Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of the triad of organochromium derivatives [Cr(C(6)Cl(5))(4)](n-) (n=0, 1, 2) are described. By treating [CrCl(3)(thf)(3)] with LiC(6)Cl(5) in 1:5 molar ratio, the salt [Li(thf)(4)][Cr(III)(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (1) was obtained as a violet solid in 57 % yield. Oxidation of 1 with [N(4-BrC(6)H(4))(3)][SbCl(6)] yielded the neutral complex [Cr(IV)(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (2) as a brown solid in 71 % yield. The arylation of [CrCl(2)(thf)] with LiC(6)Cl(5) under similar conditions as above gave [[Li(thf)(3)](2)(mu-Cl)](2)[Cr(II)(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (3) as an extremely air- and water-sensitive red solid in 47 % yield. The crystal and molecular structures of 1 and 3 have been established by X-ray diffraction methods. Complex 3 contains the unusual cation [[Li(thf)(3)](2)(mu-Cl)](+) with an almost linear Li-Cl-Li unit (174.2(6)degrees). All four C(6)Cl(5) groups are sigma-bonded to the Cr(II) center, which is located in a square-planar environment. The local geometry around the Cr(III) center in 1 is, in turn, pseudo-octahedral, since two of the C(6)Cl(5) groups act as standard sigma-bonded monodentate ligands, while the other two act as small-bite didentate ligands coordinated through both the ipso-C and one of the ortho-Cl atoms. Compounds 1-3 are paramagnetic with maximum spin multiplicity each (EPR and magnetization measurements).

Abstract
The arylation of [VCl3(thf)3] with LiR(Cl), where R(Cl) is a polychlorinated phenyl group [C6Cl5, 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl(tcp), or 2,6-dichlorophenyl (dcp)] gives four-coordinate, homoleptic organovanadium(III) derivatives with the formula [Li(thf)(4)][V(III)(R(Cl))(4)] (R(Cl) = C(6)Cl(5) (1), tcp (2), dcp (3)). The anion [V(III)(C6Cl5)4]- has an almost tetrahedral geometry, as observed in the solid-state structure of [NBu4][V(C6Cl5)4] (1') (X-ray diffraction). Compounds 1-3 are electrochemically related to the neutral organovanadium(IV) species [V(IV)(R(Cl))4] (R(Cl) = C6Cl5 (4), tcp (5), dcp (6)). The redox potentials of the V(IV)/V(III) semisystems in CH2Cl2 decrease with decreasing chlorination of the phenyl ring (E(1/2) = 0.84 (4/1), 0.42 (5/2), 0.25 V (6/3)). All the [V(IV)(R(Cl))4] derivatives involved in these redox couples could also be prepared and isolated by chemical methods. The arylation of [VCl(3)(thf)(3)] with LiC6F5 also gives a homoleptic organovanadium(III) compound, but with a different stoichiometry: [NBu4]2[V(III)(C6F5)5] (7). In this five-coordinate species, the C6F5 groups define a trigonal bipyramidal environment for the vanadium atom (X-ray diffraction). EPR spectra for the new organovanadium compounds 1-6 are also given and analysed in terms of an elongated tetrahedral structure with C(2v) local symmetry. It is suggested that the R(Cl) groups exert a protective effect towards the vanadium centre.

Abstract
Homoleptic derivatives of formula [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) (X = F, Cl) have been prepared and isolated for every first-row transition metal as well as for several of the heavier ones. The stoichiometry attained in each case (n ranging between 2 and 6) can be understood considering the tendency of a given metal ion to compensate its coordinative and electronic unsaturation, while not incurring severe interligand repulsive effects. The molecular structures associated with each stoichiometry seem, in turn, to be governed by electronic rather than steric factors. Most of these [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) compounds are unsaturated, open-shell organometallic species, not fulfilling the 18-electron (or Effective Atomic Number) rule. This behaviour can be attributed to the absence of pi stabilising ligands (such as CO, phosphines, alkenes, alkynes, a variety of substituted aromatic rings, and so on) which are otherwise ubiquitous in organotransition-metal chemistry. The magnetic properties of the [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) species have been determined by EPR spectroscopy and/or bulk magnetisation measurements. Excellent correlation between molecular geometry and magnetic properties (whether diamagnetic or paramagnetic) has been observed. Many of these compounds undergo chemically- or electrochemically-induced electron exchange processes. These redox reactions proceed without alteration in the stoichiometry of the [M(C(6)X(5))(n)](z-) compound, but usually involve a sharp change in the molecular geometry according to the different electron configuration of the interrelated species.

Abstract
The reaction of [NBu(4)](2)[Ni(C(6)F(5))(4)] (1) with solutions of dry HCl(g) in Et(2)O results in the protonolysis of two Nibond;C(6)F(5) bonds giving [NBu(4)](2)[[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)](2)(mu-Cl)(2)] (2 a) together with the stoichiometrically required amount of C(6)F(5)H. Compound 2 a reacts with AgClO(4) in THF to give cis-[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)(thf)(2)] (3). Reacting 3 with phosphonium halides, [PPh(3)Me]X, gives dinuclear compounds [PPh(3)Me](2)[[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)](2)(mu-X)(2)] (X=Br (2 b) or I (2 c)). Solutions of compounds 2 in CH(2)Cl(2) at 0 degrees C do not react with excess CNtBu, but do react with CO (1 atm) to split the bridges and form a series of terminal Ni(II) carbonyl derivatives with general formula Qcis-[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)X(CO)] (4). The nu(CO) stretching frequencies of 4 in CH(2)Cl(2) solution decrease in the order Cl (2090 cm(-1))>Br (2084 cm(-1))>I (2073 cm(-1)). Compounds 4 revert to the parent dinuclear species 2 on increasing the temperature or under reduced CO pressure. [NBu(4)]cis-[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)Cl(CO)] (4 a) reacts with AgC(6)F(5) to give [NBu(4)][Ni(C(6)F(5))(3)(CO)] (5, nu(CO)(CH(2)Cl(2))=2070 cm(-1)). Compound 5 is also quantitatively formed ((19)F NMR spectroscopy) by 1:1 reaction of 1 with HCl(Et(2)O) in CO atmosphere. Complex 3 reacts with CO at -78 degrees C to give cis-[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)(CO)(2)] (6, nu(CO)(CH(2)Cl(2))=2156, 2130 cm(-1)), which easily decomposes by reductive elimination of C(6)F(5)bond;C(6)F(5). Compounds 3 and 6 both react with CNtBu to give trans-[Ni(C(6)F(5))(2)(CNtBu)(2)] (7). The solid-state structures of compounds 3, 4 b, 6, and 7 have been established by X-ray diffraction methods. Complexes 4-6 are rare examples of square-planar Ni(II) carbonyl derivatives.

Abstract
The trans isomer of the organogold(III) difluoride complex [PPh4 ][(CF3 )2 AuF2 ] has been obtained in a stereoselective way and in excellent yield by reaction of [PPh4 ][CF3 AuCF3 ] with XeF2 under mild conditions. The compound is both thermally stable and reactive. Thus, the fluoride ligands are stereospecifically replaced by any heavier halide or by cyanide, the cyanide affording [PPh4 ][trans-(CF3 )2 Au(CN)2 ]. The organogold fluoride complexes [CF3 AuFx ]- (x=1, 2, 3) have been experimentally detected to arise upon collision-induced dissociation of the [trans-(CF3 )2 AuF2 ]- anion in the gas phase. Their structures have been calculated by DFT methods. In the isomeric forms identified for the open-shell species [CF3 AuF2 ]- , the spin density residing on the metal center is found to strongly depend on the precise stereochemistry. Based on crystallographic evidence, it is concluded that Auiii and Agiii have similar covalent radii, at least in their most common square-planar geometry.

Abstract
The homoleptic silver(I) compound [PPh4 ][CF3 AgCF3 ] (1) provides a convenient entry to the homoleptic silver(III) derivative [PPh4 ][Ag(CF3 )4 ] (2). Once isolated as pure substances, these compounds exhibit marked thermal stabilities. Their structural and spectroscopic properties have been experimentally established. Moreover, their electronic structures have been calculated by theoretical methods. The electronic structure of the oxidized species [Ag(CF3 )4 ]- provides a new case of ligand-field inversion caused by the CF3 ligands.

Abstract
By reaction of [TiCl(3)(thf)(3)] with LiC(6)Cl(5), the homoleptic organotitanium(III) derivative [Li(thf)(4)][Ti(III)(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (1) has been prepared as a paramagnetic (d(1), S = 1/2, g(av) = 1.959(2)), extremely air-sensitive compound. Oxidation of 1 with [N(C(6)H(4)Br-4)(3)][SbCl(6)] gives the diamagnetic (d(0)) organotitanium(IV) species [Ti(IV)(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (2). Compounds 1 and 2 are also electrochemically related (E(1/2) = 0.05 V). The homoleptic, diamagnetic (d(10)) compounds [N(PPh(3))(2)][Tl(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (3) and [Sn(C(6)Cl(5))(4)] (4) have also been prepared. Nearly tetrahedral environments have been found for the d(0), d(10), and d(1) metal centers in the molecular structures of compounds 2-4 as well as in that of [Li(thf)(2)(OEt(2))(2)][Ti(III)(C(6)Cl(5))(4)].CH(2)Cl(2) (1') (X-ray diffraction). The reaction of the heavier Group 4 metal halides, MCl(4) (M = Zr, Hf) with LiC(6)Cl(5) in the presence of [NBu(4)]Br gives, in turn, the heteroleptic species [NBu(4)][M(C(6)Cl(5))(3)Cl(2)] (M = Zr (5), Hf (6)). Compounds 5 and 6 are isomorphous and isostructural, with the metal center in a trigonal-bipyramidal (TBPY-5) environment defined by two axial Cl ligands and three equatorial C(6)Cl(5) groups (X-ray diffraction). No redox features are observed for compounds 3-6 in CH(2)Cl(2) solution between -1.6 and +1.6 V.

Abstract
Homoleptic perhalophenyl derivatives of divalent nickel complexes with the general formula [NBu(4)](2)[Ni(II)(C(6)X(5))(4)] [X=F (1), Cl (2)] have been prepared by low-temperature treatment of the halo-complex precursor [NBu(4)](2)[NiBr(4)] with the corresponding organolithium reagent LiC(6)X(5). Compounds 1 and 2 are electrochemically related by reversible one-electron exchange processes with the corresponding organometallate(III) compounds [NBu(4)][Ni(III)(C(6)X(5))(4)] [X=F (3), Cl (4)]. The potentials of the [Ni(III)(C(6)X(5))(4)](-)/[Ni(II)(C(6)X(5))(4)](2-) couples are +0.07 and -0.11 V for X=F or Cl, respectively. Compounds 3 and 4 have also been prepared and isolated in good yield by chemical oxidation of 1 or 2 with bromine or the amminium salt [N(C(6)H(4)Br-4)(3)][SbCl(6)]. The [Ni(III)(C(6)X(5))(4)](-) species have SP-4 structures in the salts 3 and 4, as established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The [Ni(II)(C(6)F(5))(4)](2-) ion in the parent compound 1 has also been found to exhibit a rather similar SP-4 structure. According to their SP-4 geometry, the Ni(III) compounds (d(7)) behave as S=1/2 systems both at microscopic (EPR) and macroscopic levels (ac and dc magnetization measurements). The spin Hamiltonian parameters obtained from the analysis of the magnetic behavior of 3 and 4 within the framework of ligand field theory show that the unpaired electron is centered mainly on the metal atom, with >97 % estimated d(z(2) ) contribution. Thermal decomposition of 3 and 4 proceeds with formation of the corresponding C(6)X(5)--C(6)X(5) coupling compounds.
