Ivermectin toxicosis in a kitten

A 4-month-old female kitten developed generalized ataxia, mild tremors, weakness, incoordination, and miosis after receiving an injection of ivermectin (0.3 mg/kg of body weight, SC) for treatment of ear mite infestation. The kitten became comatose within 12 hours, and despite supportive treatment, died 7 days after administration of ivermectin. Caution should be exercised when this drug is administered parenterally to kittens.

Mobility of aniline, benzoic acid, and toluene in four soils and correlation with soil properties

Soil properties and retention mechanisms affecting the relative mobility of aniline, benzoic acid, and toluene in Cecil sandy loam (clayey, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Hapludults), Holdredge silt loam (fine-silty, mixed, mesic Typic Argiustolls), Sharpsburg silty clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Argiudolls), and Valentine fine sand (mixed, mesic Typic Ustipsamments) were delineated in laboratory studies. The effect of the synthetic organic compounds (SOCs) was also determined on effective organic campounds (SOCs) was also determined on effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) of the soils. Benzoic acid was most mobile of the SOCs but was retained in the Cecil soil by hydrogen bonds to Fe oxides. Toluene was least mobile and probably was hydrophobically sorbed to all soils. Aniline was electrostatically retained in protonated form to organic and inorganic exchange sites of the soils and reduced the ECEC of aniline-treated Holdredge and Sharpsburg soils.

Hepatic lobectomy in the dog. A comparison of stapling and ligation techniques

The left lateral hepatic lobe was removed in six dogs with a stapling instrument and in six dogs by blunt dissection and ligation. Both techniques were safe and effective. Lobectomy by dissection and ligation was slower and less complete than by stapling. Major intraoperative or postoperative hemorrhage did not occur with either method. Serum chemistry values were elevated after surgery in all dogs but did not differ significantly between treatment groups. Microscopic hemorrhage, necrosis, and inflammation of the lobectomy site were more pronounced after dissection and ligation than stapling.

The major causes of death in the Army and comparisons with the civilian population

Statistics of 881 British Army male non-operational deaths between 1980 and 1984 were analysed and comparisons made with civilian mortality for certain categories of deaths. Disease accounted for 32% and injury for 68% of the deaths. Road traffic accidents (RTAs) comprised 40% and ischaemic heart disease (IHD) 13% of the total. The overall Standardised Mortality Ratio (SMR) was 92. By comparison with the UK civil population serving members of the Regular Army suffered considerably less from disease deaths (SMR 58) with the exception of IHD (SMR 92), but more from injury deaths (SMR 135). RTA deaths had an SMR of 200. The review suggests that attention should be directed towards incidents causing RTAs and drowning. Action taken in peace may have relevance to survival on operations.
