Abstract
We have investigated indirectly the presence of nitric oxide in the enteric nervous system of the digestive tract of human fetuses and newborns by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) immunocytochemistry and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPHd) histochemistry. In the stomach, NOS immunoactivity was confined to the myenteric plexus and nerve fibres in the outer smooth musculature; few immunoreactive nerve cell bodies were found in ganglia of the outer submucous plexus. In the pyloric region, a few nitrergic perikarya were seen in the inner submucous plexus and some immunoreactive fibers were found in the muscularis mucosae. In the small intestine, nitrergic neurons clustered just underneath or above the topographical plane formed by the primary nerve strands of the myenteric plexus up to the 26th week of gestation, after which stage, they occurred throughout the ganglia. Many of their processes contributed to the dense fine-meshed tertiary nerve network of the myenteric plexus and the circular smooth muscle layer. NOS-immunoreactive fibres directed to the circular smooth muscle layer originated from a few NOS-containing perikarya located in the outer submucous plexus. In the colon, caecum and rectum, labelled nerve cells and fibres were numerous in the myenteric plexus; they were also found in the outer submucous plexus. The circular muscle layer had a much denser NOS-immunoreactive innervation than the longitudinally oriented taenia. The marked morphological differences observed between nitrergic neurons within the developing human gastrointestinal tract, together with the typical innervation pattern in the ganglionic and aganglionic nerve networks, support the existence of distinct subpopulations of NOS-containing enterice neurons acting as interneurons or (inhibitory) motor neurons.

Abstract
1. In dba mice ovariectomized at birth the vagina, uterus, and mammary glands showed a gradual recovery from the castrate state, and finally reached the stage which they presumably can attain only under the influence of estrogenic hormones. Tumors of the mammary glands developed in 37 animals, of 75 examined, between the ages of 14 and 28 months (3 adenomas and 34 carcinomas). 2. As ovarian regeneration had not taken place the probability that estrogen originated in some other organ in the absence of the ovaries is suggested. 3. The consistent nodular hyperplasia of the suprarenal cortex and close morphological similarity of cells of these nodules to lutein-like cells of the ovaries points to the abnormal suprarenals as possible sources of the estrogenic hormones.

Abstract
Differentiation of dermatofibroma (DF) from dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) can be difficult. CD34 and Factor XIIIa have been used to differentiate DF from DFSP. However, there is overlap and lack of specificity of their expression. Tenascin is an extracellular matrix glycoprotein that is involved in embryogenesis, carcinogenesis, and wound healing. The aim of the study was to assess the role of tenascin in DF and DFSP and compare the results with those obtained with CD34 and Factor XIIIa. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on 20 cases each of DFSP and DF, using antibodies to tenascin, CD34 and Factor XIIIa, and the streptavidin biotin technique. Positivity for all 3 antibodies was assessed within the tumors. Tenascin expression was also assessed at the dermal-epidermal junction. Strong tenascin positivity was noted at the dermal-epidermal junction overlying the lesion in 20 of 20 cases of DF (100%) and was negative over the lesion in 20 of 20 cases DFSP (100%). Tenascin was noted within the lesion of 80% of both DF and DFSP (16/20 cases). CD34 was strongly expressed in 16 of 20 (80%) DFSP and 5 of 20 (25%) DF, whereas Factor XIIIa was strongly expressed in 19 of 20 (95%) DF and 3 of 15 (15%) DFSP. Although CD34 was expressed in 80% DFSP and Factor XIIIa in 95% of DF, there was overlap in their expression in the 2 types of tumors. The increased expression of tenascin at the dermal-epidermal junction overlying the lesion in DF but not in DFSP, differentiated these 2 tumors. In contrast, tenascin expression within the lesion did not differentiate DF from DFSP.

Abstract
A sodium montmorillonite and six organophilic montmorillonites coated with different surfactants were characterized in various ways in the study. Particle and surface characteristics were determined by nitrogen adsorption and inverse gas chromatography, respectively. The gallery structure of organophilic montmorillonite, the orientation of surfactants in the galleries, and surface coverage were estimated by X-ray diffraction measurements and model calculations. The effect of organophilization on the properties of polypropylene/clay composites was determined by the measurement of tensile properties. The results showed that the surface energy of uncoated layered silicates is large; thus, the forces keeping the layers together are very strong. The long chain surfactants used for the coating of montmorillonite orientate more or less parallel to the surface and usually cover the platelets in a single layer in commercial silicates. Surplus surfactant is not located in the galleries, but among the particles, and might influence the properties of composites negatively. Organophilization leads to the drastic decrease of surface free energy. Surface tension of all coated clays is practically the same, irrespective of the type of the surfactant used for treatment. Low surface energy leads to weaker forces between the layers, which might facilitate exfoliation. This effect can be further enhanced by the use of surfactants with two long aliphatic chains, one of which orientates vertically to the surface, leading to larger gallery distance. Polymer/silicate interaction also decreases as an effect of decreasing surface tension proved by the decrease of tensile yield stress of polypropylene/montmorillonite composites. Besides surface tension, the exfoliation of layered silicates is influenced by several other factors as well, like gallery distance, mutual solubility of the components, competitive adsorption, or possible chemical reactions.

Abstract
CaCO3 fillers were investigated by inverse gas chromatography (IGC) to determine the dispersion component of their surface tension as well as their acid-base character. Because of the high energy of the filler surface, it readily adsorbs water, thus the parameters measured by IGC depend on the conditioning temperature, as well as on the measurement conditions. As a consequence, the determined surface characteristics are not material constants; different fillers or the effect of coating can be compared only under standard conditions. The use of the same conditioning and measurement temperature eliminates the effect of measurement time. Under appropriate standard conditions the acid-base characteristics of the filler can be determined reliably. However, the accuracy of the determination and the value of the derived parameters depend very much on the selected approach and on the acid-base constants used for the probe molecules. A critical analysis of the approaches used in the current literature pointed out those that yield the most reasonable and accurate values. The results prove that the surface of CaCO3 is strongly basic in character. Coating significantly reduces basicity. Surprisingly, the filler coated with an amount of stearic acid resulting in minimum surface tension showed relatively strong acidity, which indicates a coating exceeding monolayer coverage and/or the uneven distribution of the surfactant on the surface.

Abstract
TPS/Na-montmorillonite nanocomposite films were prepared by solution and melt blending. Clay content changed between 0 and 25 wt% based on the amount of dry starch. Structure, tensile properties, and water content of wet conditioned films were determined as a function of clay content. Intercalated structure and VH-type crystallinity of starch were found for all the nanocomposites independently of clay and plasticizer content or preparation method, but at larger than 10 wt% clay content nanocomposites prepared by melt intercalation contained aggregated particles as well. In spite of the incomplete exfoliation clay reinforces TPS considerably. Preparation method has a strong influence on mechanical properties of wet conditioned films. Mechanical properties of the conditioned samples prepared by solution homogenization are much better than those of nanocomposites prepared by melt blending. Water, which was either adsorbed or bonded in the composites in conditioning or solution mixing process, respectively, has different effect on mechanical properties.

Abstract
The negative feedback control of thyrotropin production by the anterior pituitary involves local 5'-deiodination of L-thyroxine (L-T4) to the active thyroid hormone 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) by two 5'-deiodinase isozymes which are distinctly regulated by thyroid hormone. T3 rapidly increased steady-state mRNA levels and activity of type I iodothyronine-5'-deiodinase (5'DI) in rat anterior pituitary and in reaggregate cultures of anterior pituitaries. Type II 5'-deiodinase activity determined in parallel with 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine (rT3) as substrate was markedly lower than that of 5'DI. 5'DI mRNA levels and activity were higher in anterior pituitaries of female compared to male rats. Neither gender differences nor T3 stimulation of 5'DI activity were found in the posterior part. These data demonstrate a T3 dependent expression of 5'DI in euthyroid anterior pituitary and suggest that this isozyme serves a major function within the complex network of thyroid hormone homeostasis.

Abstract
The role of acid-base interactions in the nonreactive surface treatment of mineral fillers was studied by a dissolution method. The effect of treatment on the surface properties of CaCO3 covered with stearic acid was determined by ESCA measurements and by the calculation of the basicity of the treated fillers. The dissolution measurements were carried out in twelve different solvents. The maximum amount of surfactant adsorbed on the filler surface (cmax) proved to be independent of the acid-base character of the solvent, while the amount bonded proportionally (c100) depended strongly on it. The results showed that competitive processes determine the surface coverage of the filler: the adsorption of the surfactant and the solvent on the filler surface competes with the solution of the treating material in the solvent. Sedimentation experiments gave valuable information about the strength of solvent/filler interaction. The surface characteristics of the filler changed with surface coverage; the surfactant concentration at which basicity attains its minimum agrees well with the monolayer coverage determined by ESCA and with the c100 value obtained in apolar solvents. The results have practical relevance as well, similar competitive solution/adsorption processes may take place also in composites containing surface treated fillers. Copyright 1997 Academic Press. Abstract
Twenty-seven late larval or early pupal lethal mutations were isolated for the X-chromosome, some of which showed structural and/or functional deficiencies of the imaginal discs. The mutants were grouped according to the size and morphology of their discs as follows: 1. discs normal: 18 mutants. 2. discs small: 2 mutants. 3. discs degenerate: 4 mutants. 4. discless: 1 mutant. 5. discs heterogeneous: 2 mutants. Preliminary characterization of the mutants included a study of disc morphology, puparium formation and pupal molt, in vivo and in vitro evagination of the imaginal discs, autonomy of the mutation in the disc tissue (differentiation after transplantation and gynander mosaicism test). Possible relations between disc morphology and the former characteristics are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are indications that alterations in the nitric oxide (NO) system of relaxation mediate gastrointestinal motor disturbances induced by chronic alcohol consumption (CAC). As CAC is known to inhibit the motility of the mouse small intestine, we investigated in this model if CAC affects basal NO synthesis by myenteric neurons and which NOS isoforms are involved. METHODS The instantaneous NO synthesis of individual neurons was optically measured in whole-mount preparations loaded with the NO synthesis indicator DAF-FM, and the expression of nNOS, iNOS and eNOS was determined by immunohistochemistry. KEY RESULTS The DAF-FM recordings showed that CAC induced an increase in neuronal NO synthesis (absolute fluorescence: control 34±12; CAC 140±56; mean±SD; P<0.0004). Neurons of control mice expressed the nNOS (29±3% of total) and iNOS (28±1%) isoforms. eNOS expression was observed in <0.5% of the neurons. Chronic alcohol consumption caused an increase in the proportion of iNOS-expressing neurons (to 33±5%; P<0.01) and a decrease in nNOS-expressing neurons (to 22±3%; P<0.0001), without altering the proportion of NO-producing neurons (control 55±13%; CAC 56± 11%; P=0.82). CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Chronic alcohol consumption induces a marked increase in NO synthesis by jejunal myenteric neurons, accompanied by an up-regulation of iNOS-expressing neurons and a downregulation of nNOS neurons. We conclude that the overproduction of NO may be a direct cause of gastrointestinal motility disturbances.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to measure the concentration of creatine in Langendorff perfused rat hearts, both by quantitative (1)H-MRS and by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). First, the relaxation times and other parameters affecting absolute quantification by MRS were determined. At 11.75 T, the relaxation times of myocardial creatine were T(1) = 1.1+/-0.29 sec (mean +/- SD, n = 5) and T(2) = 56.4+/-6.2 ms (n = 9). In phantom experiments the MRS measurements gave accurate values for the known relative concentrations of the detected substances. In glucose-perfused rat hearts, the creatine concentration measured by HPLC was 14.2+/-1.9 mmol/kg wet weight (n = 8), in good agreement with literature values. The (1)H-MRS measurements, however, resulted in creatine concentrations of only approximately 60% of this value. The application of CHESS-pulses for water suppression led to a further 30% reduction of the creatine MRS signal. These results indicate a reduced (1)H-NMR visibility of creatine in the myocardium, which suggests a compartmentation of myocardial creatine into various pools.

Abstract
Fungi, in particular Aspergilli, are well known for their potential to overproduce a variety of organic acids. These microorganisms have an intrinsic ability to accumulate these substances and it is generally believed that this provides the fungi with an ecological advantage, since they grow rather well at pH 3 to 5, while some species even tolerate pH values as low as 1.5. Organic acid production can be stimulated and in a number of cases conditions have been found that result in almost quantitative conversion of carbon substrate into acid. This is exploited in large-scale production of a number of organic acids like citric-, gluconic- and itaconic acid. Both in production volume as well as in knowledge available, citrate is by far the major organic acid. Citric acid (2-hydroxy-propane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid) is a true bulk product with an estimated global production of over 900 thousand tons in the year 2000. Till the beginning of the 20th century, it was exclusively extracted from lemons. Since the global market was dominated by an Italian cartel, other means of production were sought. Chemical synthesis was possible, but not suitable due to expensive raw materials and a complicated process with low yield. The discovery of citrate accumulation by Aspergillus niger led to a rapid development of a fermentation process, which only a decade later accounted for a large part of the global production. The application of citric acid is based on three of its properties: (1) acidity and buffer capacity, (2) taste and flavour, and (3) chelation of metal ions. Because of its three acid groups with pKa values of 3.1, 4.7 and 6.4, citrate is able to produce a very low pH in solution, but is also useful as a buffer over a broad range of pH values (2 to 7). Citric acid has a pleasant acid taste which leaves little aftertaste. It sometimes enhances flavour, but is also able to mask sweetness, such as the aspartame taste in diet beverages. Chelation of metal ions is a very important property that has led to applications such as antioxidant and preservative. Moreover, it is a "natural" substance and fully biodegradable.

Abstract
Flax fibers were ground with a ball-mill and four fractions with different size ranges were collected by sieving. These were tested for water sorption, degree of polymerization (DP), copper number, hydroxyl number and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and inverse gas chromatography (IGC). Significant differences were found between the properties of the flax fiber and those of the ground versions, including fragmentation of fibers, increase of water sorption, copper number, hydroxyl number and surface O/C ratio, and decrease of DP, crystallite size and dispersive component of surface energy (γs(d)). Some parameters depended on the particle size: O/C ratio and hydroxyl number had local maxima at 315-630 μm, while γs(d) increased steadily with the decrease of particle size. These relationships were explained by fiber disintegration, destruction of waxy surface layer, exposure of cellulosic components, increase of surface area and crystalline imperfections.
