Some synthetic cyclitol derivatives alleviate the effect of water deficit in cultivated and wild-type chickpea species. JOURNAL OF PLANT PHYSIOLOGY 2014; 171:807-16. Abstract
Cyclitols were prepared from corresponding allylic hydroperoxides, synthesized by photooxygenation of the appropriate cyclic alkenes. These hydroperoxides were then separately treated with a catalytic amount of OsO4. Synthesized dl-cyclopentane-1,2,3-triol 9 (A), dl-cyclohexane-1,2,3-triol 12 (B), and dl-cycloheptane-1,2,3-triol 15 (C) were used in the investigation of plant stress. Antioxidants, lipid peroxidation, and water status of chickpea species exposed to synthetic cyclitols under water deficit were examined. Cyclitol derivatives significantly decreased leaf water potential, lipid peroxidation and H2O2 levels of wild and cultivated species under water deficit. Cyclitol treatments affected antioxidant enzyme activities differently in both species under water deficit. The highest SOD activity was found in A10-treated Cicer arietinum (cultivar) and C10-treated Cicer reticulatum (wild type) under water deficit. CAT activity increased in C. arietinum exposed to A cyclitols, while it increased slightly and then decreased in cyclitol-treated C. reticulatum under stress conditions. AP and GR activities were significantly increased in C. arietinum under water deficit. AP activity increased in C derivatives-treated C. arietinum, while it remained unchanged in C. reticulatum on day 1 of water deficit. GR activity was increased in A derivaties-treated C. arietinum and C derivatives-treated C. reticulatum on day 1 of water deficit and decreased with severity of stress (except for B10-treated C. arietinum). The level of AsA in C treatments and GSH in A treatments increased in C. arietinum on day 1 of water deficit, while in C. reticulatum, AsA and GSH levels decreased under stress conditions. We conclude that exogenous synthetic cyclitol derivatives are biologically active and noncytotoxic, resulting in higher antioxidant activities and lower water potential, thus increasing the water deficit tolerance of chickpea under water deficit, especially of cultivated chickpea. We also propose that synthetic cyclitol derivatives can reduce reactive oxygen species and membrane damage and are beneficial for stress adaptation.

The effect of 8-week different-intensity walking exercises on serum hepcidin, IL-6, and iron metabolism in pre-menopausal women. Physiol Int 2017; 104:52-63. Abstract
Objective
Hepcidin may be an important mediator in exercise-induced iron deficiency. Despite the studies investigating acute exercise effects on hepcidin and markers of iron metabolism, we found no studies examining the chronic effects of walking exercises (WE) on hepcidin and markers of iron metabolism in premenopausal women. The chronic effects of two 8-week different-intensity WE on hepcidin, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and markers of iron metabolism in pre-menopausal women were examined.
Methods
Exercise groups (EG) [moderate tempo walking group (MTWG), n = 11; brisk walking group (BWG), n = 11] walked 3 days/week, starting from 30 to 51 min. Control group (CG; n = 8) did not perform any exercises. BWG walked at ∼70%–75%; MTWG at ∼50%–55% of HRRmax. VO2max, hepcidin, IL-6, and iron metabolism markers were determined before and after the intervention.
Results
VO2max increased in both EGs, favoring the BWG. Hepcidin increased in the BWG (p < 0.01) and CG (p < 0.05). IL-6 decreased in the BWG and the MTWG (p < 0.05; p < 0.01). While iron, ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin saturation levels did not change in any group, total iron binding capacity (p < 0.05), red blood cells (p < 0.05), and hematocrit (p < 0.01) increased only in the BWG.
Conclusion
Both WE types may be useful to prevent inflammation. However, brisk walking is advisable due to the positive changes in VO2max and some iron metabolism parameters, which may contribute to prevent iron deficiency. The increase in hepcidin levels remains unclear and necessitates further studies.

Abstract
AIM Paediatric gastrointestinal injuries (GIIs) are rare, and the aim of this multicentre study was to evaluate their outcomes in a large cohort. METHODS Hospital databases of 10 European paediatric surgical centres were reviewed for paediatric traumatic GIIs managed between 2000-2010. RESULTS Ninety-seven patients with a median age of 9 years (0-17 years) were identified, with 72 blunt and 25 penetrating GIIs. Initial diagnostics in 90 patients led to correct diagnosis in 71%. Diagnostics were delayed in 26 patients (median 24 h). Eighty-two patients required surgery (67 laparotomy, 12 laparoscopy and three other approaches). There was a 50% conversion in the laparoscopic group. Median hospital stay was 10 days (range 1-137 days), with longer duration influenced by associated injuries (n = 41). Diagnosis <24 h was associated with significantly shorter hospital stay compared to more than 24 h (p = 0.011). In one-third of patients, morbidities were not related to a diagnostic delay or type of injury. There were five lethal outcomes, four due to associated injuries. CONCLUSION Initial diagnostics in traumatic paediatric GIIs provide false negatives in one-third of patients. Diagnostic delay <24 h is associated with a significantly shorter hospital stay. Although laparoscopy is associated with a conversion rate of 50%, it can be used for diagnosis in suspected cases to avoid nontherapeutic laparotomy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Irisin is a recently discovered novel adipomyokine that induces an increase in total body energy expenditure, improves insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. It has been shown that circulating levels of irisin are low in patients with obesity, diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance. However, the information about the level of circulating irisin in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is controversial. MATERIAL AND METHODS Serum irisin was measured by an ELISA in a longitudinal prospective cohort study in 221 women. There were 156 healthy pregnant and 65 women with GDM. RESULTS Circulating irisin levels were significantlly higher in the middle pregnancy compared with early pregnancy levels in healthy pregnant women and in women with GDM. Serum irisin levels were found to be lower in GDM compared to healthy pregnant women during first trimester but the difference was not observed throughout the pregnancy and it was comparable in middle pregnancy. There was a significant inverse correlation of BMI with serum irisin (r = -0.193, p = 0.004) and between HbA1c and mean glucose of OGTT with serum irisin (r =-0.377, p =0.0001) and (r = -0.147, p:0.03) in the early pregnancy of pregnant women repectively. CONCLUSIONS The present study shows that serum irisin level increases throughout the gestational period from early to middle pregnancy in women with GDM, but there is no effect of irisin on the development of GDM.

Abstract
Intestinal mucositis poses a significant concern associated with cancer therapy. This study aims to investigate the protective and/or healing effect of fig seed oil (FSO) on 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced intestinal mucositis by targeting inflammatory markers and histologic changes in rats. Albino Wistar adult rats were randomly divided into four groups, including three male and three female animals. All the animals in the four groups had a normal standard diet and water throughout the experimental period, which lasted up to 11 days. Rats were administered FSO 0.6 mL (mucositis FSO group) and FSO 0.2 mL (mucositis FSO-R group) daily throughout the experiment. These two groups and one additional group (mucositis group) were given an intraperitoneal injection of 5-FU (300 mg/kg) on Day 5 of the experiment. In contrast, the fourth group (Control group) was given an intraperitoneal saline injection on Day 5 of the experiment. FSO treatment ameliorated 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis. On immunohistologic examination, FSO suppressed significantly the activation of NF-κB and expression of IL-β and TNF-α of the harvested intestinal tissue. The reduced dose FSO (mucositis FSO-R) was as effective as the full dose (mucositis FSO) in suppressing IL-β and TNF-α production, but was not as effective as the full dose in suppressing NF-κB. On light microscopy, FSO attenuated significantly 5-FU-induced anomalies, such as the reduction of intestinal villus length and Goblet cell count. The reduced dose FSO (mucositis FSO-R) was as effective as the full dose (mucositis FSO) in restoring villus length, but was not as effective as the full dose in restoring Goblet cell count. The findings of the study suggest that FSO inhibits 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis via modulation of mucosal inflammation.

Abstract
Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion, activity, or both. Carbohydrate counting, known for optimal metabolic control, plays in the therapeutic strategy in diabetes. In the last decade, an increasing amount of research has been conducted on carbohydrate counting, and the literature on this topic has been published in academic journals. This bibliometric analysis aimed to comprehensively review and analyze publications from this period, shedding light on trends, developments, and key contributors. The Expanded Science Citation Index published by the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science, which covers English-language articles published from 1993 to 2024, was used. We selected "carbohydrate counting", "carbohydrate count", "carbohydrate counts", "carbohydrate counts", and similar words as "TOPIC" to search for related articles. All basic information about each article were collected, including authors, countries, citations, and keywords. The findings emphasized the need for continued research in this area and to learn more about studies showing the relationship between carbohydrate counting and the pathophysiology of diabetes, treatment, complications, and technologies. This analysis summarizes the general trends and key findings of research on carbohydrate counting over the past years and provides guidance for future research.

Abstract
Due to the lack of effective medical treatment for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), we aimed to evaluate new treatment options. In particular, our goal was to investigate and compare the effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and Adalimumab treatment on tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and oxidative stress during the development of NASH in a rat model of the disease. Our study included a total of 35 female Wistar albino rats that were divided into 5 groups of 7 each, and evaluated over a 6 week period. One group received a normal diet, while the other four groups received a methionine and choline deficient (MCD) diet. One of the groups receiving the MCD diet did not take any medicine, while the other three were administered NAC, adalimumab, or a NAC/adalimumab combination therapy. NASH was successfully established in the MCD diet group. Levels of TNF-α were effectively suppressed in the three groups that received therapy. Even though adalimumab significantly enhanced suppression of TNF-α, the NASH score was suppressed to a more statistically significant extent in the groups receiving NAC. Our study showed that TNF-α and oxidative stress play an important role in NASH pathogenesis. The antioxidant agent, NAC, was found to be superior to the anti-TNF agent, Adalimumab, in the improvement of total NASH score. Although these drugs did not prevent the development of NASH, it was shown that they mildly reverse the NASH histopathology score, suggesting improvement of and overall liver function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to investigate and compare mental health, health-related quality of life, and sleep levels of patients with various stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and undergoing different renal replacement therapies and analyze the factors affecting these parameters. METHODS Overall, 140 patients with a mean age of 43 ± 14 years were recruited into this study. Study groups [controls and patients with CKD undergoing predialysis, hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation (KT)] were evaluated using Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36), Kidney Disease Quality of Life-36 (KDQoL-36), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). RESULTS The KT group had the highest scores in physical and mental components of the subscales of SF-36 and KDQoL-36 but the lowest scores in PSQI and GHQ-12, indicating the best results in terms of mental health and quality of life, and sleep. Serum albumin and hemoglobin levels were positively correlated with several subscales of quality of life. Significant negative correlations were observed among PSQI, GHQ-12, and subscale scores of SF-36 and KDQoL-36. The HD group showed significantly lower scores in the subscales of symptoms and burden of kidney disease of KDQoL-36. CONCLUSION KDQoL was worse in the HD group and better in the KT group than in other groups. Serum albumin and hemoglobin levels, and Kt/V (dialyzer clearance of urea multiplied by dialysis time and normalized for urea distribution volume ) values of patients with CKD exerted a linear and significant effect on the quality of life, which showed a significant positive correlation with the quality of sleep and mental health. In contrast, serum calcium x phosphorus levels showed an inverse correlation with the subscale scores of KDQoL. HIPPOKRATIA 2020, 24(2): 51-58.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis (SSc), is a chronic autoimmune connective disease with an unknown etiology and poorly understood pathogenesis. The striking array of autoimmune, vascular, and fibrotic changes that develop in almost all patients makes SSc unique among connective tissue diseases. Although no animal model developed for SSc to date fully represents all features of human disease, some animal models that demonstrate features of SSc may help to better understand the pathogenesis of the disease and to develop new therapeutic options. In this review, we aimed to evaluate skin fibrosis and lung involvement in a bleomycin (BLM)-induced mouse model and to evaluate the differences between studies. METHODS A systematic literature review (PRISMA guideline) on PubMed and EMBASE (until May 2023, without limits) was performed. A primary literature search was conducted using the PubMed and EMBASE databases for all articles published from 1990 to May 2023. Review articles, human studies, and non-dermatological studies were excluded. Of the 38 non-duplicated studies, 20 articles were included. RESULTS Among inducible animal models, the BLM-induced SSc is still the most widely used. In recent years, the measurement of tissue thickness between the epidermal-dermal junction and the dermal-adipose tissue junction (dermal layer) has become more widely accepted. CONCLUSIONS In animal studies, it is important to simultaneously evaluate lung tissues in addition to skin fibrosis induced in mice by subcutaneous BLM application, following the 3R (replacement, reduction, and refinement) principle to avoid cruelty to animals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a novel parameter for cardiovascular research area. The higher values of NLR have been found to be associated with worse clinical outcomes in atherosclerotic heart disease, heart failure, heart valve disease and other various cardiovascular disorders. Although the relationship between NLR and almost all cardiovascular disorders have been investigated, the association between NLR and diastolic dysfunction remains unclear. We herein evaluated the association between NLR and diastolic dysfunction. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study population consisted of 41 hypertensive patients with any grade of diastolic dysfunction and 41 hypertensive patients without diastolic dysfunction determined by echocardiographic evaluation constituted the control group. RESULTS Mean NLR value was found to be 2.07 ± 0.82 in the diastolic dysfunction group while the control group had a mean value of 1.69 ± 0.60 (p = 0.020). The patients with diastolic dysfunction had significantly higher values of NLR. When grades of diastolic dysfunction were evaluated, NLR was 1.80 ± 0.82, 2.32 ± 0.73 and 2.75 ± 0.45 in patients with grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 diastolic dysfunction, respectively. The patients with higher grade of diastolic dysfunction had higher values of NLR (p = 0.001). None of the other hematologic parameters differed significantly in patients with diastolic dysfunction when compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS Patients with diastolic dysfunction had higher values of NLR compared to subjects without diastolic dysfunction. Furthermore higher grades of diastolic dysfunction were associated with higher levels of NLR. Further studies are needed to search the possible use of NLR as a marker for prognostic stratification in diastolic dysfunction which is associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes.
