Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a very limited amount of data available regarding the relationship between alopecia areata (AA) and psychiatric morbidity and quality of life (QoL) in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the psychiatric state and health-related quality of life (HRQL) of children and adolescents with AA, as well as their relationships with clinical parameters. METHODS The sample consisted of 74 children with AA aged 8-18 years. Questionnaires were used to evaluate the psychiatric status and HRQL of the patients. The study and control groups were divided into child and adolescent groups to exclude the effect of puberty on psychological condition. RESULTS In the child group, patients had higher state anxiety and trait anxiety scores; they also had lower parent-rated psychosocial and total area HRQL scores than the controls did. In addition, the depression score was prone to show a positive relationship with having AA in the children. In the adolescent group, however, only the state anxiety score had a significant association with AA. All of the parent-rated HRQL scores were also prone to being lower compared with controls in this age group. Regarding determinants of HRQL, prolonged disease duration and later disease onset had positive effects, whereas severity of scalp involvement, trait anxiety and depression had negative effects, for the sample as a whole. CONCLUSIONS Alopecia areata is associated with poor psychiatric status and QoL, especially in childhood. The impact of the disease on QoL occurs through both clinical and psychiatric parameters.

Abstract
The presence of anomalous muscle bundles may produce a pressure gradient between the inflow and outflow portions of the right ventricle, thus resulting in double-chambered right ventricle bearing troublesome clinically in its diagnosis. The aim of the present study was to review the diagnostic criteria. Fifty-two patients with a double-chambered right ventricle were seen during an 8-year period. They ranged in age at the catheterization from 4 months to 17 years (mean 7.5 +/- 4.4 years). Diagnosis was confirmed in 51 patients at cardiac catheterization and in other one on operation. The majority of the patients had associated cardiac anomalies: there were 33 ventricular septal defect (63%), 21 pulmonary valve stenosis (40%), nine atrial septal defect (17%), and four double-outlet right ventricle. The electrocardiograms revealed upright T waves alone in right precordial leads suggesting right ventricular hypertrophy in 33% of the patients. At cardiac catheterization, there was a pressure gradient of 20-160 mmHg between the right ventricular inflow and outflow portions. Forty patients have had surgery and four have undergone balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty. Surgical treatment was planned for two patients and other six had no indication for treatment.

Abstract
Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a congenital anomaly in which one or more, but not all, of the pulmonary veins are connected to a systemic vein or to the right atrium directly. Its incidence is higher in autopsy series than in clinical series. We report 51 cases of PAPVR diagnosed by cardiac catheterization and evaluated from the aspects of age, sex, type and associated anomalies and diseases.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was designed to examine the functional loss in ankylosing spondylitis and explore the relationship between disability and various factors such as age, disease duration, disease activity, spinal mobility, chest expansion, peripheral joint involvement, radiological changes, and psychosocial well-being. METHOD Forty-two patients were included in this cross-sectional study. RESULTS The results showed that 37 patients had mild to moderate disability, two patients had severe disability, and three patients did not report any functional loss. Spearman correlation analyses showed that disability was strongly correlated with spinal mobility measures, disease activity measures, and disease duration. Also, patients with peripheral joint involvement had greater disability. When the predictive effect of five independent variables was studied by multiple regression analysis, it was found that the most powerful predictors of functional loss in AS patients were cervical rotation, modified Schober's test, and pain. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that functional consequences of AS are constituted by multiple impairments and each needs to be managed by an integrated physiatric approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether Behçet's disease (BD), being a systemic vasculitis of unknown aetiology, is associated with hepatitis viruses (HAV, HBV, HCV and HEV). METHODS In addition to 124 patients [male:female (M/F): 73/51], all fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of the International Study Group for BD (1991), 14 patients with systemic necrotizing vasculitis (M/F: 7/7), 47 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (M/F: 36/11) and 51 healthy controls (M/F: 22/29) were also included in this study. Serological markers of four different types of hepatitis (anti-HAV IgM, total anti-HAV, HBsAg, anti-HBs, total anti-HBc, anti-HBc IgM, anti-HCV and anti-HEV) were studied in all cases. RESULTS There was no difference between the groups with respect to HAV, HCV and HEV serologies. Anti-HBs positivity was observed less frequently in BD compared with healthy controls and systemic vasculitis (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Serological evidence of previous HAV, HCV and HEV infections was not significantly different between Behçet's patients and other groups. However, previous HBV infection was found in a significantly lower number of BD patients as compared with healthy controls and systemic vasculitic patients.

Abstract
The current study was designed to investigate the changes that occur in depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and health-related quality of life during methylphenidate (MPH) treatment in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Forty-five treatment naive children with ADHD, aged 8-14, were assessed based on self, parent and teacher reports at the baseline and at the end of the first and third month of MPH treatment regarding changes in inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Changes in the quality of life were also noted. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests with Bonferroni corrections were conducted in order to evaluate the data. Symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity were significantly reduced (p < 0.017) following a three-month MPH treatment. There were significant decreases in depression (p = 0.004), trait anxiety (p = 0.000) and checking compulsion symptom scores (p = 0.001). Moreover, parents reported significant improvements in psychosocial (p = 0.001) and total scores (p = 0.009) of quality of life, despite no change in physical health scores (p > 0.05). Children's ratings of quality of life measures showed no significant changes in physical health and psychosocial scores (p > 0.05), while total scores significantly improved (p = 0.001) after the treatment. Over a three-month MPH treatment, depression, trait anxiety and checking compulsion symptoms decreased and quality of life seemed to improve along with those of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Only a limited number of studies have studied the relationship between vitiligo and psychiatric morbidity and quality of life (QOL) in children and adolescents. AIM To determine levels of depression, anxiety and QOL in children and adolescents with vitiligo. METHODS In total, 41 outpatients with vitiligo aged 8-18 years and a control group were assessed using the Child Depression Inventory (CDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventories for Children (STAI-C) and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, Parent and Child versions (PedsQL-P and PedsQL-C). Both study and control groups were divided into child (8-12 years old) and adolescent (13-18 years old) groups to exclude the effect of puberty on psychological condition. RESULTS Children with vitiligo scored higher on the CDI compared with controls; no other significant differences were found between the groups. Vitiligo severity correlated negatively with psychosocial score on PedsQL-P in the adolescent group. Duration of the illness was positively related to physical health score on PedsQL-P in the child group. Involvement of the face, head or neck in boys and involvement of the genital area and legs in girls were related to impaired QOL. CONCLUSIONS Vitiligo relates to the severity of depression in children, but a similar effect was not observed in adolescents. We suggest that the location of the lesions is a significant factor that leads to QOL impairment, possibly because of its effects on identity development.

Abstract
Two hundred infants and two hundred preschool children were randomly assigned to receive either 10 micrograms of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine (GenHevac B) intramuscularly (i.m.) or 2 micrograms intradermally (ID) in the deltoid region at 0, 1 and 6 months. Antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) was tested eight weeks after the third vaccine dose. Standard dose i.m. and low-dose ID administration of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine produced comparable rates of anti-HBs equal to or higher than 10 mIU ml-1 in infants (98% and 94%, respectively) and preschool children (98% and 100%, respectively). Although i.m. vaccination produced higher anti-HBs concentrations than ID vaccination both in infants (geometric mean titre-GMT, 935 versus 621 mIU ml-1) and preschool children (GMT, 1393 versus 804 mIU ml-1), the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The preschool children tended to have higher anti-HBs concentrations than the infants. No clinically serious adverse effects were observed in both vaccine groups; however, induration and hyperpigmentation at the injection site were more often seen in the study population that was vaccinated intradermally. We conclude that intradermal administration of 2 micrograms recombinant hepatitis B vaccine is safe and effective in infants and preschool children, and may be an acceptable, less expensive alternative to full-dose i.m. vaccination for mass immunization, especially in developing countries.

Abstract
It has been suggested that neurotrophins are involved in the etiopathogenesis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to investigate whether there are differences in serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and neurotrophin-3 (NTF3) levels between children with ADHD and healthy controls. A total of 110 treatment-naive children with the combined presentation of ADHD and 44 healthy controls aged 8-18 years were enrolled in this study. The severity of ADHD symptoms was determined by scores on the Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short and Conners' Teacher Rating Scale-Revised Short. The severity of depression and anxiety symptoms of the children were evaluated by the self-report inventories. Serum levels of neurotrophins were measured using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. The multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) revealed a significant main effect of groups in the levels of serum neurotrophins, an effect that was independent of age, sex, and the severity of the depression and anxiety. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that the mean serum GDNF and NTF3 levels of ADHD patients were significantly higher than that of controls. However, serum BDNF and NGF levels did not show any significant differences between groups. No correlations between the levels of serum neurotrophins and the severity of ADHD were observed. These results suggest that elevated serum GDNF and NTF3 levels may be related to ADHD in children.

Abstract
This study analyzed 28 thrombotic children with various cardiac disorders. They comprise 17% of a total of 168 patients with thrombosis from a single center. Among the 28 patients, 21 had congenital heart disease and 7 were diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. The patients with thrombosis were evaluated for congenital and acquired thrombotic risk factors. In addition to cardiac disorders, two, three, or more risk factors were present in 61% of the children with thrombosis. Two common mutations, namely factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A mutations, were found in 6 patients (22%). Nine patients (32%) died of infection, congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, thrombosis, operation, or a combination of these; two patients required surgical intervention. Following cardiac angiography, due to necrosis, amputation of the right index finger and right lower extremity was performed on 1 patient. The second patient's index fingers had to be amputated and resection of the bowel was performed following the operation on coarctation of the aorta. This study indicates that congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy are two common cardiac disorders that may lead to the development of thrombosis. The majority of thrombosis develops within the heart and/or its great vessels. The second predominant site for thromboembolic symptoms is in the brain, including sinovenous thrombosis.

Abstract
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often comorbid with anxiety disorders and previous studies observed that anxiety could have an impact on the clinical course of ADHD and comorbid disruptive behavioral disorders (conduct disorders and oppositional-defiant disorders). Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a different concept from anxiety per se and it is believed to represent the constitutionally based sensitivity of individuals to anxiety and anxiety symptoms. We aimed to assess the associations between anxiety, AS and symptoms of disruptive behavioral disorders (DBD) in a clinical sample of children and adolescents with ADHD. The sample consisted of 274 treatment naive children with ADHD aged 8-17 years. The severity of ADHD symptoms and comorbid DBD were assessed via parent rated Turgay DSM-IV-Based Child and Adolescent Behavioral Disorders Screening and Rating Scale (T-DSM-IV-S), Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS), and Conners' Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS). AS and severity of anxiety symptoms of children were evaluated by self-report inventories. The association between anxiety, AS, and DBD was evaluated using structural equation modeling. Analyses revealed that AS social subscale scores negatively predicted symptoms of conduct disorder (CD) reported in T-DSM-IV-S. On the other hand, CD symptoms positively predicted severity of anxiety. No direct relationships were detected between anxiety, AS and oppositional-defiant behavior scores in any scales. These results may suggest a protective effect of AS social area on the development of conduct disorder in the presence of a diagnosis of ADHD, while the presence of symptoms of CD may be a vulnerability factor for the development of anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents with ADHD.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate serum cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and oxytocin levels of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) combined presentation and those diagnosed with ADHD combined presentation and coexisting conduct disorder. A total of 74 drug-naive children with ADHD combined presentation alone, 32 children with ADHD combined presentation + conduct disorder, and 42 healthy controls were included. The severities of ADHD and conduct disorder symptoms were assessed via parent- and teacher-rated questionnaires. The severity of aggression, anxiety, and depression symptoms of the children were assessed by the self-report inventories. Independent of potential confounders, including age, sex, pubertal stage, and severity of depression and anxiety, serum oxytocin levels of the ADHD combined presentation + conduct disorder group were significantly lower than those of both the ADHD combined presentation alone and control groups. There was also a trend for the ADHD combined presentation + conduct disorder group to show lower serum DHEA levels than that of the ADHD combined presentation alone group. However, serum cortisol levels did not show significant alterations among the groups. These findings suggest that oxytocin and DHEA may play a role in the pathophysiology of conduct disorder, at least in the presence of ADHD combined presentation.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify potential differences in serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF) and neurotrophin-3 (NTF3) levels in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to healthy controls. The possible relationship between serum neurotrophin levels and suicidality in adolescents with MDD was also addressed. Methods: A total of 70 treatment-free adolescents with MDD and 40 healthy controls aged 11 to 19 years were enrolled. The severity of suicidality was determined using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale, and the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms were evaluated by self-report inventories. Serum levels of neurotrophins were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The mean serum BDNF levels were significantly higher in adolescents with MDD than in control subjects; no significant difference was found between the groups for serum GDNF, NGF and NTF3 levels. No correlations were found between the levels of serum neurotrophins and the severity of depression or suicidality. Conclusions: The study results suggest that elevated serum BDNF levels may be related to MDD in adolescents. However, our findings did not support a role for neurotrophins in suicidality.Key pointsSerum BDNF levels were higher in adolescents with MDD than in controls. No significant alterations of serum levels of GDNF, NGF and NTF3 were evident in adolescents with MDD.Neurotrophin levels were not associated with suicidal ideation and behaviours.

Abstract
In this article, the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of 137 children with cardiomyopathy admitted to the Hacettepe Pediatric Cardiology Unit were studied and the prognosis was evaluated after a follow-up period of 24 +/- 5 months. It was found that the highest proportion of patients were residents of Ankara, followed by the Northern and the Central Anatolian regions, and consanguinity between their parents was more common than the proportion for Turkey as a whole. Most of the patients had dilated cardiomyopathy (78.9%) and the age at which symptoms appeared varied according to the type of cardiomyopathy. A high proportion of patients came to the hospital with complaints of dyspnea and a decrease in effort capacity. The most common findings on the physical examination were hepatomegaly and tachycardia. Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic evaluations were made for all patients and cardiac catheterization and endomyocardial biopsy were performed when necessary. The outcome was as follows: 34.5% improved, 45.7% remained stable, 9.5% deteriorated and 10.3% died.

Abstract
Several studies have documented the efficacy of low-dose intradermal administration of hepatitis B vaccine. However, little is known about the duration of protection provided by low-dose intradermal administration of hepatitis B vaccine. This study reports results from a 5-year follow up period of 200 healthy children (100 infants and 100 preschool children) immunized intradermally with 2 microg doses of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine (GenHevac B) at months 0,1, and 6. In the 8th week after the third vaccine dose, 97% of the children developed anti-HBs antibodies higher than or equal to 10 mlU ml(-1), and the antiHBs geometric mean titre (GMT) was 676 mlU ml(-1). In month 18 and year 5, the anti-HBs GMT decreased to approximately one-third (220 mlU ml(-1)) and one-tenth (68 mlU ml(-1)) of the initial levels, respectively. However, 87% of the children had protective levels of anti-HBs (> or =10 mlU ml(-1)) after 5 years. Among 156 children followed for 5 years, none became positive for anti-HBc and/or HbsAg. Seven children who were seronegative after 5 years developed anti-HBs antibodies higher than 1000 mlU ml(-1) after an additional 10 microg intramuscular hepatitis B vaccine. Persistent immunologic memory over periods of 5 years or more is evident, the anamnestic antibody response to a booster dose of vaccine, even in these children who have lost antibody. We conclude that intradermal administration of 2 microg recombinant hepatitis B vaccine provides long-term protection against hepatitis B virus in infants and preschool children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom dimensions on Internet addiction (IA) after controlling for Internet usage features among high school students. METHODS This study consisted of 640 students (331 females and 309 males) ranging from 14 to 19 years of age. The Internet Addiction Scale, the Conners-Wells' Adolescent Self-Report Scale-Short Form, and a personal information form were completed by the participants. Statistical analyses were conducted for both sexes and the total sample. RESULTS According to the logistic regression analysis, attention deficit and playing online games were significant predictors of IA in both sexes. Other predictors of IA included behavioral problems for females, total weekly Internet usage time, and lifelong total Internet use for males. Hyperactivity and other Internet usage features did not predict IA. CONCLUSION These results suggest that attention deficit and playing online games are important determinants of IA in this age group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been found to be related to overweight/obesity in children and adolescents, but it is a heterogeneous disorder, and the relationships between the dimensions of ADHD and overweight/obesity are not clear. The aim of this study was to explore which dimensions of the disorder are specifically associated with overweight/obesity. METHODS The study sample consisted of 300 treatment-naive children with ADHD and 75 healthy controls aged 7-17 years. The ADHD module of the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version was used to diagnose ADHD. The severity of ADHD symptoms was assessed via Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). The weight, height, and breast-feeding duration of the study samples and controls were recorded. Body mass index (BMI) was categorized according to the national age/sex-specific reference values. RESULTS The rate of overweight/obese children was higher in the ADHD group. The association between ADHD symptoms and BMI percentile scores was evaluated using structural equation modeling. In that model, it was observed that the Cognitive Problems/Inattentive and Oppositional subscores of the CPRS had a positive predictive effect on the BMI percentile scores, but breast-feeding duration had a negative predictive effect on the BMI percentile scores. CONCLUSION Inattention, oppositionality and breast-feeding duration were associated with overweight/obesity in children and adolescents with ADHD. Longitudinal studies are needed to more fully understand this relationship and the mechanisms underlying the association between ADHD and overweight/obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND TT virus (TTV) DNA has been found in a large proportion of patients with different forms of non-A-G hepatitis, however the clinical importance is unclear. We aimed to determine the genotypes of TTV isolates found in blood donors and different patient groups from the western part of Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS TT DNA was investigated in serum samples of 91 volunteer blood donors (BD), 105 thalassemia (TH) patients, ten patients with fulminant hepatitis (FH) and 16 hemodialysis (HD) patients by heminested PCR using primers NG059, NG061 and NG063 from the ORF1 region. 39 isolates were genotyped by analyzing the partial sequence of ORF1. RESULTS TTV DNA was found in 75% of HD, 80% of FH, 61% of TH patients and in 51.6% of BD. Among the sequenced isolates, 14 (35.9%) belonged to genotype 1 (G1) and 25 (64.1%) belonged to genotype 2 (G2). Among the G2 sequences, 22 were grouped as G2c. CONCLUSION TTV infection was common in the population studied, even with moderately sensitive primers. G2 was the major genotype of the studied population without any significant differences in distribution between various patient groups and BD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cerebral palsy (CP) interferes with the quality of life (QOL) of children with CP, and given that parents report having to often guide their children's decision making, it is important to understand the psychosocial factors that have a potential influence on parent-proxy reports. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of maternal anxiety and depression symptoms on parent proxy-reported health-related QOL (HRQOL) for children with CP, while controlling other clinical and demographical variables that may have affect HRQOL. METHODS The HRQOL scores of 97 outpatients with CP, aged 7-18 years, were assessed using the Pediatric QOL Inventory, Parent version (PedsQL-P). Each patient's type of CP, gross and fine motor function levels, severity of intellectual disability (ID), and other clinical variables were recorded. The levels of depression symptoms in each mother were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the levels of anxiety symptoms were assessed with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). RESULTS According to regression analyses, male gender, severity of ID, and higher mothers' BAI scores had negative effects on the PedsQL-P physical scores, and severity of ID and higher mothers' BDI scores had negative effects on the PedsQL-P psychosocial scores. Regarding the determinants of total HRQOL, severity of ID, GMFCS score, and higher mothers' BDI scores negatively impacted the PedsQL-P total scores. CONCLUSION Our findings show significant predictor effects of the mothers' anxiety and depressive symptoms, independent from other clinical variables, on the mother-rated HRQOL scores in children with CP.

Abstract
A group of 67 children with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) were studied, and 35 were given iron treatment according to a regimen that gives iron to patients with a hematocrit (Hct) below 60%. The patients were categorized as iron-deficient and iron-sufficient according to their transferrin saturation and ferritin values. The pretreatment hemoglobin (Hb) and Hct values of the groups were similar. The mean Hct was nearly three times as much as the mean Hb in the iron-sufficient group and more than three times as much as the Hb in the iron-deficient group. Excessive erythrocytosis in the iron-deficient group was impressive. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values were below 72.7 fl in all of the iron-deficient patients. After treatment the Hb, Hct, transferrin saturation, and ferritin increased significantly in both groups, with the increments greater in the iron-deficient group. Increments in the erythrocyte (RBC) count were significant in the iron-sufficient group but insignificant in the iron-deficient one. Increments of MCV in the iron-deficient group were significant but insignificant in the iron-sufficient group. Our study demonstrated that prediction of Hb, RBC count, and MCV, measurements of which are easy and inexpensive and require little blood, can suffice for the diagnosis of iron deficiency in patients with CCHD without altering systemic perfusion.

Abstract
This study evaluates the associations among the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and disruptive behavioral disorders (DBD) in the context of their relationships with reactive-proactive aggression and anxiety sensitivity in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The sample consisted of 342 treatment-naive children with ADHD. The severity of ADHD and DBD symptoms were assessed via parent- and teacher-rated inventories. Anxiety sensitivity, reactive-proactive aggression and severity of anxiety and depression symptoms of children were evaluated by self-report inventories. According to structural equation modeling, depression and anxiety scores had a relation with the DBD scores through reactive-proactive aggression. Results also showed a negative relation of the total scores of anxiety sensitivity on DBD scores, while conduct disorder scores had a positive relation with anxiety scores. This study suggests that examining the relations of reactive-proactive aggression and anxiety sensitivity with internalizing and externalizing disorders could be useful for understanding the link among these disorders in ADHD.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the psychiatric symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQL) of children with epilepsy and psychiatric symptoms of their mothers, and compared them to those of healthy children and their mothers. This study also explored the influence of the child-related and maternal psychiatric variables and seizure-specific factors on the HRQLs of children with epilepsy according to both the children's and parents' perspectives. METHOD Ninety-nine children with epilepsy (8 to 17years old), their mothers, and a control group (n=51) participated in this study. The depression and anxiety symptoms of the children were assessed using the Child Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), respectively. The severities of the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms were assessed via the mother-rated Turgay DSM-IV-Based Child and Adolescent Behavioral Disorders Screening and Rating Scale (T-DSM-IV-S). In addition, the mothers completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) to assess their depression and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Child-reported and parent-reported Pediatric Quality of Life Inventories were used to evaluate the HRQLs of the children. RESULTS The patients exhibited higher inattention and ODD scores than the controls did. With the exception of the child-reported physical health scores, all of the child- and parent-reported HRQL scores were significantly lower in the patient group. According to the regression analysis, the child-related psychiatric and seizure-specific factors, but not the maternal psychiatric factors, were associated with the child's HRQL. The explained variances for the overall HRQL and HRQL subscales were similar between the child-reported (0.373 to 0.654) and parent-reported (0.499 to 0.682) questionnaires. The largest contributors to the total variance were the child-related psychiatric factors for both the child-reported and parent-reported HRQLs by far. CONCLUSION Epilepsy is associated with a poor psychiatric status and HRQL in childhood. The impact of epilepsy on the HRQL occurs mainly through child-related psychiatric factors. Both the child-reported and parent-reported questionnaires seem to be useful for the evaluation of the HRQL in pediatric epilepsy cases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the most common etiologic reason for upper airway obstruction in childhood and has been found to be associated with a variety of psychiatric disorders and poor quality of life. In the present study, we investigated the impact of adenotonsillectomy on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, sleep problems, and quality of life in children with chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy. METHODS The parents of children with chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy filled out the Conners's Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short form (CPRS-RS), Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, Parent version (PedsQL-P) before and six months after adenotonsillectomy. RESULTS A total of 64 children were included in the study (mean age = 6.8 ± 2.4 years; boy:girl ratio= 1). The mean attention deficit hyperactivity disorder index and oppositionality subdomain scores of the CPRS-RS and all of the CSHQ subdomain scores (bedtime resistance, sleep-onset delay, sleep anxiety, night waking, parasomnias, sleep-disordered breathing, and daytime sleepiness) except for sleep duration significantly decreased after adenotonsillectomy ( p < 0.05). The PedsQL-P total score and both PedsQL-P physical health and psychosocial health subdomain scores were significantly higher at six months after adenotonsillectomy ( p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Child and adolescent psychiatrists should check the symptoms of chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy to identify children with chronic adenotonsillar hypertrophy who suffer from sleep disturbance, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, and oppositionality. Adenotonsillectomy seems to be beneficial for coexisting attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and sleep disorder symptoms and quality of life in these children.

Abstract
There is a need for a valid and reliable measurement tool that will detect the psychological symptoms of health care workers in the epidemic and pandemic periods that have been effective worldwide in recent years. This study has aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Stress and Anxiety to Viral Epidemics-9 items Scale (SAVE-9) in Turkish health care professionals. The study was carried out with 150 health care professionals. All participants were asked to complete the SAVE-9, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The Cronbach's α coefficient was calculated. Also, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to evaluate the factor structure. The SAVE-9 scores positively correlated with the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and negatively correlated with the BRS. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported two-factor structure similar to the original scale. The first factor consists of five items (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8), and the second factor consists of three items (6, 7, 9). The Cronbach's α coefficient was found as 0.77. The Turkish version of SAVE-9 is a valid and reliable tool for Turkish health care professionals.
