CLO19-037: Reducing the Duration, Incidence and Severity of Mucosal Injury Due to Cancer Radiation therapy (RT); Positive Randomized Phase 2b Trial Results With GC4419 (Avasopasem Manganese), a Small Molecule Superoxide (SO) Dismutase (SOD) Mimetic. Abstract
Introduction: RT-induced SO contributes to initiation of mucosal injury; eg, oral mucositis (OM) and esophagitis. GC4419 specifically mimics SOD’s dismutation of SO to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), interdicting OM initiation. GC4419 reduced RT-severe OM (SOM) in a hamster cheek pouch model, and protected mucosa and other normal tissues from radiation-induced injury in other animal models. In a published phase 1b/2a open-label trial (Anderson et al, IJROBP, 1 Feb 2018), GC4419 attenuated SOM in patients (Pts) receiving intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) plus concurrent cisplatin (CDDP) for locally advanced head & neck cancer (HNC). Objectives: Determine whether GC4419 reduces duration, incidence, & severity of SOM. Methods: Pts with locally advanced oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer; definitive or postoperative intensity-modulated (IM)RT (approximately 70 Gy [>50 Gy to > 2 oral sites]) plus CDDP (weekly or q3wk) were randomized (stratification: tumor HPV status, CDDP schedule) to 30 or 90 mg of GC4419, or placebo (PBO), 60-minute IV infusion, M–F, ending <60 minutes before IMRT delivered in 35 fractions over 7 weeks. WHO grade OM was assessed by trained evaluators biw during IMRT & qwk for up to 8 wks after IMRT. Primary endpoint: duration of SOM. Efficacy was tested for each active dose vs PBO (ITT population) by a sequential, conditional approach (2-sided alpha, 0.05). Results: 223 pts (44 sites): 90 mg (n=76), 30 mg (n=73), or PBO (n=74). Baseline patient and tumor characteristics and treatment delivery were balanced. Efficacy: At 90 mg GC4419 vs PBO, duration of SOM was significantly reduced (median, 1.5 vs 19 d; P=.024). SOM incidence (43% vs 65%; P=.009), and grade 4 incidence (16% vs 30%; P=.045) also improved. There were intermediate improvements with 30 mg. Safety was comparable across arms; no significant GC4419-specific toxicity; other known toxicities of IMRT/CDDP were not increased. Conclusions: GC4419 demonstrated a significant, clinically meaningful reduction of SOM duration, and dose-dependent improvements in other SOM parameters, with acceptable safety. A confirmatory phase 3 trial (NCT03689712) is in progress. Clinical trials to reduce RT-related esophagitis are also planned.

Abstract
In this paper we report the experimental implementation of a theoretically proposed technique for creating a photoionized plasma in the laboratory using x-ray line radiation. Using a Sn laser plasma to irradiate an Ar gas target, the photoionization parameter, ξ=4πF/N_{e}, reached values of order 50ergcms^{-1}, where F is the radiation flux in ergcm^{-2}s^{-1}. The significance of this is that this technique allows us to mimic effective spectral radiation temperatures in excess of 1 keV. We show that our plasma starts to be collisionally dominated before the peak of the x-ray drive. However, the technique is extendable to higher-energy laser systems to create plasmas with parameters relevant to benchmarking codes used to model astrophysical objects.

Abstract
The collisional (or free-free) absorption of soft x rays in warm dense aluminium remains an unsolved problem. Competing descriptions of the process exist, two of which we compare to our experimental data here. One of these is based on a weak scattering model, another uses a corrected classical approach. These two models show distinctly different behaviors with temperature. Here we describe experimental evidence for the absorption of 26-eV photons in solid density warm aluminium (T_{e}≈1 eV). Radiative x-ray heating from palladium-coated CH foils was used to create the warm dense aluminium samples and a laser-driven high-harmonic beam from an argon gas jet provided the probe. The results indicate little or no change in absorption upon heating. This behavior is in agreement with the prediction of the corrected classical approach, although there is not agreement in absolute absorption value. Verifying the correct absorption mechanism is decisive in providing a better understanding of the complex behavior of the warm dense state.

Abstract
Abstract
Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is released from tumor tissue into the blood, carries tumor specific genetic alterations, and can be analyzed through noninvasive "liquid biopsy" approaches to identify genetic alterations in cancer patients. Liquid biopsies offer a considerable advantage as they may eliminate the need for invasive tissue biopsies and allow for the detection of alterations in multiple metastatic lesions throughout the course of therapy. However, the fraction of ctDNA obtained from a blood sample is often very low (<1.0%) and can be difficult to detect. Additionally, most methods to evaluate circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) interrogate single hot spot mutations or few genetic alterations. The next generation of ctDNA assays must interrogate multiple gene regions from a single sample with high precision and accuracy and need to evaluate all forms of actionable genomic alterations including point mutations, amplifications, and translocations. To address these issues, we have developed a ctDNA approach called PlasmaSelect to detect somatic sequence mutations, amplifications and translocations at low allele frequencies in the circulation of cancer patients. Utilizing digital genomic approaches, PlasmaSelect achieves high sensitivity and specificity while interrogating >250,000 nucleotides spanning 63 well-established cancer genes. In addition to sequence mutations in the entire coding region of 18 genes and the exons of 40 genes that are frequently mutated in cancer, PlasmaSelect also performs a comprehensive genomic analysis of amplifications in 57 genes and translocations in 10 genes significant in cancer tumorigenesis. To evaluate the PlasmaSelect approach, we performed dilution series using tumor-derived DNA, containing well-characterized somatic mutations, in the presence of wild-type DNA. PlasmaSelect was able to detect genetic alterations with high specificity and a lower level of detection of 0.10% for sequence mutations and translocations, as well as a focal amplification of ERBB2 with a lower level of detection of 0.20%. We evaluated the clinical utility of PlasmaSelect for detection of genetic alterations in the plasma and matched tissue biopsy specimens from late stage cancer patients. These analyses demonstrated high concordance between the somatic sequence mutations, amplifications, and translocations identified in the tumor sample and those identified directly in the plasma, including alterations in both driver genes as well as those related to acquired resistance to targeted therapies. PlasmaSelect provides a non-invasive platform to enable liquid biopsy detection of clinically relevant genetic alterations across a large number of genomic loci.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE It is generally accepted that reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging molecules or antioxidants exert health-promoting effects and thus their consumption as food additives and nutraceuticals has been greatly encouraged. Antioxidants may be beneficial in situations of subclinical deficiency and increased demand or acutely upon high-dose infusion. However, to date, there is little clinical evidence for the long-term benefit of most antioxidants. Alarmingly, recent evidence points even to health risks, in particular for supplements of lipophilic antioxidants. RECENT ADVANCES The biological impact of ROS depends not only on their quantities but also on their chemical nature, (sub)cellular and tissue location, and the rates of their formation and degradation. Moreover, ROS serve important physiological functions; thus, inappropriate removal of ROS may cause paradoxical reductive stress and thereby induce or promote disease. CRITICAL ISSUES Any recommendation on antioxidants must be based on solid clinical evidence and patient-relevant outcomes rather than surrogate parameters. FUTURE DIRECTIONS Such evidence-based use may include site-directed application, time-limited high dosing, (functional) pharmacological repair of oxidized biomolecules, and triggers of endogenous antioxidant response systems. Ideally, these approaches need guidance by patient stratification through predictive biomarkers and possibly imaging modalities.

Abstract
Since the observation of the first brown dwarf in 1995, numerous studies have led to a better understanding of the structures of these objects. Here we present a method for studying material resistivity in warm dense plasmas in the laboratory, which we relate to the microphysics of brown dwarfs through viscosity and electron collisions. Here we use X-ray polarimetry to determine the resistivity of a sulphur-doped plastic target heated to Brown Dwarf conditions by an ultra-intense laser. The resistivity is determined by matching the plasma physics model to the atomic physics calculations of the measured large, positive, polarization. The inferred resistivity is larger than predicted using standard resistivity models, suggesting that these commonly used models will not adequately describe the resistivity of warm dense plasma related to the viscosity of brown dwarfs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The NHS Health Check Programme was introduced in 2009 to improve primary prevention of coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes and chronic kidney disease; however, there has been debate regarding the impact. We present a retrospective evaluation of Leicester City Clinical Commissioning Group. METHODS Data are reported on diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, high risk of type 2 diabetes and high risk of cardiovascular disease. Data on management following the Health Check are also reported. RESULTS Over a 5-year period, 53 799 health checks were performed, 16 388 (30%) people were diagnosed with at least one condition when diagnosis of being at high risk of cardiovascular disease was defined as ≥20%. This figure increased to 43% when diagnosis of high cardiovascular risk ≥10% was included. Of the 3063 (5.7%) individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, 54% were prescribed metformin and 26% were referred for structured education. Of the 5797 (10.8%) individuals diagnosed at high risk of cardiovascular disease (≥20%), 64% were prescribed statins. CONCLUSIONS A high proportion of new cases of people at risk of cardiovascular disease were identified by the NHS Health Check Programme. Data suggest that this has translated into appropriate preventative measures.

Fast-electron refluxing effects on anisotropic hard-x-ray emission from intense laser-plasma interactions. Phys Rev E 2015; 91:033107. Abstract
Fast-electron generation and dynamics, including electron refluxing, is at the core of understanding high-intensity laser-plasma interactions. This field is itself of strong relevance to fast ignition fusion and the development of new short-pulse, intense, x-ray, γ-ray, and particle sources. In this paper, we describe experiments that explicitly link fast-electron refluxing and anisotropy in hard-x-ray emission. We find the anisotropy in x-ray emission to be strongly correlated to the suppression of refluxing. In contrast to some previous work, the peak of emission is directly along the rear normal to the target rather than along either the incident laser direction or the specular reflection direction.

Abstract
The ventilatory CO2 chemoreflex is inherently low in inbred Brown Norway (BN) rats compared with other strains, including inbred Dahl salt-sensitive (SS) rats. Since the brain stem expression of various pH-sensitive ion channels may be determinants of the CO2 chemoreflex, we tested the hypothesis that there would be fewer pH-sensitive K(+) channel-expressing cells in BN relative to SS rats within brain stem sites associated with respiratory chemoreception, such as the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), but not within the pre-Bötzinger complex region, nucleus ambiguus or the hypoglossal motor nucleus. Medullary sections (25 μm) from adult male and female BN and SS rats were stained with primary antibodies targeting TASK-1, Kv1.4, or Kir2.3 K(+) channels, and the total (Nissl-stained) and K(+) channel immunoreactive (-ir) cells counted. For both male and female rats, the numbers of K(+) channel-ir cells within the NTS were reduced in the BN compared with SS rats (P < 0.05), despite equal numbers of total NTS cells. In contrast, we found few differences in the numbers of K(+) channel-ir cells among the strains within the nucleus ambiguus, hypoglossal motor nucleus, or pre-Bötzinger complex regions in both male and female rats. However, there were no predicted functional mutations in each of the K(+) channels studied comparing genomic sequences among these strains. Thus we conclude that the relatively selective reductions in pH-sensitive K(+) channel-expressing cells in the NTS of male and female BN rats may contribute to their severely blunted ventilatory CO2 chemoreflex.

Abstract
The beauty to up quark coupling constant |V(ub)| can be extracted from B → ρ e+ ν(e) combined with the form factors for D → K* e+ ν(e) and B → V ℓ+ ℓ- and D → ρ e+ ν(e). Using the entire CLEO-c ψ(3770) → DD event sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 818 pb(-1) and approximately 5.4×10(6) DD events, we measure the form factors for the decays D0 → ρ- e+ ν(e) and D+ → ρ0 e+ ν(e) for the first time and the branching fractions with improved precision. A four-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit determines the form factor ratios to be V(0)/A1(0)=1.48±0.15±0.05 and A2(0)/A1(0)=0.83±0.11±0.04. Assuming Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity, the known D meson lifetimes, and our measured branching fractions we obtain the form factor normalizations A1(0), A2(0), and V(0). We also present a measurement of the branching fraction for D+ → ω e+ ν(e) with improved precision.

Abstract
We present data on emission of K-shell radiation from Ti foils irradiated with subpicosecond pulses of second harmonic radiation (527 nm) from the TARANIS laser system at intensities of up to 10(18) W cm(-2). The data are used to demonstrate that a resonance absorption type mechanism is responsible for absorption of the laser light and to estimate fast electron temperatures of 30-60 keV that are in broad agreement with expectation from models of absorption for a steep density gradient. Data taken with resin-backed targets are used to demonstrate clear evidence of electron refluxing even at the modest fast electron temperatures inferred.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The single dose cardioplegia technique for myocardial protection during congenital heart surgery is a viable alternative to multidose protocols. METHODS Thirty-four pediatric patients with aortic cross clamp times greater than 90 minutes were grouped by modified adult (MA) multidose solution or del Nido (dN) single dose solution. Also, data from eight patients where the cross clamp times were greater than two hours on one dose of dN solution were included. RESULTS In the 90-minute plus arm of the study, there were no significant differences between the groups when comparing the risk adjustment for congenital heart surgery (RACHS) (p=0.6), cardiopulmonary bypass times (CPB) (p=0.5), aortic cross camp times (p=0.5), weights (p=0.7) and number of intraoperative exogenous blood units (p=0.5). There were significant differences between the groups (p<0.05) in the number of cardioplegia doses and with perioperative glucose levels. In the greater than two hours group, the incidence of complete heart block (CHB) was 0.125% and there were no deaths or mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices used. CONCLUSION del Nido cardioplegia solution is a reasonable tool for myocardial protection during congenital heart surgery that significantly decreased the number of cardioplegic interventions and perioperative glucose values in our study groups.

Observation of the h(c)(1P) Using e+ e- collisions above the DD threshold. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2011; 107:041803. Abstract
Using 586 pb(-1) of e+ e- collision data at E(c.m.) = 4170 MeV, produced at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring collider and collected with the CLEO-c detector, we observe the process e+ e- → π+ π- h(c)(1P). We measure its cross section to be 15.6±2.3±1.9±3.0 pb, where the third error is due to the external uncertainty on the branching fraction of ψ(2S) → π0 h(c)(1P), which we use for normalization. We also find evidence for e+ e- → ηh(c)(1P) at 4170 MeV at the 3σ level and see hints of a rise in the e+ e- → π+ π- h(c)(1P) cross section at 4260 MeV.

Abstract
Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) are prevalent in field-grown tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) production in Georgia. Typical TYLCV symptoms were observed during varietal trials in fall 2009 and 2010 to screen genotypes against TYLCV at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA. However, foliar symptoms atypical of TYLCV including interveinal chlorosis, purpling, brittleness, and mottling on upper and middle leaves and bronzing and intense interveinal chlorosis on lower leaves were also observed. Heavy whitefly (Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), B biotype) infestation was also observed on all tomato genotypes. Preliminary tests (PCR and nucleic acid hybridization) in fall 2009 indicated the presence of TYLCV, TSWV, Cucumber mosaic virus, and Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV); all with the exception of ToCV have been reported in Georgia. Sixteen additional symptomatic leaf samples were randomly collected in fall 2010 and the preliminary results from 2009 were used to guide testing. DNA and RNA were individually extracted using commercially available kits and used for PCR testing for ToCV, TYLCV, and TSWV. Reverse transcription (RT)-PCR with ToCV CP gene specific primers (4) produced approximately 750-bp amplicons from nine of the 16 leaf samples. Four of the nine CP gene amplicons were purified and directly sequenced in both directions. The sequences were 99.4 to 100.0% identical with each other (GenBank Accession Nos. HQ879840 to HQ879843). They were 99.3 to 99.5%, 97.2 to 97.5%, and 98.6 to 98.9% identical to ToCV CP sequences from Florida (Accession No. AY903448), Spain (Accession No. DQ136146), and Greece (Accession No. EU284744), respectively. The presence of ToCV was confirmed by amplifying a portion of the HSP70h gene using the primers HSP-1F and HSP-1R (1). RT-PCR produced approximately 900-bp amplicons in the same nine samples. Four HSP70h gene amplicons were purified and directly sequenced in both directions. The sequences were 99.4 to 99.7% identical to each other (Accession Nos. HQ879844 to HQ879847). They were 99.2 to 99.5%, 98.0 to 98.4%, and 98.9 to 99.3% identical to HSP70h sequences from Florida (Accession No. AY903448), Spain (Accession No. DQ136146), and Greece (Accession No. EU284744), respectively. TYLCV was also detected in all 16 samples by PCR using degenerate begomovirus primers PAL1v 1978 and PARIc 496 (3) followed by sequencing. TSWV was also detected in two of the ToCVinfected samples by RT-PCR with TSWV N gene specific primers (2) followed by sequencing. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the natural occurrence of ToCV in Georgia. Further studies are required to quantify the yield losses from ToCV alone and synergistic interactions between ToCV in combination with TSWV and/or TYLCV in tomato production in Georgia. Abstract
Hallucinations, delusions, and compulsive behaviors are frequent iatrogenic complications of the treatment of motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD). Although these have been studied, and the phenomenology described, there are few detailed descriptions of the various psychiatric problems our treated PD patients live with that allow physicians who do not have a great deal of experience with PD patients to appreciate the extent of their altered lives. This report is a compilation of vignettes describing these behavioral problems that the treating neurologist or psychiatrist attributed to the medications used for treating PD.

Abstract
Dijet angular distributions are measured over a wide range of dijet invariant masses in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV, at the CERN LHC. The event sample, recorded with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb⁻¹. The data are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD, and yield no evidence of quark compositeness. With a modified frequentist approach, a lower limit on the contact interaction scale for left-handed quarks of Λ⁺ = 5.6 TeV (Λ⁻ = 6.7 TeV) for destructive (constructive) interference is obtained at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
A search for pair production of second-generation scalar leptoquarks in the final state with two muons and two jets is performed using proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb⁻¹. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the predictions from the standard model processes. An upper limit is set on the second-generation leptoquark cross section times β² as a function of the leptoquark mass, and leptoquarks with masses below 394 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level for β = 1, where β is the leptoquark branching fraction into a muon and a quark. These limits are the most stringent to date.

Abstract
A search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks is performed in the final state containing two electrons and two jets using proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 33 pb⁻¹ collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the predictions for the standard model background processes, and an upper limit is set on the leptoquark pair production cross section times β² as a function of the leptoquark mass, where β is the branching fraction of the leptoquark decay to an electron and a quark. A 95% confidence level lower limit is set on the mass of a first-generation scalar leptoquark at 384 GeV for β = 1, which is the most stringent direct limit to date.

Decay of cystalline order and equilibration during the solid-to-plasma transition induced by 20-fs microfocused 92-eV free-electron-laser pulses. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2011; 106:164801. Abstract
We have studied a solid-to-plasma transition by irradiating Al foils with the FLASH free electron laser at intensities up to 10(16) W/cm(2). Intense XUV self-emission shows spectral features that are consistent with emission from regions of high density, which go beyond single inner-shell photoionization of solids. Characteristic features of intrashell transitions allowed us to identify Auger heating of the electrons in the conduction band occurring immediately after the absorption of the XUV laser energy as the dominant mechanism. A simple model of a multicharge state inverse Auger effect is proposed to explain the target emission when the conduction band at solid density becomes more atomiclike as energy is transferred from the electrons to the ions. This allows one to determine, independent of plasma simulations, the electron temperature and density just after the decay of crystalline order and to characterize the early time evolution.

Abstract
Measurements of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC are presented. The analysis is based on an inclusive dijet event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb⁻¹. The results are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD calculations and various Monte Carlo event generators. The dijet azimuthal distributions are found to be sensitive to initial-state gluon radiation.

Abstract
Measurements of the total and differential cross sections dσ/dp(T)(B) and dσ/dy(B) for B(+) mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=7 TeV are presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.8 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment operating at the LHC. The exclusive decay B(+)→J/ψK(+), with J/ψ→μ(+)μ(-), is used to detect B(+) mesons and to measure the production cross section as a function of p(T)(B) and y(B). The total cross section for p(T)(B)>5 GeV and |y(B)|<2.4 is measured to be 28.1±2.4±2.0±3.1 μb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the last is from the luminosity measurement.

Abstract
The differential cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons has been measured as a function of the photon transverse energy E(T)(γ) in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb(-1). Photons are required to have a pseudorapidity |η(γ)|<1.45 and E(T)(γ)>21 GeV, covering the kinematic region 0.006<x(T)<0.086. The measured cross section is found to be in agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

Abstract
The results of the first search for long-lived gluinos produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are presented. The search looks for evidence of long-lived particles that stop in the CMS detector and decay in the quiescent periods between beam crossings. In a dataset with a peak instantaneous luminosity of 1×10(32) cm-2 s-1, an integrated luminosity of 10 pb-1, and a search interval corresponding to 62 hours of LHC operation, no significant excess above background was observed. Limits at the 95% confidence level on gluino pair production over 13 orders of magnitude of gluino lifetime are set. For a mass difference mg - mχ1(0) >100 GeV/c2, and assuming BR(g→gχ1(0))=100%, mg < 370 GeV/c2 are excluded for lifetimes from 10 μs to 1000 s.

Search for quark compositeness with the dijet centrality ratio in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2010; 105:262001. Abstract
A search for quark compositeness in the form of quark contact interactions, based on hadronic jet pairs (dijets) produced in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV, is described. The data sample of the study corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The dijet centrality ratio, which quantifies the angular distribution of the dijets, is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dijet system and is found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. A statistical analysis of the data provides a lower limit on the energy scale of quark contact interactions. The sensitivity of the analysis is such that the expected limit is 2.9 TeV; because the observed value of the centrality ratio at high invariant mass is below the expectation, the observed limit is 4.0 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
Laser-produced proton beams have been used to achieve ultrafast volumetric heating of carbon samples at solid density. The isochoric melting of carbon was probed by a scattering of x rays from a secondary laser-produced plasma. From the scattering signal, we have deduced the fraction of the material that was melted by the inhomogeneous heating. The results are compared to different theoretical approaches for the equation of state which suggests modifications from standard models.

Abstract
A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb⁻¹ collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% confidence level: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and E6 diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

Differing perspectives of sputum and its expectoration: a qualitative study involving patients with cystic fibrosis and physiotherapists. Physiother Theory Pract 2010; 27:278-86. Abstract
Sputum specimens are frequently requested from individuals with chronic suppurative conditions such as cystic fibrosis (CF). For a proportion of people, expectorating sputum can be difficult. Our goal was to explore the potential barriers and facilitators to expectorating sputum from the perspective of those with CF and physiotherapists involved in their care. Eighteen interviews were conducted with people who have CF and three focus groups with physiotherapists. Data were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using a framework approach. Variation emerged in perceptions between physiotherapists and people with CF in terms of sputum's impact on everyday life and the importance of its role in managing the condition. These differences were reflected in the following themes: (1) seepage of bodily boundaries, (2) discrediting nature of sputum, (3) embodied representation of chronic illness, and (4) non-production as a decisional balance. Differing views between participants could have arisen from the personal nature of sputum for people with CF, whilst physiotherapists may see sputum specimens as a necessary part of holistic management of this condition. Education could assist individuals in overcoming some of the barriers associated with expectorating, but physiotherapists may have to individualise the collection of sputum, recognising not everyone will be at ease with this procedure.
