Abstract
The improvement of cryopreserved oocyte survival is imperative for the preservation of female fertility. In this study, we investigate whether P2Y2 receptors (P2Y2R) can be directly implicated in calcium (Ca2+) homeostasis misbalances observed during the cryopreservation process of cumulus oocyte complexes (COC). Firstly, RNA was extracted from bovine immature and mature oocytes and cumulus cells and real-time PCR performed to identify P2Y2R transcripts (experiment 1). Changes in intracellular calcium concentration [Ca2+]i of mature COC and oocytes (experiment 2) were measured upon exposure to cryoprotectants (CPA), UTP (P2Y2R stimulator, 100 μM), and/or suramin (P2Y2R inhibitor, 100 and 300 μM). The functional role of P2Y2R was investigated by analyzing the effect on oocyte viability of its modulation prior and during oocyte exposure to CPA (experiment 3). Mature COC were randomly divided into groups, and exposed to CPA and different P2Y2 modulators. Oocytes' viability, cortical granules location, and competence for development were assessed. Results showed that P2Y2R mRNAs are expressed in both oocytes and cumulus cells. Stimulation with UTP and CPA led to [Ca2+]i increase, and this effect was totally or partially blocked by suramin (P2Y2R inhibitor). Oocyte exposure to CPA and UTP reduced embryo rates compared with control and suramin100μM (P ≤ 0.04). The observed enhanced premature zona hardening in oocytes exposed to CPA (P = 0.04) and UTP (P = 0.005) stimulus was inhibited by suramin 100 μM. In conclusion, inhibition of P2Y2R during cryoprotectant exposure reduces premature intracellular Ca2+ release and significantly improves the developmental competence of exposed bovine oocytes.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the role of Doppel protein in the capacitation process and fertilising ability of both fresh and frozen–thawed (FT) spermatozoa from rams carrying different prion protein 2 (dublet) (PRND) gene polymorphisms. The detection efficacy of new anti-Doppel monoclonal antibodies and PRND mRNA quantification were also explored in ovine spermatozoa. Three different genotypes (AA, GA, GG) were identified for codon 26 of ovine PRND-c.78G>A. Using flow cytometry, a higher fluorescence was detected in fresh compared with FT sperm samples incubated with anti-Doppel primary and fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated secondary antibodies (P < 0.05). Capacitation was affected by semen treatment (fresh and FT) and male PRND genotype (P < 0.05). After IVF, the use of fresh semen resulted in a higher cleavage rate than the use of FT spermatozoa (P = 0.004). IVF using spermatozoa from individuals classified as carriers of the AA or GA PRND genotypes resulted in higher cleavage rates than seen using spermatozoa from GG carriers (P ≤ 0.0006). Finally, using semen from rams with the AA PRND genotype resulted in the highest Day 6 and Day 8 embryo rates (P ≤ 0.04). In conclusion, the results of the present study confirm that the identification of different PRND genotypes is important for studying the sperm capacitation process and for improving sperm cryoresistance and embryo production. Furthermore, the detection of Doppel in ejaculated ovine spermatozoa, along with its low expression after cryopreservation, strongly suggests an important physiological function of this protein in male fertility.

Abstract
The lower results in cryopreservation of in vitro-produced (IVP) sheep embryos, when compared to the in vivo derived, limits its use. Four groups of blastocyst (BL) were evaluated: fresh IVP (n = 3), fresh in vivo derived (n = 3), warmed IVP cryopreserved in open pulled straws (OPS, n = 3) and warmed in vivo derived cryopreserved in OPS (n = 3). Ultrastructural observation of processed fresh embryos showed a reduced number of microvilli and mitochondria in the IVP ones, as well as a lower number of mature mitochondria, that can be associated with deficient metabolism in IVP embryos, possibly involved in the lower resistance to cryopreservation. Both in vivo-derived and IVP embryos had a large number of vesicles, with light and dense content. In embryos vitrified by OPS, major changes were observed mainly in IVP embryos with small changes in grade 2 (fair) and high changes in grade 3 (bad) semithin scoring. The main changes associated with cryopreservation included disruption of cellular membranes and poor intracellular preservation, with loss of microvilli and the presence of cellular debris. In conclusion, ultrastructural evaluation of IVP blastocysts cryopreserved in OPS was herein described for the first time, reporting more severe cellular damage in these embryos when compared to those produced in vivo. This is probably associated with a lower cryotolerance that can be related to their lipid content and metabolism.

Avaliou-se a capacidade de ligação dos espermatozóides de carneiro ao ácido hialurónico (% HBS), no sémen fresco (FS) e refrigerado (CS) diluído com leite de vaca desnatado (CS-SM) e sémen refrigerado (CS-EY) ou e congelado (FTS-EY) diluído com um diluidor de tris-glicerol-gema de ovo. A % de HBS (espermatozóides móveis ligados/total de espermatozóides móveis) nos grupos FS e CS-SM foram semelhantes (73,6 % vs. 71,2 %), ambas significativamente superiores aos grupos CS-EY (25 %) e FTS-EY (29,7 %). A diferença entre os grupos CS-EY e FTS-EY não foi significativa. A percentagem de motilidade individual progressiva (IMS) mais baixa foi obtida no grupo FTS-EY (21,7 %), não havendo diferenças entre os grupos FS (63,3 %), CS-SM (55 %) e CS-EY (48,3 %). Abstract
The reproductive performance of dairy cows may be improved by feeding conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplements during early lactation. The mechanism of action of t10,c12 CLA is not clearly known. Our objective was to investigate the effect of t10,c12 CLA on oocyte maturation and lipid composition of cumulus oocyte complexes (COC). The developmental potential of oocytes incubated in in vitro maturation (IVM) medium supplemented with t10,c12 CLA to the blastocyst stage and embryo quality were also assessed. In experiment 1, abattoir-derived oocytes were matured in TCM199 + 10% serum supplemented with 100 μM t10,c12 CLA (t10,c12 CLA n = 672) or without it (control n = 672). Mature oocytes were either stained for chromatin configuration or inseminated and cultured for embryo development assessment. In experiment 2, COC and IVM culture media were subjected to fatty acid (FA) analysis prior and after maturation with t10,c12 CLA or without it (control). Total lipids and FA profiles in oocytes, cumulus cells and culture media were determined by gas chromatography. t10,c12 CLA supplementation to IVM medium improved (p = 0.05) embryo quality evaluated morphologically. This effect was associated with t10,c12 CLA presence (3.1 ± 0.7%, p = 0.04) and lower levels of arachidonic acid in FA profile of t10,c12 CLA mature oocytes (immature oocytes = 4.4 ± 1.9%, t10,c12 CLA mature oocytes = 1.0 ± 0.7%, p = 0.05). Differences in myristic and eicotrienoic acids, saturated and unsaturated FA concentrations between oocytes and cumulus cells were detected (p ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, the presence of t10,c12 CLA during maturation interfered on lipid metabolism improving bovine oocyte competence to develop into higher quality embryos.

Abstract
Haematological (WBC, RBC, Hgb and Hct) and genotoxicity (MNT) parameters, hepatic enzymatic activities (GST, GPx and GR), and a histopathological evaluation of liver, kidneys and gonads were assessed as general biomarkers of metal pollution in the shrew Crocidura russula inhabiting a pyrite mining area. Specimens exposed to metals presented a few significant alterations when compared with reference animals: GST activity decreased; micronuclei increased; and evident liver alterations related to metal exposure were observed. On the basis of all the parameters studied, age was an important factor that partly explained the observed variation, whereas sex was the least important factor. Significant correlations were also found between heavy metal concentrations and biomarkers evaluated, demonstrating the great influence of these metals in the metabolic alterations. To the best of our knowledge, these data constitute the first measurements of a battery of biomarkers in shrews from a mine site and are among the few available for insectivorous mammals.

Abstract
Bovine embryos cultured in serum-containing media abnormally accumulate lipids in the cytoplasm. This is well known to contribute to their higher susceptibility to cryopreservation and biopsied embryos are even further susceptible. We aimed to improve in vitro produced (IVP) embryos resistance to micromanipulation and cryopreservation by supplementing serum-containing media with trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10, c12 CLA). The effect of t10, c12 CLA on lipid deposition and embryonic development was also tested. After in vitro maturation and fertilization (IVF day=D0), zygotes were cultured on granulosa cells+M199+10% serum+100microM GSH supplemented with 100microM of t10, c12 CLA (CLA group, n=1394) or without supplementation (control group, n=1431). Samples of D7/D8 embryos were observed under Nomarsky microscopy for lipid droplets evaluation while others were biopsied and vitrified (group B-Control, n=24; group B-CLA, n=23). Non-biopsied embryos were also frozen (group NB-Control, n=49; group NB-CLA, n=45). Biopsied cells were used for embryo sex determination. Postwarming embryo survival and viability were determined at 0 and 24h of culture, respectively. Supplementation of t10, c12 CLA did not influence cleavage, embryo sex ratio, D7/D8 embryo rate or morphological quality. CLA embryos had higher number of small lipid droplets (P<or=0.003) and a smaller (P<0.001) fat embryo index being leaner (P=0.008) than control embryos. Embryo postwarming survival was higher in B-CLA than in B-control group (95.0+/-7.0% versus 62.5+/-7.9%; P<0.001). After 24h of culture, the viability (expansion rate) of biopsied embryos and nonbiopsied embryos, cultured with t10, c12 CLA was higher than control embryos (B-CLA=64.6+/-4.4% and B-control=27.5+/-2.5%, P=0.01; NB-CLA=86.0+/-3.5% and NB-Control=68.6+/-7.0%, P=0.05). Results showed that supplying t10, c12 CLA to serum-containing media decreases embryo cytoplasmic lipid deposition during in vitro culture and significantly improves resistance of IVP embryos to micromanipulation and cryopreservation.

Abstract
A positive association between P4 concentration and initial bovine embryo survival has been reported. The objective of this study was to establish two coculture systems as a model to study the influence of progesterone on the initial bovine embryo development. Granulosa cells (GC) or bovine oviduct epithelial cells (BOECs) were used at the base of embryo culture medium microdroplets (TCM199 and 10% of superovulated oestrus cow serum, (SOCS)) supplemented or not with progesterone (P4, 33.4 ng mL(-1)) and/or a progesterone receptor antagonist (onapristone, OP, 2.2x10(-5)M). Presumptive zygotes were transferred to monolayers after in vitro maturation and fertilization of bovine oocytes with thawed swim-up selected sperm. Embryo development was carried out according to the following groups: experiment 1, BOEC (n=378) and BOEC plus OP (n=325); experiment 2, GC (n=514); GC plus OP (n=509); BOEC (n=490); BOEC plus P4 (n=500); BOEC plus P4 and OP (n=502). Embryos were checked for cleavage at day 2 and for stage development between days 8 and 12 of culture. In experiment 1, no differences (P>0.05) were identified between BOEC and BOECOP groups for embryo rates of development, quality or developmental stages. Also in experiment 2, no differences were found in embryo rates of development, quality or developmental stages between embryos cultured under the two coculture systems when no supplementation was added. Embryo development rates were not affected by OP presence in GCOP group. However, P4 negatively affected Day 8 (D8) embryo development rates in BOEC system (BOECP4=16.8+/-2.6% vs. BOEC=23.7+/-1.7%, P=0.02). This negative effect was abolished when P4 antagonist (OP) was added to the culture medium. BOEC supplementation with P4 also induced a delay on embryo development at D8 as confirmed by a lower development score (BOECP4=3.0+/-1.4 vs. GC=3.4+/-0.1, GCOP=3.5+/-0.1, BOEC=3.4+/-0.1 and BOECP4OP=3.5+/-0.1; P<0.05). These results demonstrate that OP supplementation had no harmful effect on embryo development either in granulosa, where P4 is naturally synthesised, or in BOEC coculture systems. Also we can not confirm a direct association between high P4 concentrations and embryo survival during early stages, although P4 may influence early embryo development through different mechanisms mediated by the type of cells present.

Abstract
An excessive lipid content in embryo cells is a consequence of embryo culture in the presence of serum which is suggested to be responsible for their high susceptibility to cryopreservation. The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of supplementing serum-containing culture media with trans-10 cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (10t,12c CLA) on embryo lipid accumulation and its subsequent cryopreservation. Abattoir-derived oocytes were matured and fertilized in vitro (IVF=day 0). On day 1, presumptive zygotes (n=3390) were randomly placed in: (I) (MS), granulosa cell monolayer cultured with M199 and 10% serum; (II) (SCLA), granulosa cell monolayer cultured with M199, 10% serum and 100 microM 10t,12c CLA and (III) (SOF), modified synthetic oviduct fluid, where embryo culture proceeded for 8 days. Cleavage rates or D7/D8 embryo quality did not vary among treatments. D7/D8 embryo production rate was significantly (P<0.001) lower in SOF (17.9+/-1.6%) than in groups MS (29.8+/-2.5%) and SCLA (27.8+/-2.0%). After cytoplasmic lipid droplets observation under Nomarski microscopy, classified embryos were the leanest when cultured in SOF, intermediate in SCLA and the fattest in MS (P<0.02). Post-thawing intact blastocyst rates where significantly higher in the SCLA group (84.7+/-4.1%) than in SOCS (50.3+/-4.8%, P=0.0007) or SOF (65.3+/-6.9%, P=0.03) groups. Post-thawing re-expanding rates were significantly lower when embryos were cultured in MS (34.7+/-3.7%) than in SCLA (63.7+/-5.3%, P=0.0006) or SOF (49.0+/-4.6%, P=0.04). Moreover, re-expanding rates were lower (P=0.05) in SOF than in SCLA cultured embryos. These results clearly show that addition of CLA to serum-containing media reduced lipid accumulation during in vitro culture and significantly improved cryopreservation survival.

Abstract
The aim of this investigation was to characterize the pattern of cervical myoelectrical activity (EMG) in the sheep, during the periovulatory period, after synchronization of oestrus with progestagen and eCG. EMG was measured with a computerised modular system in five ewes previously fitted with a pair of monopolar Teflon needle electrodes in the muscle layers of the cervix. Each ewe was submitted to oestrus synchronization treatment with intravaginal progestagen sponge during 12 days, and the administration of 500 IU of eCG at the withdrawal of sponge. EMG was recorded in each animal during 19 h, starting 44 h after withdrawal of sponge. The number and duration of events were determined every hour during the experiment. Two distinct event durations were identified: one lasting less than 200 s and another lasting between 300 and 500 s. The two types of events analysed (less than 200 s and lasting between 300 and 500 s) had a similar pattern during the period of observation although they were not in synchrony. For events lasting less than 200 s, activity increased between 48 and 50 h after sponge withdrawal, with the peak of activity being observed between 51 and 53 h. For events of 300-500 s duration, the peak of activity was observed between 48 and 50h after sponge withdrawal and activity was maintained until 51-53 h. The increase in cervical motility observed in progestagen-eCG treated ewes is in keeping with the increase in cervical activity observed by others in natural cycling animals, and suggests that exogenous hormones used in synchronization protocols had no deleterious action on cervical motility during periovulatory period. The enhanced activity of cervical muscle layer found around the time of mating and/or AI suggests it may play an important role as a regulatory mechanism of sperm transport. Taking advantage of the cervical responsiveness to various drugs, experimental modulation of cervical activity could be used to facilitate cervical sperm transport and consequent improve of fertility after cervical AI.

Abstract
Time-dependent effects of lead (Pb) toxicity were studied in Algerian mice (Mus spretus) treated with Pb acetate via drinking water (1 g Pb acetate/L) for different periods of exposure (15, 45, and 90 d). End points included the determination of hepatic Pb concentration and the assessment of some morphophysiological, biochemical and cytogenetical parameters. A control group receiving distilled water was also monitored for comparative purposes. Hepatic Pb accumulation increased with the time of exposure and was significantly higher in treated mice when compared to controls. In association with significant body mass loss in Pb-exposed mice, for 15 and 45 d, a significant increase in the relative spleen mass was observed after 45 d of intoxication. Pb-exposed mice also showed significant decreases in red blood cells, hematocrit, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin. On the contrary, changes in plasma transferases (aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase) and hepatic superoxide dismutase activities did not reach statistical significance. A significant increase in the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic bone marrow erythrocytes was also found in the 90-d-exposed mice, compared to nontreated mice and the other exposed groups. Exposure to Pb acetate resulted also in a slight time-dependent decrease of the polychromatic-normochromatic ratio. These results support the concept that a long-term chronic exposure to Pb induced alterations upon some morphophysiological and genetic parameters in Algerian mice.

The bioenergetic strategies of house mice (Mus musculus domesticus) from the island of Porto Santo were investigated and compared with those of mice from mainland Portugal. Energy obtained from food ingestion was 18.2% lower in Porto Santo mice than in mainland mice (1.53 vs. 1.87 kJ/g/day). The same pattern was observed for metabolisable energy intake, which was 19.2% lower in island specimens (0.87 vs. 1.08 kJ/g/day for mainland specimens). Apparent digestibility was similar in both groups of mice. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) of Porto Santo individuals was low (1.16 ml O(2)/g/h), representing only 56% of the predicted value, based on body mass, while mainland individuals exhibited a BMR closer to the expected value, corresponding to 87% of the predicted value (1.80 ml O(2)/g/h). Thermoregulatory abilities within the range of 10-28 degrees C ambient temperature did not differ between island and mainland mice. Results suggest an adaptation of Porto Santo mice to the environmental aridity of the island of Porto Santo, leading to a conservative energetic strategy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The occurrence of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the region of the Paraiba valley and the Northern shore of the State of S. Paulo, Brazil, is studied by remote sensing satellite imagery and maps of the region. METHOD The places where infections might have occurred were plotted on a false color composition made up of Landsat TM-3, 4 and 5 band images, the relevant vegetation (shrubs and trees) has been identified and correlations were sought for those areas seen as areas of risk for the disease and the environmental characteristics and their changes. The maps made it possible to add to the composite image the creeks and the contours of the tops of the large number of hills found in that region. RESULTS An area is characterized which may prove to be a macro-habitat for vectors, reservoirs and etiological agents. The search for changes in the landscape and the evaluation of meteorological data has not yielded any possible additional risk factor. CONCLUSIONS There is full correlation among the areas considered to present risk of infection and the presence of creeks and relevant vegetation (shrubs and trees).

Abstract
The effects of a progesterone antagonist (onapristone) on heat synchronization, luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, ovulation, oocyte maturation and fertilization of superovulated ewes were studied. Its effects on in vitro bovine oocyte maturation and fertilization were also studied. Estrus synchronization and superovulation treatments were applied to 39 adult ewes using an intravaginal sponge with fluorgestone acetate for 9 days with injections of prostaglandin F2 alpha and pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin given 24 h before sponge withdrawal. The animals were randomly assigned to four different groups; T1 receiving only the synchrony treatment (n = 11); T2 ewes received two injections of onapristone (1 mg kg-1, i.v.) 12 h apart from 3 h after sponge withdrawal (n = 10); T3 ewes received two injections of progesterone 12 h apart from sponge withdrawal (n = 10); and, T4 ewes received both onapristone and progesterone as described (n = 8). Ewes were mated by a fertile male during estrus. Progesterone and LH were measured during the superovulation period in plasma samples taken every 4 h. Uterine flushings for ova recovery were performed at 5 days (n = 25), 48 h (n = 5) and 24 h (n = 5). Non-fertilized oocytes collected at 24 and 48 h were checked for meiosis resumption. The effects of two doses of onapristone (D1 and D2) on in vitro bovine oocyte maturation (control = 100, D1 = 100 and D2 = 100) and fertilization (control = 107, D1 = 40 and D2 = 75) were also studied. The percentage of animals showing heat signs was significantly lower in group T3 (50% vs. 100%). The onset of oestrus (27.6, 24.8, 68.8 and 25.5 h, respectively for T1, T2, T3 and T4) and an LH surge (32.3, 28.8, 76.5 and 30.5 h, respectively for T1, T2, T3 and T4) after sponge withdrawal were significantly delayed in group T3. There were no significant differences in the intervals between estrus and LH surge among groups (4.61 +/- 0.75 h). The response and ovulation rates until 40 h after sponge withdrawal (group T3 excluded) were similar among groups, but the fertilization rates were significantly lower in groups T2 and T4 when compared with T1 (2% and 3% vs. 41%, respectively; P < 0.001) due to sperm arrest in the cervix. Ova recovery rate decreased significantly from 24-48 h to 5 days and was not affected by treatments (76.9% vs. 37.1% respectively). Onapristone did not affect the resumption of meiosis. Fertilization of bovine oocytes in vitro decreased significantly only in group D2 when compared to control (48% vs. 62.6%, respectively). In conclusion, onapristone treatment during the preovulatory period did not interfere with normal synchronization of estrus, ovulation and oocyte maturation but severely compromised fertilization by arresting spermatozoa in the cervix.

Abstract
The areas in which american cutaneous leishmaniasis was reported in 1993 and 1994 for the region around the town of Lagoinha, S. Paulo, Brazil (Lat 23 degrees 05' S; Long 45 degrees 11w) were plotted on a TM-LANDSAT image. The false color composition of bands 3, 4 and 5 made it possible to identify the relevant vegetation (shrubs and trees) within the boundaries of those areas and in their proximity, where they were found at a distance of not more than about 250 meters from the perimeter of each area. The use of means capable of presenting a larger view of a geographical area made the advantages of remote satellite sensing as a tool for the study of this endemic disease clear.

Abstract
Aedes albopictus were reared in different containers: a tree hole, a bamboo stump and an auto tire. The total times from egg hatching to adult emergence were of 19.6, 27.3 and 37.5 days, respectively, according to the container. The first, second and third-instar larvae presented growth periods with highly similar durations. The fourth-instar larvae was longer than the others stages. The pupation time was longer than the fourth-instar larvae growth period. The temperature of the breeding sites studied, which was of 18 degrees C to 22 degrees C on average, was also taken into consideration. The mortality of the immature stages was analysed and compared as between the experimental groups; it was lower in the natural containers than in the discarded tire. The average wing length of adult females emerging from tree hole was significantly larger (p < 0.05) than that of those emerging from the tire.

Abstract
A comparative study of the efficiency of ovitraps and larval-traps was undertaken with a view to improving the entomological survey of vectors of Dengue and Yellow Fever-Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus-in S. Paulo State, Brazil. The region studied is infected only by Aedes albopictus, a species that keeps to wild habitats but colonizes artificial breeding grounds as well. The first part of the study was located in a periurban area of Tremembé county were 3 hollon trees, 23 ovitraps and 5 larval-traps were compared. The second part of these experiments took place in Lavrinhas county (Pinheiros district), where 20 ovitraps and 5 larval-traps were tested. The results showed that the ovitrap was more efficient than larval-traps and were positive even in the presence of natural breeding grounds. It was also observed un the evaluation of the results of "thermonebulization (fog)" that the ovitraps showed strong reduction in the average number of eggs, but this was not observed in the Breteau Index.

Larval, pupae and egg water extracts were tested for their influence on the oviposition behavior of Aedes (s) albopictus females. Significant (alpha = 0.05) attraction was exercised by larval and pupal extracts containing 1 larva/3 ml and 1 pupa/3 ml. Eggs water extract containing 1 egg/3 ml did not influence the oviposition.

Abstract
The objective of this study was the determination of extent of the spatial distribution of Aedes albopictus in the Paraíba River Valley, State S. Paulo, Brazil. Thus, collections of larvae and pupae mosquitoes were carried out at six sites distributed along a transection with a 10-km extension. The target was the tree-holes but artificial containers were also used in this investigation. Aedes terrens and Ae. albopictus were the only species of genus Aedes present in the tree-holes mentioned. The segregation of seven species of the tree-hole community was undertaken in the light of macrohabitat and microhabitat features. Thus, the distribution of Ae. albopictus was found to cover the rural, rural-urban and urban zones, but the rural-urban held the preference. Ae. albopictus never present in the residual and primary forest. The favorable factor to infestation with Ae. albopictus in the Paraíba Valley seems to have been the large number of natural niches made vacant by human influence. The rain has been important in the production of larvae and pupae, but the rainfall period does not coincide with the maximum production on them. The tree-holes whose volume exceeded 600 ml were the most productive breeding places. The abundance of these two stages occurs in the summer and autumn. However, the highest peak was observed in the months of March and April. These seasonal variations were found to be common in both the bamboo trap and the artificial container. The temperature data suggest a limit of from 17 to 23 degrees C for the best development of larvae. In the light of this, the strain of Ae. albopictus studied seems to have originated in tropical Asia. Just as happened with Ae. aegypti it may become an important epidemiological vector for the dengue fever and provide links for yellow fever transmission in Brazil.

Abstract
This study reports the finding of Biomphalaria tenagophila naturally aestived in two municipalities of the State of S. Paulo (Brazil): Ubatuba and Conchas. This ethological characteristic was discovered in 15 specimens collected in Ubatuba, and in 6 specimens collected in Conchas. The snails aestived showed vitality after being placed in water.
