Chemistry of single-walled carbon nanotubes

In this Account we highlight the experimental evidence in favor of our view that carbon nanotubes should be considered as a new macromolecular form of carbon with unique properties and with great potential for practical applications. We show that carbon nanotubes may take on properties that are normally associated with molecular species, such as solubility in organic solvents, solution-based chemical transformations, chromatography, and spectroscopy. It is already clear that the nascent field of nanotube chemistry will rival that of the fullerenes.

Surface-directed liquid flow inside microchannels

Self-assembled monolayer chemistry was used in combination with either multistream laminar flow or photolithography to pattern surface free energies inside microchannel networks. Aqueous liquids introduced into these patterned channels are confined to the hydrophilic pathways, provided the pressure is maintained below a critical value. The maximum pressure is determined by the surface free energy of the liquid, the advancing contact angle of the liquid on the hydrophobic regions, and the channel depth. Surface-directed liquid flow was used to create pressure-sensitive switches inside channel networks. The ability to confine liquid flow inside microchannels with only two physical walls is expected to be useful in applications where a large gas-liquid interface is critical, as demonstrated here by a gas-liquid reaction.

Comparative analyses of multi-species sequences from targeted genomic regions

The systematic comparison of genomic sequences from different organisms represents a central focus of contemporary genome analysis. Comparative analyses of vertebrate sequences can identify coding and conserved non-coding regions, including regulatory elements, and provide insight into the forces that have rendered modern-day genomes. As a complement to whole-genome sequencing efforts, we are sequencing and comparing targeted genomic regions in multiple, evolutionarily diverse vertebrates. Here we report the generation and analysis of over 12 megabases (Mb) of sequence from 12 species, all derived from the genomic region orthologous to a segment of about 1.8 Mb on human chromosome 7 containing ten genes, including the gene mutated in cystic fibrosis. These sequences show conservation reflecting both functional constraints and the neutral mutational events that shaped this genomic region. In particular, we identify substantial numbers of conserved non-coding segments beyond those previously identified experimentally, most of which are not detectable by pair-wise sequence comparisons alone. Analysis of transposable element insertions highlights the variation in genome dynamics among these species and confirms the placement of rodents as a sister group to the primates.

Small pulmonary nodules: volumetrically determined growth rates based on CT evaluation

PURPOSE

To determine the accuracy of high-resolution computed tomographic (CT) volumetric measurements of small pulmonary nodules to assess growth and malignancy status.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) image extraction and isotropic resampling techniques was assessed by performing three experiments. The first experiment measured volumes in spherical synthetic nodules of two diameters (3.20 and 3.96 mm), the second measured deformable silicone synthetic nodules prior to and after their shape had been altered markedly, and the third measured nodules of various shapes and sizes. Three-dimensional techniques were used to assess growth in 13 patients for whom the final diagnosis was known and whose initial nodule diameters were less than 10 mm. By using the exponential growth model and the calculated nodule volume at two points in time, the doubling time for each subject was calculated.

RESULTS

The three synthetic nodule studies revealed that the volume could be measured accurately to within +/-3%. All five malignant nodules grew, and all had doubling times less than 177 days. Some malignant nodules had asymmetric patterns of growth identified by using the 3D techniques but not the two-dimensional methods. All eight benign nodules had doubling times of 396 days or greater or showed a decrease in volume.

CONCLUSION

CT volumetric measurements are highly accurate for determining volume and are useful in assessing growth of small nodules and calculating their doubling times.

Requirement of MADS domain transcription factor D-MEF2 for muscle formation in Drosophila

Members of the myocyte enhancer binding factor-2 (MEF2) family of MADS (MCM1, agamous, deficiens, and serum response factor) box transcription factors are expressed in the skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle lineages of vertebrate and Drosophila embryos. These factors bind an adenine-thymidine-rich DNA sequence associated with muscle-specific genes. The function of MEF2 was determined by generating a loss-of-function of the single mef2 gene in Drosophila (D-mef2). In loss-of-function embryos, somatic, cardiac, and visceral muscle cells did not differentiate, but myoblasts were normally specified and positioned. These results demonstrate that different muscle cell types share a common myogenic differentiation program controlled by MEF2.

Studies on protective mechanisms of four components of green tea polyphenols against lipid peroxidation in synaptosomes

The comparison of the protective effects of four components of "green tea polyphenols' (GTP) - (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, EGCG; (-)-epicatechin gallate, ECG; (-)epigallocatechin, EGC; and (-)epicatechin, EC - against iron-induced lipid peroxidation in synaptosomes showed that: (1) the inhibitory effects of those compounds on TBA reactive materials from lipid peroxidation decreased in the order of EGCG > ECG > EGC > EC; (2) the scavenging effects of those compounds on lipid free radicals produced by lipid peroxidation could be classified as follows: ECG > EGCG > EC > EGC. Furthermore, we investigated the iron-chelating activity and the free radical scavenging activity of those compounds as their protective mechanisms against lipid peroxidation in synaptosomes. As for the iron-chelating activity, the ratio of EGC, EGCG, ECG or EC to iron(III) was 3:2, 2:1, 2:1 and 3:1, respectively. The hydroxyl radical (HO) scavenging activity of those compounds was investigated in a photolysis of the H2O2 system. It was found that their ability to scavenge hydroxyl radicals decreased in the order of ECG > EC > EGCG >> EGC. It was also found that they could scavenge lipid free radicals in the lecithin/lipoxidase system and their scavenging activity was classified as follows: ECG > EGCG >> EGC > EC. Moreover, we found that their antioxidant active positions were different from each other and the stability of the semiquinone free radicals produced by those compounds in NaOH solution decreased in the order of EGCG > ECG >> EC. The results indicated that the ability of those compounds to protect synaptosomes from the damage of lipid peroxidation initiated by Fe2+/Fe3+ was dependent not only on their iron-chelating activity and free-radical scavenging activity, but also on the stability of their semiquinone free radicals.

Participation of presenilin 2 in apoptosis: enhanced basal activity conferred by an Alzheimer mutation

Overexpression of the familial Alzheimer's disease gene Presenilin 2 (PS2) in nerve growth factor-differentiated PC12 cells increased apoptosis induced by trophic factor withdrawal or beta-amyloid. Transfection of antisense PS2 conferred protection against apoptosis induced by trophic withdrawal in nerve growth factor-differentiated or amyloid precursor protein-expressing PC12 cells. The apoptotic cell death induced by PS2 protein was sensitive to pertussis toxin, suggesting that heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins are involved. A PS2 mutation associated with familial Alzheimer's disease was found to generate a molecule with enhanced basal apoptotic activity. This gain of function might accelerate the process of neurodegeneration that occurs in Alzheimer's disease, leading to the earlier age of onset characteristic of familial Alzheimer's disease.

ESR study on the structure-antioxidant activity relationship of tea catechins and their epimers

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the free radical scavenging activities and the chemical structures of tea catechins ((-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) and (-)-epicatechin (EC)) and their corresponding epimers ((-)-gallocatechin gallate (GCG), (-)-gallocatechin (GC) and (+)-catechin ((+)-C)). With electron spin resonance (ESR) we investigated their scavenging effects on superoxide anions (O-.2) generated in the irradiated riboflavin system, singlet oxygen(1O2) generated in the photoradiation-hemoporphyrin system, the free radicals generated from 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane)hydrochloride (AAPH) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. The results showed that the scavenging effects of galloylated catechins (EGCG and GCG) on the four free radicals were stronger than those of nongalloylated catechins (EGC, GC, EC, (+)-C), and the scavenging effects of EGC and GC were stronger than those of EC and (+)-C. Thus, it is suggested that the presence of the gallate group at the 3 position plays the most important role in their free radical-scavenging abilities and an additional insertion of the hydroxyl group at the 5' position in the B ring also contributes to their scavenging activities. Moreover, the corresponding phenoxyl radicals formed after the reaction with O-.2 were trapped by DMPO and the ESR spectra of DMPO/phenoxyl radical adducts were observed (aN=15.6 G and aHbeta=21.5 G). No significant differences were found between the scavenging effects of the catechins and their epimers when their concentrations were high. However, significant differences were observed at relatively low concentrations, and the lower their concentrations, the higher the differences. The scavenging abilities of GCG, GC and (+)-C were stronger than those of their corresponding epimers (EGCG, EGC and EC). The differences between their sterical structures played a more important role in their abilities to scavenge large free radicals, such as the free radicals generated from AAPH and the DPPH radical, than to scavenge small free radicals, such as O-.2 and 1O2, especially in the case with EGCG and GCG with more bulky steric hindrance.

An improved approach for construction of bacterial artificial chromosome libraries

Presented here are improved methodologies that enable the generation of highly redundant bacterial artificial chromosome/P1-derived artificial chromosome libraries, with larger and relatively uniform insert sizes. Improvements in vector preparation and enhanced ligation conditions reduce the number of background nonrecombinant clones. Preelectrophoresis of immobilized high-molecular-weight DNA removes inhibitors of the cloning process, while sizing DNA fragments twice within a single gel effectively eliminates small restriction fragments, thus increasing the average insert size of the clones. The size-fractionated DNA fragments are recovered by electroelution rather than the more common melting of gel slices with subsequent beta-agarase treatment. Concentration of the ligation products yields a 6- to 12-fold reduction in the number of electroporations required in preparing a library of desirable size. These improved methods have been applied to prepare PAC and BAC libraries from the human, murine, rat, canine, and baboon genomes with average insert sizes ranging between 160 and 235 kb.

Clinical characteristics with inflammation profiling of long COVID and association with 1-year recovery following hospitalisation in the UK: a prospective observational study

BACKGROUND

No effective pharmacological or non-pharmacological interventions exist for patients with long COVID. We aimed to describe recovery 1 year after hospital discharge for COVID-19, identify factors associated with patient-perceived recovery, and identify potential therapeutic targets by describing the underlying inflammatory profiles of the previously described recovery clusters at 5 months after hospital discharge.

METHODS

The Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 study (PHOSP-COVID) is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study recruiting adults (aged ≥18 years) discharged from hospital with COVID-19 across the UK. Recovery was assessed using patient-reported outcome measures, physical performance, and organ function at 5 months and 1 year after hospital discharge, and stratified by both patient-perceived recovery and recovery cluster. Hierarchical logistic regression modelling was performed for patient-perceived recovery at 1 year. Cluster analysis was done using the clustering large applications k-medoids approach using clinical outcomes at 5 months. Inflammatory protein profiling was analysed from plasma at the 5-month visit. This study is registered on the ISRCTN Registry, ISRCTN10980107, and recruitment is ongoing.

FINDINGS

2320 participants discharged from hospital between March 7, 2020, and April 18, 2021, were assessed at 5 months after discharge and 807 (32·7%) participants completed both the 5-month and 1-year visits. 279 (35·6%) of these 807 patients were women and 505 (64·4%) were men, with a mean age of 58·7 (SD 12·5) years, and 224 (27·8%) had received invasive mechanical ventilation (WHO class 7-9). The proportion of patients reporting full recovery was unchanged between 5 months (501 [25·5%] of 1965) and 1 year (232 [28·9%] of 804). Factors associated with being less likely to report full recovery at 1 year were female sex (odds ratio 0·68 [95% CI 0·46-0·99]), obesity (0·50 [0·34-0·74]) and invasive mechanical ventilation (0·42 [0·23-0·76]). Cluster analysis (n=1636) corroborated the previously reported four clusters: very severe, severe, moderate with cognitive impairment, and mild, relating to the severity of physical health, mental health, and cognitive impairment at 5 months. We found increased inflammatory mediators of tissue damage and repair in both the very severe and the moderate with cognitive impairment clusters compared with the mild cluster, including IL-6 concentration, which was increased in both comparisons (n=626 participants). We found a substantial deficit in median EQ-5D-5L utility index from before COVID-19 (retrospective assessment; 0·88 [IQR 0·74-1·00]), at 5 months (0·74 [0·64-0·88]) to 1 year (0·75 [0·62-0·88]), with minimal improvements across all outcome measures at 1 year after discharge in the whole cohort and within each of the four clusters.

INTERPRETATION

The sequelae of a hospital admission with COVID-19 were substantial 1 year after discharge across a range of health domains, with the minority in our cohort feeling fully recovered. Patient-perceived health-related quality of life was reduced at 1 year compared with before hospital admission. Systematic inflammation and obesity are potential treatable traits that warrant further investigation in clinical trials.

Characterization of root colonization profiles by a microcosm community of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi using 25S rDNA-targeted nested PCR

The aim of the present work was to study colonization patterns in roots by different arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi developing from a mixed community in soil. As different fungi cannot be distinguished with certainty in planta on the basis of fungal structures, taxon-discriminating molecular probes were developed. The 5' end of the large ribosomal subunit containing the variable domains D1 and D2 was amplified by PCR from Glomus mosseae (BEG12), G. intraradices (LPA8), Gigaspora rosea (BEG9) and Scutellospora castanea (BEG1) using newly designed eukaryote-specific primers. Sequences of the amplification products showed high interspecies variability and PCR taxon-discriminating primers were designed to distinguish between each of these four fungi. A nested PCR, using universal eukaryotic primers for the first amplification and taxon-discriminating primers for the second, was performed on individual trypan blue-stained mycorrhizal root fragments of onion and leek, and root colonization by four fungi inoculated together in a microcosm experiment was estimated. More than one fungus was detected in the majority of root fragments and all four fungi frequently co-existed within the same root fragment. Root colonization by G. mosseae and G. intraradices was similar from individual mixed inoculum, whilst the frequency of S. castanea and Gig. rosea increased in the presence of the two Glomus species, suggesting that synergistic interactions may exist between some arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Skin colonization by Staphylococcus aureus in patients with eczema and atopic dermatitis and relevant combined topical therapy: a double-blind multicentre randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Staphylococcus aureus has a peculiar ability to colonize the skin of patients with eczema and atopic dermatitis (AD), and is consistently found in eczematous skin lesions in these patients. A correlation between the severity of the eczema and colonization with S. aureus has been demonstrated, and it has been determined that bacterial colonization is an important factor aggravating skin lesions. Patients colonized with S. aureus have been treated with antibiotics in several open and double-blind placebo-controlled studies, with conflicting results.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the colonizing features of S. aureus in the lesional and nonlesional skin of patients with eczema and AD in China and to compare the therapeutic effect of mupirocin plus hydrocortisone butyrate with vehicle ointment plus hydrocortisone butyrate.

METHODS

A multicentre, double-blind randomized trial was conducted. Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) scores were evaluated before the start of the trial and on the 7th, 14th and 28th day of treatment. Swabs for bacterial isolation were taken from lesional skin before the start of the trial and on the 7th, 14th and 28th day of treatment, and from nonlesional skin only before the start of the trial. A combination topical therapy with mupirocin plus hydrocortisone butyrate ointment was used in the experimental group, with vehicle ointment plus hydrocortisone butyrate ointment as a control.

RESULTS

Of 327 patients enrolled in the study, 208 had eczema and 119 had AD. Bacteria were isolated from 70.2% of lesional and 32.7% of nonlesional skin samples from patients with eczema, of which S. aureus accounted for 47.3% and 27.9%, respectively. Bacteria were isolated from 74.8% of lesional and 34.5% of nonlesional skin samples from patients with AD, of which S. aureus accounted for 79.8% and 80.5%, respectively. The colonization density of S. aureus was markedly higher in lesional than in nonlesional skin, both in patients with eczema and with AD (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), and was positively correlated with lesion severity. Considering the EASI scores before and after treatment and the final effective rate, good therapeutic effects were obtained in both the combination experimental groups and the control groups (P < 0.01), and there were no differences in the global therapeutic effect between the two groups in patients with eczema and with AD (P > 0.05). However, in patients with eczema with a clinical score of > 8 or in patients with AD with a clinical score of > 7, the therapeutic effect in the experimental groups was superior to that in the control groups (P < 0.05) on the 7th day of treatment. There were no differences between the two groups on the 14th and 28th days of treatment (P > 0.05). Following the improvement of symptoms and signs of eczema and AD, the positive rates of bacteria and S. aureus were reduced on the 7th day of treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

This study confirmed that lesional skin of patients with eczema and AD was more frequently colonized with S. aureus than was nonlesional skin. The more severe the eczema, the higher the colonization rate of S. aureus, and S. aureus was also more often present in lesional and nonlesional skin in patients with AD than in those with eczema. Staphylococcus aureus infection is related to the pathogenesis of eczema and AD. An antibiotic-corticosteroid combination and corticosteroid alone both gave good therapeutic effect in eczema and in AD, and both reduced colonization by S. aureus. Early combined topical therapy is beneficial to patients with moderate to severe eczema and AD, and it is unnecessary to use antibiotics at later stages of disease or in mild eczema or AD.

A series of mutations in the D-MEF2 transcription factor reveal multiple functions in larval and adult myogenesis in Drosophila

The D-mef2 gene encodes a MADS domain transcription factor expressed in differentiated muscles and their precursors in the Drosophila embryo. Embryos deficient for D-MEF2 protein due to a deletion of upstream transcriptional control sequences fail to form muscle, suggesting that the gene is required for muscle cell differentiation. To directly demonstrate a role for D-mef2 in embryonic myogenesis, we isolated gene mutants containing EMS-induced point mutations, characterized the effects of these mutations on D-MEF2 protein stability and nuclear localization, and analyzed the resulting muscle phenotypes. Our results show that in the somatic muscle lineage, D-mef2 is required for both the formation and patterning of body wall muscle. In the absence of somatic myogenesis, there is extensive apoptosis among the myoblast cell population. In contrast, in the cardiac muscle lineage, morphogenesis of the dorsal vessel occurs normally but the three myosin subunit genes are not expressed. Mutant embryos also exhibit an abnormal midgut morphology, which correlates with the absence of alpha PS2 integrin gene expression and muscle-specific enhancer function, suggesting that D-mef2 regulates the inflated locus which encodes this integrin subunit. D-MEF2 is also expressed in adepithelial cells and rare D-mef2 transheterozygous mutant adults fail to fly, consistent with defects observed in the indirect flight muscles. These results demonstrate that the D-mef2 gene has multiple functions in myogenesis and tissue morphogenesis during Drosophila development.

Small pulmonary nodules: evaluation with repeat CT--preliminary experience

PURPOSE

To assess the use of early repeat computed tomography (CT) of solitary pulmonary nodules to determine nodule growth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors performed repeat CT of nodule phantoms to assess the accuracy of their measurement technique. They then used this technique to assess nodule growth (nine malignant, six benign) in 15 patients (nine men, six women; age range, 60-79 years; average age, 66 years) who underwent repeat CT as part of their routine clinical protocol. The final diagnosis was established with surgical resection or follow-up for more than 2 years after an indeterminate biopsy.

RESULTS

Results of phantom experiments revealed that the method used to determine area change is sensitive enough to help detect nodule growth if one pixel is added around the entire circumference of a nodule. With use of standard exponential growth curves and known tumor growth rates, malignant growth could be detected in vivo within 30 days. All 15 in vivo nodules were correctly classified with early repeat CT.

CONCLUSION

Preliminary experience with early repeat CT suggests that a single repeat CT scan obtained 30 days after the first scan can depict growth in most malignant tumors as small as 5 mm.

Involvement of cytokines in normal CNS development and neurological diseases: recent progress and perspectives

Cytokines have been recognized to play an important role both in normal development of the brain, when they act as neurotrophic factors, as well as following injury. While both the cytokines and their receptors are synthesized and expressed in the brain normally (albeit at low levels), it has become clear that elevated levels are associated with many neurological disorders. In this review, we have chosen to present the data for only a few of the cytokines, including interleukin-1beta, interleukin-3, interleukin-6, interferon-gamma, transforming growth factor-beta, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Data are presented that suggest roles they may play in human disorders, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and several psychiatric disorders. The results in human disease are compared with results obtained in a variety of transgenic animal models. The mouse models have very different disorders depending on whether a cytokine is overexpressed either peripherally or in either astrocytes or neurons. The potential significance of this to the understanding of human disease is discussed.

Distinct mechanisms control RNA polymerase II recruitment to a tissue-specific locus control region and a downstream promoter

Histone acetylation precedes activation of many genes. However, the establishment and consequences of long-range acetylation patterns are poorly understood. To define molecular determinants of the developmentally dynamic histone acetylation pattern of the beta-globin locus, we compared acetylation of the locus in MEL and CB3 erythroleukemia cells. CB3 cells lack the beta-globin locus control region (LCR) binding protein p45/NF-E2. We found that p45/NF-E2 was required for histone hyperacetylation at adult beta-globin promoters approximately 50 kilobases downstream of the LCR, but not at the LCR. Surprisingly, RNA polymerase II associated with the LCR in a p45/NF-E2-independent manner, while its recruitment to the promoter required p45/NF-E2. We propose that polymerase accesses the LCR and p45/NF-E2 induces long-range transfer of polymerase to the promoter, resulting in transcriptional activation.

Cloning full-length dengue type 4 viral DNA sequences: analysis of genes coding for structural proteins

DNA sequences (approximately 11,000 nucleotides) representing the full-length genome of the dengue virus type 4 were cloned. The sequence of the first 2,429 nucleotides at the 5' terminus which includes the coding region for the structural proteins is presented. The virion structural proteins are encoded in one long open reading frame specifying a polyprotein precursor which is apparently proteolytically cleaved by a mechanism resembling that proposed for expression of structural proteins of other flaviviruses such as yellow fever (YF) and West Nile (WN) viruses. The N terminus for each of the dengue virus structural proteins was tentatively assigned by homology alignment to the corresponding sequence of YF or WN virus. Comparison of sequence homology of structural proteins suggests that dengue virus is more closely related to WN virus than to YF virus or Murray Valley encephalitis virus. Finally, analysis of the extreme 5'- and 3'-terminal nucleotides of the dengue virus genome revealed sequences that may be involved in transcription, replication, and packaging of viral RNA.

The myogenic regulatory gene Mef2 is a direct target for transcriptional activation by Twist during Drosophila myogenesis

MEF2 is a MADS-box transcription factor required for muscle development in Drosophila. Here, we show that the bHLH transcription factor Twist directly regulates Mef2 expression in adult somatic muscle precursor cells via a 175-bp enhancer located 2245 bp upstream of the transcriptional start site. Within this element, a single evolutionarily conserved E box is essential for enhancer activity. Twist protein can bind to this E box to activate Mef2 transcription, and ectopic expression of twist results in ectopic activation of the wild-type 175-bp enhancer. By use of a temperature-sensitive mutant of twist, we show that activation of Mef2 transcription via this enhancer by Twist is required for normal adult muscle development, and reduction in Twist function results in phenotypes similar to those observed previously in Mef2 mutant adults. The 175-bp enhancer is also active in the embryonic mesoderm, indicating that this enhancer functions at multiple times during development, and its function is dependent on the same conserved E box. In embryos, a reduction in Twist function also strongly reduced Mef2 expression. These findings define a novel transcriptional pathway required for skeletal muscle development and identify Twist as an essential and direct regulator of Mef2 expression in the somatic mesoderm.

Chromatographic purification and properties of soluble single-walled carbon nanotubes

We report an improved chromatographic purification of soluble single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) using gel permeation chromatography. Three fractions are separated by gel permeation chromatography, and the first fraction contains 74% of the s-SWNTs as detected by atomic force microscopy and UV and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Preventive effect of Ginkgo biloba extract on apoptosis in rat cerebellar neuronal cells induced by hydroxyl radicals

The ability of oxidative stress to induce apoptosis, and the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb761) on this induction were studied in primary cultured rat cerebellar neuronal cells. Cells were exposed to hydroxyl radicals by treating them with 20-50 microM hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and 100 microM ferrous sulfate. Hydroxyl radical treatment fragmented the DNA in a manner typical of apoptosis cells, producing a ladder pattern of 200 base pair increments on 1% agarose gel electrophoresis. Pretreatment of cells with 100 micrograms/ml EGb reduced hydroxyl radical induced cells apoptosis (determined by flow cytometry) and DNA fragmentation. The results indicate that hydroxyl radicals induce apoptosis in rat cerebellar neuronal cells and this induction can be prevented by EGb.
