Associations of beef calf wellness and body weight gain with internal location in a truck during transportation

Cattle transportation by commercial truck carrier is common in the United States, and often cattle are placed within 1 of 8 potential compartments within the truck for the journey. The objective of this research was to determine potential associations between animal wellness (as measured by ADG and health outcomes) during a relatively short backgrounding phase (46.6 +/- 8.5 d) and location within the truck during transit. Data from 21 loads (average calves per load = 101.5; average BW = 210.1 +/- 19.4 kg) were included in the analysis. For each shipment, calves were divided among 8 compartments within the trailer: nose on top deck (NOT), nose on bottom deck (NOB), bottom deck middle forward (BDF), bottom deck middle rear (BDR), rear on the bottom (ROB), top deck middle forward (TDF), top deck middle rear (TDR), and rear on the top deck (ROT). General logistic (health outcomes) and mixed (ADG) models were employed to analyze the data accounting for effects due to truck section as well as the hierarchical data structure of multiple arrival times, loads, and pens. Cattle in the ROT section had less short-term BW gains compared with NOT and tended (P < 0.10) to be less than NOB. Cattle in the forward sections (NOT, NOB) were less (P = 0.02) likely [odds ratio (OR): 0.67, 95% confidence limits (CL): 0.50, 0.94] to be treated at least once compared with cattle in the middle sections (TDF, TDR, TOP, BDF, BDR, BOT). Calves in compartments with 15 head or less tended (P < 0.10) to have reduced odds of being treated compared with cattle in compartments with 16 to 30 head (OR: 0.79, 95% CL: 0.60, 1.0) or greater than 31 head (OR: 0.73, 95% CL: 0.53, 1.0). Our current project reveals that the location within the truck may affect calf health and performance.

Phosphatase activity among Candida species and other yeasts isolated from clinical material

A group of 277 yeasts isolated from burned children and 14 reference strains were tested for phosphatase activity by using phenolphthalein phosphate substrates. Phosphatase activity was widely distributed among various species and strains representing seven genera. Candida albicans, which was the most common yeast isolated from clinical material, was notably absent in producing the enzyme, whereas Candida tropicalis was the most consistent, strong, and rapidly active phosphatase-producing organism. The characteristic enzyme activity of a selected isolate of C. tropicalis was demonstrated in the presence of concentrations of inorganic phosphate which inhibited enzyme activity of other species. The greater enzyme activity of C. tropicalis was not related to more rapid or greater cell growth or decrease in the pH of culture media. Extracellular constitutive heat-labile acid phosphatase was found in broth filtrates of C. tropicalis, C. krusei, and a strain of Staphylococcus aureus.

Incidence of yeasts and influence of nystatin on their control in a group of burned children

The incidence of yeasts in the oral cavity, rectum and urine of a population of 60 children hospitalized for treatment of acute second and third degree burns was approximately the same at the time of their admission as would be expected in healthy subjects. After hospitalization, the incidence of yeasts was reduced in the intestinal tract of acute patients who received nystatin orally but increased in the oral cavity. The majority of 418 yeasts were inhibited in vitro by less than 50 units/ml nystatin and only 6 yeasts were resistant to more than 3.1 mug/ml amphotericin B. The oral cavity appeared to act as a significant reservoir from which yeasts spread to cause or contribute to the deaths of 2 of 5 patients who died during the study.

Evaluation of media for selective isolation of yeasts from oral, rectal, and burn wound specimens

Six media were evaluated to determine their ability to isolate yeasts and inhibit bacteria. The media included the following: Snyder, Snyder tellurite, Sabouraud tellurite, Littman-gentamicin, molybdate, and Mycosel (BBL). Doses of mixed intestinal gram-negative bacilli and enterococci were most effectively inhibited by Snyder tellurite agar. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the most common bacterial contaminant of the other media. All six media were comparable in isolating yeasts while preventing the growth of the oral bacterial flora. The selection of a basal fungal growth medium for tellurite incorporation to inhibit bacteria but permit growth of yeasts was affected by pH. The bacteriostatic effect of tellurite was decreased with increasing pH of media while fungistatic action was increased. The arbitrary selection of Snyder and Littman agars to isolate yeast from burn wound cultures demonstrated the need to include a selective medium for these specimens. Blood, phenylethyl alcohol blood agar, and Columbia CN blood agar were all inadequate for isolating yeasts from burns. Growth of a variety of filamentous saprophytic and pathogenic dimorphic fungi grew adequately on four of five selective media tested.

Evaluation of three media for selective isolation of gram-positive bacteria from burn wounds

Three media, phenylethyl alcohol blood agar, esculin-mannitol agar, and Columbia CN blood agar, were studied for the selective isolation of gram-positive bacteria from swab cultures of burn wounds.

Isolation and characterization of corynebacteria from burned children

A total of 221 strains of corynebacteria were isolated and characterized by methods which included tests encompassing five schemes proposed for grouping cutaneous diphtheroids. Seventy-one strains (group I) were isolated from the hospital air in patient areas and from the normal skins of children admitted for reconstructive surgery of old healed burns and from the normal skins of nursing personnel. One hundred and fifty strains (group II) were isolated from various clinical specimens and from normal skins of a population of acutely burned children. The majority of the strains in group I were lipophilic and contained the largest number of fluorescent strains. Among the group II strains, there was a subgroup which was nonsusceptible to oxacillin, lincomycin, erythromycin, and kanamycin and also had in common the fermentation of glucose and galactose, reduction of both nitrate and nitrite, and growth on 40% bile agar. These strains were the most commonly recognized types isolated from acutely burned patients and possibly originated from the patient's intestinal tract. Data indicated that the air was not a means of transmission for these corynebacteria among acute patients. Corynebacteria were isolated from 11% of the burn wound cultures by using a selective medium but were found in 66% of the acute patients. Over 90% of the strains in groups I and II did not conform sufficiently with described characteristics of common human indigenous corynebacteria to be accurately speciated.
