Abstract
There has been considerable speculation about the role of water and water complexes in chemical gas-phase reactions, including the conjecture that water may act as a molecular catalyst through its ability to form hydrogen bonds. Here, we present kinetic studies in which the effect of water on the rate of the reaction between hydroxyl radicals and acetaldehyde has been measured directly in Laval nozzle expansions at low temperatures. An increasing enhancement of the reaction rate by added water was found with decreasing temperatures between 300 and 60 kelvin. Quantum chemical calculations and statistical rate theory support our conclusions that this observation is due to the reduction of an intrinsic reaction barrier caused by specific water aggregation. The results suggest that even single water molecules can act as catalysts in radical-molecule reactions.

Abstract
In the central and peripheral nervous system of the crayfish, Orconectes limosus, neuropeptides immunoreactive to an antiserum against allatostatin I (= Dipstatin 7) of the cockroach Diploptera punctata have been detected by immunocytochemistry and a sensitive enzyme immunoassay. Abundant immunoreactivity occurs throughout the central nervous system in distinct interneurons and neurosecretory cells. The latter have terminals in well-known neurohemal organs, such as the sinus gland, the pericardial organs, and the perineural sheath of the ventral nerve cord. Nervous tissue extracts were separated by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and fractions were monitored in the enzyme immunoassay. Three of several immunopositive fractions have been purified and identified by mass spectroscopy and microsequencing as AGPYAFGL-NH2, SAGPYAFGL-NH2, and PRVYGFGL-NH2. The first peptide is identical to carcinustatin 8 previously identified in the crab Carcinus maenas. The others are novel and are designated orcostatin I and orcostatin II, respectively. All three peptides exert dramatic inhibitory effects on contractions of the crayfish hindgut. Carcinustatin 8 also inhibits induced contractions of the cockroach hindgut. Furthermore, this peptide reduces the cycle frequency of the pyloric rhythms generated by the stomatogastric nervous system of two decapod species in vitro. These crayfish allatostatin-like peptides are the first native crustacean peptides with demonstrated inhibitory actions on hindgut muscles and the pyloric rhythm of the stomatogastric ganglion.

Abstract
Since the pioneering work of Kai Siegbahn, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) has been developed into an indispensable analytical technique for surface science. The value of this powerful method of photoelectron spectroscopy (PES, also termed photoemission spectroscopy) and Siegbahn's contributions were recognized in the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics. The need for high vacuum, however, originally prohibited PES of volatile liquids, and only allowed for investigation of low-vapor-pressure molecules attached to a surface (or close to a surface) or liquid films of low volatility. Only with the invention of liquid beams of volatile liquids compatible with high-vacuum conditions was PES from liquid surfaces under vacuum made feasible. Because of the ubiquity of water interfaces in nature, the liquid water-vacuum interface became a most attractive research topic, particularly over the past 10 years. PES studies of these important aqueous interfaces remained significantly challenging because of the need to develop high-pressure PES methods. For decades, ESCA or PES (termed XPS, for X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in the case of soft X-ray photons) was restricted to conventional laboratory X-ray sources or beamlines in synchrotron facilities. This approach enabled frequency domain measurements, but with poor time resolution. Indirect access to time-resolved processes in the condensed phase was only achieved if line-widths could be analyzed or if processes could be related to a fast clock, that is, reference processes that are fast enough and are also well understood in the condensed phase. Just recently, the emergence of high harmonic light sources, providing short-wavelength radiation in ultrashort light pulses, added the dimension of time to the classical ESCA or XPS technique and opened the door to (soft) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with ultrahigh time resolution. The combination of high harmonic light sources (providing radiation with laserlike beam qualities) and liquid microjet technology recently enabled the first liquid interface PES experiments in the IR/UV-pump and extreme ultraviolet-probe (EUV-probe) configuration. In this Account, we highlight features of the technology and a number of recent applications, including extreme states of matter and the discovery and detection of short-lived transients of the solvated electron in water. Properties of the EUV radiation, such as its controllable polarization and features of the liquid microjet, will enable unique experiments in the near future. PES measures electron binding energies and angular distributions of photoelectrons, which comprise unique information about electron orbitals and their involvement in chemical bonding. One of the future goals is to use this information to trace molecular orbitals, over time, in chemical reactions or biological transformations.

Abstract
Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) plays a central role in the recruitment and activation of mononuclear cells in mycobacterial infection. In the absence of type 1 TNF receptor, Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) infection of mice is not contained, leading to fatal disease. Because type 1 TNF receptor binds both TNF and lymphotoxin-a, we used TNF-deficient mice to determine the specific role of TNF in the host resistance to BCG infection. The bacterial burden of the lungs of TNF-deficient mice was substantially increased and the mice succumbed to pneumonia between 8 and 12 weeks with a defective granuloma response. Atypical granulomas developed by 4 weeks expressing low levels of MHC class II, intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM-1), CD11b and CD11c. Macrophages showed little signs of activation and had low levels of acid phosphatase activity and inducible nitric oxide synthase (INOS) expression. Despite the defective cellular recruitment, the chemokines, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein-1 (MIP-1alpha), were increased in broncho-alveolar lavage fluid of TNF-deficient mice. The defective host response was corrected by the transplantation of normal bone marrow cells into irradiated TNF-deficient mice. These results demonstrate that TNF derived from hemopoietic cells rather than from mesenchymal origin are essential for a normal host response to BCG infection. Furthermore, TNF dependent expression of adhesion molecules may be essential for the recruitment of mononuclear cells for the formation of bactericidal BCG granulomas.

Abstract
The cancer community understands the value of blood profiling measurements in assessing and monitoring cancer. We describe an effort among academic, government, biotechnology, diagnostic, and pharmaceutical companies called the Blood Profiling Atlas in Cancer (BloodPAC) Project. BloodPAC will aggregate, make freely available, and harmonize for further analyses, raw datasets, relevant associated clinical data (e.g., clinical diagnosis, treatment history, and outcomes), and sample preparation and handling protocols to accelerate the development of blood profiling assays.

Abstract
Charge separation in condensed matter after strong impacts is a general and intriguing phenomenon in nature, which is often identified and described but not necessarily well understood in terms of a quantitative mechanistic picture. Here we show that charge separation naturally occurs if water droplets/clusters or ice particles with embedded charge carriers, e.g., ions, encounter a high energy impact with subsequent dispersion - even if the involved kinetic energy is significantly below the molecular ionization energy. We find that for low charge carrier concentrations (c < 0.01 mol L(-1)) a simple statistical Poisson model describes the charge distribution in the resulting molecular "fragments" or aggregates. At higher concentrations Coulomb interactions between the charge carriers become relevant, which we describe by a Monte Carlo approach. Our models are compared to experimental data for strong (laser) impacts on liquid micro beams and discussed for the charge generation in cluster-impact mass spectrometry on cosmic dust detectors where particle kinetic energies are below the plasma threshold. Taken together, a simple and intuitive but quantitative microscopic model is obtained, which may contribute to the understanding of a larger range of phenomena related to charge generation and separation in nature.

Abstract
In the present article a novel approach for rapid product screening of fast reactions in IR-laser-heated liquid microbeams in a vacuum is highlighted. From absorbed energies, a shock wave analysis, high-speed laser stroboscopy, and thermodynamic data of high-temperature water the enthalpy, temperature, density, pressure, and the reaction time window for the hot water filament could be characterized. The experimental conditions (30 kbar, 1750 K, density approximately 1 g/cm3) present during the lifetime of the filament (20-30 ns) were extreme and provided a unique environment for high-temperature water chemistry. For the probe of the reaction products liquid beam desorption mass spectrometry was employed. A decisive feature of the technique is that ionic species, as well as neutral products and intermediates may be detected (neutrals as protonated aggregates) via time-of-flight mass spectrometry without any additional ionization laser. After the explosive disintegration of the superheated beam, high-temperature water reactions are efficiently quenched via expansion and evaporative cooling. For first exploratory experiments for chemistry in ultrahigh-temperature, -pressure and -density water, we have chosen resorcinol as a benchmark system, simple enough and well studied in high-temperature water environments much below 1000 K. Contrary to oxidation reactions usually present under less extreme and dense supercritical conditions, we have observed hydration and little H-atom abstraction during the narrow time window of the experiment. Small amounts of radicals but no ionic intermediates other than simple proton adducts were detected. The experimental findings are discussed in terms of the energetic and dense environment and the small time window for reaction, and they provide firm evidence for additional thermal reaction channels in extreme molecular environments.

Abstract
Laser-induced fluorescence may be used to guide laser ablation of atherosclerotic lesions. This study was performed to evaluate arterial autofluorescence spectroscopy in vitro using a single XeCl excimer laser (308 nm) for simultaneous tissue ablation and fluorescence excitation. The laser beam was coupled to a 600-microns silica fiber transmitting 40-50 mJ/mm2 per pulse. The fluorescence radiation emanating retrogradely from the fiber was collected by a concave mirror spectroscopic analysis over a range of 321-657 nm. The arterial media (n = 26), lipid plaques (n = 26), and calcified lesions (n = 27) of aortic specimens from ten human cadavers were investigated in air, saline, and blood. Whereas the spectrum of calcified lesions changed with the surrounding optical medium, the other spectra remained constant. In air and blood, the spectra of arterial media, lipid plaques, and calcified lesions could be differentiated qualitatively and quantitatively (P < 0.0001). In saline, there was no clearcut spectroscopic difference between lipid plaques and calcified lesions. However, normal arterial media and atherosclerotic lesions (lipid plaques plus calcified lesions) could still be discriminated. Thus spectroscopy and plaque ablation can be combined using a single XeCl excimer laser. These encouraging results should stimulate further studies to determine the potential use of this approach to guide laser angioplasty in humans.
