The cutlery effect: do designed products for people with disabilities stigmatise them?

The purpose of this study was to investigate of how assistive cutlery design effects perception of the user. Studies regarding the usage and development of assistive cutlery have primarily focused on the ergonomics, whereas research into the aesthetics of assistive cutlery has been minimal. A method based on Canter's "Room Inference Protocol" from the field of environmental psychology was used to evaluate the aesthetics of the assistive cutlery. A series of images were digitally composited and a survey was deployed online, with an outcome of 562 usable responses. The results demonstrated that the female model with assistive cutlery was perceived to be less attractive, less stylish and less sporty in comparison with the male model that was utilising identical pieces of assistive cutlery. The research contributes to the existing literature in the field, complimenting the study by Torrens and Smith and validating the need for greater aesthetic consideration in addition to an ergonomically acceptable response for assistive cutlery. This in turn highlights the importance of industrial design for the context and adaptations of use, rather than just a design response given to the physical manifestation of a product. Implications for Rehabilitation Reduced grip can be not only physically debilitating but also socially isolating through stigmatisation. Current assistive cutlery may be ergonomically sound, but aesthetically lacking. Large, multinational study demonstrates significant gender effect relating to the perception of women using these devices.

Effects of smart garments on the well-being of athletes: a scoping review protocol

INTRODUCTION

With the advancements in wearable electronics, electronically integrated smart garments started to transpire in our daily lives. Smart garment technologies are incorporated into sportswear applications to enhance the well-being and performance of athletes. Smart garments applications in the sports sector are increasing, and the variety of smart garment applications available in the literature is overwhelming. Therefore, it is essential to compare the vast array of technologies incorporated in smart garments for athletes to understand the knowledge gaps for future studies. The protocol paper aims to examine the smart garments used in the sports domain to enhance the health and well-being of athletes.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

Relevant studies will be retrieved using predefined search terms from Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed and IEEE Xplore. The retrieved articles will be eliminated in two phases: title and abstract screening and full-text screening. The included articles will be primary studies published in the English language within the last 10 years. Subsequently, the included articles will be further studied to extract data using a data extraction form. The extracted data will undergo a thematic analysis. Also, quantitative analysis will be carried out using descriptive statistics.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

The results of this review will provide a comprehensive understanding of smart garment concepts used in the sports domain. The findings of this scoping review will be shared through a journal publication and a conference presentation. Ethical approval is not needed for this scoping review.

Industrial Design education in Australia: a competence analysis across primary, secondary and tertiary education levels

Industrial Design education is poorly understood by laypeople but is present in Australian curricula from primary through to tertiary education levels. Designers and design researchers have long recognised the value of the broad-ranging skills, knowledge fields, and personal qualities design education imparts, but this understanding is generally not shared by the wider community who may see design as surface decoration. This research identifies indicators of value and relevance taken from the twenty-first century competences literature, then measures their presence in four different Industrial Design education settings. Two studies were undertaken. First, Industrial Design educators from primary, secondary, and tertiary levels were surveyed. Then diverse Industrial Design education stakeholders from education and non-education settings were interviewed. The studies gathered both quantitative and qualitative data on the value and relevance of current Industrial Design education in Australia. The result is a comprehensive analysis of the twenty-first century competences present in Australian Industrial Design education, which concludes with recommendations for ways Industrial Design education can benefit twenty-first century learners, as well as ways it should evolve to remain relevant.
