Abstract
Research on exposure to television and movie violence suggests that playing violent video games will increase aggressive behavior. A metaanalytic review of the video-game research literature reveals that violent video games increase aggressive behavior in children and young adults. Experimental and nonexperimental studies with males and females in laboratory and field settings support this conclusion. Analyses also reveal that exposure to violent video games increases physiological arousal and aggression-related thoughts and feelings. Playing violent video games also decreases prosocial behavior.

The relation was stronger for individuals who are characteristically aggressive and for men. Academic achievement was negatively related to overall amount of time spent playing video games. In Study 2, laboratory exposure to a graphically violent video game increased aggressive thoughts and behavior. In both studies, men had a more hostile view of the world than did women. The results from both studies are consistent with the General Affective Aggression Model, which predicts that exposure to violent video games will increase aggressive behavior in both the short term (e.g., laboratory aggression) and the long term (e.g., delinquency).

Abstract
Fifty years of news coverage on the link between media violence and aggression have left the U.S. public confused. Typical news articles pit researchers and child advocates against entertainment industry representatives, frequently giving equal weight to the arguments of both sides. A comparison of news reports and scientific knowledge about media effects reveals a disturbing discontinuity: Over the past 50 years, the average news report has changed from claims of a weak link to a moderate link and then back to a weak link between media violence and aggression. However, since 1975, the scientific confidence and statistical magnitude of this link have been clearly positive and have consistently increased over time. Reasons for this discontinuity between news reports and the actual state of scientific knowledge include the vested interests of the news, a misapplied fairness doctrine in news reporting, and the failure of the research community to effectively argue the scientific case.

Abstract
Psychologists have often categorized human aggression as hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is "hot," impulsive behavior that is motivated by a desire to hurt someone; instrumental aggression is "cold," premeditated behavior used as a means to some other end. This dichotomy was useful to the early development of aggression theories and continues to capture important features of nonhuman aggression, but it has outlived its usefulness as a descriptor of fundamentally different kinds of human aggression. It is confounded with the automatic-controlled information-processing dichotomy, and it fails to consider aggressive acts with multiple motives. Knowledge structure models of aggression easily handle these problems. Taking extreme measures to preserve the hostile-instrumental dichotomy will delay further advances in understanding and controlling human aggression. Therefore, this seems a proper time to "pull the plug" and allow the hostile-instrumental aggression dichotomy a dignified death.

Abstract
Outlines 5 models of the temperature-aggression hypothesis: negative affect escape, simple negative affect, excitation transfer/misattribution, cognitive neoassociation, and physiological-thermoregulatory. Reviews relevant studies. Aggression measures include violent crime, spouse abuse, horn-honking, and delivery of electric shock. Analysis levels include geographic regional, seasonal, monthly, and daily variations in aggression, and concomitant temperature-aggression effects in field and laboratory settings. Field studies clearly show that heat increases aggression. Laboratory studies show inconsistencies, possibly because of several artifacts. Specific models have not been adequately tested, but the excitation transfer/misattribution and cognitive neoassociation approaches appear most promising, whereas the negative affect escape appears the least viable. Suggestions for future work are made.

Abstract
The psychosocial functioning of children of unipolar depressed, bipolar, medically ill, and psychiatrically normal women was studied over a 2-year period. Ninety-six children aged 8-16 years were assessed at 6-month intervals on Child Behavior Checklist behavior problems, social competence, internalizing and externalizing behaviors, academic performance, and school behavior. The children of unipolar mothers showed significantly poorer functioning on all measures as compared with the other 3 groups of children, including bipolar offspring. A greater proportion of children in the unipolar group also had relatively chronic, clinically significant problems in psychosocial functioning. Children of bipolar women did not differ from children of psychiatrically normal women. Results are discussed in terms of the consequences of children's continuing exposure to maternal depression and attendant stressors, as well as the contribution of social and academic difficulties to a vicious cycle of maladjustment.

Abstract
This article examines the attributional style of lonely and depressed people. Previous studies have suggested that both lonely and depressed individuals ascribe failure to characterological defects in themselves. However, the prototype of a lonely person and the prototype of a depressed person suggest that this characteristic attributional style should mainly hold for interpersonal failures. A questionnaire was formed, consisting of 20 hypothetical situations. Half of the situations were interpersonal, and half were not; half described successful outcomes, and half described failures. The subject selected an attributional alternative that best explained the outcome. The questionnaire was administered to 304 students, along with the Beck Depression Inventory and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. The results showed that lonely and depressed people ascribe interpersonal failures to unchangeable characterological defects in themselves (e.g., a lack of ability). Because the prototype of a lonely person is more singularly interpersonal than is the prototype of a depressed person, we hypothesized that loneliness would show higher correlations with the attributional style. This hypothesis was also confirmed. The findings were replicated using a modified version of the questionnaire.

Abstract
Recent studies have demonstrated that several specific types of acoustically-evoked GABA-mediated inhibition occur in neurons of the central nucleus of inferior colliculus (ICc). The dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) provides a major GABAergic projection to ICc. The present study examined the effects of electrical or chemical stimulation or reversible blockade within the DNLL on the discharge characteristics of ICc neurons in anesthetized rats. Microinjection of a local anesthetic (lidocaine) or a GABA-A agonist (THIP) via a cannula placed into DNLL reversibly blocked acoustically-evoked binaural inhibition and increased spontaneous firing in most contralateral ICc neurons. Trains of electrical pulses or microinjection of the excitant amino acid, kainate, into DNLL resulted in reduced acoustically-evoked firing, which was similar to binaural inhibition, in most contralateral ICc neurons examined. The effects of DNLL electrical stimulation were reversibly blocked by microinjection of THIP into the stimulation site, suggesting that the effect of the electrical stimulation is mediated by direct effects on cell bodies of DNLL neurons. These data support the idea that contralateral GABAergic input from the DNLL is inhibitory to ICc neurons. Thus, binaural inhibition and tonic inhibition in ICc neurons may be mediated, in part, by the GABAergic projection from the contralateral DNLL.

Abstract
The literature on self-blame and depression reveals two interrelated problems. First, although R. Janoff-Bulman's (1979) conceptualizations of self-blame are clear, empirical operationalization is difficult and has resulted in approaches that do not capture the richness of the constructs. Second, past research has produced inconsistent findings. A comprehensive literature review revealed that the inconsistencies are related to the method of assessing attributions. A correlational study designed to more accurately represent the self-blame conceptualization revealed that both behavioral and characterological self-blame contribute uniquely to depression and loneliness. Supplementary results regarding circumstantial attributions and regarding attributional styles for success were presented. Empirical issues regarding possible methodological refinements and effect size, as well as the value of categorical approaches to the study of attributional style were discussed.

Abstract
Motivation: Existing microarray genotype-calling algorithms adopt either SNP-by-SNP (SNP-wise) or sample-by-sample (sample-wise) approaches to calling. We have developed a novel genotype-calling algorithm for the Illumina platform, optiCall, that uses both SNP-wise and sample-wise calling to more accurately ascertain genotypes at rare, low-frequency and common variants. Results: Using data from 4537 individuals from the 1958 British Birth Cohort genotyped on the Immunochip, we estimate the proportion of SNPs lost to downstream analysis due to false quality control failures, and rare variants misclassified as monomorphic, is only 1.38% with optiCall, in comparison to 3.87, 7.85 and 4.09% for Illuminus, GenoSNP and GenCall, respectively. We show that optiCall accurately captures rare variants and can correctly account for SNPs where probe intensity clouds are shifted from their expected positions. Abstract
The aim of this study was to conduct a review of the literature to assess the relationship between quantity and pattern of sucrose use and dental caries. Using hand and electronic methods (MEDLINE, EMBASE) the literature was searched for epidemiological papers concerning any relationship of sugars and dental caries published since 1856. Superficial hand searching was carried out between 1856 and 1940, detailed hand searching 1940-1966 and electronic 1966-2007. Selection criteria were set based on, but not confined to, Cochran style standards. Investigations were categorized as A, fulfilling all criteria; B1, relevant fulfilling 19 of 23 criteria; B2, relevant but fulfilling only between 12 and 18 of the selection criteria; and C, all other papers. There were 95 papers meeting most (more than 12) or all of the selected criteria. Only 1 paper was graded A; 31 as B1. There were in addition some 65 as B2 and all the rest as C, which were discarded. There were a wide variety of study designs and those graded A or B1 comprised 23 ecological cross-sectional, 7 cohort and 2 case control studies. Summary results showed that 6 papers found a positive, significant relationship of sugar quantity to dental caries, 19 of 31 studies reported a significant relationship of sugar frequency of use to dental caries. The balance of studies does not demonstrate a relationship between sugar quantity, but a moderately significant relationship of sugar frequency to dental caries.

Abstract
Reciprocal relationships between child characteristics and such familial factors as parental psychopathology and interaction style with the child characterize the development and maintenance of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as its comorbidity with antisocial behavior. Our goal was to ascertain the ability of negative maternal behavior exhibited during mother-son interactions to predict independently observed overt and covert externalizing behavior in the child, controlling for current maternal symptomatology and the boy's acting out behavior during the interaction. Participants were 49 boys with ADHD and 37 comparison boys, aged 6 to 12 years. Hierarchical multiple-regression analyses revealed that, even with maternal psychopathology and child negativity with the mother partialed, maternal negative behaviors predicted both observed noncompliance exhibited in class and play settings and laboratory stealing. Stealing was predicted from maternal negativity even with child interactional compliance controlled. Differential predictions of noncompliance were revealed in ADHD versus comparison families, yet similar patterns emerged for stealing within each group. Results are discussed in light of the high risk for antisocial behavior in ADHD children.

Abstract
The conversion of testosterone to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone by the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase is inhibited by finasteride. In a study in which maternal dosing with finasteride commenced on Gestational Day 15 and terminated on Postpartum Day 21, there were 13 and 27% decreases in anogenital distance of male pups on Postnatal Day 1 at 0.03 and 3 mg/kg/day, respectively. These decreases were largely reversed by Postnatal Day 22 even though treatment of the dams continued. Treatment at 3 mg/kg/day also resulted in hypospadias with cleft prepuce and a 5-day delay in the separation of the prepuce from the glans penis in those animals without hypospadias. A second study in which 20 mg/kg/day finasteride was administered on successive 2-day periods during late gestation in rats demonstrated that the period of Gestational Days 16 to 17 was the most sensitive (critical period) for finasteride-induced hypospadias, cleft prepuce, decreased anogenital distance, reduced prostate weight, and nipple formation in F1 male offspring. This critical period is just prior to the appearance on Day 18 of gestation of a midline mesenchymal plate between the urogenital sinus and the rectum in normal male fetuses. This midline plate does not appear in finasteride-exposed fetuses destined to have hypospadias as demonstrated in a previous study. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that finasteride causes hypospadias by preventing the formation of the medial mesenchymal plate which is necessary for assisting the movement of the urogenital sinus from the base to the tip of the genital tubercle.

Abstract
These experiments determined the extent to which the hippocampal system and the medial frontal cortex are selectively involved in cognitive mapping in spatial environments. Rats were trained to discriminate between two 3-dimensional objects based on either the location of the objects in the test environment, or on the stimulus characteristics of the objects themselves. Following the acquisition of one of these discrimination tasks, each rat was given a series of transfer tests to determine the extent to which a cognitive mapping strategy had been used to solve the task. Each rat was then given a lesion in the fimbria-fornix or the medial frontal cortex, or a control operation. In the location discrimination, rats with fimbria-fornix lesions, as compared to control rats: (a) performed poorly at the beginning of retention testing; (b) relearned the task to criterion performance; (c) performed normally during the transfer tests indicating that they used a cognitive mapping strategy, and (d) performed poorly in the discrimination reversals. In the object discrimination, these rats performed as well as controls during retention and transfer tests, but had a slight impairment during discrimination reversals. The performance of rats with lesions in the medial frontal cortex was worse than that of the controls during the retention of both discriminations, and during the reversal of the location, but not the object discrimination. These results are related to predictions of current theories implicating the hippocampus and medial frontal cortex in spatially organized behaviors, particularly those behaviors requiring cognitive mapping.

Abstract
Alterations of excitant amino acid (EAA) action are implicated in seizure susceptibility in the genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR). The inferior colliculus (IC) is critical for audiogenic seizure (AGS) initiation in the GEPR. The present study observed that bilateral microinjection into the IC of L-canaline, a glutamate synthesis inhibitor, decreased AGS severity in the GEPR and also decreased potassium-evoked release of glutamate from IC slices. Bilateral microinjection of NMDA receptor antagonists, 2-amino-7-phosphonoheptanoate (AP7) or 3-((+/-)-2-carboxypiperazin-4-yl)-propyl-1-phosphonate (CPP) into IC blocked AGS, and an antagonist at non-NMDA EAA receptors, 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione (CNQX), also blocked AGS. NMDA receptor antagonists were 5-200 times more effective than CNQX. Microinjection of a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, dizocilpine (MK-801), into IC had little effect except with very high doses. Microinjection of CPP or AP7 into the IC blocked AGS at considerably lower doses as compared to pontine reticular formation (PRF). However, MK-801 attenuated AGS when microinjected into PRF at doses that were ineffective in IC. Systemically administered CPP blocked AGS and significantly reduced IC neuronal firing in the behaving GEPR, suggesting an important action of systemically administered NMDA receptor antagonists on brainstem auditory nuclei critical to AGS. The present results support a critical role for glutamate acting, in part, through NMDA receptors in IC in initiation of AGS.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the frequency and significance of stenoses or occlusions developing within transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) and identify predictive factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records of 52 patients who underwent TIPS placement between September 1991 and October 1993 were reviewed. Various shunt parameters were correlated with the development of shunt abnormalities. Findings at follow-up portography and frequency of variceal bleeding and paracentesis were also noted. RESULTS Twenty-four patients were followed up for at least 6 months. In eight patients, stenoses developed within 6 months; one shunt occluded. No clear correlations were found between shunt parameters and development of shunt abnormalities. Two of four patients with recurrent variceal bleeding had associated shunt abnormalities. The frequency of stenosis of TIPS was high. CONCLUSION Early detection and prompt revision of stenotic shunts may decrease the frequency of recurrent variceal bleeding and ascites.

Abstract
The genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) exhibits elevated seizure sensitivity and audiogenic seizures (AGS). The inferior colliculus (IC) is the most critical brain region for AGS initiation. The present study evaluated IC neuronal firing and convulsive behavior simultaneously in freely moving GEPRs. High intensity acoustic stimulation produces neuronal firing reductions (intensity-induced inhibition) in about 50% of IC neurons in normal rats. However, in GEPR IC neurons, intensity-induced inhibition is significantly less effective than normal. Offset inhibition is also reduced in GEPR IC neurons, which leads to a greater than normal incidence of offset (afterdischarge) responses at high stimulus intensities. At AGS onset most IC neurons exhibit burst firing and reductions of acoustically evoked neuronal responses. Responsiveness to acoustic stimuli returns following AGS. This change in IC neuronal firing pattern suggests that the network that governs IC neuronal firing has temporarily changed from the auditory system to the network that mediates seizure propagation. GABA is strongly implicated in intensity-induced, binaural, and offset inhibition in IC neurons. The diminished efficacy of these forms of GABA-mediated acoustically evoked inhibition in the GEPR IC extends previous results, showing reduced effectiveness of exogenously applied GABA and benzodiazepine in GEPR IC neurons. This reduced effectiveness of GABA-mediated inhibition along with excess excitant amino acids in GEPR IC, previously reported, appear to be vital neurotransmitter mechanisms, subserving the exaggerated output of IC neurons at high acoustic intensities. This exaggerated IC firing may be instrumental in seizure initiation in this epilepsy model.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Serum potassium has been found to be a significant predictor of diabetes risk, but the effect of dietary potassium on diabetes risk is not clear. We sought to determine if dietary potassium is associated with risk of incident type 2 diabetes in young adults. METHODS We used data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. Potassium intake was measured by (1) an average of three 24 h urinary potassium collections at the 5-year study visit, and (2) the CARDIA dietary assessment instrument at baseline. Incident type 2 diabetes cases were ascertained on the basis of use of diabetes medication and laboratory measurements. Analyses were adjusted for relevant confounders including intake of fruit and vegetables and other dietary factors. RESULTS Of 1,066 participants with urinary potassium measurements, 99 (9.3%) developed diabetes over 15 years of follow-up. In multivariate models, adults in the lowest urinary potassium quintile were more than twice as likely to develop diabetes as their counterparts in the highest quintile (HR 2.45; 95% CI 1.08, 5.59). Of 4,754 participants with dietary history measurements, 373 (7.8%) developed diabetes over 20 years of follow-up. In multivariate models, African-Americans had a significantly increased risk of diabetes with lower potassium intake, which was not found in whites. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Low dietary potassium is associated with increased risk of incident diabetes in African-Americans. Randomised clinical trials are needed to determine if potassium supplementation, from either dietary or pharmacological sources, could reduce the risk of diabetes, particularly in higher-risk populations.

Abstract
Surveillance for musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremity in industry is in its infancy. Research efforts to elucidate the causal factors of these disorders often rely on either the analysis of existing medical records, worker compensation records (passive surveillance), or the surveying of workers with questionnaire and physical examination (active surveillance). The use of either type of data for routine surveillance presents several difficulties illustrated with the results presented in this paper. The analysis of existing records is generally less costly but the reliability of the data is difficult to assess. Standardized questionnaire and physical examinations can be as sensitive as the use of unusually thorough existing occupational medical records; however, it is unclear whether the additional cost of an active surveillance system will deter the routine use of such systems.

Abstract
Tiagabine is a new anticonvulsant drug that blocks the uptake of GABA, prolonging the action of this inhibitory transmitter. In the present study the effects of systemically administered tiagabine [30 mg/kg, ip (ED50)] were examined on audiogenic seizure (AGS) severity and neuronal firing in the inferior colliculus (IC) in the freely moving genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR-9). The IC is known to be critical to AGS initiation. The effects of focal microinjection of tiagabine into the IC were also examined. Bilateral focal microinjection of tiagabine into the IC significantly reduced seizure severity in the GEPR-9. Systemically administered tiagabine also produced a significant reduction in seizure severity in the GEPR-9. Tiagabine produced a reduction in IC (central nucleus) neuronal firing, which was significant only at high acoustic intensities (90-105 dB), concomitant with the considerable reduction in seizure severity. These data are consistent with enhancement by tiagabine of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibition in IC, which is most prominent at high acoustic intensities. The time course of the reduction in neuronal firing of IC neurons paralleled the reduction in seizure severity. Previous studies have shown that two forms of GABA-mediated inhibition (intensity-induced and offset inhibition) in IC neurons are most prominent at high stimulus intensities, which are required to induce AGS. The blockade of GABA uptake by tiagabine may act to inhibit audiogenic seizures, in part, by intensifying these naturally occurring forms of acoustically evoked inhibition in inferior colliculus neurons.

Abstract
The hypothesized relation between uncomfortably hot temperatures and aggressive behavior was examined in two studies of violent and nonviolent crime. Data on rates of murder, rape, assault, robbery, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft were gathered from archival sources. The first three crimes listed are violent; the latter four are less violent (labeled nonviolent). On the basis of previous research and theory (Anderson & Anderson, 1984), it was predicted that violent crimes would be more prevalent in the hotter quarters of the year and in hotter years. Furthermore, it was predicted that this temperature-crime relation would be stronger for violent than for nonviolent crime. Study 1 confirmed both predictions. Also, differences among cities in violent crime were predicted to be related to the hotness of cities; this effect was expected to be stronger for violent than for nonviolent crimes. Study 2 confirmed both predictions, even when effects of a variety of social, demographic, and economic variables were statistically removed. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Unlike the elderly, healthy middle aged adults are at relatively low risk of acquiring serious pneumococcal disease. An explanation that has been proposed is that people in this age group have significant amounts of serum antibody (primarily IgG2) that react with any pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide serotypes. The level of antibody can be as high as several hundred micrograms per milliliter of blood for some serotypes. A significant component of this reactivity is directed toward the conserved C-polysaccharide depletion. Even after C-polysaccharide depletion, which is included as a routine part of the assay to determine antibody levels, resting antibody levels in a normal healthy adult population can vary widely. We have analyzed the reactivity of serum from 76 people to 16 pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide serotypes. The antibody reactivities to 13 of 16 serotypes are highly correlated with one another. Depletion of serum with C-polysaccharide and purified capsular polysaccharide inhibited antibody binding to type specific capsular polysaccharide. Cross-serotype inhibition of antibody binding was also observed. This indicates that there are materials contained within the pneumococcal polysaccharides that contribute to the cross-reactivity of serum antibodies in people that have not been vaccinated with the pneumococcal vaccine.

Abstract
The number of doctoral programs in nursing has increased significantly over the past 20 years. This growth has been driven in part by the pressing need to supply faculty to teach in undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. Yet, enrollment in and graduation from these programs has remained fairly constant even as the number of programs has grown. During this 20-year period, there have been numerous conferences, workshops, and meetings devoted to the topic of doctoral education with a constant thread running through them calling for the need to maintain quality--quality students, quality faculty, quality research, and quality course work and requirements--in them. Faculty teaching in these programs have given considerable thought to ways of assuring quality in the program of study so as to ensure the graduate's ability to function as a teacher and researcher. Yet, despite these efforts, still less than 50 per cent of nursing faculty possess the doctorate, faculty are experiencing difficulty in fulfilling the tripartite mission of colleges and universities, and extramural funding for research is very unevenly distributed across programs and, in total, is inadequate to build the science. This article examines the strengths and weaknesses of doctoral programs in nursing at the start of the new millennium in which the challenges in higher education are forecasted to become more focused and intense, using accepted benchmarks of quality for students, faculty, and curricula.
