Controlled growth mechanism of poly (3-hexylthiophene) nanowires

Synthesis of 1D-polymer nanowires by a self-assembly method using marginal solvents is an attractive technique. While the formation mechanism is poorly understood, this method is essential in order to control the growth of nanowires. Here we visualized the time-dependent assembly of poly (3-hexyl-thiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) nanowires by atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. The assembly of P3HT nanowires was carried out at room temperature by mixing cyclohexanone (CHN), as a poor solvent, with polymer solution in 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB). Both π-π stacking and planarization, obtained at the mix volume ratio of P3HT (in DCB):CHN (10:7), were considered during the investigation. We find that the length of nanowires was determined by the ordering of polymers in the polymer repetition direction. Additionally, our density functional theory calculations revealed that the presence of DCB and CHN molecules that stabilize the structural distortions due to tail group of polymers was essential for the core-wire formation.

Partial trisomy 1(q25qter) due to a de novo unbalanced 1;19 translocation in a neonate

We describe a male neonate with a duplication of 1(q25qter) due to de novo unbalanced translocation (1;19)(q25;pter). He had macrocephaly, wide sutures and wide anterior fontanelle, bilateral temporoparietal bossing, downward slanting palpebral fissures, low set, posteriorly rotated ears, downturned mouth corners, thin upper lip, retrognathia, high arched palate, triangular face, widely spaced nipples, bilateral single transverse palmar creases, bilateral partial syndactyly between second and third toes, ventricular dilatation, corpus callosum hypoplasia, and cavum septi pellucidi and cavum vergae, ventricular and atrial septal defects.

Partial trisomy 4(q31qter) due to maternal 4;5 balanced translocation in a neonate

We describe a male neonate with a duplication of 4(q31.3qter) due to unbalanced segregation of a maternal translocation (4;5)(31.3;p15.1). He has a high broad nasal bridge, large, low-set ears, epicanthal folds, long philtrum, retrognathia, high arched palate, wide-spaced nipples, bilateral single transverse palmar creases, bilateral clinodactyly of the fifth finger, right cryptorchidism, and ventricular and secundum type atrial septal defect.

Waardenburg syndrome in the Turkish deaf population

Waardenburg Syndrome (WS) is an autosomal, dominantly inherited disorder that accounts for more than 2% cases of congenital deafness. The aim of this study is to determine the WS incidence among deaf pupils. Dysmorphological examination was performed on 720 children who were attending 7 special schools in Turkey and who had hearing disabilities. All subjects in the study were examined for WS diagnostic criteria. We detected 49 patients (6.8%) with WS among the 720 children examined. Six patients had WS type 1 (12.2%) and 43 had type 2 (87.8%). We observed 2 to 5 major diagnostic criteria for WS. Out of all the subjects in the study, only two patients have deaf first degree relatives. All subjects had been previously examined by physicians for deafness but none of them had been then diagnosed to have Waardenburg Syndrome. Instead, they were all misdiagnosed as to have nonsyndromic deafness. Awareness of WS diagnostic criteria by the physicans will provide accurate diagnosis for many deaf pupils and their first degree relatives who are able-to-hear WS patients and whose children are at risk for deafness.
