Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recombinant human collagen peptide (RCP) is a recombinantly created xeno-free biomaterial enriched in arginine-glycine-aspartic acid sequences with good processability whose use for regenerative medicine applications is under investigation. The biocompatibility and osteogenic ability of RCP granules combined with β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) submicron particles (β-TCP/RCP) were recently demonstrated. In the present study, β-TCP/RCP was implanted into experimental periodontal tissue defects created in beagles to investigate its regenerative effects. METHODS An RCP solution was lyophilized, granulated, and thermally cross-linked into particles approximately 1 mm in diameter. β-TCP dispersion (1 wt%; 500 μL) was added to 100 mg of RCP granules to form β-TCP/RCP. A three-walled intrabony defect (5 mm × 3 mm × 4 mm) was created on the mesial side of the mandibular first molar and filled with β-TCP/RCP. RESULTS A micro-computed tomography image analysis performed at 8 weeks postoperative showed a significantly greater amount of new bone after β-TCP/RCP grafting (2.2-fold, P < 0.05) than after no grafting. Histological findings showed that the transplanted β-TCP/RCP induced active bone-like tissue formation including tartaric acid-resistant acid phosphatase- and OCN-positive cells as well as bioabsorbability. Ankylosis did not occur, and periostin-positive periodontal ligament-like tissue formation was observed. Histological measurements performed at 8 weeks postoperative revealed that β-TCP/RCP implantation formed 1.7-fold more bone-like tissue and 2.1-fold more periodontal ligament-like tissue than the control condition and significantly suppressed gingival recession and epithelial downgrowth (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS β-TCP/RCP implantation promoted bone-like and periodontal ligament-like tissue formation, suggesting its efficacy as a periodontal tissue regenerative material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Graphene oxide (GO) is a nanocarbon material with a high aspect ratio (width:thickness) and abundant anionic functional groups on its surface. In this study, we attached GO to the surface of medical gauze fibers, constructed a complex with a cationic surface active agent (CSAA), and demonstrated that the treated gauze exhibits antibacterial activity even after rinsing with water. METHODS Medical gauze was immersed in GO dispersion (0.001%, 0.01%, and 0.1%), rinsed with water, dried, and subjected to the Raman spectroscopy analysis. Subsequently, the gauze treated with 0.001% GO dispersion was immersed in 0.1% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) solution, immediately rinsed with water, and dried. Untreated, GO-only, and CPC-only gauzes were prepared for comparison. Each gauze was placed in a culture well, seeded with Escherichia coli or Actinomyces naeslundii, and turbidity was measured after 24 h of incubation. RESULTS The Raman spectroscopy analysis of the gauze after immersion and rinsing showed a G-band peak, indicating that GO remained on the surface of the gauze. The turbidity measurements indicated that GO/CPC-treated gauze (GO-treated and rinsed, followed by CPC-treatment and rinsing) significantly decreased turbidity compared to the other gauzes (P<0.05), suggesting that the GO/CPC complex remained on the gauze fibers even after water rinsing and showed antibacterial activity. CONCLUSIONS The GO/CPC complex imparts water-resistant antibacterial properties to gauze and has the potential to be widely used for the antimicrobial treatment of clothes.

Abstract
Antimicrobial surfactants contained in mouthrinse have excellent efficacy, but are not retained on the tooth surface (are rinsed away) due to their low water resistance and thus do not exhibit sustained antibacterial activity. We have developed a new coating method using graphene oxide (GO) that retains the surfactant on the tooth surface even after rinsing with water, thus providing a sustained antibacterial effect. Ultra-thin films of GO and an antimicrobial agent were prepared by (1) applying GO to the substrate surface, drying, and thoroughly rinsing with water to remove excess GO to form an ultrathin film (almost a monolayer, transparent) on the substrate surface, then (2) applying antimicrobial cationic surface active agents (CSAAs) on the GO film to form a composite coating film (GO/CSAA). GO/CSAA formation was verified by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ζ-potential and contact angle measurements. GO/CSAA was effective at inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens for up to 7 days of storage in water, and antibacterial activity was recovered by reapplication of the CSAA. Antibacterial GO/CSAA films were also formed on a tooth substrate. The results suggest that GO/CSAA coatings are effective in preventing oral infections.

Abstract
There have been several research studies on efficient methods for analysis and classification of electromyography (EMG) signals and adoption of wavelet functions, which is a promising approach for determining the spectral distribution of the signal. This study compares distinct time-frequency analysis methods for investigating the EMG activity of the thigh and calf muscles during gait among non-diabetic subjects and diabetic neuropathic patients. It also attempts to verify, by adaptive optimal kernel and discrete wavelet transform, whether there are EMG alterations related to diabetic neuropathy in the lower limb muscles during gait. The results show that diabetics might not keep up with the mechanical demands of walking by changing muscle fibre recruitment strategies, as seen in the control group. Moreover, principal components analysis indicates more alterations in diabetic motor strategies, and we identify that diabetic subjects need other strategies with different muscle energy production and frequencies to carry out their daily activities.

Abstract
Early peripheral lung cancer is defined as a tumor whose diameter is within 20 mm and that has not metastasized to lymph nodes. We developed thoracoscopic surgery (two windows method) in 1993. We have been conducting this thoracoscopic surgery in early peripheral lung cancers to identify possible indications as well as to clarify problems related to early peripheral lung cancer. The subjects of this study were 176 tumors, with diameters within 30 mm, including 97 lung cancers with diameters within 20 mm. Of the 97 tumors 20 mm or less in diameter, 18 were N 1 or more severe (N 1, 8 cases: N 2, 10 cases). One patient (N 2) died of bone metastasis and two patients died due to diseases other than lung cancer. Nearly 20% of the patients with tumors 20 mm or less were in the advanced stage, suggesting that mediastinal lymph node resection is necessary. Based on these results, it is advisable to define tumors with a diameter of no more than 10 mm as early peripheral lung cancer.

Abstract
This report describes the presence of type 1 fimbriae on Shigella boydii 5 which agglutinate guinea pig erythrocytes and feature mannose-sensitive adherence. Morphologically, the fimbriae were thin, rigid cylinders 2-5 microm in length and 35 nm in diameter, and the organella retained axial holes. This is the first study to have revealed the existence of type 1 fimbriae on S. boydii.

Abstract
We have experienced an outbreak of dysentery in Nagasaki. Shigella sonnei were positively cultured from 467 patients out of suspected 821 cases, and 346 patients were admitted. 121 patients were treated with oral antimicrobials in the outpatient clinic. Five patients were diagnosed as secondary infection. We treated a total of 96 patients in Nagasaki Municipal Medical Center, and studied the clinical and bacterial features in these 96 patients. Chief complaints included fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Most diarrheal patients showed waterly diarrhea and only a few were bloody (3 of 47). Treatment of levofloxacine 300 mg a day for 5 days successfully eliminated S. sonnei from all culture positive patients. An environmental surveillance revealed that water in a well at the university to which many patients were using was the origin of the infection with positive cultures of S. sonnei. No difference between the clinical and environmental isolates was observed in results on biochemical, serological and enzymatic tests. All isolates were susceptible to levofloxacin and to ofloxacin, but three isolates showed resistance of fosfomycin with MIC above 64 micrograms/ml. In analysis of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, both clinical and environmental isolates were considered to be closely related.

Abstract
Pili were detected using electron microscopy in clinical isolates of Shigella flexneri which had been continuously subcultivated in liquid media. Morphologically, the pili appeared as thin, flexible, cylindrical structures of up to 2-5 microns in length and about 3-5 nm in diameter. Two strains showed mannose-resistant (MR) hemagglutination to fresh fowl erythrocytes (type 4), and one to tannic acid-treated horse erythrocyte (type 3) pili. These pili are novel and different from the mannose-sensitive (MS) type 1 pili described by Duguid and Gillies.

Abstract
A novel bacterium, Protomonas extorquens was isolated from sputum, pleural effusion and ascitis in four cases of pulmonary infection by buffered charcoal yeast extract agar (B-CYE) which was generally used for Legionella spp. Three cases were so-called immunocompromised hosts (2 malignant diseases, 1 renal failure), and they died from underlying diseases. Protomonas extorquens was newly named by Komagata in 1984, which was characterized by production of pink pigment, growth in methanol medium and positive production of oxidase and catalase. This organism is ordinarily isolated from soil and dead leaves. This is the first report for isolation of P. extorquens from clinical specimens in Japan and it seems to have a significant role in immunocompromised hosts.

Abstract
Transthoracic needle aspiration of the lung in guinea pigs with experimental pseudomonas pneumonia was evaluated. The number of bacteria in aspirates correlated well with that of bacteria in the lungs which showed diffuse pneumonia (10(7) inoculum group). The number of deaths of experimental animals increased together with an increase of the times of aspiration. This procedure was also investigated in 16 patients of pneumonia and 17 patients of pulmonary abscess. The isolation rate of pathogen from pneumonia was 31.3% and that from pulmonary abscess 58.8%. A higher isolation rate was obtained with purulent aspirates. Predominantly anaerobic bacteria were isolated, and in pulmonary abscess usually in association with other bacteria. This method could be applied with success, for determining responsible pathogens. Even the normal oropharyngeal flora such as alpha-Streptococcus could be identified as pathogens. The complication rate was relatively low (6 out of 33 patients, 18.2%) including hemoptysis as a major one and pneumothorax or bloody sputum as minor ones. Transthoracic needle aspiration was reevaluated in experimental and clinical materials and was found to be an excellent and safe method for determining the responsible pathogen of respiratory infection.

Abstract
Efficient transformation and conjugation systems for use in phytopathogenic strains of Xanthomonas species were developed with a dual-function plasmid vector, pBXC12, which was constructed from a newly isolated Xanthomonas citri plasmid, pXCL6, and pBR328. By using this system, pBR328 could also transform the same strains of Xanthomonas. The systems make useful cloning vectors for the study of genes involved in the plant pathogenesis of this species.

Abstract
Cystine lyase degrades l-cystine by a beta-elimination to form cysteine persulfide, pyruvate, and ammonia. This enzyme is common in Brassica sp. and has been purified to homogeneity from extracts of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var botrytis) buds. Two isozymes were separated on DEAE-Fractogel columns and the first peak, cystine lyase I further purified to homogeneity. The purified enzyme had a narrow range of substrate specificity with l-cystine and S-alkyl-l-cysteine sulfoxides being the primary substrates. The K(m) for l-cystine was 1.9 millimolar and for S-ethyl-l-cysteine sulfoxide was 15.6 millimolar, suggesting that l-cystine would be preferred in vivo. Using gel filtration and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis the molecular weight of the holoenzyme was estimated as 152,000 composed of subunits of approximately 49,000. This strongly suggests the native enzyme is a trimer. The presence of carbohydrate in the native enzyme was detected at the level of 5.8% on a weight basis. Except for the ability to utilize l-cystine as a substrate there are many similarities between cystine lyase I and the alliin lyase of onion (Allium cepa).
