Abstract
The death of massive stars produces a variety of supernovae, which are linked to the structure of the exploding stars. The detection of several precursor stars of type II supernovae has been reported (see, for example, ref. 3), but we do not yet have direct information on the progenitors of the hydrogen-deficient type Ib and Ic supernovae. Here we report that the peculiar type Ib supernova SN 2006jc is spatially coincident with a bright optical transient that occurred in 2004. Spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the supernova leads us to suggest that the progenitor was a carbon-oxygen Wolf-Rayet star embedded within a helium-rich circumstellar medium. There are different possible explanations for this pre-explosion transient. It appears similar to the giant outbursts of luminous blue variable stars (LBVs) of 60-100 solar masses, but the progenitor of SN 2006jc was helium- and hydrogen-deficient (unlike LBVs). An LBV-like outburst of a Wolf-Rayet star could be invoked, but this would be the first observational evidence of such a phenomenon. Alternatively, a massive binary system composed of an LBV that erupted in 2004, and a Wolf-Rayet star exploding as SN 2006jc, could explain the observations.

Abstract
We previously showed that intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA in as yet unidentified cells of blood vessels and leptomeninges in the rat brain and proposed a possible role of these cells as the source of prostaglandin E2 in the genesis of fever (Cao et al., Brain Res., 697 (1995) 187-196). In the present study, to proceed further with this line of research, we addressed the following two questions: first, does a pyrogenic dose of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), an endogenous pyrogen, induce COX-2 mRNA in the brain blood vessels and leptomeninges? Secondly, if it does, what type of cells are positive for COX-2 mRNA? Intraperitoneal injection of recombinant human IL-1 beta (30 micrograms/kg) induced fever in rats and an in situ hybridization study revealed that faint but significant COX-2 mRNA signals appeared in the blood vessels and leptomeninges at 1.5 h after the injection (the early rising phase of fever). The mRNA signals increased in number and intensity at 4 h (early plateau phase), decreased at 6.5 h (early recovery phase), and completely disappeared by 10 h after the injection (late recovery phase). The COX-2 mRNA positive cells in the blood vessels were likely to be the endothelial cells since the corresponding cells in the adjacent mirror-imaged section also expressed mRNAs for intracellular adhesion molecule-1 and the type-I interleukin-1 receptor, although those in the leptomeninges still remained unidentified. These results imply that circulating IL-1 beta acts on its receptor on the endothelial cells of the brain vasculature to induce COX-2 mRNA, which is possibly responsible for the elevated level of PGE2 seen during fever.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Altered activities of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been associated with cancer development. We investigated the mechanisms by which the long intergenic noncoding RNA UFC1 (lincRNA-UFC1) promotes progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), using human tissues and cell lines. METHODS We used microarrays to compare expression profiles of lncRNAs in HCC samples and adjacent nontumor tissues (controls) from 7 patients. HCC and nontumor tissues were collected from 2006 through 2012 from patients in Guangzhou, China. We used quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to measure levels of lincRNA-UFC1 in tissues from 49 patients, and in situ hybridization to measure levels in samples from 131 patients; clinical data were collected from patients for up to 5 years. The lincRNA-UFC1 was expressed transgenically, or knocked down with short hairpin RNAs, in BEL-7402, SK-Hep1, Huh7, and MHCC-97H HCC cell lines; luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation and pull-down assays were performed. We also analyzed growth of xenograft tumors from these cells in BALB/c nude mice. RESULTS Levels of the lincRNA-UFC1 were increased in HCC tissues compared with controls, and associated with tumor size, Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage, and patient outcomes. Transgenic expression of the lincRNA-UFC1 in HCC cells promoted their proliferation and cell-cycle progression and inhibited apoptosis, whereas short hairpin RNA knockdown of lincRNA-UFC1 had opposite effects. Xenograft tumors grown from cells overexpressing lincRNA-UFC1 had larger mean volumes and weights, and formed more rapidly, than tumors grown from control cells. Tumors grown from lincRNA-UFC1 knockdown were smaller than controls. The lincRNA-UFC1 interacted directly with the messenger RNA (mRNA) stabilizing protein HuR (encoded by ELAVL1) to increase levels of β-catenin mRNA (encoded by CTNNB1) and protein. Levels of lincRNA-UFC1 correlated with those of β-catenin in HCC tissues. In contrast, there was a negative correlation between levels of microRNA 34a and lincRNA-UFC1 in HCC tissues; microRNA 34a reduced the stability of lincRNA-UFC1. CONCLUSIONS The lincRNA-UFC1, a target of microRNA 34a, promotes proliferation and reduces apoptosis in HCC cells to promote growth of xenograft tumors in mice. It interacts directly with the mRNA stabilizing protein HuR to regulate levels of β-catenin in HCC cells.

Abstract
X-ray structures of the universal translation initiation factor IF2/eIF5B have been determined in three states: free enzyme, inactive IF2/eIF5B.GDP, and active IF2/eIF5B.GTP. The "chalice-shaped" enzyme is a GTPase that facilitates ribosomal subunit joining and Met-tRNA(i) binding to ribosomes in all three kingdoms of life. The conserved core of IF2/eIF5B consists of an N-terminal G domain (I) plus an EF-Tu-type beta barrel (II), followed by a novel alpha/beta/alpha-sandwich (III) connected via an alpha helix to a second EF-Tu-type beta barrel (IV). Structural comparisons reveal a molecular lever, which amplifies a modest conformational change in the Switch 2 region of the G domain induced by Mg(2+)/GTP binding over a distance of 90 A from the G domain active center to domain IV. Mechanisms of GTPase function and ribosome binding are discussed.

Abstract
Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) is a newly discovered isoform of cyclooxygenase that is inducible by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or cytokines. This enzyme is considered to play a major role in inflammatory processes by catalyzing the production of prostaglandins. In the present study, induction of COX-2 mRNA in the rat brain by intraperitoneal injection of LPS was studied by the in situ hybridization technique with special attention paid to timing and sites of induction along with the time course of fever. In situ hybridization was carried out on sections of rat brain, 1 h (latent phase), 2.5 h (maximally febrile phase), 4 h (plateau phase), and 7 h (recovery phase) after the LPS injection, as well as on those from the brains of untreated and saline-injected rats. Injection of LPS induced COX-2 mRNA in the brain in two different constituents: neuronal cells and non-parenchymal cells of the blood vessels and leptomeninges. Induction in the neuronal cells was restricted to some telencephalic areas where the COX-2 mRNA signal was also detected in control animals. The signal was maximally enhanced by 50 to 80% over the basal level 1 h after LPS injection. The COX-2 mRNA signal was hardly detectable in neuronal and glial cells in other brain regions, including the preoptic area, either in control or LPS-injected rats. Strong COX-2 mRNA signals, however, appeared in the inner surface of blood vessels and the leptomeninges over the entire brain, including the preoptic area and its vicinity. The signals were not detectable in the brains of control rats and were most intense in the brains of rats treated with LPS for 2.5 h or 4 h. These results demonstrate that two major cell groups in the brain, neuronal cells and non-parenchymal cells, are responsible for the enhanced production of prostaglandins after systemic LPS treatment. Considering the site and timing of induction, we propose a possible role for blood vessels and leptomeninges as the source of prostaglandin E2 in the genesis of fever.

Abstract
The bacterial cell division protein FtsZ assembles into the cytokinetic Z ring that directs cytokinesis in prokaryotes. In Escherichia coli the formation of the Z ring is prevented by induction of the cell division inhibitor SulA (SfiA), a component of the SOS response. Here we show that a MalE-SulA fusion that retains this inhibitory function in vivo inhibits the GTPase activity and polymerization of FtsZ in vitro. MalE-SulA10, which does not block Z ring formation in vivo, is unable to inhibit the GTPase activity and polymerization in vitro. Furthermore, FtsZ114, which is refractory to SulA in vivo, is not inhibited by MalE-SulA. These results indicate that SulA blocks Z ring formation by blocking FtsZ polymerization.

Abstract
The interaction of FtsZ with itself, GTP, and FtsA was examined by analyzing the sensitivity of FtsZ to proteolysis and by using the yeast two-hybrid system. The N-terminal conserved domain consisting of 320 amino acids bound GTP, and a central region of FtsZ, encompassing slightly more than half of the protein, was cross-linked to GTP. Site-directed mutagenesis revealed that none of six highly conserved aspartic acid and asparagine residues were required for GTP binding. These results indicate that the specificity determinants for GTP binding are different than those for the GTPase superfamily. The N-terminal conserved domain of FtsZ contained a site for self-interaction that is conserved between FtsZ proteins from distantly related bacterial species. FtsZ320, which was truncated at the end of the conserved domain, was a potent inhibitor of division although it expressed normal GTPase activity and could polymerize. FtsZ was also found to interact directly with FtsA, and this interaction could also be observed between these proteins from distantly related bacterial species.

Abstract
The diagnosis of primary or metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) can be difficult, especially in small biopsies, because of the wide variety of histologic appearances and clinical presentations that RCC can assume. An immunomarker specific for RCC is currently not available. We tested the relevant diagnostic use of the Renal Cell Carcinoma Marker (RCC Ma), a monoclonal antibody, against a normal human proximal tubular brush border antigen. Immunostaining using RCC Ma and the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique was performed on archival tissues from primary and metastatic tumors of renal or nonrenal origin. A total of 122 of 153 primary RCCs (79.7%) were positive [clear cell (84%), papillary (96%), chromophobe (45%), sarcomatoid (25%), and collecting duct (0%)], with > or =10% of tumor cells stained in 93% of cases. None of the 64 primary renal tumors other than RCC, including 15 oncocytomas, was positive. Fifteen of 146 (10.2%) nonrenal primary tumors were positive (5 of 17 breast tumors, 8 of 8 parathyroid adenomas, and 2 of 7 embryonal carcinomas). Forty-two of 63 (67%) metastatic RCCs were positive with > or =10% of cells being stained in 83% of them. Two of 108 (2%) metastases from tumors other than RCCs were positive, both of which were metastatic breast carcinomas; however, only 10% (2 of 19) of metastatic breast carcinomas were positive. RCC Ma is an excellent marker for primary RCC, which should facilitate its diagnosis in a small biopsy. Although RCC Ma remains highly specific (98%) for metastatic RCC, a negative result may not rule out metastatic RCC because of a rather low sensitivity and a focal staining pattern in some of the positive cases. RCC Ma may also facilitate the differential diagnosis between oncocytoma and other types of RCC when they are composed mostly of eosinophilic cells.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles are a kind of nanomaterials that have received great interest in field of biomedicine due to their electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical and optical properties. With these great potentials came the consequence of their interaction with biological tissues and molecules which presents the possibility of toxicity. This paper aims to consolidate and bring forward the studies performed that evaluate the toxicological aspect of AuNPs which were categorized into in vivo and in vitro studies. Both indicate to some extent oxidative damage to tissues and cell lines used in vivo and in vitro respectively with the liver, spleen and kidney most affected. The outcome of these review showed small controversy but however, the primary toxicity and its extent is collectively determined by the characteristics, preparations and physicochemical properties of the NPs. Some studies have shown that AuNPs are not toxic, though many other studies contradict this statement. In order to have a holistic inference, more studies are required that will focus on characterization of NPs and changes of physical properties before and after treatment with biological media. So also, they should incorporate controlled experiment which includes supernatant control Since most studies dwell on citrate or CTAB-capped AuNPs, there is the need to evaluate the toxicity and pharmacokinetics of functionalized AuNPs with their surface composition which in turn affects their toxicity. Functionalizing the NPs surface with more peculiar ligands would however help regulate and detoxify the uptake of these NPs.

Abstract
The interaction between inhibitors of cell division and FtsZ were assessed by using the yeast two-hybrid system. An interaction was observed between FtsZ and SulA, a component of the SOS response, and the interacting regions were mapped to their conserved domains. This interaction was reduced by mutations in sulA and by most mutations in ftsZ that make cell refractory to sulA. No interaction was detected between FtsZ and MinCD, an inhibitory component of the site selection system. However, interactions were observed among various members of the Min system, and MinE was found to reduce the interaction between MinC and MinD. The implications of these findings for cell division are discussed.

Abstract
The localization of FtsN in Escherichia coli was inves tigated by immunofluorescence microscopy. FtsN is an essential cell division protein with a simple bitopic topology, a short N-terminal cytoplasmic segment fused to a large carboxy periplasmic domain through a single transmembrane domain. FtsN was found to localize to the septum in a ring pattern similar to that observed for FtsZ and FtsA, although the frequency of cells with rings was less. A MalG-FtsN fusion was also localized to the septum, indicating that the information for FtsN localization is supplied by its periplasmic domain. FtsN localization was dependent upon the prior localization of FtsZ and FtsA and required the function of FtsI and FtsQ. Consistent with FtsN functioning after FtsZ, Z rings were observed in a mutant depleted of FtsN.

Abstract
Background Radioimmunotherapy has a promising antitumor effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), depending on the regulatory effect of radiotherapy on tumor immune microenvironment. Ionizing radiation (IR)-induced DNA damage repair (DDR) pathway activation leads to the inhibition of immune microenvironment, thus impairing the antitumor effect of radioimmunotherapy. However, it is unclear whether inhibition of the DDR pathway can enhance the effect of radioimmunotherapy. In this study, we aim to explore the role of DDR inhibitor AZD6738 on the combination of radiotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in HCC. Methods C57BL/6 mouse subcutaneous tumor model was used to evaluate the ability of different treatment regimens in tumor growth control and tumor recurrence inhibition. Effects of each treatment regimen on the alterations of immunophenotypes including the quantification, activation, proliferating ability, exhaustion marker expression, and memory status were assessed by flow cytometry. Results AZD6738 further increased radiotherapy-stimulated CD8+ T cell infiltration and activation and reverted the immunosuppressive effect of radiation on the number of Tregs in mice xenografts. Moreover, compared with radioimmunotherapy (radiotherapy plus anti-PD-L1 (Programmed death ligand 1)), the addition of AZD6738 boosted the infiltration, increased cell proliferation, enhanced interferon (IFN)-γ production ability of TIL (tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte) CD8+ T cells, and caused a decreasing trend in the number of TIL Tregs and exhausted T cells in mice xenografts. Thus, the tumor immune microenvironment was significantly improved. Meanwhile, triple therapy (AZD6738 plus radiotherapy plus anti-PD-L1) also induced a better immunophenotype than radioimmunotherapy in mice spleens. As a consequence, triple therapy displayed greater benefit in antitumor efficacy and mice survival than radioimmunotherapy. Mechanism study revealed that the synergistic antitumor effect of AZD6738 with radioimmunotherapy relied on the activation of cyclic GMP–AMP synthase /stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS/STING) signaling pathway. Furthermore, triple therapy led to stronger immunologic memory and lasting antitumor immunity than radioimmunotherapy, thus preventing tumor recurrence in mouse models. Conclusions Our findings indicate that AZD6738 might be a potential synergistic treatment for radioimmunotherapy to control the proliferation of HCC cells, prolong survival, and prevent tumor recurrence in patients with HCC by improving the immune microenvironment.

Abstract
Transplantation of growth factor-mobilized peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) is widely used in the treatment of several neoplastic diseases. While in PBPC harvests the presence of several accessory immune and tumor cells has been documented, that of stromal cells has not been reported. In the present study, we investigated for the presence of stromal cells in growth factor-mobilized PBPC harvests from breast cancer patients. Low-density cells from PBCP harvests in culture gave rise to an adherent layer containing fibroblast-like and large flat round cells. These cells express positive immunofluorescence staining for collagen I, collagen III, fibronectin, VCAM-1 (CD106), ICAM-1 (CD54) and mesenchymal antigens recognized by monoclonal antibodies, SH2 and SH3. PBPC-derived stromal cells do not express antigens CD34, CD45 and CD14. Stromal cells were detected in the PBPC harvests of 11/14 patients (median 0.63%; range 0.02-2.32) and their concentration correlates with the number of CD34+ cells in PBPC.

Abstract
Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a multi-modal hematopoietic growth factor, which also has profound effects on the diseased CNS. G-CSF has been shown to enhance recovery from neurologic deficits in rodent models of ischemia. G-CSF appears to facilitate neuroplastic changes by both mobilization of bone marrow-derived cells and by its direct actions on CNS cells. The overall objective of the study was to determine if G-CSF administration in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) (Tg APP/PS1) would impact hippocampal-dependent learning by modifying the underlying disease pathology. A course of s.c. administration of G-CSF for a period of less than three weeks significantly improved cognitive performance, decreased beta-amyloid deposition in hippocampus and entorhinal cortex and augmented total microglial activity. Additionally, G-CSF reduced systemic inflammation indicated by suppression of the production or activity of major pro-inflammatory cytokines in plasma. Improved cognition in AD mice was associated with increased synaptophysin immunostaining in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions and augmented neurogenesis, evidenced by increased numbers of calretinin-expressing cells in dentate gyrus. Given that G-CSF is already utilized clinically to safely stimulate hematopoietic stem cell production, these basic research findings will be readily translated into clinical trials to reverse or forestall the progression of dementia in AD. The primary objective of the present study was to determine whether a short course of G-CSF administration would have an impact on the pathological hallmark of AD, the age-dependent accumulation of A beta deposits, in a transgenic mouse model of AD (APP+ PS1; Tg). A second objective was to determine whether such treatment would impact cognitive performance in a hippocampal-dependent memory paradigm. To explain the G-CSF triggered amyloid reduction and associated reversal of cognitive impairment, several mechanisms of action were explored. (1) G-CSF was hypothesized to increase activation of resident microglia and to increase mobilization of marrow-derived microglia. The effect of G-CSF on microglial activation was examined by quantitative measurements of total microglial burden. To determine if G-CSF increased trafficking of marrow-derived microglia into brain, bone marrow-derived green fluorescent protein-expressing (GFP+) microglia were visualized in the brains of chimeric AD mice. (2) To assess the role of immune-modulation in mediating G-CSF effects, a panel of cytokines was measured in both plasma and brain. (3) To test the hypothesis that reduction of A beta deposits can affect synaptic area, quantitative measurement of synaptophysin immunoreactivity in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 sectors was undertaken. (4) To learn whether enhanced hippocampal neurogenesis was induced by G-CSF treatment, numbers of calretinin-expressing cells were determined in dentate gyrus.

Abstract
A nucleotide sequence (GenBank AI134194) was identified in the database of the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project based on the similarity of its translated sequence to insulin-like peptides known for other insects. The putative A chain of the Drosophila peptide was synthesized and used to produce an antiserum for immunocytochemistry. Medial neurosecretory cells and their axons were immunostained in whole brains of Drosophila larvae and adults. In larvae, immunostained axons from these cells extended to the corpus cardiacum in the ring gland and the hypocerebral ganglion and along the aorta in the head. In adults, axons from these cells extended along the aorta to the corpus cardiacum-hypocerebral ganglion complex near the cardiac valve and branched along the midgut and crop. In contrast, two clusters of lateral neurosecretory cells and their axons were immunostained weakly in brains of female mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti. No other cells were stained in the nervous systems or midguts of Drosophila larvae and adults or Ae. aegypti females. These specific localizations substantiate the existence of an endogenous insulin-like peptide in Drosophila and suggest that a similar peptide is present in the distantly related mosquitoes.

Abstract
FtsZ is an essential division protein in bacteria that functions by forming a ring at midcell that mediates septation. To further study the function of the Z ring the effect of a temperature-sensitive mutation, ftsZ84(Ts), on ring dynamics and septal progression was examined. Shifting a strain carrying an ftsZ84(Ts) mutation to the nonpermissive temperature led to loss of Z rings within 1 min. Septal ingrowth was immediately inhibited, and sharply demarcated septa, present at the time of the shift, were gradually replaced by blunted septa. These results indicate that the Z ring is required throughout septation. Shifting filaments to permissive temperature led to a rapid localization of FtsZ84 at regular intervals. Included in these localization events were complete and partial rings as well as spots, although some of these eventually aborted. These results reveal the rapid dynamics of FtsZ localization and indicate that nucleation sites are formed in the absence of FtsZ function. Interestingly, Z rings could not reform at division sites that were constricted although they could reform at sites that had not begun constriction.

Abstract
Studies suggest that dysfunction of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a possible contributor to the pathology and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several studies report reduced peripheral blood levels of BDNF in AD, but findings are inconsistent. This study sought to quantitatively summarize the clinical BDNF data in patients with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI, a prodromal stage of AD) with a meta-analytical technique. A systematic search of Pubmed, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library identified 29 articles for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Random-effects meta-analysis showed that patients with AD had significantly decreased baseline peripheral blood levels of BDNF compared with healthy control (HC) subjects (24 studies, Hedges' g=-0.339, 95% confidence interval (CI)=-0.572 to -0.106, P=0.004). MCI subjects showed a trend for decreased BDNF levels compared with HC subjects (14 studies, Hedges' g=-0.201, 95% CI=-0.413 to 0.010, P=0.062). No differences were found between AD and MCI subjects in BDNF levels (11 studies, Hedges' g=0.058, 95% CI=-0.120 to 0.236, P=0.522). Interestingly, the effective sizes and statistical significance improved after excluding studies with reported medication in patients (between AD and HC: 18 studies, Hedges' g=-0.492, P<0.001; between MCI and HC: 11 studies, Hedges' g=-0.339, P=0.003). These results strengthen the clinical evidence that AD or MCI is accompanied by reduced peripheral blood BDNF levels, supporting an association between the decreasing levels of BDNF and the progression of AD.

Abstract
Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inducible type of enzyme that is involved in prostaglandin biosynthesis. In the present study, we examined whether or not COX-2 is involved in fever that is induced by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and, if so, where in the brain COX-2 is induced by this factor. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of TNF-alpha into rats evoked a fever that started 1 h after the TNF injection, peaked 3 h after the injection, and then gradually declined. The fever was suppressed by pretreatment with a COX-2-specific inhibitor. With a time course similar to that of fever, COX-2 mRNA was induced in brain blood vessels. On the other hand, in some of the telencephalic neurons, COX-2 mRNA was constitutively expressed under the normal condition; but its level gradually decreased during the course of fever. Fever was also evoked by an intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of TNF-alpha. This febrile response was also suppressed by a COX-2 specific inhibitor and was associated with the induction of COX-2 mRNA in the brain blood vessels. On the other hand, the telencephalic neurons did not show consistent change in COX-2 mRNA level after i.c.v. injection of TNF-alpha or saline. COX-2-like immunoreactivity was found in some cells of the brain blood vessels 3 h after the TNF-alpha injection by either i.p. or i.c.v. route. Most of the COX-2-like immunoreactive cells were endothelial cells since COX-2-like immunoreactivity was colocalized with von Willebrand factor, an endothelial cell marker, in the same cells. These results suggest that the brain blood vessels are the major sites where TNF-alpha enhances PG biosynthesis after peripheral as well as after central injection, and provides further evidence supporting the hypothesis that COX-2 induced in the brain blood vessels is involved in fever.

Abstract
The authors investigated the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea (OSAH) and cognition in 36 older adults, 18 APOE ε4 carriers, and 18 non-carriers. Greater numbers of respiratory events negatively impacted memory function in ε4 carriers only. This is the first study to provide preliminary evidence for a negative interaction of APOE ε4 and OSAH on memory in older adults, which may have important implications for treating cognitive decline and delaying dementia onset.

Abstract
In this paper, a novel approach to examine the cortical functional connectivity using multichannel electroencephalographic (EEG) signals is proposed. First we utilized independent component analysis (ICA) to transform multichannel EEG recordings into independent processes and then applied source reconstruction algorithm [i.e., standardize low resolution brain electromagnetic (sLORETA)] to identify the cortical regions of interest (ROIs). Second, we performed a graph theory analysis of the bipartite network composite of ROIs and independent processes to assess the connectivity between ROIs. We applied this proposed algorithm and compared the functional connectivity network properties under resting state condition using 29 student-athletes prior to and shortly after sport-related mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). The major findings of interest are the following. There was 1) alterations in vertex degree at frontal and occipital regions in subjects suffering from MTBI, ( p < 0.05); 2) a significant decrease in the long-distance connectivity and significant increase in the short-distance connectivity as a result of MTBI, ( p < 0.05); 3) a departure from small-world network configuration in MTBI subjects. These major findings are discussed in relation to current debates regarding the brain functional connectivity within and between local and distal regions both in normal controls in pathological subjects.

Abstract
First-principles calculations are performed to study the geometry, electronic structure and magnetic properties of light non-metallic atom-doped graphene (B, N, O and F). The planar structure and the quasi-linear energy dispersion near the Dirac point remain through doping with B and N atoms, by which p-type doping and n-type doping graphene are respectively induced. A bandgap of about 0.5 eV is generated through O doping, and geometrically the O atom is also in the graphene plane. No magnetic moment is detected in B- , N- and O-doped graphene. For F doping, the F atom bonds with one of the carbon atoms close to the vacancy, with the other two carbon atoms undergoing a Jahn-Teller distortion. A weak polarized magnetic moment of 0.71 µ(B) is detected through F doping.

Abstract
Recent studies indicated that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) played important regulatory roles in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. However, the contribution of small nucleolar RNA host gene 20 (SNHG20) to cancer development remains largely unknown. The aim of the study is to investigate the expression of SNHG20 and its clinical significance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our results showed that the expression of SNHG20 was remarkably up-regulated in HCC tissues compared with adjacent non-tumor liver tissues from 49 fresh HCC samples (cohort 1) detected by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR, P = 0.004). The results were confirmed in 144 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded HCC tissues (cohort 2) by in situ hybridization (ISH). Meanwhile, the expression of SNHG20 was associated with tumor size (P = 0.027 for cohort 1 and P = 0.046 for cohort 2) and clinical stage (P = 0.027 for cohort 1 and P = 0.028 for cohort 2). Importantly, patients with high expression of SNHG20 had a shorter overall survival (OS, P < 0.001) and disease-free survival (DFS, P < 0.001) than those with low expression of SNHG20. Univatiate and multivariate analysis showed that SNHG20 was a significant and independent prognostic predictor for OS of HCC patients (hazard ratio = 3.985, 95% CI = 1.981-8.017, P < 0.001). In addition, a total of 331 HCC patients' data from the Caner Genome Atlas project (TCGA) were used to validate our findings. Consistently, the results from TCGA HCC cohort demonstrated that SNHG20 were overexpressed in HCC tissues compared with non-tumor liver tissues (P < 0.001). Patients with higher expression levels of SNHG20 had poorer OS (P = 0.021) and DFS (P < 0.001). Functionally, knockdown of SNHG20 in SK-Hep-1 cells significantly inhibited cellular proliferation, migration, and invasion. In conclusion, SNHG20, up-regulated in patients with HCC, may serve as an independent prognostic predictor for HCC patients.
