Abstract
Thirty-three monkeys took part in seven experiments designed to elucidate further the effect of fornix transection on learning and memory. In the first experiment the monkeys had to remember whether stimulus objects had previously been paired with reward or no reward, and they had to use this memory to guide choice between stimulus objects at retention tests according to an arbitrary rule which they had learned: to choose objects previously paired with no reward in preference to objects previously paired with reward. Fornix transection produced a severe and permanent impairment in this task. In the second experiment the monkeys also had to remember object-reward associations but the performance rule was more natural: to choose objects previously paired with reward. Here fornix transection had no effect. The third experiment required the monkeys to remember, given a stimulus object, which of two events of equal valence had previously been the outcome of displacing that object. The two events were either a peanut and a sultana or a black penny and a white penny of equal secondary reinforcing value. Performance was unimpaired by fornix transection. The fourth experiment also demonstrated, in a different paradigm, unimpaired recall of sensory events. The fifth experiment demonstrated an impairment following fornix transection in acquisition of simultaneous spatial-visual conditional discriminations; the sixth demonstrated normal learning by fornix-transected monkeys of a successive spatial-visual conditional discrimination and the seventh demonstrated unimpaired acquisition of a simultaneous auditory-visual conditional discrimination. These results, when considered in detail and together, are incompatible with existing hypotheses of hippocampal function. A new hypothesis is discussed.

Abstract
Reconstruction for symptomatic anterior cruciate deficient knees has yielded varying success rates. Prosthetic cruciate replacement has recently become a potentially attractive alternative. The results of the Gore-Tex polytetrafluoroethylene ligament, which is intended as a permanent replacement, are reported. Eighty-two patients were followed prospectively, mean age was 28 years (range, 16 to 51 years) and mean followup was 18 months (range, 12 to 30 months). Subjective scores improved in all categories, including pain, swelling, giving way, locking, and stair climbing. All patients without complications had no episodes of actual giving way, considered themselves improved, and returned to activities of daily living at 3 weeks and athletics at 8 months. Range of motion lacking at 3 months was 2 degrees of extension and 10 degrees of flexion, and at 12 months was 0 degrees of extension and 4 degrees of flexion. All mean objective data, including the anterior drawer, Lachman, and pivot shift, demonstrated improvement at final followup. Cybex testing revealed improvement in relative quadriceps strength from 88% to 99%. The KT-1000 Arthrometer showed improvement in the injured-normal knee difference score throughout the follow-up period. Of importance is that while final objective data was improved over initial data, an early nonprogressive shift toward loosening was indicated by worsening of the drawer, Lachman, pivot shift, and KT-1000 scores. This shift may be attributed to resorption of interposed soft tissue, creep, or loosening of the graft. Subjective scores remained stable after improving. Complications included four ruptures, four chronic sterile effusions with partial attenuation, one infection, and one symptomatic loose body.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
AIM Retrorectal tumours (RT) are uncommon, and diagnosis and management remain difficult. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of the surgical management of RT in our institution. METHOD Medical notes of all patients operated on for RT were reviewed. Clinical, radiological, surgical, histological data as well as morbidity and long-term results were noted. RESULTS Forty-seven patients [34 women (72%), mean age 45.8 (range 17-85) years] underwent surgery for RT between 1997 and 2011. The commonest symptoms were pain (n = 31) and suppuration (n = 10). Thirty-nine (83%) patients underwent preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Malignant lesions exhibited typical characteristics on MRI including heterogeneity (n = 5, 83%), solid appearance (n = 4, 67%), a low-T1 signal and high-T2 intensity (n = 5, 83%), enhancement after gadolinium injection (n = 5, 83%), irregular margin (n = 4, 67%) and extension above S3 (i = 5, 83%). A Kraske approach was used in 42 (89%) patients with resection of the coccyx in 25 (60%) and an abdominal or combined approach for the remaining five. Four patients developed complications (two haematoma, two abscess), but only one (haematoma) required reoperation. Histological examination showed 38 (80.9%) benign lesions. After a median follow-up of 71 (2-168) months, 5-year disease-free survival was 75% for malignant lesions and 93.1% for benign lesions (P = 0.023). Four (4/42; 9.5%) patients had moderate perineal pain after a Kraske approach, while no anal dysfunction was seen. CONCLUSION Magnetic resonance imaging was the most helpful investigation for retrorectal tumours. The posterior trans-sacrococcygeal approach is the procedure of choice for complete resection for most, especially for benign and cystic lesions without extension above S2.

Abstract
AIM Many surgical approaches have been described for the treatment of low rectovaginal fistulae (LRVF); however, all are associated with a high recurrence rate and a poor function. The Martius flap technique was first described in 1928 and has since been modified for the treatment of LRVF. The aims of this study were to evaluate the short- and long-term results of the Martius flap procedure. METHOD Twenty patients who underwent the Martius flap procedure between 2000 and 2010 were retrospectively included. Operative results and morbidity were evaluated. Quality of life (SF-12 score), quality of sexual life [Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) score] and anal continence (Wexner score) were determined. RESULTS Crohn's disease was the predominant aetiology (n = 8, 40%). The Martius flap was mostly harvested from the left side (n = 14, 66.7%). The morbidity rate was 15% (n = 3), and the mean hospital stay was 7.7 ± 3.7 days. At a mean follow up of 35 months, the success rate was 65%. Seven patients still had an LRVF: in patients with Crohn's disease the success rate was 50% (4/8). Fifteen patients (75%) answered the three questionnaires. Quality of life score was in the normal range: physical component summary score (PCS: 46.7 ± 9) and mental component summary score (MCS: 44.7 ± 11.3). The median (range) FSFI score was 5 (2-31.7). Eight patients (53%) deemed cured suffered no incontinence. The Wexner score was significantly higher in the presence of a persisting LRVF (2.6 ± 5.5 vs 13.4 ± 3.78) (P = 0.0018). Use of a right-sided flap was associated with a higher success rate (P = 0.0442). CONCLUSION The Martius flap procedure for LRVF, had a success rate of about 60% and a low morbidity.

Quality of colonoscopy performance among gastroenterology and surgical trainees: a need for common training standards for all trainees? Endoscopy 2011; 43:935-40. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM Cecal intubation and polyp detection rates are objective measures of colonoscopy performance. Minimum cecal intubation rates greater than 90% have been endorsed by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) UK. Performance data for medical and surgical trainee endoscopists are limited, and we used endoscopy quality parameters to compare these two groups. METHODS Retrospective review of all single-endoscopist colonoscopies done by gastroenterology and surgical trainees ("registrars," equivalent to fellows, postgraduate year 5) with more than two years' endoscopy experience, in 2006 and 2007 at a single academic medical center. Completion rates and polyp detection rates for endoscopists performing more than 50 colonoscopies during the study period were audited. Colonoscopy withdrawal time was prospectively observed in a representative subset of 140 patients. RESULTS Among 3079 audited single-endoscopist colonoscopies, seven gastroenterology trainees performed 1998 procedures and six surgery trainees performed 1081. The crude completion rate was 82%, 84% for gastroenterology trainees and 78% for surgery trainees (P < 0.0001). Adjusted for poor bowel preparation quality and obstructing lesions, the completion rate was 89%; 93% for gastroenterology trainees, and 84% for surgical trainees (P < 0.0001). The polyp detection rate was 19% overall, with 21% and 14% for gastroenterology and surgical trainees, respectively (P < 0.0001). The adenoma detection rate in patients over 50 was 12%; gastroenterology trainees 14% and surgical trainees 9% (P = 0.0065). In the prospectively audited procedures, median withdrawal time was greater in the gastroenterology trainee group and polyp detection rates correlated closely with withdrawal time (r = 0.99). CONCLUSION The observed disparity in endoscopic performance between surgical and gastroenterology trainees suggests the need for a combined or unitary approach to endoscopy training for specialist medical and surgical trainees.

Abstract
Background A 9-valent human papillomavirus-6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58 (9vHPV) vaccine extends coverage to 5 next most common oncogenic types (31/33/45/52/58) in cervical cancer versus quadrivalent HPV (qHPV) vaccine. We describe efficacy, immunogenicity, and safety in Asian participants (India, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand) from 2 international studies: a randomized, double-blinded, qHPV vaccine-controlled efficacy study (young women aged 16–26 years; NCT00543543; Study 001); and an immunogenicity study (girls and boys aged 9–15 years; NCT00943722; Study 002). Methods Participants (N = 2519) were vaccinated at day 1 and months 2 and 6. Gynecological samples (Study 001 only) and serum were collected for HPV DNA and antibody assessments, respectively. Injection-site and systemic adverse events (AEs) were monitored. Data were analyzed by country and vaccination group. Results 9vHPV vaccine prevented HPV-31/33/45/52/58–related persistent infection with 90.4%–100% efficacy across included countries. At month 7, ≥97.9% of participants seroconverted for each HPV type. Injection-site AEs occurred in 77.7%–83.1% and 81.9%–87.5% of qHPV and 9vHPV vaccine recipients in Study 001, respectively, and 62.4%–85.7% of girls/boys in Study 002; most were mild to moderate. Conclusions The 9vHPV vaccine is efficacious, immunogenic, and well tolerated in Asian participants. Data support 9vHPV vaccination programs in Asia. Abstract
Pichiafabianii, an uncommon yeast species recovered from clinical specimens, was documented as the cause of an infection in a 5-week-old female twin delivered at 25 and 3/7 weeks. She developed respiratory distress syndrome and necrotizing enterocolitis. At the time of the infection, she was febrile, thrombocytopenic, and still was requiring minimal ventilatory support. Blood cultures drawn on two consecutive days were positive for a germ tube negative yeast. Phenotypic methods including carbohydrate fermentations and assimilations (API 20C AUX) did not identify the yeast. Sequencing of D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rDNA was performed in one laboratory and sequencing a subunit of D2 performed in a second laboratory identified the yeast as P. fabianii. The organism was susceptible in vitro to amphotericin B, fluconazole and 5-fluorocytosinc. The patient responded to amphotericin B and removal of her vascular catheter. This case illustrates that there are an increasing number of fungi that may be pathogenic. Phenotypic tests may fail to identify them, emphasizing the need for commercially available, molecular based assays for identification.

Abstract
✓ Thirty-three intervertebral disc patients who otherwise would have been subjected to surgery were treated by injection with chymopapain. The pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, immunology, and chemical action of this enzyme, which specifically reacts with chondromucoproteins, are discussed. Results indicate that this method, although still experimental and unapproved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, may become a useful addition to the surgeon's armamentarium in the treatment of intervertebral disc disease.

Abstract
In the acquisition event of ordinary delayed matching to sample the monkey sees a sample, displaces it, and finds a food reward underneath; subsequently the retention test consists of a choice between that sample and a distractor, and the strength of the memory laid down by the acquisition event may be assessed by the correctness of choice at the retention test. The present experiments varied the acquisition events and examined the effect of those variations on normal and fornix-transected monkeys' memory. One variation was to proceed as normally but never to bait the sample at acquisition; this variation allowed assessment of the role of the food reward in ordinary matching. Another was to present the sample, baited and to be displaced, as normally, but to present also the distractor, baited but not requiring to be displaced, in a second acquisition event; this “push–match” variation allowed assessment of memory for the displacement. The main result from normal monkeys was that matching to unbaited samples was learned much faster than matching to baited samples. Following fornix transection, final performance levels in matching to baited and to unbaited samples were unimpaired but push–match showed a permanent deficit. These results support earlier indications that fornix-transected monkeys have normal sensory memory but are deficient in the memory of instrumental responses.

Abstract
AIM Faecal incontinence is a significant source of distress, and a permanent stoma is frequently offered to these patients. The antegrade colonic enema (ACE) procedure is an alternative approach to treat faecal incontinence. The long-term outcome remains unknown in adults with faecal incontinence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of the ACE procedure for incontinence in adults and its impact upon quality of life. METHOD All patients who underwent an ACE procedure between 1999 and 2009 were included. Clinical and demographic data and postoperative course were obtained from a review of medical records and databases. Each patient underwent a telephone interview. Quality of life was assessed using the GIQLI and SF36 scores, and faecal incontinence was evaluated using the Wexner score. RESULTS Seventy-five patients (54 females; 72%) were included. An ileal neoappendicostomy was performed in 68 patients (90%). The mean hospital stay was 9 days (range 6-24 days). Early complications occurred in four patients and late surgical complications (after 3 months) were observed in 12 (16%) patients. At a median follow up of 48 months, 64 (91%) were still performing enemas, and treatment was judged to be successful in 55 (86%) of 64 patients. The Wexner score was 3.4 ± 2.4, showing a significant reduction when compared with the preoperative value (P < 0.0001). Quality of life scores were in the range of a control population. CONCLUSION The ACE procedure is an effective long-term strategy in the treatment of faecal incontinence, with low and acceptable morbidity, and should be preferred before definitive colostomy.

Abstract
AIM Total/subtotal colectomy with ileorectal (IRA) or ileosigmoid (ISA) anastomosis is associated with various reported rates of morbidity, function and quality of life. Our object was to determine these end-points in a series of patients undergoing these operations in our institution. METHOD All patients who underwent IRA or ISA between 1994 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS A total of 320 patients (female 49%) with a median age of 54.2 (16.8-90.6) years underwent 338 IRA or ISA (in 18 patients the anastomosis was done twice) for inflammatory bowel disease (n = 96), polyposis (n = 95) and colorectal cancer (n = 97). Mortality and morbidity rates were 1.2% (n = 4) and 19.5% (n = 66) and 47 surgical complications (13.9%) occurred, including 26 (7.7%) cases of anastomotic leakage, leading to 23 re-operations. After a median follow-up of 49 (0-196) months, 262 patients still had a functioning anastomosis; 45 patients had died and 13 had a proctectomy. Information on function was obtained in 51.4% (133/259) of the cohort after a median follow-up of 77 (10-196) months. The mean (± standard deviation) rates of 24 h and nocturnal defaecation were 3.6 ± 2.4 and 0.5 ± 0.9. A disturbance of faecal or flatus continence occurred in 20% and 21% of patients. There was no case of faecal incontinence to solid stool. The mean SF-36 Physical and Mental Health Summary Scales were 46.3 ± 9.3 and 51.9 ± 9.3. Multivariate analysis showed that IRA and inflammatory bowel disease were both independently associated with poorer long-term function. CONCLUSION Colectomy with IRA or ISA is safe with low postoperative morbidity and mortality. The employment of IRA and inflammatory bowel disease appear to be independent negative factors on function in multivariate analysis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the climbing-specific finger endurance of climbers, rowers and aerobically leg trained athletes. Twenty-seven males aged 21.2 +/- 2.2 years (mean +/- s) volunteered for the study. The participants were intermediate rock climbers (n = 9), rowers (n = 9) and leg trained athletes (n = 9). Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was determined on climbing-specific finger apparatus. Endurance isometric exercise was performed at 40% MVC in three tests performed in a random order: (1) sustained exercise; (2) 6 s exercise, 4 s rest; and (3) 18 s exercise, 12 s rest. Pre- and post-exercise blood pressure and blood lactate concentration, together with post-exercise pain perception, were measured. The climbers had a significantly greater MVC (383 +/- 35.6 N) than the rowers (321 +/- 49.5 N, P = 0.007) and aerobically leg trained athletes (288 +/- 60.6 N, P = 0.001). There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of endurance times for any of the tests. In the test with 18 s exercise and 12 s rest, the climbers showed a significantly higher increase in blood lactate concentration, on average, than the rowers by 0.01-0.89 mmol x l(-1) (P = 0.006); there were no significant differences, on average, in the comparisons of climbers and the leg trained athletes and rowers and the leg trained athletes. There were no significant differences in the average changes in blood pressure from rest to post-exercise between any of the groups. Although the climbers had greater MVC on average than the other two groups, there were no significant differences in average endurance times amongthe groups. These findings suggest that training for rock climbing and participation in rock climbing may result in some specific adaptations. However, we acknowledge that this study is descriptive and there is the possibility that differences between groups could be attributed to self-selection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Duodenal adenomas develop in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis, incurring a risk of carcinoma. When this risk is high, surgery is indicated. The choice of surgical treatment can be difficult as evidence-based data are lacking. METHODS This is a systematic review of the literature on the non-medical management of duodenal lesions arising in the setting of familial adenomatous polyposis. Studies were identified through searching MEDLINE. Studies published between January 1965 and October 2009 were included. Data regarding number of subjects, complications, length of follow-up, recurrence rate and outcome were extracted. RESULTS Transduodenal resection does not differ from an endoscopic approach in terms of recurrence. Ampullectomy has limited application as only papillary lesions are amenable to treatment in this manner. Duodenectomy with pancreas preservation is preferable to pancreaticoduodenectomy unless malignancy is present, or cannot be excluded. CONCLUSION Surgery should be reserved for advanced or malignant polyps.

Abstract
Scedosporium apiospermum (Pseudallescheria boydii) is a ubiquitous saprophytic mold. It is considered an infrequent but important and emerging human pathogen, mostly in immunocompromised hosts. Otomycosis secondary to S. apiospermum is extremely rare. We report an 8-year-old immunocompetent male who developed otitis media and otitis externa from S. apiospermum, which was successful treated with combination of surgical debridement and topical clotrimazole therapy. A brief literature review of infections caused by S. apiospermum follows the case presentation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Before undergoing sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) for faecal incontinence (FI), patients are investigated with morphologic, dynamic and electrophysiologic tests. The purpose of our study was to evaluate their value in the selection of patients who may benefit most from neuromodulation. METHOD If temporary stimulation resulted in a good objective response, a permanent neuromodulator was implanted. Patients were reviewed at 3 months and then at 6 monthly intervals. Asked by telephone, patient's satisfaction was described as good, satisfactory or poor. RESULTS Forty-five consecutive patients (41 females, median age 59 years) with FI (Wexner 16.1 +/- 2.9) underwent SNS. Temporary stimulation was successful in 32 (71)% patients. At a median follow-up of 33 months, the neuromodulator remained in place in 25 (55%) patients, two do whom switched it off, leaving 23 (51%) with a functioning neuromodulator. There was no statistically significant difference between the characteristics (including manometry, ultrasound and electrophysiology) of patients undergoing implantation (n = 32) or not (n = 13) and those with or without a functioning stimulator (n = 23: n = 13). In the 23 patients with a functioning stimulator the result was good in 12, satisfactory in five and poor in six. There was no statistically significant difference in the patient characteristics between those with a good result (n = 12) and the remainder (n = 32). CONCLUSION The findings suggest that investigation for FI does not facilitate patient selection for SNS and cannot be used to predict outcome.

Abstract
Monkeys with ablation of lateral striate, prestriate or inferotemporal cortex were compared with unoperated controls in their ability to discriminate Munsell colours, or greys, of increasing difficulty. Whereas lateral striate or prestriate lesions centred on visual area V4 mildly impaired only the most difficult discriminations, inferotemporal ablation resulted in a severe impairment in the acquisition of colour discriminations. However, the ability to discriminate greys was much less affected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress mediates acinar injury in experimental acute pancreatitis (AP) and antioxidants are depleted in human AP. This study tests the hypothesis that exogenous antioxidant supplementation ameliorates experimental AP. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 groups (n = 5/group) and sacrificed at 72 h. AP was induced by 250 mg per 100 g body weight of 20% L-arginine hydrochloride in 0.15 mol/l sodium chloride. Group allocations were: group 1 (control) no intervention; group 2 AP; group 3 early multiple antioxidant (MAOX) intervention comprising 15 microg/kg selenium, 30 microg/kg ascorbate and 300 mg/kg N-acetylcysteine given at 6 and 30 h and group 4 the MAOX combination above given at 24 and 48 h. Endpoints were: serum amylase, antioxidant levels, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) protein and lung myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and histological assessment of pancreatic injury. RESULTS L-arginine induced AP characterised by oedema, neutrophil infiltration, acinar cell degranulation and elevated serum amylase. Early MAOX reduced pulmonary MPO and BAL protein and reduced acinar swelling, degranulation and pancreatic parenchymal infiltration by inflammatory cells. These features were absent when intervention was delayed. CONCLUSION In this model, early but not late antioxidant intervention ameliorates pancreatic and pulmonary injury.

Abstract
AIM Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is the only curative treatment for recurrent or persisting squamous cell carcinoma of the anus after radiochemotherapy. A vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous (VRAM) flap reduces perineal morbidity. The sexual life (SL) of women after APR is unknown. Aims of this study were to evaluate SF of women after APR. METHOD 47 women alive after APR performed between 1996 and 2007 were included. SL was evaluated using the female sexual function index (FSFI) score. RESULTS 29 (62%) women answered the questionnaire: 15 (52%) had a VRAM and 16 (55%) a colpectomy. Among the 21 patients with SL before surgery, 16 (76%) still had intercourse with a mean FSFI score of 19.5 ± 10.9 [4.8-36]. Main difficulties reported were troubles of lubrication, orgasm, and dyspareunia. Confection of a VRAM did not influence the recovery of SL (P = 0.717). Colpectomy reduced return of SL (P = 0.026). CONCLUSION Among women who had SL before APR, 76% still had sexual intercourse after. Colpectomy seems to reduce SL.

Abstract
✓ The classic clinical sequence in posterior fossa extradural hematoma is head injury, lucid interval, deterioration; the deterioration is usually terminated by death or surgical intervention. This report emphasizes a syndrome characterized by a double lucid interval in which the phase of deterioration terminates spontaneously with improvement. This is actually only a second lucid interval and can lead surgeons into a false sense of security since it is followed by deterioration, as the clot continues to enlarge. Four such cases are described in detail. The characteristics of the initial phase of deterioration are described and contrasted with those of the deterioration following the lucid interval in the classic supratentorial extradural hematoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe exacerbation during pregnancy of cerebellar hemangioblastoma in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. METHOD Case-report. A 21-year-old woman with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome was found on routine ocular examination to have severe papilledema 1 week after giving birth. RESULTS Immediate magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a large cerebellar cyst from hemangioblastoma causing cerebellar tonsillar herniation. Immediate neurosurgical intervention was life saving. CONCLUSION Worsening of intracranial hemangioblastoma during pregnancy in cases of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome should be realized and periodic neurologic and ophthalmologic observation is warranted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smartphones have revolutionised our demands for constant access to information. The usage of smartphones in the clinical setting is becoming widespread. The aim of our study was to assess smartphone ownership and usage across a cohort of interns. METHODS A voluntary novel questionnaire was distributed to interns in two university hospitals. Details regarding smartphone ownership and usage were assessed. Likert scales were utilised for analysis. RESULTS Sixty-one (74.4 %) interns responded to the survey. Sixty (98.4 %) owned a smartphone with iPhone(®) being the most popular (76.7 %). Fifty-five (91.6 %) interns have downloaded medical applications ('apps'), while 29 (52.3 %) reported paying for them. Regarding smartphone use on-call, 30 (50 %) interns agreed it aids diagnoses, 26 (43 %) agree it helped in interpreting laboratory values, 31 (51.7 %) agreed it helped in dosing of medication and 33 (55 %) agreed it was of assistance in medical emergency protocols. Forty-two (70 %), 42 (70 %) and 46 (76.7 %) interns agreed or strongly agreed smartphones have a positive influence on them in terms of levels of stress, confidence and level of knowledge, respectively. CONCLUSION Smartphone usage is widespread among our intern cohort. The introduction of hospital applications with local guidelines would be welcomed; however, this may require informed patient consent regarding their use.

Abstract
Ascorbate is found in high concentrations in the aqueous, lens and retina of a variety of animal species. Several functions have been proposed for this, including a vital role in aqueous secretion. We investigated the possible presence of ascorbate in the early embryonic chicken eye as a marker for the differentiation of the ciliary epithelium. Embryonic chicken eyes were processed for histochemical demonstration of ascorbate by silver staining. A strongly positive reaction was found in the interstitial matrix between the lens rudiment and the optic vesicle of the 2-day chicken embryo. By 3 days, with lens and optic cup separating from each other, the silver grains were concentrated in the vitreous cavity, primarily in a band-like configuration between the lens equator and the rim of the optic cup, which is the presumptive ciliary epithelium. A weaker reaction was seen in the lens vesicle and primitive neural retina. During the second and third day of incubation the optic vesicle is just beginning to expand. The appearance of ascorbic acid in the newly formed vitreous cavity at this time may indicate its importance in the biosynthesis of the matrix that is filling the expanding optic vesicle.
