Abstract
Versican belongs to the family of the large aggregating chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans located primarily within the extracellular matrix (ECM). Versican, like other members of its family, has unique N- and C-terminal globular regions, each with multiple motifs. A large glycosaminoglycan-binding region lies between them. This review will begin by outlining these structures, in the context of ECM proteoglycans. The diverse binding partners afforded to versican by virtue of its modular design will then be examined. These include ECM components, such as hyaluronan, type I collagen, tenascin-R, fibulin-1, and -2, fibrillin-1, fibronectin, P- and L-selectins, and chemokines. Versican also binds to the cell surface proteins CD44, integrin beta 1, epidermal growth factor receptor, and P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1. These multiple interactors play important roles in cell behaviour, and the roles of versican in modulating such processes are discussed.

Abstract
The Polycomb group (PcG) genes in Drosophila melanogaster are required for maintenance of correct spatial expression of homeotic genes, and their products are thought to form either a regulatory network or act as a multimeric complex. Recently, it has been suggested that because of homology between Polycomb (Pc) and Su(var)205, PcG genes encode chromatin proteins required for the maintenance of a determined state in chromatin. The polyhomeotic (ph) gene is a member of the PcG of genes. We present DNA sequence of a ph cDNA, which encodes a 169-kD protein with a single putative zinc finger, a serine/threonine-rich region, and has glutamine repeats, suggesting that ph is a DNA-binding protein. Polyclonal antisera directed against ph protein bind to approximately 80 sites on polytene chromosomes. Most of these sites appear to be the same as those recognized by antibodies to Pc protein. ph protein binds to insertion sites of constructs containing DNA from the bithoraxoid (bxd) region of the Bithorax complex, showing that ph binding to chromatin is DNA dependent. The same bxd constructs are recognized by Pc protein, strongly supporting the hypothesis that ph and Pc interact directly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We studied the feasibility, technical problems, safety, and effectiveness of percutaneous declotting of thrombosed native arteriovenous fistulae for hemodialysis. METHODS Between 1992 and 1998, 93 declotting procedures were performed in 73 consecutive upper limb native fistulae (forearm 56 and upper arm 17), and 162 procedures were performed in 78 prosthetic grafts using manual catheter-directed thrombo-aspiration, with or without previous urokinase infusion. Detection of restenosis by clinical surveillance led to redilation or stent placement. Rethrombosis in four forearm and six upper arm fistulae were treated by 20 further declottings by aspiration. RESULTS The initial success was 93% in the forearm and 76% in the upper arm (99% in grafts). The complications included one pulmonary embolism, one acute pseudoaneurysm, and one blood depletion requiring transfusion. Primary patency rates at one year were 49% in the forearm and 9% in the upper arm (14% in grafts). Secondary patency rates were 81 and 50% at one year, respectively (83% in grafts). Reinterventions were necessary every 19.6 months in the forearm and every 5.7 months in the upper arm (every 6.4 months in grafts, P < 0.05). Stents were placed in 11% of forearm fistulae and in 41% of upper arm fistulae (45% of grafts) for treatment of acute rupture (5 out of 19), stenosis recoil (6 out of 19), and early (< 6 months) recurring stenosis (8 out of 19). CONCLUSIONS The percutaneous declotting of forearm fistulae by manual catheter-directed thrombo-aspiration was effective in more than 90% of cases and yielded 50% primary and 80% secondary patency rates at one year. The results were poorer in upper arm fistulae. The need for maintenance reinterventions was three times smaller in forearm fistulae than in upper arm fistulae and grafts.

Abstract
Versican is a large extracellular chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan that belongs to the family of lecticans. Alternative splicing of versican generates at least four isoforms named V0, V1, V2, and V3. We show here that ectopic expression of versican V1 isoform induced mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) in NIH3T3 fibroblasts, and inhibition of endogenous versican expression abolished the MET in metanephric mesenchyme. MET in NIH3T3 cells was demonstrated by morphological changes and dramatic alterations in both membrane and cytoskeleton architecture. Molecular analysis showed that V1 promoted a "switch" in cadherin expression from N- to E-cadherin, resulting in epithelial specific adhesion junctions. V1 expression reduced vimentin levels and induced expression of occludin, an epithelial-specific marker, resulting in polarization of V1-transfected cells. Furthermore, an MSP (methylation-specific PCR) assay showed that N-cadherin expression was suppressed through methylation of its DNA promoter. Exogenous expression of N-cadherin in V1-transfected cells reversed V1's effect on cell aggregation. Reduction of E-cadherin expression by Snail transfection and siRNA targeting E-cadherin abolished V1-induced morphological alteration. Transfection of an siRNA construct targeting versican also reversed the changed morphology induced by V1 expression. Silencing of endogenous versican prevented MET of metanephric mesenchyme. Taken together, our results demonstrate the involvement of versican in MET: expression of versican is sufficient to induce MET in NIH3T3 fibroblasts and reduction of versican expression decreased MET in metanephric mesenchyme.

Abstract
Increasing the ecological relevance of studies relating to the performance of organisms has been a central issue for functional biologists over the last few years. Of particular concern are changes in performance throughout the life cycle as selective forces act differently on various life stages. We addressed this issue experimentally by following ontogenic variations in the escape performance of crickets threatened by artificial predatory signals. We measured their performance under natural settings, which is a necessary approach yet one that is undocumented in insects. We analysed numeric film sequences obtained using a high-speed video camera at 1000 frames s(-1) to quantify wild cricket performance and behaviour in the field. We detected significant differences in cricket escape performance throughout ontogeny. Escape performances were higher in juvenile crickets than older instars. Complementary behavioural measurements for escaping crickets suggest that these variations may be related to the lower predatory risk perceived by large adults than by juveniles. We expect that our analysis of size-refuge will also improve our understanding in the development of performance, given its importance in community and population ecology theories.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Juvenile crickets suffer high rates of mortality by natural predators that they can detect using extremely sensitive air-sensing filiform hairs located on their cerci. Although a huge amount of knowledge has accumulated on the physiology, the neurobiology and the biomechanics of this sensory system in adults, the morphological and functional aspects of air sensing have not been as well studied in earlier life history stages. Using scanning electronic microscopy, we performed a survey of all cercal filiform hairs in seven instars of the wood cricket (Nemobius sylvestris). Statistical analyses allowed us to quantify profound changes in the number, the length and the distribution of cercal hairs during development. Of particular importance,we found a fivefold increase in hair number and the development of a bimodal length-frequency distribution of cercal hairs from the second instar onwards. Based on theoretical estimations of filiform hair population coding, we found that the cercal system is functional for a wide range of frequencies of biologically relevant oscillatory flows, even from the first instar. As the cricket develops, the overall sensitivity of the cercal system increases as a result of the appearance of new hairs, but the value of the best tuned frequency remains fixed between 150 and 180 Hz after the second instar. These frequencies nicely match those emitted by natural flying predators, suggesting that the development of the cercal array of hairs may have evolved in response to such signals.

Abstract
Primary oxalosis is a rare congenital disorder. The excessive oxalate biosynthesis induces deposits in many organs, particularly in kidney and bone. The late onset of primary oxalosis is reported in a 50-year-old man. His chronic renal failure was treated by maintenance hemodialysis for 3 years. He then developed a diffuse bone disease with osteosclerosis and roentgenographic features of hyperparathyroidism. A parathyroidectomy was performed, with debatable improvement of bone lesions. Laboratory results and histologic and histomorphometric studies before and after parathyroidectomy suggest a double histopathogenetic mechanism for this bone disease: renal osteodystrophy and massive bone oxalate deposits. Such deposits may induce both a heterogeneous osteosclerosis with dense metaphyseal bands and histologic bone lesions similar to those of hyperparathyroidism. The crystalline deposits induce in the bone tissue a granulomatous macrophagic reaction. These macrophages are unable to phagocytize the crystals and may be involved in active bone resorption. Bone lesions of oxalosis occur in patients with chronic renal failure, and hyperparathyroidism has a worsening role.

Abstract
We have detected versican, a member of the large chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, and its degraded C-terminal G3 fragments in human plasma and observed that the versican G3 domain promoted blood coagulation. Silencing G3 expression with small interfering RNA reduced the effect of G3 on coagulation. Plasma coagulation assays suggest that G3 enhances coagulation irrespective of its actions on platelets and white blood cells. To examine how versican affected blood coagulation, we used normal human plasma and different types of coagulation factor-deficient plasmas. The experiments indicated that versican enhanced coagulation through the extrinsic pathway, and that Factor VII was the target molecule. FVII activity assays showed that G3 activated FVII in the presence of plasma but not with purified FVII directly. Yeast two-hybrid, immunoprecipitation, and gel co-migration assays showed that G3 interacted with the tissue factor pathway inhibitor-1 (TFPI-1). TFPI-1 activity assays suggested that G3 inhibited TFPI-1 activity, allowing FVIIa and FXa to facilitate the coagulation process. G3-induced blood coagulation was further confirmed with a mouse model in a real-time manner. Taken together, these results indicate that versican may represent a new target for the development of therapies against atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Mechanically assisted crevice corrosion (MACC) has been associated with implant failure in vivo and is a serious concern in numerous metallic implant systems. Stainless steel medical devices may be subjected to fretting and crevice corrosion in the human body as are titanium and CoCrMo alloys due to the presence of a passive oxide film on their surface. One mechanism of MACC that has not been clearly identified and studied is fretting-initiated crevice corrosion (FICC) of stainless steel where an initial fretting event can initiate a rapid propagating crevice corrosion process even when fretting has ceased. FICC pin-on-disk experiments were performed at varying potential conditions and duration of fretting to explore the role of potential and fretting duration on the initiation of crevice corrosion. Triggering of a propagating crevice corrosion reaction on stainless steel at 250 mV vs Ag/AgCl/KCl (saturated) in PBS solution required only 2 s (2 cycles at 1 Hz) of fretting. Crevice corrosion continued to propagate under a 1.8 mm diameter pin with only 100 μm of direct contact, dissolving in both the depth and width dimension away from the fretting contact while the currents rose from 0.2 μA to 15 μA within 5 min. Three different potential-dependent FICC regions were identified that included unstable crevice corrosion (50 mV and above), metastable crevice corrosion (-100 mV to 0 mV) and stable fretting corrosion (between -500 mV and -150 mV). Crevice corrosion can be induced by fretting at potentials as low as -100 mV. Below -100 mV, there was no FICC, but rather fretting corrosion stopped immediately after fretting ceased and returned to a stable baseline current. Metastable FICC was shown at potentials between -100 mV and 0 mV, when the crevice corrosion current gradually decreased over several seconds or longer after fretting ceased. Self-sustained, unstable crevice corrosion started at 50 mV, where prior to fretting the currents were low, and after just a few cycles of fretting the crevice current rose rapidly and continued to increase after fretting stopped. Increase of potential increased the susceptibility of stainless steel to FICC. Scanning electron microscopy and digital optical microscopy revealed pitting and crevice corrosion on samples at -100 mV and higher potentials, where FICC was developing. By removing the oxide film, fretting motion significantly facilitates the critical crevice solution development, lowering the critical crevice potential and decreasing the initiation time for crevice corrosion. These results indicate that fretting initiated crevice corrosion may affect the performance of stainless steel in vivo. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: AISI 316L stainless steel has been widely used as a metallic biomaterial for orthopaedic, spinal, dental and cardiovascular implants. Crevice corrosion has been a serious concern for stainless steel implants. For the first time we demonstrated and systematically studied the process of fretting-initiated crevice corrosion (FICC) in 316L stainless steel in simulated physiological solution of phosphate buffered saline. By removing the oxide film, fretting motion significantly facilitates the critical crevice solution development, lowering the critical crevice potential and decreasing the initiation time for crevice corrosion. Our findings indicate fundamental differences between the FICC mechanism and conventional crevice corrosion theory, showing that fretting can play a significant role in the initiation of crevice corrosion of stainless steel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mechanically assisted crevice corrosion of modular tapers continues to be a concern in total joint arthroplasties. A surgical factor that may affect taper fretting corrosion during cyclic loading is seating load magnitude. In this study, modular head-neck taper junctions were seated, capturing load-displacement, over a range of axially oriented loads, and electrochemical and micromotion data were captured during short-term incremental cyclic fretting corrosion (ICFC) tests. The hypothesis is low seating loads result in greater motion and fretting corrosion in ICFC tests. The effect of assembly load on pull-off force post-ICFC testing was also evaluated. METHODS The study employed custom-built test fixtures which measured head-neck micromotion and an electrochemical chamber to monitor electrochemical reactions. Head-neck motion measurements were captured using 2 noncontact differential variable reluctance transducers mounted to the head. Seating experiments ranged from 1000 to 8000 N. RESULTS Significant differences due to seating loads were reported in seating displacement, ICFC subsidence, and fretting current at 4000 N cyclic load. Seating load decreased but did not eliminate currents. Fretting onset load remained fixed (approximately 1200 N) for tapers seated above 2000 N. Fretting subsidence was negligible for seating loads of 4000 N or higher, and increased subsidence was observed below 4000 N. CONCLUSION This short-term test method evaluated the acute performance of modular implants which were assembled under various loads and demonstrated the link between seating loads, fretting motions, and electrochemical reactions. While increased seating loads reduced fretting corrosion and taper subsidence, it did not prevent fretting corrosion even at 8 kN seating.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mechanically-assisted crevice corrosion of modular tapers continues to be a concern in total joint replacements. Surgical factors that may affect taper seating mechanics include seating load magnitude and load orientation. Seating mechanics is defined as the seating load versus displacement behavior. In this study, mixed-alloy (CoCrMo/Ti-6Al-4V) modular head-neck 5°40' taper junctions were seated over a range of axially-oriented loads and off-axis orientations, capturing load-displacement during seating. The goals of the study were to assess the effects of seating load magnitude and load orientation on seating mechanics and correlate those findings with the taper pull-off load. METHODS A testing fixture measured head-neck seating displacement as the load was quasistatically applied. Motion was captured using two non-contact differential variable reluctance transducers which were mounted to the neck targeting the head. Seating experiments ranged from 1000 N to 8000 N. Load orientation ranged from 0° to 20° at 4000 N. RESULTS Seating load-displacement behavior at different seating loads showed a consistent characteristic behavior. Testing demonstrated increased seating displacement with seating load. Pull-off loads increased with seating load and were approximately 44% of the seating load across the range of seating loads investigated. Seating load orientation up to 20° had no significant effect on seating displacement and taper pull-off load. CONCLUSION Increased seating load magnitude increased seating displacement, work of seating and pull-off loads in mixed-alloy 5°40' head-neck tapers. Altering load orientation up to 20° off-axis had no significant effect. Direct measurements of seating mechanics provides insights into the locking of taper junctions.

Abstract
Assembly of a femoral head onto the stem remains non-standardized. The literature shows altering mechanical conditions during seating affects taper strength and lower assembly load may increase fretting corrosion during cyclic tests. This suggests overall performance may be affected by head assembly method. The purpose of this test was to perform bench-top studies to determine influence of peak force magnitude, load rate, and compliance of the system's support structure on initial stability of the taper. Custom manufactured CoCrMo femoral heads and Ti-6Al-4V taper analog samples were assembled with varying peak force magnitudes (2-10.1 kN), load rates (quasi-static vs impaction), and system compliance (rigid vs compliant). A clinically-relevant system compliance design was based off of force data collected during a cadaver impaction study. Tensile loads were then applied to disassemble the taper and quantify initial taper stability. Results indicated that taper stability (assessed by disassembly forces) increased linearly with assembly force and load rate did not have a significant effect on taper stability. When considering system compliance, a 42%-50% larger input energy, dependent on assembly force, was required in the compliant group to achieve a comparable impaction force to the rigid group. Even when this impaction force was achieved, the correlation between the coefficient, defined as distraction force divided by assembly load, was significantly reduced for the compliant test group. The compliant setup was intended to simulate a surgical scenario where patient and surgical factors may influence the resulting compliance. Based on results, surgical procedure and patient variables may have a significant effect on initial taper stability.

Abstract
The role of various olfactory and visual stimuli was studied in host-plant finding by the asparagus fly Plioreocepta poeciloptera (Schrank), a monophagous monovoltine tephritid causing serious damage to asparagus spears. Volatiles released by asparagus plants were extracted by diethyl ether after cryotrapping concentration, and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twelve of the 13 compounds identified were tested using electroantennography to measure the response of the fly. Behavioural response was analysed using two different flight tunnels according to circadian rhythm, age and sex of adults, presence of the plant and of different coloured lures, presence of a male congener, or exposure to four pure asparagus odour compounds that elicited responses in electroantennography, i.e. hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol and decanal. Data showed that males locate the host plant more quickly than females. Females are attracted mainly by the blend of plant odour and male pheromone. Both sexes respond to a complex of stimuli only during the afternoon. These findings will be helpful in developing new and effective approaches to control this pest insect.

Abstract
During the last few years, articular symptoms have been reported in chronic renal failure patients on maintenance haemodialysis. A prospective study of arthropathies of the limbs was conducted in 73 such patients: 20 had experienced periarthritis, 32 had tendinous calcifications (3 or more in 16 cases), 29 had destructive arthropathies (especially of the hands) and 10 had calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition. The periarthritis attacks were associated with the presence of tendinous calcifications. The destructive arthropathies could be due to calcium apatite microcrystal deposition, but the study provided no direct evidence of this mechanism. However, the pattern of erosive lesions, their location and their possible association with tendinous calcifications in the same joint were suggestive of calcium apatite deposition. Calcium pyrophosphate deposition, which affected the oldest patients, did not seem to be due to chronic renal failure treated with dialysis. The most important arthropathies were found in patients who had been haemodialysed for a long time, although the correlation was not statistically significant. The dialysis pattern did not seem to influence the articular disorders. There were more cases of calcification and periarthritis among patients whose phosphocalcium product (in mg) exceeded 6000, but the difference with other patients was not statistically significant. Periarthritis and arthropathies are truly disabling for these patients.

Abstract
The formation of two-dimensional oxide dodecagonal quasicrystals as well as related complex approximant phases was recently reported in thin films derived from BaTiO3 or SrTiO3 perovskites deposited on (111)-oriented Pt single crystals. Here, we use an all-thin-film approach in which the single crystal is replaced by a 10 nm thick Pt(111) buffer layer grown by molecular beam epitaxy on an Al2O3(0001) substrate. An ultra-thin film of SrTiO3 was subsequently deposited by pulsed laser deposition. The film stacking and structure are fully characterized by diffraction and microscopy techniques. We report the discovery of two new complex phases obtained by reduction of this system through high temperature annealing under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The formation of a new large square approximant with a lattice parameter equal to 44.4 Å is evidenced by low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Additionally, a new 2D hexagonal approximant phase with a lattice parameter of 28 Å has been observed depending on the preparation conditions. Both phases can be described by two different tilings constructed with the same basic square, triangle and rhombus tiles possessing a common edge length of about 6.7 Å. Using the tiling built from high resolution STM images, we propose an atomic model for each approximant which accounts for the experimental observations. Indeed, the STM images simulated using these models are found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental ones, the bright protrusions being attributed to the topmost Sr atoms. In addition our theoretical approach shows that the adhesion of the oxide layer is rather strong (-0.30 eV Å-2). This is attributed to charge transfer, from the most electropositive elements (Sr and Ti) to the most electronegative ones (Pt and O), and to hybridization with Pt-states. Density of states calculations indicate differences in the electronic structure of the two approximants, suggesting different chemical and physical properties. This all-thin-film approach may be useful to explore the formation of complex two-dimensional oxide phases in other metal-oxide combinations.

Abstract
Based on our experience of the ethnopsychiatric consultation directed by Tobie Nathan in Paris, we try to define the adaptations of the therapeutic setting necessary, according to him, in a transcultural situation, and by whom we can be inspired (work-group, participation of a translator, mobilisation of the traditional etiological interpretations). Then, we study the clinical case of a young Algerian girl living in Belgium. We analyze her acute delirious psychosis following the conceptions of Tobie Nathan: the particular situation of migrant children would be a proneness for the splitting of the ego. At least we show how important is in the psychotherapy the restitution of the original cultural framework.

Abstract
From February 1980 to February 1983, 55 patients with chronic renal failure were put on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Eighty-four episodes of peritonitis occurred., i.e one episode every 9.9 months of treatment. Since staphylococci accounted for 58% of the germs identified, intraperitoneal therapy with a penicillin M was instituted while dialysis was continued through chambers. Cure was obtained in 85.7% of all episodes, either with the penicillin M alone (57% of the cases) or after adjustment of the antibiotic therapy to bacteriological results (28.6% of the cases). Dialysis was discontinued in 10 patients (18%) on account of the peritonitis. The duration of hospital stay for peritonitis was 3.6 days per patient per year. These results were compared with those obtained by other groups. The advantages of penicillin M are its ease of administration, its narrow spectrum and high activity against the pathogens most commonly encountered, and its very low toxicity.
