Clearfil SE bond (Kuraray) (C), Scotch Bond Multipurpose (3M-ESPE) (SB), Prime and Bond NT (Dentsply) (PB), and Filtek-LS (3M-ESPE) (LS) were used. Restorations were incrementally inserted and polymerized for 40s. Specimens were then stored in distilled water for 7 days and thermocycled for 500 cycles. Teeth surfaces were sealed with nail polish except for 1 mm around restoration margins and immersed in 2% red procion dye. Teeth were then sectioned buccolingually and dye penetration was assessed with five-point scale. Data were statistically-analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, ANOVA and Tukey's tests (α = 5%). RESULTS Mean microleakage scores varied from 0.40 (Groups C, C with polyethylene, LS, LS with polyethylene) to 1.50 (SB). CONCLUSION Different bonding agents led to differences in microleakage scores where C and LS showed significantly lower microleakage than PB. SB had highest mean microleakage score, however, incorporation of fibers resulted in significant reduction in microleakage. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Class V resin composite restorations bonded with a total-etch adhesive had a significant reduction in mean microleakage scores when glass or polyethylene fibers were placed at the gingival cavo-surface margin. In contrast, for two self-etch adhesive systems, the incorporation of fibers had no significant effect on mean microleakage scores.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Nd:YAG laser on the shear bond strength to enamel and dentin of total and self-etch adhesives when the laser was applied over the adhesives, before they were photopolymerized, in an attempt to create a new bonding layer by dentin-adhesive melting. MATERIAL AND METHODS One-hundred twenty bovine incisors were ground to obtain flat surfaces. Specimens were divided into two substrate groups (n=60): substrate E (enamel) and substrate D (dentin). Each substrate group was subdivided into four groups (n=15), according to the surface treatment accomplished: X (Xeno III self-etching adhesive, control), XL (Xeno III + laser Nd:YAG irradiation at 140 mJ/10 Hz for 60 seconds + photopolymerization, experimental), S (acid etching + Single Bond conventional adhesive, Control), and SL (acid etching + Single Bond + laser Nd:YAG at 140 mJ/10 Hz for 60 seconds + photopolymerization, experimental). The bonding area was delimited with 3-mm-diameter adhesive tape for the bonding procedures. Cylinders of composite were fabricated on the bonding area using a Teflon matrix. The teeth were stored in water at 37°C/48 h and submitted to shear testing at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min in a universal testing machine. Results were analyzed with three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA; substrate, adhesive, and treatment) and Tukey tests (α=0.05). ANOVA revealed significant differences for the substrate, adhesive system, and type of treatment: lased or unlased (p<0.05). The mean shear bond strength values (MPa) for the enamel groups were X=20.2 ± 5.61, XL=23.6 ± 4.92, S=20.8 ± 4.55, SL=22.1 ± 5.14 and for the dentin groups were X=14.1 ± 7.51, XL=22.2 ± 6.45, S=11.2 ± 5.77, SL=15.9 ± 3.61. For dentin, Xeno III self-etch adhesive showed significantly higher shear bond strength compared with Single Bond total-etch adhesive; Nd:YAG laser irradiation showed significantly higher shear bond strength compared with control (unlased). CONCLUSION Nd:YAG laser application prior to photopolymerization of adhesive systems significantly increased the bond strength to dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of additives on the water sorption characteristics of Bis-GMA based copolymers and composites containing TEGDMA, CH3Bis-GMA or CF3Bis-GMA. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifteen experimental copolymers and corresponding composites were prepared combining Bis-GMA and TEGDMA, CH3Bis-GMA or CF3Bis-GMA, with aldehyde or diketone (24 and 32 mol%) totaling 30 groups. For composites, barium aluminosilicate glass and pyrogenic silica was added to comonomer mixtures. Photopolymerization was effected by 0.2 wt% each of camphorquinone and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Specimen densities in dry and water saturated conditions were obtained by Archimedes' method. Water sorption and desorption were evaluated in a desorption-sorption-desorption cycle. Water uptake (%WU), water desorption (%WD), equilibrium solubility (ES; µg/mm³), swelling (f) and volume increase (%V) were calculated using appropriate equations. RESULTS All resins with additives had increased %WU and ES. TEGDMA-containing systems presented higher %WU, %WD, ES, f and %V values, followed by resins based on CH3Bis-GMA and CF3Bis-GMA. CONCLUSIONS Aldehyde and diketone led to increases in the water sorption characteristics of experimental resins.

Abstract
Caries is a multifactorial and transmittable disease that results mainly from bacteria present in the oral cavity. Oral microorganisms can produce metabolic acids that diffuse through dental tissues and interfaces leading to dissolution of mineral. In dentine, after mineral is dissolved, organic matrix is also exposed to breakdown by host enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that are activated by low pH followed by neutralization. Abstract
The objective of this laboratory study was to evaluate the volumetric contraction of five resin composites currently in use. A helium gas pycnometer was used to determine the volume of specimens prior to and after photopolymerization from which total volumetric contraction was obtained. The resin was weighed in an analytic balance and inserted into the pycnometer chamber, the volume of which is known, and hermetically sealed. The volume of the specimen was determined by measuring the pressure change of helium when it was opened up to the expansion chamber. In this study, 15 cycles of pressurizing were repeated for volume determination for each specimen. The arithmetic mean volume was obtained. The final volume was evaluated as done before. The percentage contraction (P) was calculated by: P = 100(SVi - SVf) / SVi, where SV is specific volume and the suffixes i and f indicate measurements before and after polymerization, respectively. The measured volumetric shrinkage ranged from 0.56% for Z250 (3M-ESPE) to 3.26% for P60 (3M-ESPE). The gas pycnometry is a promising method and its mechanism should be more explored for investigating dental materials.

Entretanto, como todo o material restaurador, este também apresenta alguns inconvenientes. O crucial controle da umidade no ato da cimentação, a realização de uma fotopolimerização adequada e problemas relacionados à contração de polimerização, são alguns deles. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar e analisar os cimentos resinosos dual.

Abstract
O presente estudo objetivou avaliar a microinfiltração margina de restaurações classe II de duas resinas compostas condensáveis comparando-as com as de uma resina composta universal, utilizando-se uma resina tipo flow como forramento. Quinze molares humanos hígidos e congelados após extração foram selecionados para este estudo. Confeccionaram-se cavidades classe II MOD, sendo um dos términos proximais em esmalte e o outro em cemento e dividiram-se os espécimes em três grupos: Grupo A foi restaurado com a resina condensável ALERT (Jeneric/Pentron); Grupo S foi restaurado com a resina condensável Solitaire (Heraeus-Kulzer) e Grupo Z foi restaurado com a resina composta universal Z100 (3M Co.). Como primeira camada (ou forramento), para todos os grupos, fora utilizado a resina de baixa viscosidade Flow it!(Jeneric/Pentron). As restaurações receberam acabamento e os dentes foram então imersos em água destilada a 37ºC por sete dias, precedendo a termociclagem (300 ciclos). Finalmente, os dentes foram mergulhados em solução de nitrato de prata a 50% (duas horas) e seccionados para avaliação da microinfiltração por três examinadores calibrados, atribuindo-se os escores: (0) não houve penetração do contraste; (1) penetração na parede gengival; (2) penetração na parede axial; (3) difusão para ou penetração na câmara pulpar. RESULTADOS: As médias escore dos examinadores para os compósitos testados foram: Grupo A: esmalte= 1,20, cemento= 2,06, Grupo S: esmalte= 2,86, cemento= 2,93, Grupo Z: esmalte= 1,80, cemento= 2,40. Submeteu- se aos valores o teste estatístico de Kruskal-Wallis, revelando a não significância estatística entre os grupos para p<0,05. CONCLUSÃO: Nenhum dos compósitos testados foi capaz de impedir a microinfiltração tanto em margens de esmalte como nas de cemento. O grupo A em esmalte apresentou a menor média escore para microinfiltração.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of two surface sealants (BisCover/Single Bond) and three application techniques (unsealed/conventional/co-polymerization) on the roughness of two composites (Filtek Z250/Z350) after the toothbrushing test. METHODS Seventy-two rectangular specimens (5 mm x10 mm x 3 mm) were fabricated and assigned into 12 groups (n=6). Each sample was subjected to three random roughness readings at baseline, after 100,000 (intermediate), and 200,000 (final) toothbrushing strokes. Roughness (R) at each stage was obtained by the arithmetic mean of the reading of each specimen. Sealant removal was qualitatively examined (optical microscope) and classified into scores (0-3). Data were analyzed by Student's paired t-test, two-way ANOVA/Tukey's test, and by Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis and Miller's test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS Z250 groups at baseline did not differ statistically from each other. Unsealed Z350 at baseline had lower R values. All the unsealed groups presented gradual decrease in R from baseline to final brushing. From baseline to the intermediate stage, Z250 co-polymerized groups presented a significant reduction in R (score 3). Conventionally sealed groups had no significant changes in R (scores 2-0.8). From baseline to the intermediate stage, the conventionally sealed Z350 Single Bond group had an increase in R (score 1.5). In the final stage, all the conventionally sealed groups presented a reduction in R (scores 0.7-0). Co-polymerized Single Bond groups had a significant reduction in R (scores 2.5-2.7), and co-polymerized BisCover groups an increase in R (scores 2.8-3). CONCLUSIONS At any brushing stage, sealed composites presented superior performance when compared with unsealed composites.

Abstract
This case report describes the Indirect Pulp Treatment (IPT) of deep caries lesion in a permanent molar. A 16-year-old male patient reported discomfort associated with thermal stimulation on the permanent mandibular left first molar. The radiographs revealed a deep distal caries lesion, very close to the pulp, absence of radiolucencies in the periapical region, and absence of periodontal space thickening. Pulp sensitivity was confirmed by thermal pulp vitality tests. Based on the main complaint and the clinical and radiographic examinations, the treatment plan was established to preserve pulp vitality. Clinical procedures consisted of removing the infected dentin and lining the caries-affected dentin with calcium hydroxide paste. The tooth was provisionally sealed for approximately 60 days. After this period, tooth vitality was confirmed, the remaining carious dentin was removed, and the tooth was restored. At 4-year follow-up, no clinical or radiographic pathological findings were found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study tested the following null hypotheses: (1) there is no difference in resin-dentine bond strength when an experimental glutaraldehyde primer solution is added prior to bonding procedures and (2) there is no difference in resin-dentine bond strength when experimental glutaraldehyde/adhesive system is applied under dry or wet demineralized dentine conditions. METHODS Extracted human maxillary third molars were selected. Flat, mid-coronal dentine was exposed for bonding and four groups were formed. Two groups were designated for the dry and two for the wet dentine technique: DRY: (1) Group GD: acid etching+glutaraldehyde primer (primer A)+HEMA/ethanol primer (primer B)-under dried dentine+unfilled resin; (2) Group D: the same as GD, except for primer A application; WET: (3) Group GW: the same as GD, but primer B was applied under wet dentine condition; (4) Group W: the same as GW, except for primer A application. The bonding resin was light-cured and a resin core was built up on the adhesive layer. Teeth were then prepared for microtensile bond testing to evaluate bond strength. The data obtained were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS Glutaraldehyde primer application significantly improved resin-dentine bond strength. No significant difference was observed when the same experimental adhesive system was applied under either dry or wet dentine conditions. These results allow the first null hypothesis to be rejected and the second to be accepted. CONCLUSION Glutaraldehyde may affect demineralized dentine properties leading to improved resin bonding to wet and dry substrates.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the 6-year performance of the ART (atraumatic restorative treatment) approach in Class III restorations in permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 127 ART Class III restorations, using Ketac-Molar (3M ESPE) ionomer cement, was performed in 58 adult patients by one experienced operator in 1998. After a 6 years, 34 patients and 65 restorations were evaluated according to ART criteria. Two calibrated examiners carried out the evaluation. Data were analyzed by exact 95% Confidence Interval and Survival Analysis using the Jackknife method for standard error determination. RESULTS Among assessed restorations, 73.8% (95% CI = 61.5% to 86.2%) were in good condition and classified as successful, with a 67.6% (95% CI = 54.4% to 80.7%) cumulative survival rate. Failed restorations included 13.9% completely or partially missing restorations, 9.2% restorations that had been replaced by other treatment, 1.5% restorations with a large defect at the margin, and 1.5% restorations that presented high wear on the surface. No caries was observed even in those teeth in which restorations were absent. CONCLUSION The 6-year success rate of the ART approach in anterior permanent teeth (Class III) was considered high.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of two additives, aldehyde or diketone, on the wear, roughness and hardness of bis-GMA-based composites/copolymers containing TEGDMA, propoxylated bis-GMA (CH(3)bis-GMA) or propoxylated fluorinated bis-GMA (CF(3)bis-GMA). METHODS Fifteen experimental composites and 15 corresponding copolymers were prepared combining bis-GMA and TEGDMA, CH(3)bis-GMA or CF(3)bis-GMA, with aldehyde (24 mol% and 32 mol%) or diketone (24 mol% and 32 mol%) totaling 30 groups. For composites, hybrid treated filler (barium aluminosilicate glass/pyrogenic silica; 60 wt%) was added to monomer mixtures. Photopolymerization was affected by 0.2 wt% each of camphorquinone and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Wear (W) test was conducted in a toothbrushing abrasion machine (n=6) and quantified using a profilometer. Surface roughness (R) changes, before and after abrasion test, were determined using a rugosimeter. Microhardness (H) measurements were performed for dry and wet samples using a Knoop microindenter (n=6). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS Incorporation of additives led to improved W and H values for bis-GMA/TEGDMA and bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA systems. Additives had no significant effect on the W and H changes of bis-GMA/CF(3)bis-GMA. With regard to R changes, additives produced decreased values for bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA and bis-GMA/CF(3)bis-GMA composites. Bis-GMA/TEGDMA and bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA copolymers with additives became smoother after abrasion test. SIGNIFICANCE The findings correlate with additives ability to improve degree of conversion of some composites/copolymers thereby enhancing mechanical properties.

Effect of toothbrushing abrasion on weight and surface roughness of pH-cycled resin cements and indirect restorative materials. QUINTESSENCE INTERNATIONAL (BERLIN, GERMANY : 1985) 2007; 38:e544-54. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate wear resistance, by weight loss and roughness changes, of resin cements and indirect restorative materials to toothbrushing and toothbrushing associated with pH-challenge simulation. METHOD AND MATERIALS The following materials were studied: Enforce resin cement (Dentsply), Rely X resin cement (3M ESPE), Variolink II resin cement (Ivoclar/Vivadent), Artglass indirect resin composite (Heraeus Kulzer), and Duceram Plus porcelain (Degussa). Twenty cylindrical specimens were prepared for each material for a total of 10 groups (n = 10). After finishing and polishing, the specimens were subjected to toothbrushing. One group of each material was pH cycled before abrasion. For toothbrushing, a machine containing soft-bristle tips, dentifrice, and water was used. One hundred thousand brushing cycles were performed. Weight loss was determined as the percentage difference between initial (before brushing) and final (after brushing) measurements. Roughness changes were evaluated by the difference between initial and final measurements. Data were analyzed with the paired t test, 2-way ANOVA, and Tukey test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS Paired t test showed significant differences in weight loss and roughness after toothbrushing (P <.01). Statistically significant differences were found among materials for both weight loss, which ranged from 0.34% (Duceram Plus) to 1.85% (Enforce/pH), and roughness changes, which ranged from -0.03 microm (Duceram Plus) to 0.29 microm (Rely X/pH). CONCLUSIONS Among cements, Variolink II exhibited the least weight loss and roughness increase. Of all materials, Duceram Plus porcelain presented the lowest weight loss and became smoother after abrasion. pH cycling had no influence on material weight or roughness changes after abrasion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two additives: propionaldehyde (aldehyde) and 2,3-butanedione (diketone) on the properties of Bis-GMA diluted with TEGDMA and the synthesized Bis-GMA analogs, propoxylated Bis-GMA (CH(3)Bis-GMA) and propoxylated fluorinated Bis-GMA (CF(3)Bis-GMA). METHODS Nine experimental comonomers were prepared combining Bis-GMA and TEGDMA, CH(3)Bis-GMA, CF(3)Bis-GMA, with aldehyde (32mol%) and diketone (32mol%). Photopolymerization was effected by using Camphorquinone (0.2wt%) and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine (0.2wt%). Experimental comonomer viscosity (Brookfield viscometer), polymerization shrinkage (gravimetrically), degree of conversion (FT-IR) and contact angles (contact angle goniometer) were determined. Comonomer and copolymer T(g)s (DSC and Fox equation) were also evaluated. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS Bis-GMA/CH(3)Bis-GMA and Bis-GMA/CF(3)Bis-GMA with additives exhibited lower viscosities (p<0.01). Inclusion of additives into the comonomer systems did not produce significant increase in polymerization shrinkage (p>0.05). A significant increase in degree of conversion was shown for Bis-GMA/TEGDMA and Bis-GMA/CH(3)Bis-GMA with additives (p<0.01). Additives reduced contact angle and comonomer T(g) values, whereas the corresponding copolymers with additives showed an increase in T(g). SIGNIFICANCE Use of novel comonomer systems with the addition of aldehyde and diketone functional groups would improve dental resin composite properties.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of ceramic plates cemented to dentin as a function of the resin cement film thickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ceramic plates (1 and 2 mm thicknesses) were cemented to bovine dentin using resin composite cement. The film thicknesses used were approximately 100, 200, and 300 microm. Noncemented ceramic plates were used as control. Fracture loads (N) were obtained by compressing a steel indenter in the center of the ceramic plates. ANOVA and Tukey tests (alpha= 0.05) were used for each ceramic thickness to compare fracture loads among resin cement films used. RESULTS Mean fracture load (N) for 1-mm ceramic plates were: control-26 (7); 100 microm-743 (150); 200 microm-865 (105); 300 microm-982 (226). Test groups were significantly different from the control group; there was a statistical difference in fracture load between groups with 100 and 300 microm film thicknesses ( p < 0.01). Mean fracture load for 2-mm ceramic plates were: control-214 (111); 100 microm-1096 (341); 200 microm-1067 (226); 300 microm-1351 (269). Tested groups were also significantly different from the control group ( p < 0.01). No statistical difference was shown among different film thicknesses. CONCLUSIONS Unluted specimens presented significantly lower fracture resistance than luted specimens. Higher cement film thickness resulted in increased fracture resistance for the 1-mm ceramic plates. Film thickness did not influence the fracture resistance of 2-mm porcelain plates.
