Abstract
The combination of monocrystalline silicon's well-defined structure and the ability to prepare hydrogen-terminated surfaces (Si-H) easily and reproducibly has made this material a very attractive substrate for immobilizing functional molecules. The functionalization of Si-H using the covalent attachment of organic monolayers has received intense attention due to the numerous potential applications of controlled and robust organic/Si interfaces. Researchers have investigated these materials in diverse fields such as molecular electronics, chemistry, and bioanalytical chemistry. Applications include the preparation of surface insulators, the incorporation of chemical or biochemical functionality at interfaces for use in photovoltaic conversion, and the development of new chemical and biological sensing devices. Unlike those of gold, silicon's electronic properties are tunable, and researchers can directly integrate silicon-based devices within electronic circuitry. Moreover, the technological processes used for the micro- and nanopatterning of silicon are numerous and mature enough for producing highly miniaturized functional electronic components. In this Account, we describe a powerful approach that integrates redox-active molecules, such as ferrocene, onto silicon toward electrically addressable systems devoted to information storage or transfer. Ferrocene exhibits attractive electrochemical characteristics: fast electron-transfer rate, low oxidation potential, and two stable redox states (neutral ferrocene and oxidized ferrocenium). Accordingly, ferrocene-modified silicon surfaces could be used as charge storage components with the bound ferrocene center as the memory element. Upon application of a positive potential to silicon, ferrocene is oxidized to its corresponding ferrocenium form. This redox change is equivalent to the change of a bit of information from the "0" to "1" state. To erase the stored charge and return the device to its initial state, a low potential must be applied to reduce the whole generated ferrocenium. In this type of application, the electron is transferred from the ferrocene headgroups to the underlying conducting silicon surface by a tunneling process across the monolayer. To produce a stable and reproducible electrical response, this process must be efficient, fast, and reversible. The stability, charge density, and capacitance performances of high-quality ferrocene-terminated monolayers could compete with those of the existing semiconductor-based memory devices, such as dynamic random access memories, DRAMs. Moreover, we provide experimental evidence that a series of immobilized ferrocene centers can efficiently communicate via a lateral electron hopping process. Using these modified interfaces, we demonstrate that the thin redox-active monolayer can behave as a purely conducting material, highlighting an unprecedented very fast electron communication between immobilized redox groups. Perhaps more importantly, the surface coverage of ferrocene allows us to precisely control the rate of this process. Such characteristics are relevant not only for electrocatalytic reactions but also for widening the potential applications of these assemblies to novel molecular electronic devices (e.g. chemiresistors, chemically sensitive field-effect transistors (CHEMFETs)) and redox chemistry on insulating surfaces.

Abstract
Self-assembled ferrocene monolayers covalently bound to monocrystalline Si(111) surfaces have been prepared from the attachment of an amine-substituted ferrocene derivative to a pre-assembled acid-terminated alkyl monolayer using carbodiimide coupling. This derivatization strategy yielded nanometer-scale clean, densely packed monolayers, with the ferrocene units being more than 20 A from the semiconductor surface. The amount of immobilized electroactive units could be varied in the range 2 x 10(-11) to approximately 3.5 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) by diluting the ferrocene-terminated chains by inert n-decyl chains. The highest coverage obtained for the single-component monolayer corresponded to 0.25-0.27 bound ferrocene per surface silicon atom. The electrochemical characteristics of the mixed n-decyl/ferrocene-terminated monolayers were found to not depend significantly on the surface coverage of ferrocene units. The reversible one-electron wave of the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple was observed at E degrees ' = 0.50 +/- 0.01 V vs SCE, and the rate constant of electron transfer kapp was about 50 s(-1).

Abstract
The redox activity of a ferrocenyl monolayer grafted on an n-type Si111 substrate was investigated by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in conditions where the substrate plays the role of an insulator. This approach permits the differentiation between the different possible electron-transfer and mass-transport pathways occurring at the interface. As an exciting result, the thin ferrocenyl monolayer behaves like a purely conducting material, highlighting very fast electron communication between immobilized ferrocenyl headgroups in a 2D-like charge-transport mechanism.

Abstract
High-order harmonic generation in polyatomic molecules generally involves multiple channels of ionization. Their relative contribution can be strongly influenced by the presence of resonances, whose assignment remains a major challenge for high-harmonic spectroscopy. Here we present a multi-modal approach for the investigation of unaligned polyatomic molecules, using SF6 as an example. We combine methods from extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopy, above-threshold ionization and attosecond metrology. Fragment-resolved above-threshold ionization measurements reveal that strong-field ionization opens at least three channels. A shape resonance in one of them is found to dominate the signal in the 20-26 eV range. This resonance induces a phase jump in the harmonic emission, a switch in the polarization state and different dynamical responses to molecular vibrations. This study demonstrates a method for extending high-harmonic spectroscopy to polyatomic molecules, where complex attosecond dynamics are expected.

Abstract
H2 molecules were ionized by Ti:sapphire (45 fs, 800 nm) and Nd-doped yttrium aluminum garnet lasers (6 ns, 1064 nm). The relative populations of the vibrational levels of the H+2 ions were determined and found to be concentrated in the lowest vibrational levels. Tunneling ionization calculations with exact field-modified potential curves reproduce the experimental results. The reason for the departure from conventional Franck-Condon-like distributions is the rapid variation of the ionization rate with internuclear distance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was performed in order to provide a description of indications for induced elective terminations of pregnancy (ETOP), their characteristics (e.g. gestational age), and their evolution over time. DESIGN OF THE STUDY This is an epidemiological study. The geographic area covered is the French county of 'Isère', which represents a mean of 14 000 births per year over the study period. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data on ETOPs were collected actively from medical records by a register of childhood deficiencies and adverse perinatal events in this county. Between 1989 and 2000, 996 ETOPs were notified. RESULTS Four main grounds for ETOPs were identified: (1) morphological anomalies with normal karyotype (39%), (2) chromosomal anomalies (35%), (3) other fetal grounds (16%), and (4) maternal indications (10%). Prevalence rates for the first two grounds increased significantly over the study period respectively from 2.0 to 2.9 and from 1.4 to 2.7 per 1000. Among the ETOPs carried out because of fetal indications, the percentage of late ETOPs (from 24 weeks of gestation) was 34.6%, and remained stable over the studied period. In some cases, a medical consensus was not reached with respect to indications for termination (sex chromosome anomalies, limb defects). We estimated the percentage of these cases as being 2.7% of the figure for fetal indications, without any variation in prevalence over the whole period (p = 0.59). The increasing number of ETOPs that occurred in the chromosomal aberrations group during the study period is thought to be due to an increase in diagnostic sensitivity. The increase that occurred in the morphological anomalies group is thought to be due both to an increase in sensitivity and to a widening of the field with respect to indications, some of which have an uncertain prognosis (e.g. agenesis of the corpus callosum). CONCLUSION This study provides useful data for monitoring medical practice consistency within the field of prenatal diagnosis, and for the drive to keep medical practice within ethically acceptable limits.

Abstract
We perform high harmonic generation spectroscopy of aligned nitrogen molecules to characterize the attosecond dynamics of multielectron rearrangement during strong-field ionization. We use the spectrum and ellipticity of the harmonic light to reconstruct the relative phase between different ionization continua participating in the ionization, and thus determine the shape and location of the hole left in the molecule by strong-field ionization. Our interferometric technique uses transitions between the ionic states, induced by the laser field on the subcycle time scale.

Abstract
The in vitro effects of plant sterols were investigated with regard to their uptake and membrane lipid fluidity in human keratinocytes. Among the different media tested to transport sterols (liposomes, micelles and organic solvents), the best results in terms of incorporation and viability were obtained by the use of the organic solvents dimethylsulfoxide and ethanol. After 48 h incubation exogenous sterol can account for about 30% of the total cell sterol content. The total sterol amount in plasma membranes increased 2-fold after incubation with cholesterol, whereas it was not altered when phytosterols were incorporated. The incorporation of cholesterol, sitosterol and stigmasterol led to an increase in the percent of unsaturated fatty acid C18:1 in the plasma membrane. The effect of this uptake on membrane fluidity was studied by means of fluorescence polarisation using DPH and TMA-DPH as fluorescent probes. Whereas cholesterol and sitosterol had no significant effect on the DPH fluorescence anisotropy (rs), the presence of stigmasterol induced a 12% decrease of rs reflecting an increase in membrane fluidity. We can conclude from this study that in the presence of sitosterol, the mean fluidity of the membrane is regulated whereas stigmasterol triggers a looseness of molecular packing of phospholipids acyl chains, in accordance with previous results obtained on purely lipid model membranes.
