Abstract
Upon infection with Bluetongue virus (BTV), an arthropod-borne virus, type I interferon (IFN-I) is produced in vivo and in vitro. IFN-I is essential for the establishment of an antiviral cellular response, and most if not all viruses have elaborated strategies to counteract its action. In this study, we assessed the ability of BTV to interfere with IFN-I synthesis and identified the nonstructural viral protein NS3 as an antagonist of the IFN-I system.

Abstract
Dendritic cells (DCs), especially plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs), produce large amounts of alpha/beta interferon (IFN-α/β) upon infection with DNA or RNA viruses, which has impacts on the physiopathology of the viral infections and on the quality of the adaptive immunity. However, little is known about the IFN-α/β production by DCs during infections by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) viruses. We present here novel information about the production of IFN-α/β induced by bluetongue virus (BTV), a vector-borne dsRNA Orbivirus of ruminants, in sheep primary DCs. We found that BTV induced IFN-α/β in skin lymph and in blood in vivo. Although BTV replicated in a substantial fraction of the conventional DCs (cDCs) and pDCs in vitro, only pDCs responded to BTV by producing a significant amount of IFN-α/β. BTV replication in pDCs was not mandatory for IFN-α/β production since it was still induced by UV-inactivated BTV (UV-BTV). Other inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and IL-12p40, were also induced by UV-BTV in primary pDCs. The induction of IFN-α/β required endo-/lysosomal acidification and maturation. However, despite being an RNA virus, UV-BTV did not signal through Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) for IFN-α/β induction. In contrast, pathways involving the MyD88 adaptor and kinases dsRNA-activated protein kinase (PKR) and stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK)/Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK) were implicated. This work highlights the importance of pDCs for the production of innate immunity cytokines induced by a dsRNA virus, and it shows that a dsRNA virus can induce IFN-α/β in pDCs via a novel TLR-independent and Myd88-dependent pathway. These findings have implications for the design of efficient vaccines against dsRNA viruses.

Abstract
Bluetongue virus (BTV), an arthropod-borne member of the Reoviridae family, is a double-stranded RNA virus that causes an economically important livestock disease that has spread across Europe in recent decades. Production of type I interferon (alpha/beta interferon [IFN-α/β]) has been reported in vivo and in vitro upon BTV infection. However, the cellular sensors and signaling pathways involved in this process remain unknown. Here we studied the mechanisms responsible for the production of IFN-β in response to BTV serotype 8. Upon BTV infection of A549 cells, expression of IFN-β and other proinflammatory cytokines was strongly induced at both the protein and mRNA levels. This response appeared to be dependent on virus replication, since exposure to UV-inactivated virus failed to induce IFN-β. We also demonstrated that BTV infection activated the transcription factors IFN regulatory factor 3 and nuclear factor κB. We investigated the role of several pattern recognition receptors in this response and showed that expression of IFN-β was greatly reduced after small-interfering-RNA-mediated knockdown of the RNA helicase encoded by retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I) or melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5). In contrast, silencing of MyD88, Toll-like receptor 3, or the recently described DexD/H-box helicase DDX1 sensor had no or a weak effect on IFN-β induction, suggesting that the RIG-I-like receptor pathway is specifically engaged for BTV sensing. Moreover, we also showed that overexpression of either RIG-I or MDA5 impaired BTV expression in infected A549 cells. Overall, this indicates that RIG-I and MDA5 can both contribute to the recognition and control of BTV infection.

Abstract
A general review describing the current knowledge on the type I IFN pathway. Description of several mechanisms evolved by viruses to counteract this antiviral response. An up-to-date review on the interaction of BTV and the type I IFN pathway in vivo and in vitro. Description of the cellular sensors involved in the induction of IFN-α/β synthesis upon BTV infection in haematopoietic and non-haematopoietic cells. Description of the strategies evolved by BTV to counteract this cellular antiviral response. The innate immune response is the first line of defence against viruses, involving the production of type I IFN (IFN-α/β) and other pro-inflammatory cytokines that control the infection. It also shapes the adaptive immune response generated by both T and B cells. Production of type I IFN occurs both in vivo and in vitro in response to Bluetongue virus (BTV), an arthropod-borne virus. However, the mechanisms responsible for the production of IFN-β in response to BTV remained unknown until recently and are still not completely understood. In this review, we describe the recent advances in the identification of cellular sensors and signalling pathways involved in this process. The RNA helicases retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I) and melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) were shown to be involved in the expression of IFN-β as well as in the control of BTV infection in non-haematopoietic cells. In contrast, induction of IFN-α/β synthesis in sheep primary plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) required the MyD88 adaptor independently of the Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7), as well as the kinases dsRNA-activated protein kinase (PKR) and stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK)/Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK). As type I IFN is essential for the establishment of an antiviral cellular response, most of viruses have elaborated counteracting mechanisms to hinder its action. This review also addresses the ability of BTV to interfere with IFN-β synthesis and the recent findings describing the non-structural viral protein NS3 as a powerful antagonist of the host cellular response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AIDS-related sclerosing cholangitis occurs in patients with advanced immunodeficiency, but ductal pancreatic alterations have not been evaluated in large series. METHODS Twenty-nine consecutive patients with a mean age of 33 years underwent ERCP for biliary work-up. Complete pancreatography was obtained in 28 patients. Serum levels of amylase were increased in 17 patients prior to ERCP. The mean duration of HIV infection was 6.1 years (range 3 to 10 years). RESULTS Fifteen patients (53.6%) had pancreatographic changes classified according to the Cambridge classification (stage 1, 4 cases; stage 2, 7 cases; stage 3, 4 cases). Dilatations, irregularities, short stenoses of the main pancreatic duct, and irregularities of side branches were the most frequent abnormalities. Fourteen of these 15 patients (93.3%) had cholangitis and a CD4 cell count of less than 60 per cubic millimeter. Risk factors for pancreatic damage were similar in patients with and without pancreatographic changes. Opportunistic infection occurred in 14 of 15 patients with pancreatographic changes (candida, cytomegalovirus, cryptosporidia, microsporidia, and mycobacteria). CONCLUSION Abnormal pancreatographies were found in about half of the HIV-infected patients who underwent ERCP. The pancreatographic features were suggestive of chronic pancreatitis and were closely related to the presence of AIDS-related sclerosing cholangitis.

Abstract
The BiPo-3 detector is a low radioactive detector dedicated to measuring ultra-low natural contaminations of 208Tl and 214Bi in thin materials, initially developed to measure the radiopurity of the double β decay source foils of the SuperNEMO experiment at the μBq/kg level. The BiPo-3 technique consists in installing the foil of interest between two thin ultra-radiopure scintillators coupled to low radioactive photomultipliers. The design and performances of the detector are presented. In this paper, the final results of the 208Tl and 214Bi activity measurements of the first enriched 82Se foils are reported for the first time, showing the capability of the detector to reach sensitivities in the range of some μBq/kg.

Abstract
We report results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661 g of (130)Te in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. The ββ decay rate of (130)Te is found to be greater than zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T(½)(2ν) = [7.0 ± 0.9(stat) ± 1.1(syst)] × 10(20) yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half-life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay.

Abstract
Abstract
A radiochemical method for producing 82Se sources with an ultra-low level of contamination of natural radionuclides (40K, decay products of 232Th and 238U) has been developed based on cation-exchange chromatographic purification with reverse removal of impurities. It includes chromatographic separation (purification), reduction, conditioning (which includes decantation, centrifugation, washing, grinding, and drying), and 82Se foil production. The conditioning stage, during which highly dispersed elemental selenium is obtained by the reduction of purified selenious acid (H2SeO3) with sulfur dioxide (SO2) represents the crucial step in the preparation of radiopure 82Se samples. The natural selenium (600 g) was first produced in this procedure in order to refine the method. The technique developed was then used to produce 2.5 kg of radiopure enriched selenium (82Se). The produced 82Se samples were wrapped in polyethylene (12 μm thick) and radionuclides present in the sample were analyzed with the BiPo-3 detector. The radiopurity of the plastic materials (chromatographic column material and polypropylene chemical vessels), which were used at all stages, was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The radiopurity of the 82Se foils was checked by measurements with the BiPo-3 spectrometer, which confirmed the high purity of the final product. The measured contamination level for 208Tl was 8–54 μBq/kg, and for 214Bi the detection limit of 600 μBq/kg has been reached.

Abstract
We report the results of a first experimental search for lepton number violation by four units in the neutrinoless quadruple-β decay of ^{150}Nd using a total exposure of 0.19 kg yr recorded with the NEMO-3 detector at the Modane Underground Laboratory. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range T_{1/2}>(1.1-3.2)×10^{21} yr at the 90% C.L., depending on the model used for the kinematic distributions of the emitted electrons.

Tritium is released abundantly to the environment by nuclear power plants (NPP), as a product of neutron capture by hydrogen and deuterium. In normal running conditions, released cooling waters may contain levels of tritium close to or even larger than the maximum authorised limit for human consumption (drinking and irrigation). The European Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom requires a maximum level of tritium in water for human consumption lower than 100 Bq=L. Current monitoring of tritium activity in water by liquid scintillating method takes about two days and can only be carried out in a dedicated laboratory. This system is not appropriate for real time monitoring. At present, there exists no available detector device with enough sensitivity to monitor waters for human consumption with high enough sensitivity. The goal of the TRITIUM project is to build a tritium monitor capable to measure tritium activities with detection limit close to 100Bq=L, using instrumentation technique developed in recent years for Nuclear and Particle Physics, such as scintillating fibres and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). In this paper the current status of the TRITIUM project is presented and he results of first prototypes are discussed. A detector system based on scintillating fibers read out either photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) or silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays is under development and will be installed in the vicinity of Almaraz nuclear power plant (Cáceres, Spain) by the fourth term of 2019.

Abstract
The Modane underground laboratory (LSM) is the deepest operating underground laboratory in Europe. It is located under the Fréjus peak in Savoie Alps in France, with average overburden of 4800 m w. e. (water equivalent), providing low-background environment for experiments in nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and environmental physics. It is crucial to understand individual sources of background such as residual cosmic-ray flux of high-energy muons, muon-induced neutrons and contributions from radionuclides present in the environment. The identified dominant sources of background are radioactive contamination of construction materials of detectors and laboratory walls, radon contamination of the laboratory air, and neutrons produced in the laboratory. The largest neutron contribution has been identified from (α, n) reactions in low Z materials (10-7-10-4 n s-1 Bq-1) and from spontaneous fission of 238U (1.1× 10-6 n s-1 Bq-1).

Abstract
The authors report a case of myocarditis secondary to a Salmonella Virchow infection in a 20 year old non-immunodeficient man without a previous medical history. The outcome was favourable after treatment with fluoroquinolone. The features of this rare complication of non-typhic salmonella infection are discussed with respect to this and four other recently published cases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inflammatory hepatic pseudo-tumors are rare, non-neoplastic lesions, and their diagnosis is usually made on hepatectomy samples. OBSERVATION The general health of a 77 year-old patient was suddenly altered and clinical examination (and scan) revealed a hepatic tumor. Diagnosis of inflammatory hepatic pseudo-tumor was evoked by analysis of a biopsy. In view of the age and the general state of the patient we chose prolonged antibiotic therapy rather than hepatic surgery. Nine months later, the tumor had regressed. COMMENTS Because they are rare (100 cases described), hepatic pseudo-tumors raise two questions: can diagnosis be made simply by biopsy or should one always analyze the complete sample and, if hepatectomy is contraindicated, is non-surgical treatment effective? The progression of our patient permits us to reply positively to both questions.

Abstract
Lingual thyroid and intra lingual thyro-glossal cyst are two benign tumours of similar embryological pathogenesis respectively with the arrest in the ectopic position of the thyroid gland during its downward migration and from abnormal persistence of the thyro-glossal tract for the cyst. The occurrence of lingual thyroid is rare 1/100,000 patients and outnumbers the incidence of intra-lingual cyst which represents an estimated 2.1% of the thyro-glossal cysts or fistulas. Both lesions are a rare cause of dysphagia and dyspnoea due to oropharyngeal obstruction, and radionuclide scintigraphy combined with CT and/or MRI will establish the diagnosis. Surgical pharyngotomy with an infra-hyoid approach provides excellent access to the lesions and complete removal of the tumours.
