Abstract
Abstract:
This mini-review deals with the miscibility behaviour of two biopolymers, chitosan and
alginate. It is well known that the miscibility in multifunctional polymer blends is favoured due to
specific interactions, which origin a negative heat of mixing. Particular interest is focused on functionalized
polymers because they are the most suitable way to obtain interacting polymers, producing
a single-phase material. Due to the polyfunctionality of chitosan (CS) and other biopolymers, they can
be taken into account as a basis of a strongly interacting polymer. They would allow obtaining compatible
polymeric materials. For this reason, blends containing CS with different vinyl polymers have
been studied. The most significant polymeric blends with these natural polymers will be analyzed in
this review. Chitosan is obtained from the biopolymer chitin through sequential processes of demineralization,
deproteinization and deacetylation. The native chitin is obtained by direct separation from
the marine crustaceans shell, which is abundant on the sea coasts. Some classic results that relate to
the polymeric blends containing amphiphilic polymers will be discussed. Another biopolymer of the
coast is Sodium Alginate (SA). Alginate also allows the formation of compatible polymer blends.
Results in this regard will also be analyzed in this review.

Abstract
Formulation of antioxidant agents is still a challenge that limits their application in the biomedical field. Pentablock copolymers obtained through modification of two common PEO-PPO-PEO copolymers (Pluronic F127 and F68) with poly(ε-carprolactone) (PCL) were evaluated regarding their capability to form nanocarriers suitable for gallic acid, methyl gallate, and ethyl gallate. Applying a dialysis method, PCL/F127/PCL and PCL/F68/PCL self-assembled into spherical micelles in 0.9% NaCl aqueous solution but notably differed in critical micellar concentration (CMC), micelle core hydrophobicity, and micelle size, as evidenced by pyrene fluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. Cytotoxicity studies showed that the copolymers were safe at concentrations well above the CMC. Transfer of gallic acid and derivatives from aqueous medium to the micelle phase was characterized in terms of distribution constant and free energy of transference, which were shown to be strongly dependent on the hydrophobicity of the gallate derivatives and the length of PCL in the pentablock copolymer. Antioxidant activity of gallates was challenged against DPPH previously loaded in PCL/F127/PCL and PCL/F68/PCL micelles. The more the hydrophobicity of the gallate derivative, the greater the capability to enter in the micelle and to consume free radicals. In vitro release studies of gallic acid, methyl gallate, and ethyl gallate from the pentablock copolymer micelles also evidenced the influence of the hydrophobicity of both the gallate derivative and the micelle core on release rate, recording a variety of release patterns. Overall, PCL/F127/PCL and PCL/F68/PCL appear as suitable nanocarriers of potent antioxidant agents in a wide range of polarities, which may be useful for diverse therapeutic applications.

Abstract
We consider dc-electronic transport through a nanowire suspended between two normal-metal leads in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show the very mechanism through which such a system, whose stationary current-voltage characteristic is essentially characterized by positive differential conductance, becomes unstable with respect to an onset of self-excited oscillations in electrical transport and mechanical vibrations. The self-excitation mechanism is based on the correlation between the occupancy of the quantized spin-split electronic energy levels inside the nanowire and the velocity of the nanowire with the crucial influence of strong enough retardation effects in magnetomotive coupling coming from mechanical vibrations.

Abstract
We predict a new type of phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional system of interacting electrons at high magnetic fields, the stabilization of a density wave which transforms a two-dimensional open Fermi surface into a periodic chain of large pockets with small distances between them. We show that quantum tunneling of electrons between the neighboring closed orbits enveloping these pockets transforms the electron spectrum into a set of extremely narrow energy bands and gaps that decreases the total electron energy, thus leading to a magnetic breakdown induced density wave ground state analogous to the well-known instability of the Peierls type.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization and the self-assembly process of a novel biodegradable block copolymer containing a poly(epsilon-caprolactone), PCL, central block and three poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), PVP, arms are reported. Three samples with different amounts of PVP were investigated. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, (1)H NMR and viscosity measurements. The composition and the molecular weights of the block copolymers were established using size exclusion chromatography SEC and (1)H NMR. Micelle formation by these copolymers was monitored by using the vibrational fine structure of pyrene monomer fluorescence and the critical aggregation concentrations, cac, of the copolymers in aqueous solution were determined using sigmoid Boltzmann-type fitting of the fluorescence data. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed a bimodal size distribution for the copolymers in solution, indicating that the micellization is an intermolecular process. Partitioning coefficients of pyrene between copolymer micelles and water were also determined and increase in magnitude with increasing epsilon-caprolactone content of the copolymer.

Abstract
The surface properties of the supramolecular inclusion complex (IC) obtained from the threading of alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) onto poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) free in solution are studied. The complexes were characterized by IR, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The variation of the interfacial tension, gamma(int), with inclusion complex (IC) concentration and temperature were determined. The results were compared with those found for PEO under the same conditions. alpha-CD does not present surface activity. To quantify the adsorption process of IC and PEO in aqueous medium, the Gibbs equation was used. The driving force for adsorption of IC at the air/aqueous interface seems to arise from an enthalpic contribution. The wettability of the alpha-CD, PEO, and IC films with two liquids was determined by static contact angle measurements. The hydrophobicity degree was estimated. IC is more hydrophobic than PEO and alpha-CD.

Abstract
A comparative study of spread and adsorbed monolayer of poly(ethylene oxide)s of different molecular weight hydrophobically modified with alkyl isocyanates of different length chain is reported. The modification of the polymer was carried out according to reported procedures. The polymers obtained were studied at the air-water interface by Langmuir isotherms for spread monolayers and by Gibbs isotherms for the adsorption process. Isotherms obtained are interpreted in terms of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic balance of the polymers. Limiting area per repeating unit (A(0)) and collapse pressure (pi(c)) from spread monolayers were obtained. Spread monolayers of the hydrophobically modified polymers show larger collapse pressure values than unmodified polymer monolayers. In the adsorption process the excess surface concentration Gamma(infinity), area per repeat unit sigma, and efficiency of the adsorption were determined. The values of the area occupied per repeat unit in adsorbed monolayer (sigma) were larger than those of the spread monolayer. The efficiency of the adsorption of poly(ethylene oxide)s increases with the hydrophobic modification and with the alkyl chain length.

Abstract
In this work a comparative study of different molecular-weight fractions of the amphiphilic polymer poly(tetrahydropyranyl-2-methyl methacrylate) (PTHPMM) in solution and at the air/water interface is reported. The synthesis of the polymer was carried out in solution by radical polymerization. The polymer was fractionated and five fractions were studied in solution and at the air/water interface. The weight-average molecular weight M(w), the second virial coefficient A(2), and the radius of gyration R(g) were determined in toluene by static light scattering. Intrinsic viscosities [eta] of the polymer fractions in three solvents were obtained. The Kuhn-Mark-Houwink-Sakurada relationships were established. The Langmuir isotherms for different polymer fractions were obtained at the air/water interface by monolayer compression at constant temperature. The overlap surface concentrations were determined, and from these results the radius of gyration in two dimensions was calculated. The thermodynamic power of the toluene and the air/water interface for PTHPMM were estimated from the empirical relationship between the radius of gyration in two and three dimensions and the weight-average molecular weight.

Abstract
The surface behavior of poly(4-vinylpyridine) quaternized with tetradecyl bromide (P4VPC(14)) as function of the quaternization degree was studied. The percentage of vinylpyridine moieties quaternized was found to be 35 to 75%. Surface pressure-area isotherms (pi-A) at the air-water interface were determined. The polymer monolayers show particular shapes at different quaternization degrees. In order to get information about the hydrophobicity degree of the polymeric systems, the surface energy (SE), and their dispersion and polar contributions, gamma(D) and gamma(P) respectively, measurements of the contact angle (CA) with water, bromobenzene, and cis-decalin were performed. The results obtained are dependent on the quaternization percentage of the functionalized polymers. At high quaternization degree, hysteresis in the pi-A diagrams was observed. The change in the P4VPC(14) molecular organization in the monolayer was also investigated during the compression and expansion processes. During these processes the monolayer was monitored by Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). For several cycles, all compression curves and all expansion curves showed a common intersection point. We have tried to describe the P4VPC(14) molecular organization at the air-water interface by molecular dynamic simulation (MDS). The results are also discussed in terms of the effect of the counterions and water on the stability of the system over the more packed region.

Abstract
Conditions such as stress, infection, autoimmune disease, etc. elevate the number and function of extrathymic T cells that are generated mainly in the liver. As primitive, self-reactive clones of T cells that coexpress receptors of the natural killer (NK) lineage, they mediate cytotoxicity against altered self, malignant and infected cells and have the unique potential to rapidly secrete large amount of T helper 1 (Th1) or Th2 cytokines. To elucidate whether some of these changes occur even during the syngeneic pregnancy, we made phenotypic and functional characterization of mononuclear lymphatic cells (MNLCs) isolated from the liver and spleen of pregnant C57BL/6 mice, testing their cytotoxicity against syngeneic thymocytes as well as against NK- and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK)-sensitive targets. The data have shown that on the sixteenth day of syngeneic pregnancy TCRint, NK1.1+ and IL-2Rbeta+ cells were accumulated in the liver, while the quantities of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and total number classical NK (NK1.1+CD3- or IL-2Rbeta+CD3-) cells were increased in the spleen. Pregnancy-activated hepatic and splenic MNLCs were more cytotoxic against syngeneic thymocytes, YAC-1 and P815 targets, suggesting that the maternal liver is a main producer of autoreactive NKT clones, which subsequently augment NK- and LAK cell-mediated cytotoxicity in the liver and spleen.

Abstract
Chaotic properties of the one-parameter family of oval billiards with parabolic boundaries are investigated. Classical dynamics of such billiard is mixed and depends sensitively on the value of the shape parameter. Deviation matrices of some low period orbits are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the stability of orbits bouncing at the singular joining points of the parabolic arcs, where the boundary curvature is discontinuous. The existence of such orbits is connected with the segmentation of the phase space into two or more chaotic components. The obtained results are illustrated by numerical calculations of the Poincaré sections and compared with the properties of the elliptical stadium billiards.

Chaotic behavior in lemon-shaped billiards with elliptical and hyperbolic boundary arcs. PHYSICAL REVIEW. E, STATISTICAL, NONLINEAR, AND SOFT MATTER PHYSICS 2001; 64:016214. Abstract
Chaotic properties of a new family, ellipse hyperbola billiards (EHB), of lemon-shaped two-dimensional billiards, interpolating between the square and the circle, whose boundaries consist of hyperbolic, parabolic, or elliptical segments, depending on the shape parameter delta, are investigated classically and quantally. Classical chaotic fraction is calculated and compared with the quantal level density fluctuation measures obtained by fitting the calculated level spacing sequences with the Brody, Berry-Robnik, and Berry-Robnik-Brody distributions. Stability of selected classical orbits is investigated, and for some special hyperbolic points in the Poincaré sections, the "blinking island" phenomenon is observed. Results for the EHB billiards are compared with the properties of the family of generalized power-law lemon-shaped billiards.
