Abstract
Radioactive seed localization (RSL) provides a precise and efficient method for removing non-palpable breast lesions. It has proven to be a valuable addition to breast surgery, improving perioperative logistics and patient satisfaction. This retrospective review examines the lessons learned from a high-volume cancer center's RSL program after 10 years of practice and over 25 000 cases. We provide an updated model for assessing the patient's radiation dose from RSL seed implantation and demonstrate the safety of RSL to staff members. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of various aspects of presurgical evaluation, surgical techniques, post-surgical management, and regulatory compliance for a successful RSL program. Notably, the program has reduced radiation exposure for patients and medical staff.

Abstract
The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of the location and width of a single lead shield on the dose rate of staff and caregivers in a hospital room with an I-131 patient. The best orientation of the patient and caregiver relative to the shield was determined based on minimizing staff and caregiver radiation dose rates. Shielded and unshielded dose rates were simulated using a Monte Carlo computer simulation and validated using real-world ionisation chamber measurements. Based on a radiation transport analysis using an adult voxel phantom published by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, placing the shield near the caregiver yielded the lowest dose rates. However, this strategy reduced the dose rate in only a tiny area of the room. Furthermore, positioning the shield near the patient in the caudal direction provided a modest dose rate reduction while shielding a large room area. Finally, increased shield width was associated with decreasing dose rates, but only a four-fold dose-rate reduction was observed for standard width shields. The recommendations of this case study may be considered as potential candidate room configurations where radiation dose rates are minimized, however these findings must be weighed against additional clinical, safety, and comfort considerations.

Abstract
Enzyme-modified cheese (EMC) produced by enzyme hydrolysis is a natural, cost-effective, and flexible alternative to using natural cheese in industrial applications. The modification of cheese by enzymes can increase their benefits for consumer acceptance and health, and intensify the specific cheese flavor. We evaluated the properties of cheese with added protease (Ep) or lipase (El), including texture, sensory, organic acids, volatile compounds, and free amino acids. As results, the hardness and gumminess of the cheese reached their maximum values when the concentration of protease and lipase was 0.1% and 0.6%, respectively. Interestingly, the bitterness and astringency of the cheese was reduced. The highest scores for odor, taste, and overall acceptability were observed on 0.08% protease in Ep and 0.8% lipase in El. Compared with the anchor cheese, eight new compounds were produced after the addition of protease and nine new compounds were produced after the addition of lipase. Irrespective of the type of enzyme, the content of free amino acids decreased slightly with the increase in enzyme content. From the point of view of adding enzyme species, the free amino acids content of Ep was generally higher than that of El, and glutamic acid and proline contents were high. Acetic acid concentrations (aroma-active compounds) of enzyme-modified cheese using protease and lipase were 482-931 mg/100 g and 30-36 mg/100 g, respectively, which were significantly increased. According to the results obtained in this study, a cheese with higher sensorial and textural acceptability was obtained by adding the appropriate protease or lipase.

Abstract
There is a global interest in the novel consumption, nutritional trends, and the market of new prebiotic sources and their potential functional impacts. Commercially available nutritional supplements based on microalgae that are approved to be edible by FDA, like Arthrospira platensis (Cyanobacteria) and Chlorella vulgaris (Chlorophyta) become widely attractive. Microalgae are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and polyunsaturated fatty acids that have high bioactivity. Recently, scientists are studying the microalgae polysaccharides (PS) or their derivatives (as dietary fibers) for their potential action as a novel prebiotic source for functional foods. Besides, the microalgae prebiotic polysaccharides are used for medication due to their antioxidant, anticancer, and antihypertensive bioactivities. This review provides an overview of microalgae prebiotics and other macromolecules’ health benefits. The phytochemistry of various species as alternative future sources of novel polysaccharides were mentioned. The application as well as the production constraints and multidisciplinary approaches for evaluating microalgae phytochemistry were discussed. Additionally, the association between this potential of combining techniques like spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electrochemical analyses for microalgae sensation and analysis novelty compared to the chemical methods was emphasized.

Abstract
Caffeoylquinic acids are existed in many plant species with various biological and pharmacological activities. 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid are two isomers of caffeoylquinic acids, which may be degraded and transformed to their isomers in processing. The present paper found that the stability of 3- and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid had decreased with the increasing solution alkalinity. 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid was more stable than 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid at the same condition. During degradation, 3- and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid were partially converted to their isomers. Additionally, ultrasonic effects on the degradation and isomerization of 3- and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid at different pH were studied. Ultrasound facilitated the degradation and isomerization of these compounds. The degradation kinetics were described by the Weibull equation. The protective effect of ascorbic acid and epigallocatechin gallate were also explored. Ascorbic acid and epigallocatechin gallate could alleviate the degradation of 3- and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid under certain conditions.

Abstract
Rapid and accurate detection of pesticide residues in food matrices are of great significance to food safety. This study aimed to characterize the fingerprint peaks of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and to enhance its detection accuracy in food matrices by using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. Density functional theory was used to simulate molecular dynamics of 2,4-D peaks (1.35, 1.60, 2.37 and 3.00 THz). Four baseline correction methods, including asymmetric least squares smoothing (AsLS), adaptive iteratively reweighted penalized least squares (AirPLS), background correction (Backcor), baseline estimation and denoising with sparsity (BEADS) were compared and used to eliminate spectral baselines of Zizania latifolia (ZIZLA), rice and maize containing 2,4-D residues, from 0.1 to 4 THz. Based on the peak information of 1.35 THz, the detection limit and accuracy of 2,4-D residues in these food matrices were significantly improved after THz spectral baseline correction, providing a new feasibility for food safety and agricultural applications.

Abstract
This study established a validated analytical method for the first time on the determination of nitrofuran metabolites, including semicarbazide (SEM), 1-aminohydantoin (AHD), 3-amino-2-oxazolidinone (AOZ) and 3-amino-5-morpholinomethyl-2-oxazolinone (AMOZ) in gelatin Chinese medicine. A C18 column with the mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and 5 mmol/L ammonium acetate in water was used to separate these nitrofuran metabolites. The limit of detection of SEM, AHD, AOZ and AMOZ were found to be 0.2 µg/kg, 0.3 µg/kg, 0.2 µg/kg and 0.2 µg/kg, whereas their limit of quantification were 0.6 µg/kg, 0.8 µg/kg, 0.6 µg/kg and 0.5 µg/kg. These nitrofuran metabolites exhibited a good linear standard curve (regression coefficients above 0.99) with a concentration range of 2 µg/L to 100 µg/L. Regarding extraction procedure, gelatin Chinese medicine was pre-treated with pepsin and then extracted using 5% formic acid (v/v) in acetonitrile. The resultant extract was purified through dispersive solid phase extraction using 1000 mg anhydrous sodium sulfate, 300 mg octadecyl carbon silica gel sorbent absorbent and 500 mg ethylenediamine-N-propyl carbon silica gel absorbent, and then further purified on Oasis PRiME HLB cartridges. The matrix effect was effectively eliminated after the clean-up procedure as confirmed by comparing the ratio of standard curves prepared by standards dissolved in both matrix solvent and 5 mmol/L ammonium acetate in water: acetonitrile (95:5, v/v). The recoveries of these nitrofuran metabolites under the 1 µg/kg, 2 µg/kg and 10 µg/kg spiking levels were between 77.4% and 95.6%. These metabolites after the extraction were stable at 4 °C for 24 h. The validated method was used to analyze the residue level of these nitrofuran metabolites in 25 gelatin Chinese medicines. Results showed that only one Colla Corii Asini sample contained SEM (2.52 µg/kg) and AOZ (6.27 µg/kg), whereas one Testudinis Carapacis et Plastri sample had SEM (1.27 µg/kg) and AMOZ (9.53 µg/kg).

Abstract
Detection and characterization of interactions between crop plants and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is significant for the exploration of the mechanisms in plant pathology. The objective of this research is to estimate spectral characteristics of rapeseed leaves (Brassica napus L.) during treatment with different H2O2 concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0 mmol/L) by using Raman spectroscopy (RS) (800-1800 cm-1) and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) (400-1000 nm). Cluster analysis of RS and HSI data between the control and treated samples was conducted using kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), respectively. Characteristic Raman shifts at 1012, 1163, and 1530 cm-1 and hyperspectral featured wavelengths at 452, 558, 655, and 703 nm were selected for discriminating control and treated samples. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to demonstrate the significant difference in spectral signatures of samples, and results showed that 452 nm is promising to assess the control and treated samples at the p < 0.05 level. The featured Raman shifts and hyperspectral wavelengths were employed to establish least squares-support vector machine (LS-SVM) discriminative models. The approach of multiple-level data fusion of 1163 cm-1 combined with 452 nm produced the best recognize rate (RR) of 81.7% to detect the control and treated leaves than other models. Therefore, the results encouraged multiple sensor fusion to improve models for better model performance and to detect plant treatment situations with H2O2 solutions.

Abstract
Abstract
This study established a rapid and reliable method to determine chloramphenicol (CAP), thiamphenicol (TAP) and florfenicol (FF) residues in Chinese gelatin medicines. CAP, TAP and FF were extracted from medicine samples using 2% (v/v) ammonium hydroxide in acetonitrile. Trypsin was used to eliminate the matrix effect caused by protein components in gelatin medicines, whereas anhydrous sodium sulfate, C18-N and NH2-PSA adsorbents were applied to reduce matrix effect induced by other components. The analytical method of these drugs was optimized on ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS/MS) through the analysis of their standard linearity and regression. The optimized extraction and analytical method were validated in one Chinese gelatin medicine sample (Colla corii asini, E Jiao) with three fortification levels (2, 5 and 10 μg/kg), and the recoveries of these drug residues ranged of 87.6–102.7%. The limit of detection and quantification of CAP, TAP and FF in the sample were 0.2 and 0.5 μg/kg, 0.4 and 1.5 μg/kg, and 0.5 and 1.5 μg/kg, respectively. A total of 30 Chinese gelatin medicine samples were analyzed using the established method. No drug residues were found in these samples except for one Testudinis Carapacis et Plastri (1.67 μg/kg FF) and one turtle shell glue (2.55 μg/kg FF).

Abstract
Salted duck egg white, a major by-product of salted egg yolk production, is rich in nutrients. However, its high salinity limits its application in the food industry. In the present study, three haloduric bacterium strains (C1, C2, and C3) were isolated from Jinhua ham, and strain C1 exhibited higher ratio of the transparent circle diameter to the colony diameter (HC) and gelatin liquefaction. Strain C1 was further identified as a member of the genus Staphylococcus through gene sequencing and EzTaxon-e analyses. Salted duck egg white was fermented by strain C1, and the thermal stability, microstructure, amino acid composition, and γ-aminobutyric acid of the egg white were compared with egg white without fermentation. The fermented salted duck egg white had a significantly low salinity. Meanwhile, it increased its thermal stability compared with the control through losing an endotherm at around 85°C and forming a new endotherm peak starting at 91.8°C. Additionally, free amino acids and γ-aminobutyric acid were found only in the fermented salted duck egg white. These indicated that fermentation with salt-resistant strains could alter the structure of salted duck egg white and improve its nutritional quality.

Abstract
Sildenafil (SD) and its related compounds are the most common adulterants found in herbal preparations used as sexual enhancer or man’s virility products. However, the abuse of SD threatens human health such as through headache, back pain, rhinitis, etc. Therefore, it is important to accurately detect the presence of SD in alcoholic beverages. In this study, the Opto Trace Raman 202 (OTR 202) was used as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) active colloids to detect SD. The results demonstrated that the limit of detection (LOD) of SD was found to be as low as 0.1 mg/L. Moreover, 1235, 1401, 1530, and 1584 cm−1 could be qualitatively determined as SD characteristic peaks. In a practical application, SD in cocktail could be easily detected using SERS based on OTR 202. Also, there was a good linear correlation between the intensity of Raman peaks at 1235, 1401, 1530, and 1584 cm−1 and the logarithm of SD concentration in cocktail was in the range of 0.1–10 mg/L (0.9822 < R2 < 0.9860). The relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 12.7% and the recovery ranged from 93.0%–105.8%. Moreover, the original 500–1700 cm−1 SERS spectra were pretreated and the partial least squares (PLS) was applied to establish the prediction model between SERS spectra and SD content in cocktail and the highest determination coefficient (Rp2) reached 0.9856. In summary, the SD in cocktail could be rapidly and quantitatively determined by SERS, which was beneficial to provide a rapid and accurate scheme for the detection of SD in alcoholic beverages.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies indicate that the anti-hypoxia effects of Tibetan Turnip (Brassica rapa ssp. rapa) were closely related to its characteristic components being p-coumaric acid (CA) and p-coumaric acid‑β‑d‑glucopyranoside (CAG). Since CAG would be converted to CA in vivo, this study aims to further examine the efficacy and mechanism of CA against pulmonary edema induced by normobaric hypoxia. MAIN METHODS Male ICR mice were assigned to the normoxia group and several hypoxia groups, given sterile water, CA or dexamethasone orally, once daily for four consecutive days. One hour after the final gavage, mice in the above hypoxia groups were put into the normobaric hypoxia chamber (9.5% O2) for 24 h while mice in normoxia group remained outside the chamber. After hypoxia exposure, lung water content (LWC), pulmonary vascular permeability, the protein content of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), plasma total nitrate/nitrite (NOx) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) content, histological and ultra-microstructure analyses were performed. Expression of occludin was assayed by immunohistochemistry. KEY FINDINGS In a hypoxic environment of 9.5% O2, mice treated with 100 mg/kg body wt CA had significantly lower LWC and BALF protein content than mice in the hypoxia vehicle group. Meanwhile, mice in CA group showed intact lung blood-gas-barrier, increased levels of plasma total NO, decreased levels of plasma ET-1 and upregulation of occludin expression. SIGNIFICANCE CA exerts preventive effects against normobaric hypoxic pulmonary edema in mice, its mechanisms involved improving the integrity of the lung barrier, inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation.

Rapid Determination of Thiabendazole Pesticides in Rape by Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. SENSORS 2018; 18:s18041082. [PMID: 29617288 PMCID: PMC5948739 DOI: 10.3390/s18041082] [Citation(s) in RCA: 29] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/07/2018] [Revised: 03/29/2018] [Accepted: 04/02/2018] [Indexed: 01/12/2023]
Abstract
Thiabendazole is widely used in sclerotium blight, downy mildew and black rot prevention and treatment in rape. Accurate monitoring of thiabendazole pesticides in plants will prevent potential adverse effects to the Environment and human health. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive fingerprint with the advantages of simple operation, convenient portability and high detection efficiency. In this paper, a rapid determination method of thiabendazole pesticides in rape was conducted combining SERS with chemometric methods. The original SERS were pretreated and the partial least squares (PLS) was applied to establish the prediction model between SERS and thiabendazole pesticides in rape. As a result, the SERS enhancing effect based on silver Nano-substrate was better than that of gold Nano-substrate, where the detection limit of thiabendazole pesticides in rape could reach 0.1 mg/L. Moreover, 782, 1007 and 1576 cm−1 could be determined as thiabendazole pesticides Raman characteristic peaks in rape. The prediction effect of thiabendazole pesticides in rape was the best (Rp2 = 0.94, RMSEP = 3.17 mg/L) after the original spectra preprocessed with 1st-Derivative, and the linear relevance between thiabendazole pesticides concentration and Raman peak intensity at 782 cm−1 was the highest (R2 = 0.91). Furthermore, five rape samples with unknown thiabendazole pesticides concentration were used to verify the accuracy and reliability of this method. It was showed that prediction relative standard deviation was 0.70–9.85%, recovery rate was 94.71–118.92% and t value was −1.489. In conclusion, the thiabendazole pesticides in rape could be rapidly and accurately detected by SERS, which was beneficial to provide a rapid, accurate and reliable scheme for the detection of pesticides residues in agriculture products.

Abstract
This study investigated the feasibility of using hyperspectral imaging for determining banana color (L∗, a∗ and b∗) and firmness as well as classifying ripe and unripe samples. The hyperspectral images at wavelengths 380-1023nm were acquired. Partial least squares (PLS) models were built to predict color and firmness. Two-wavelength combination method λi-λjλi+λj,λi2-λj2λi2+λj2,λiλjandλi-λj was used to identify the effective wavelengths. Based on the selected wavelengths, PLS models obtained good results with the coefficient of determination in prediction (Rp2) of 0.795 for L∗, 0.972 for a∗, 0.773 for b∗ and 0.760 for firmness. The corresponding residual predictive deviation (RPD) values were 2.234, 6.098, 2.119 and 2.062, respectively. The classification results of ripe and unripe samples were excellent in two different principal components spaces (PC1+PC2 and PC1+PC3). It indicated hyperspectral imaging can be used to non-destructively determine banana color and firmness as well as classify ripe and unripe samples.

Abstract
We investigated the feasibility and potentiality of presymptomatic detection of tobacco disease using hyperspectral imaging, combined with the variable selection method and machine-learning classifiers. Images from healthy and TMV-infected leaves with 2, 4, and 6 days post infection were acquired by a pushbroom hyperspectral reflectance imaging system covering the spectral range of 380-1023 nm. Successive projections algorithm was evaluated for effective wavelengths (EWs) selection. Four texture features, including contrast, correlation, entropy, and homogeneity were extracted according to grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). Additionally, different machine-learning algorithms were developed and compared to detect and classify disease stages with EWs, texture features and data fusion respectively. The performance of chemometric models with data fusion manifested better results with classification accuracies of calibration and prediction all above 80% than those only using EWs or texture features; the accuracies were up to 95% employing back propagation neural network (BPNN), extreme learning machine (ELM), and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. Hence, hyperspectral imaging has the potential as a fast and non-invasive method to identify infected leaves in a short period of time (i.e. 48 h) in comparison to the reference images (5 days for visible symptoms of infection, 11 days for typical symptoms).

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Tibetan turnip (Brassica rapa L.), widely distributed in Tibet region, is an edible and medical plant with effects of "tonic and anti-hypoxia" "heat-clearing and detoxification" and "alleviating fatigue" according to traditional Tibetan medical books. AIM OF THE STUDY This research systematically studied the effects of Tibetan turnip on promoting hypoxia-tolerance in humans and the mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 7-d, self-control and single-blind human feeding trial was conducted among 27 healthy subjects with 8 males and 10 females in feeding group fed with 7.5g turnip powder 2 times daily while 4 males and 5 females in control group fed with 7.5g radish powder twice a day. Subjects were required to undergo a hypoxia tolerance test (7.1% O2) and a cardiopulmonary function evaluation (Bruce treadmill protocol) before (1st day) and after (9th day) the trial. Simultaneously, the anti-oxidative activities (SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, MDA), routine and biochemical analyses of blood samples were evaluated. RESULTS The females' SpO2 increased significantly by 6.4% at the end of the hypoxia tolerance test after taking turnips (p<0.05), and the hypoxia symptoms in most of the subjects were alleviated as well. The anaerobic threshold, peak O2 pulse and peak VO2/kg were significantly improved after 7-d turnip consumption during the Bruce treadmill test (p<0.05). As for the blood analysis, anti-oxidative activities were boosted effectively after the 7-d treatments. Moreover, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) in the males of feeding group increased significantly (p<0.05). However, little changes of all variables were observed in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Consumption of Tibetan turnips for 7 days likely contributed to the hypoxia tolerance in healthy humans, which could be due to its abilities of improving oxygen uptake and delivery, enhancing body antioxidant capacity and increasing MCHC. However, further studies with larger samples and double-blind design are warranted, and future studies covering more diverse populations (unhealthy, athletic) would be also considered. Moreover, researches on identifying Tibetan turnip's active compounds are desired as well.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the clinical characteristics of bone disease in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and the clinical significance of monitoring bone metabolic markers. METHODS The data of 178 MM cases newly diagnosed in Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital from January 2009 to June 2014 were reviewed to analysis the types and classification of bone disease and to observe the clinical characteristics of patients with different grades of bone disease. The levels of bone metabolic markers total procollagen type Ⅰ N-terminal peptide (tPINP) and β C-terminal telopeptide of type Ⅰ collagen (β-CTX) were monitored regularly in the two years following treatment in 66 cases. RESULTS (1) Among the 178 newly diagnosed MM cases, 167 cases complained of pain in bones on first visit, 35 cases combined with hypercalcemia, 83 cases combined with osteoporosis, 154 cases combined with osteolytic bone destruction, and 73 cases combined with pathologic fracture. The most common osteolytic location was the spine. The most common fracture sites was the spine. (2) According to bone disease grading, the 178 cases were divided into group A (bone grade 0-2, n=51) and group B(bone grade 3-4, n=127). There were no significant differences between group A and group B in gender, median age, therapeutic effect/ineffec, median overall survival, median progress-free survival, mean serum lactic dehydrogenase, mean albumin, urine light chains and serum creatinine(all P>0.05). Compared with group A, group B had lower hemoglobin level[(99.78±29.93)vs (108.84±29.30) g/L], and higher blood calcium level[(2.47±0.40)vs (2.30±0.29) mmol/L], serum β2-microglobuin level[(6.04±4.84)vs (4.12±3.97)mg/L], and bone marrow plasma cells percentage(33.30%±24.87% vs 23.51%±22.67%)(all P<0.05). (3) Before treatment, the levels of β-CTX and tPINP in patients of group B(n=47) were higher than those in group A(n=19)(median 0.78 vs 0.42 μg/L, 60.95 vs 43.47 μg/L, both P<0.05). The ratio of β-CTX /tPINP in group B was higher than that in group A (median 0.017 vs 0.012, P<0.05). After chemotherapy for 3 months, there were no differences in the level of tPINP compared with that before treatment in both group A and group B (both P>0.05), the level of β-CTX decreased significantly compared with that before treatment in both groups(median 0.16 vs 0.42 μg/L, 0.26 vs 0.78 μg/L, both P<0.05); the ratio of β-CTX /tPINP decreased significantly compared with that before treatment in both group A and in group B(median 0.008 vs 0.012, 0.011 vs 0.017, both P<0.05). There were no differences in the level of β-CTX, tPINP and β-CTX/tPINP ratio after treatment for 6 months, 1 year and 2 years compared with that after 3 months in both group A and group B (all P>0.05). (4)All patients were divided into two groups according to the therapeutic effect: effective group included patients who reach the effect of partial remission or better remission(n=48), while ineffective group included patients who did not reach the effect of partial remission(n=18). Before treatment there were no differences in the level of β-CTX, tPINP and β-CTX/tPINP ratio between the effective groupand the ineffective group (all P>0.05). After chemotherapy for 3 months, there were no differences in the level of tPINP compared with that before treatment in both effective group and ineffective group (all P>0.05), but the level of β-CTX decreased significantly compared with that before treatment both in effective group and ineffective group (median 0.24 vs 0.60 μg/L, 0.44 vs 0.95 μg/L, both P<0.05). The ratio of β-CTX /tPINP decreased significantly compared with that before treatment both in effective group and ineffective group (median 0.005 vs 0.012, 0.005 vs 0.011, both P<0.05). There were no differences in the level of β-CTX, tPINP and β-CTX/tPINP ratio after treatment for 6 months, 1 year and 2 years compared with that for 3 months both in effective group and ineffective group (all P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Pain in bones, osteolysis and pathological fracture are the most common clinical manifestations in myeloma-related bone disease. The severity of bone disease can reflect the tumor load, but may not affect the therapeutic effect and the overall survival. The bone metabolic markers tPINP and β-CTX can be used to evaluate the severity of myeloma-related bone disease at diagnosis and to monitor the effect of treatment for bone disease.

Abstract
We previously showed that TSC1 (a combination of transferrin and IGF-1) is a potent inductor of myelinogenesis in myelin deficient rats and in demyelinated adult mice. More recently, we demonstrated that regeneration of oligodendrocyte progenitors and myelin are possible with a single dose of TSC1 in a mouse model of Premature birth. Here, using the same mouse model of perinatal white matter damage due to glutamate excitotoxicity (GME), we tested the hypothesis that regeneration of endogenous nestin-expressing neural progenitors improves the outcome of prematurity. Treatments: N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), saline, NMDA+TSC1 together or NMDA followed byTSC1 3 days later, were stereotaxically delivered into the corpus callosum of P4 mouse pups. Fluorescence analysis showed an intense enrichment of nestin-expressing cells in groups injected with NMDA+TSC1 from which many were generated by proliferation. Moreover, when TSC1 was injected three days after the primary insult it was still able to reduce ventricular enlargement and extensively rescue nestin-expressing progenitors. Cells co-expressing the proliferation marker Ki67, CNPase and faint nestin label were more abundant in groups injected with MNDA+TSC1 at 35 days after injection. Stereological analysis showed that the number of nestin-expressing cells in the sub-ventricular zone correlated inversely with the volume of the ventricle. A delayed administration of TSC1 after excitotoxicity reduced ventriculomegaly but not as much as, when NMDA and TSC1 were injected simultaneously. Thus, the earliest TSC1 was administered, the more tissue was rescued as shown by reduced ventriculomegaly. Astrocytes responded to GME by upregulating the expression of estrogen receptor and this expression was attenuated in the presence of TSC1 suggesting a decreased inflammation and a lesser need for estrogen-mediated central nervous system (CNS) neuroprotection.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the anatomical basis of intercostal nerve transfer to the suprascapular nerve and provide a case report. Thoracic walls of 30 embalmed human cadavers were used to investigate the anatomical feasibility for neurotization of the suprascapular nerve with intercostal nerves in brachial plexus root avulsions. We found that the 3rd and 4th intercostal nerves could be transferred to the suprascapular nerve without a nerve graft. Based on the anatomical study, the 3rd and 4th intercostal nerves were transferred to the suprascapular nerve via the deltopectoral approach in a 42-year-old man who had had C5-7 root avulsions and partial injury of C8, T1 of the right brachial plexus. Thirty-two months postoperatively, the patient gained 30° of shoulder abduction and 45° of external rotation. This procedure provided us with a reliable and convenient method for shoulder function reconstruction after brachial plexus root avulsion accompanied with spinal accessory nerve injury. It can also be used when the accessory nerve is intact but needs to be preserved for better shoulder stability or possible future trapezius transfer.

Abstract
Purpose The need of prophylactic central neck dissection (PCND) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is still controversial. The major restriction of PCND is the potential complications. We undertook a retrospective study to discuss its necessity in PTC patients. Methods A total of 188 patients with PTC who underwent total thyroidectomy and PCND were involved. In all of these, central lymph nodes were pathologic examined. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed based on tumor location and size, etc. Results Overall, node metastases were found in 44.1 % (83/188) of patients. Tumor size was the independent positive predictor for lymph node metastasis, while gender, age, tumor multifocality, tumor location, and capsular infiltration were not independent predictors of central lymph node metastases. Postoperative complications happened in 5.3 % (10/188) of patients, which 4.8 % (9/188) had temporary hypocalcemia and 0 % (0/188) had permanent hypocalcemia. Rates of temporary and permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve injury were 0.5 % (1/188) and 0 % (0/188), respectively. Conclusions PCND is recommended in all patients with PTC.

Abstract
ABSTRACTSmall-angle X-ray scattering is used to characterize the structure of aerogels prepared by two-stage polymerization processes. Second-stage catalysis controls the resistance to collapse during drying with the base-catalyzed system being most resistant. Base catalysis in the second stage leads to compaction of the polymer network on short length scales. This short-scale rigidity makes the networks sufficiently robust to withstand the surface tension forces present during solvent extraction and re-exposure to the atmosphere. Aging in solution also improves aerogel quality. In this case, a dissolution-repolymerization process leads to short length scale circuits and improved rigidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Surface disruption, either ulceration or fibrous cap rupture, has been identified as a key feature of the unstable atherosclerotic plaque. In this prospective observational study, we sought to determine the characteristics of the carotid lesion that predict the development of new surface disruption. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred eight asymptomatic individuals with 50%-79% carotid stenosis underwent carotid MR imaging at baseline and at 3 years. Multicontrast imaging criteria were used to determine the presence or absence of calcification, LRNC, intraplaque hemorrhage, and surface disruption. Volume measurements of plaque morphology and the LRNC and calcification, when present, were collected. RESULTS At baseline, 21.3% (23/108) of participants were identified with a surface disruption. After 3 years, 9 (10.6%) of the remaining 85 individuals without disruption at baseline developed a new surface disruption during follow-up. Among all baseline variables associated with new surface disruption during regression analysis, the proportion of wall volume occupied by the LRNC (percentage LRNC volume; OR per 5% increase, 2.6; 95% CI, 1.5-4.6) was the strongest classifier (AUC = 0.95) during ROC analysis. New surface disruption was associated with a significant increase in percentage LRNC volume (1.7 +/- 2.0% per year, P = .035). CONCLUSIONS This prospective investigation of asymptomatic individuals with 50%-79% stenosis provides compelling evidence that LRNC size may govern the risk of future surface disruption. Identification of carotid plaques in danger of developing new surface disruption may prove clinically valuable for preventing the transition from stable to unstable atherosclerotic disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize vascular lesions in SSc disease with high-resolution magnetic resonance angiography (Micro-MRA) of the finger. METHODS Eight SSc subjects and eight age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited for this study. Among the SSc subjects, the mean +/- s.d. age was 54.5 +/- 4.9 yrs, and the mean +/- s.d. duration of disease was 8.3 +/- 8.4 yrs. The numbers of SSc subjects that had telangiectasia, calcinosis and impaired finger flexion were 3, 2 and 3, respectively. The 2D time-of-flight micro-MRA was performed on a 3T clinical MRI scanner using a custom-designed finger coil with an in-plane resolution of 0.16 x 0.21 mm(2) and slice thickness of 1.2 mm. The data for the proper palmar digital artery lumen area, the number of visible dorsal digital veins and a semi-quantitative vascular score, which evaluates the overall integrity of digital vessels, were independently evaluated by two experienced reviewers who were blinded to the status of the subject. RESULTS Micro-MRA detected significant differences in the digital vasculature between SSc subjects and healthy volunteers. The SSc subjects had a significantly decreased digital artery lumen area (0.13 +/- 0.06 vs 0.53 +/- 0.26 mm(2), P < 0.001), a reduced number of digital veins (0.63 +/- 1.06 vs 3.13 +/- 0.99, P = 0.001) and a lowered overall vascular score (1.75 +/- 1.04 vs 3.5 +/- 0.53, P = 0.001). The study also found that both the digital artery lumen area (Pearson's; r = -0.72, P = 0.044) and vascular scores (Spearman's; rho = -0.75, P = 0.047) of the SSc subjects were inversely correlated with the duration of the disease. CONCLUSIONS Micro-MRA can be used to identify and quantitatively characterize the vascular disease in SSc fingers. The parameters derived from micro-MRA could potentially be used as prospective biomarkers for clinical evaluation.

Abstract
This paper reviews our recent experimental results that address the effects of solvent density inhomogeneities in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) on polymer thin film processing. The key phenomenon is excess sorption of CO(2) molecules into polymer thin films even when the bulk miscibility with CO(2) is very poor. We have found that the amount of the excess sorption is attributed to the large density fluctuations in scCO(2) near the critical point. Further, taking advantage of the vitrification process of polymer chains through quick evaporation of CO(2), we can preserve the "expanded" structures as they are. The resultant films have large degree of molecular-level porosity that is very useful in producing coatings with low dielectric constants, enhanced adhesion, and metallization properties. These characteristics can be achieved in an environmentally "green" manner, without organic solvents, and are not specific to any class of polymers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review computed tomography (CT) findings of histopathologically examined static bone cavities in order to determine whether an additional pathogenesis may play a role in this disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four patients with histopathologically examined static bone cavities were included in this retrospective study. Location, appearance of bone remodeling, tissue characteristics, and contrast enhancement of the cavity were assessed on CT images. CT findings were then compared with the histopathological findings. RESULTS Static bone cavity was found in the lingual molar region in three patients and in the lingual cuspid region of the mandible in one patient. Both fatty and soft tissues were present in the cavities of all four patients. Attenuation of the soft tissue in the cavities was found to be different from that of the submandibular gland. The soft tissue showed enhancement with contrast-enhanced CT in three patients. For all patients, the histopathologic content of the static bone cavity included fat, soft tissue, and abnormal vasculature. The thickened vein wall in the abnormal vasculature was observed. Aberrant tissue of the submandibular gland was not found in any of the static bone cavities. CONCLUSION Contrast enhancement of the soft tissue on the contrast-enhanced CT images suggests the presence of vasculature in the cavities. Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of fatty tissue and dilated abnormal vessels, and the absence of salivary gland tissue in the cavities. These findings show that vascular structures are prominent in tissues found in static bone cavities.
