The stability of Cl-, Br-, and I-passivated Si(100)-(2 × 1) in ambient environments for atomically-precise pattern preservation

Atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM) leverages the highly reactive nature of Si dangling bonds relative to H- or Cl-passivated Si to selectively adsorb precursor molecules into lithographically defined areas with sub-nanometer resolution. Due to the high reactivity of dangling bonds, this process is confined to ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environments, which currently limits its commercialization and broad-based appeal. In this work, we explore the use of halogen adatoms to preserve APAM-derived lithographic patterns outside of UHV to enable facile transfer into real-world commercial processes. Specifically, we examine the stability of H-, Cl-, Br-, and I-passivated Si(100) in inert N₂and ambient environments. Characterization with scanning tunneling microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that each of the fully passivated surfaces were resistant to oxidation in 1 atm of N₂for up to 44 h. Varying levels of surface degradation and contamination were observed upon exposure to the laboratory ambient environment. Characterization byex situXPS after ambient exposures ranging from 15 min to 8 h indicated the Br- and I-passivated Si surfaces were highly resistant to degradation, while Cl-passivated Si showed signs of oxidation within minutes of ambient exposure. As a proof-of-principle demonstration of pattern preservation, a H-passivated Si sample patterned and passivated with independent Cl, Br, I, and bare Si regions was shown to maintain its integrity in all but the bare Si region post-exposure to an N₂environment. The successful demonstration of the preservation of APAM patterns outside of UHV environments opens new possibilities for transporting atomically-precise devices outside of UHV for integrating with non-UHV processes, such as other chemistries and commercial semiconductor device processes.

Comparison of tongue muscle characteristics of preterm and full term infants during nutritive and nonnutritive sucking

BACKGROUND

Independent oral feeding requires coordination of suck, swallow and breathe and the lingual musculature plays a significant role in this coordinative action. However, clinical benchmarks of lingual function fundamental to successful feeding have not been explored.

AIMS

The present study tests our model for quantifying infant lingual force and size and compares the muscle measures of interest in two cohorts: healthy full-term infants (FT) (N=5) and healthy preterm infants (PT) (N=6).

METHOD

Using an instrumented pacifier and bottle nipple, we determined the resultant compressive forces applied to the nipple by the tongue during nutritive (NS) and nonnutritive sucking (NNS). Muscle size was estimated from measures of posterior tongue thickness using ultrasonography.

RESULTS

After controlling for weight and post menstrual age, statistically significant differences were found between FT and PT infants beginning to feed for NNS frequency and NS tongue force. Clinically significant differences were detected for NNS tongue force and posterior tongue thickness. Additionally, PT infants demonstrated a significant difference in mean tongue force between NS and NNS and FT infants did not. FT infants demonstrated a significant difference in mean frequency between NS and NNS and PT infants did not. Linear regression indicated that mean posterior tongue thickness alone predicted 55% of the variance in NS force.

CONCLUSIONS

Results demonstrate the feasibility of our approach and suggest that infant tongue muscle characteristics necessary for successful feeding differ between healthy full term infants and preterm infants who are beginning oral feeding.

Cough-associated headache in patients with Chiari I malformation: CSF Flow analysis by means of cine phase-contrast MR imaging

The purpose of this study was to analyze the CSF flow in patients with Chiari I to determine differences between patients with and without CAH. Thirty patients with Chiari I malformation underwent cine-PC CSF flow imaging in the sagittal plane. CSF flow pulsations were analyzed by placing regions of interest in the anterior cervical subarachnoid space. Maximum CSF systolic (craniocaudal) and diastolic (caudocranial) velocities as well as the durations of CSF systole and diastole (measured in fractions of the cardiac cycle) were determined. In the region of interest just below the foramen magnum, patients with CAH had a significantly shorter CSF systole and longer diastole (P=.02). A CSF diastolic length of ≥0.75 of the cardiac cycle was 67% sensitive and 86% specific for CAH. Our results indicate that Cine-PC imaging can show differences in CSF flow patterns in patients with Chiari I with and without CAH.

Accelerated sea-level rise from West Antarctica

Recent aircraft and satellite laser altimeter surveys of the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica show that local glaciers are discharging about 250 cubic kilometers of ice per year to the ocean, almost 60% more than is accumulated within their catchment basins. This discharge is sufficient to raise sea level by more than 0.2 millimeters per year. Glacier thinning rates near the coast during 2002-2003 are much larger than those observed during the 1990s. Most of these glaciers flow into floating ice shelves over bedrock up to hundreds of meters deeper than previous estimates, providing exit routes for ice from further inland if ice-sheet collapse is under way.

Greenland Ice Sheet: High-Elevation Balance and Peripheral Thinning

Aircraft laser-altimeter surveys over northern Greenland in 1994 and 1999 have been coupled with previously reported data from southern Greenland to analyze the recent mass-balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Above 2000 meters elevation, the ice sheet is in balance on average but has some regions of local thickening or thinning. Thinning predominates at lower elevations, with rates exceeding 1 meter per year close to the coast. Interpolation of our results between flight lines indicates a net loss of about 51 cubic kilometers of ice per year from the entire ice sheet, sufficient to raise sea level by 0.13 millimeter per year-approximately 7% of the observed rise.

Rapid thinning of parts of the southern greenland ice sheet

Aircraft laser-altimeter surveys over southern Greenland in 1993 and 1998 show three areas of thickening by more than 10 centimeters per year in the southern part of the region and large areas of thinning, particularly in the east. Above 2000 meters elevation the ice sheet is in balance but thinning predominates at lower elevations, with rates exceeding 1 meter per year on east coast outlet glaciers. These high thinning rates occur at different latitudes and at elevations up to 1500 meters, which suggests that they are caused by increased rates of creep thinning rather than by excessive melting. Taken as a whole, the surveyed region is in negative balance.
