Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in children is frequently associated with growth interruption. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of OSAS and adenotonsillectomy on the insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) axis in children. STUDY DESIGN Thirteen prepubertal children (mean age, 6.0 +/- 2.8 years) were studied before and after adenotonsillectomy (T&A). Weight, height, overnight polysomnography, and IGF-I and IGF-binding protein-3 levels were evaluated before and 3 to 12 months after T&A. The children's weights and heights were monitored for 18 months. RESULTS The respiratory disturbance index improved from 7.8 +/- 9.1 events/h to 1.0 +/- 2.1 events/h after T&A (P <.02). Slow-wave sleep increased from 29.1% +/- 7.2% to 34.6% +/- 9.8% after T&A (P <.02). The weight standard deviation score increased from 0.86 +/- 1 to 1. 24 +/- 0.9, 18 months after T&A (P <.01). Serum IGF-I levels increased from 146.3 +/- 76.2 ng/mL before T&A to 210.3 +/- 112.5 ng/mL after surgery (P <.01), but IGF-binding protein-3 levels did not change significantly. CONCLUSION The respiratory improvement after T&A in children with OSAS is associated with a significant increase in serum IGF-I levels and weight. We conclude that the IGF-I axis is affected in children with OSAS.

Abstract
Innovative synthetic coordination and, increasingly, organometallic chemistry are at the heart of advances in molecular magnetism. Smart ligand design is essential for implementing controlled modifications to the electronic structure and magnetic properties of transition metal and f-element compounds, and many important recent developments use nontraditional ligands based on low-coordinate main group elements to drive the field forward. This review charts progress in molecular magnetism from the perspective of ligands in which the donor atoms range from low-coordinate 2p elements-particularly carbon but also boron and nitrogen-to the heavier p-block elements such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and even bismuth. Emphasis is placed on the role played by novel main group ligands in addressing magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and f-element compounds, which underpins the development of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), a family of magnetic materials that can retain magnetization in the absence of a magnetic field below a blocking temperature. Nontraditional p-block donor atoms, with their relatively diffuse valence orbitals and more diverse bonding characteristics, also introduce scope for tuning the spin-orbit coupling properties and metal-ligand covalency in molecular magnets, which has implications in areas such as magnetic exchange coupling and spin crossover phenomena. The chemistry encompasses transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides and describes recently discovered molecular magnets that can be regarded, currently, as defining the state of the art. This review identifies that main group chemistry at the interface molecular magnetism is an area with huge potential to deliver new types of molecular magnets with previously unseen properties and applications.

Abstract
Supramolecular organization of a metal complex may significantly contribute to the magnetization dynamics of mononuclear SMMs. This is illustrated for a heptacoordinated Fe(II) complex with rather moderate Ising-type anisotropy for which a slow magnetization relaxation with significant energy barrier was reached when this complex was properly organized in the crystal lattice. Incidentally, it is the first example of single-ion magnet behaviour of Fe(II) in a pentagonal bipyramid surrounding.

Abstract
Expression of the osteopontin (OPN) gene in the oviduct of the laying hen was studied. It was detected only in the egg shell gland (ESG), where massive calcification occurs. No OPN gene expression was detected in any other part of the oviduct, such as the magnum and isthmus. The OPN gene was expressed in a circadian fashion during the daily egg cycle only during the period of egg shell calcification. No OPN gene expression was detected in the ESG of a pre-laying hen before the onset of reproduction, or after forced removal of the egg close to its entrance into the ESG. OPN was found to be synthesized by the epithelial cells of the ESG lining the lumen. Upon synthesis, OPN is immediately secreted out of cells and accumulates in the egg shell. These findings demonstrate for the first time temporal and spatial association of OPN with egg shell calcification. OPN, which was found to be part of the organic matrix of the egg shell, may play an important role in egg shell calcification.

Abstract
Starch digestion and glucose absorption were determined in vivo along the chick's (Gallus domesticus) intestine, using 91Y and 51Cr-EDTA as unabsorbed reference substances. About 65% of the ingested starch was digested up to the end of the duodenum, 85% up to the end of the jejunum and about 97% at the terminal ileum. A fraction of about 97% of the glucose, ingested or released from ingested starch, was absorbed. The duodenum was the major site of glucose absorption which continued at a decreased rate down the small intestine. Glucose absorption increased linearily with luminal concentration with no indication of saturation. The apparent permeability for glucose was similar for the jejunum and ileum.

Abstract
One of the sequelae of idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) can be short adult stature. In this retrospective study adult height was normal in 90% of girls with untreated ICPP (mean, 161.4 +/- 7.7 cm). The height prediction made at the time of initial examination and the height age correlated with adult height. Therefore the initial height prediction can be useful in identifying those girls with ICPP at risk for short stature.

Abstract
Male chicks, fed low, normal, or high calcium- and cholecalciferol-containing diets for 14 days, were given three combined injections of 17 beta-estradiol and testosterone (7 and 2.4 mg/kg/dose, respectively) or the vehicle alone, at 3-day intervals. The hormonal treatment resulted in increased plasma calcium and medullary bone calcium concentrations, independently of the dietary calcium intake. Kidney 25-hydroxycholecalciferol-1-hydroxylase and duodenal calcium-binding protein were increased in response to gonadal hormones. The magnitude of this response markedly diminished with increased calcium intake and almost completely disappeared in chicks fed the high calcium diet. The results suggest that the increases in plasma calcium and medullary bone formation due to gonadal hormones are independent of calcium intake while the effect of hormones on duodenal calcium-binding protein and the 25-hydroxycholecalciferol-1-hydroxylase activity appears to be mediated through the change in calcium needs due to medullary bone formation.

Abstract
Pentagonal bipyramid FeII complexes have been investigated to evaluate their potential as Ising-spin building units for the preparation of heteropolynuclear complexes that are likely to behave as single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The considered monometallic complexes were prepared from the association of a divalent metal ion with pentadentate ligands that have a 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(hydrazone) core (H2 LN3O2R ). Their magnetic anisotropy was established by magnetometry to reveal their zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter D, which ranged between -4 and -13 cm-1 and was found to be modulated by the apical ligands (ROH versus Cl). The alteration of the D value by N-bound axial CN ligands, upon association with cyanometallates, was also assessed for heptacoordinated FeII as well as for related NiII and CoII derivatives. In all cases, N-coordinated cyanide ligands led to large magnetic anisotropy (i.e., -8 to -18 cm-1 for Fe and Ni, +33 cm-1 for Co). Ab initio calculations were performed on three FeII complexes, which enabled one to rationalize the role of the ligand on the nature and magnitude of the magnetic anisotropy. Starting from the pre-existing heptacoordinated complexes, a series of pentanuclear compounds were obtained by reactions with paramagnetic [W(CN)8 ]3- . Magnetic studies revealed the occurrence of ferromagnetic interactions between the spin carriers in all the heterometallic systems. Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation was observed for mononuclear FeII complexes (Ueff /kB up to 53 K (37 cm-1 ), τ0 =5×10-9 s), and SMM behavior was evidenced for a heteronuclear [Fe3 W2 ] derivative (Ueff /kB =35 K and τ0 =4.6 10-10 s), which confirmed that the parent complexes were robust Ising-type building units. High-field EPR spectroscopic investigation of the ZFS parameters for a Ni derivative is also reported.

Abstract
The absorption and excretion in vivo of cholecalciferol or 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-HCC) were determined in chicks (Gallus domesticus) and turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo). The overall net cholecalciferol or 25-HCC absorption in chicks and cholecalciferol in turkey poults was 66.5 +/- 3.3, 74.9 +/- 3.7 and 83.6 +/- 7.1% of the intake, respectively. The absorption of cholecalciferol or 25-HCC in chicks and turkeys occurred at the upper part of the intestine. 25-HCC, esters and non-polar metabolites of cholecalciferol or 25-HCC, and their polar metabolites, were secreted in the duodenum of chicks and turkeys but were partially reabsorbed at the upper part of the jejunum.
